I think we as naturals have to get over our hair "feeling" dry. Im learning that what I think is "dry" is actually what MY hair feels like💡 I had unrealistic expectations of what my hair should feel like or behave.

@@faithbankole4851 DRY HAIR - No snapback when you tug on your curls. - Not pliable enough - (my scalp hurts when my hair is dry so this might be another factor ? ) - Breakage( could also be from not having your hair trimmed for a long time, in need of a protein treatment) MOISTURIZED HAIR - Pliable enough - Your natural hair color would look richer(in my case, mine looks way darker when I properly hydrate it) - It’ll be able to retain those features(^)for days NOTE: I’m NOT a professional, I’m just stating what I’ve noticed on my hair after I followed some advices from professional hair stylists.

Hydrated hair shrinks. Thank you. Some of our obsessions with length let's us think that stretched -- dehydrated but lubricated -- hair is better than hydrated that shrinks and is healthy. Constant manipulation of the strands and dehydration can damage your elasticity.
@HereDiianas
@HereDiianas 3 года назад
Hi, I would like to say that depending on your length and thickness yes hair shrinkage everyday or often can become a problem. I started my hair journey with wash and goes or just letting my hair be most days with no problem and loved it. But when your hair gets longer and longer to full APL BSL waist length and your hair still shrinks back up to your ears you'll realize that it can become problematic to detangle, for knots, for single strand knots or just to put your hair in a simple ponytail, or maintain your hair during the week without using too much products... Look at youtubers with 4c long hair. Look at their journey and you'll see the same thing. As their hair gets longer they change their hair styles, their routine, they have to adapt to the new length. You need to keep it stretch more often, in low manipulation style more often... if you choose to maintain your long hair. Some even cut their hair in order to be able to wear it out or in more versatile styles more often without the hassle. So we have to stop judging other people and look at their reasons for doing things. If some women are obsessed with long hair and want to show their length what is wrong with that. I also see plenty which love how their short hair emphasizes their beautiful face feautures. And others who enjoy styles that shows off their hair thickness or their curl/coils pattern. Relaxers is bad and now stretching hair with braids, twist, bun, ponytail is bad too... Because let's remember that our hair does not need much to get stretch or to shrink. After wash day if I just put my hair in a ponytail it will stretch, if I put my hair in 2 braids it will strech, in a bun it will strech, If it gets hit by water it will shrink. So what is its natural state. No other hair does that. It's part of what our hair can do.
@sart1348
@sart1348 3 года назад
@@HereDiianas those problems with tangling, single strand knots and restyling of the hair come with the assumption that people with tightly coiled hair are still maintaining practices that are unproductive. The suggestions becoming popular from these stylists for regular hair care effectively combat these issues. Washing your hair regularly (every 4-10 days) regardless of whether you're not your hair is stretched or in its natural shrunken state minimize the tangling on washday (less shed hair to remove/less time for it to tangle in) Not using products that cause buildup and dryness (raw oils, butters) and trimming ends will also minimize tangling/single strand knots. Using products that leave the hair malleable if you do you want to change your style mid week (foams, soft hold gels). Using techniques to achieve your naturally defined, clump curls all over your hair keeps hair from tangling/knots. Adjust/reassess the rest of the routine/care and those things you mentioned aren't as much of a problem, regardless of how you choose to wear your hair. Many ppl who have done it are saying this. I didn't say stretching hair is bad. And if course some stretching is require to achieve certain styles (like a low bun). But constantly keeping your hair in a stretched state (especially highly stretched) can cause damage to the cuticle/elasticity. Much, much more damage than leaving it free. It's not necessary as hair gets longer. My thing is a lot of black ppl in particular act like *shrinkage* is BAD (and makes their hair completely unmanageable)... and it is NOT.
@TheVideti

@@HereDiianas Yes! I shed a lot and the winters here are dry dry dry! I have to always consider if I am in a heavy shedding time of year as well as what season it is as to whether I wear a wash and go or stretched styles because my goal is less manipulation and less breakage. I use what our hair can do to work for it, not against it.

My high porosity hair cried. I did no oils and butters 5 years ago per my dermatologist instructions for seborrheic dermatitis. My scalp was better by 30% but my hair was worse by 50%. I returned to oils and butters and adjusted my shampoo by leaving a Zinc pyrithione shampoo on my scalp for 15 to 30 minutes before rinsing. Also I added Zinc pyrithione to my leave in.

I think the reason the natural hair community is shifting back to a more "natural" approach is the lack of scientific evidence and abundance of buzz words that vaguely sound important. A misconception I see is people really don't understand that oil/butter can still be left on your hair even after you shampoo. I found the Hydra Bar Salon youtube channel and they show client transformations with this method. It takes some of them well past 30 days to get the oil fully out. Like multiple weeks of shampooing to get it all off. I see too many people saying "Well if they just used shampoo in the first place 🙄" not understanding how hard it can be to completely remove raw oil/butter from hair.

Then, months later I am now actually noticing a behaviour change. Which is wild. I already shampood twice a week so it wasn't only from washing but from less raw oil and using lighter products in general.

Also not to mention how some shampoos have tons of oils in them! The shampoo I was using before had oil in the top ingredients. So what was supposed to be cleansing my hair was adding on a layer of oil - on top of the oils/butters I was using - so it definitely may take some time to see a difference, depending on how you were caring for your hair before. I'm glad I understand now and discontinued using a lot of these products. It is really a night and day difference in my hair now.

You did an amazing detailed job and clarified very important details that I see so many others leaving out that really makes this particular way of hair maintenance or styling on the surface seem not very practical or beneficial. However, you stated the process very well. I am on week 2 of the process, and my first time, my shower was 50 minutes, including the clarifying step and my actual body care. I will state that I was use to shampooing weekly and cowashing( with conditioner, not cleansing conditioner) mid week or every 2-4 days depending on if my hair needed rehydration and I was use to applying my leave-in and sometimes styling products in the shower. The process time will decrease as your hair gets more hydrated and when you get use to the new cleansing, conditioning, styling process, as naturally any method you do, as you get more familiar with it, you get faster. I plan to complete the 30 days But I have no desire to, after the 30 days to eliminate my Ayurvedic scalp oil, that I use solely on my scalp after I hydrate my scalp and I will continue to deep condition with my Ayurvedic hair masks once to twice a month. So this experience is helping me see what steps I can “add to or subtract to improve”my hair maintenance. Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the true breakdown queen! Doing a version of the method for 4 months now, I’ve definitely noticed many things. However,I will say the topic of deep conditioners, and rinse out conditioners needs to be really understood! I used a rinse out conditioner for a month, and my overall elasticity was not great. However, stylist like mo knows hair, and lots of others really suggest using treatments that have a balance of moisture and protein. Especially the more textured your hair is, or if you have colored treated hair. The constant styling, environmental factors, and more can be very damaging after a week. However, it is all about preference. I spend a lot of time in the sun, sweating consistently, and just using a balancing treatment has worked for me. An elasticity treatment is very different and that also needs to be understood as well.

I've done it AND my hair is better than ever! I've struggled with some thinning and it is now growing in much more full. My hair seems to retain moisture for much longer than before. I have not been able to get the look of the so-called "wash and go" that these ladies promote (which is actually an entire PROCESS & PROCEDURE but, I digress), but using a mousse as my only styling product has made my twist outs come out more consistently awesome than ever before. The twist-outs do poof up in less than a week, but my strands feel softer, more moisturized and the style still looks "good," IMO (i.e. I wear it out, to work, etc.) for an entire week before I shampoo, condition and style again. Oh - the mousse-only method dries much faster for me, too.

Plenty of black women have used "non black hair products" where there is no oil no butter or in an insignificant amount. Same with black women around me. Thanks for producing this video Jenn! I agree that mastering your wash and go takes time. As a style, I think it's still pretty quick since you're just adding gels and raking them through. Shingling is so not necessary. And if you're applying the gels the way Aishia and Aeleise teach, you use a lot less of them, so the products last quite awhile. Also, regarding the question about tangling. If a wash and go is set properly, even if it frizzes or shrinks during the week, the hair stays organized and somewhat clumped. The hair isn’t free to love on itself (tangle). I find it to be a very low manipulation style. I'd love to see you continue this for another month and wear twists or twist outs. I think it would be useful for people who aren't interested in wearing wash and go's to hear you talk about how your hair feels. I also think your wash days should get shorter. 4 hours is quite a long time to shampoo, condition, detangle, and style. Even Aishia - with all the hair - can detangle in about 10 minutes. You can do it Jenn!
@sunnc

I LOVE the changing of scenes that is happening as you talk! I dont know why, but it just make the video even more enjoyable 🤗. Moisture overload is totally a think. Happened to me twice, had to do a mild protein treatment to correct it. How do you know? Your hair will feel mushy, less elastic, frizzy, and if you have a curl pattern, you wont....lol.

Keep it up! To your point about time, it WILL get faster, trust me. Styling, for me, went from 2.5 hours when I started the detox in December, to 20 minutes now, 7 months later. You will learn what your hair needs, and your hair will just “do that” after a while, so the time you take to style will go down dramatically.

Your hair looks great, and you are doing an excellent job explaining to beginners! Keep up the great work. Be encouraged your skill with a WnG will improve and you will be doing them in an hr or maybe less. I didn't come from a family that used extra (raw} oil and butter and nothing I saw on YT or the hair forums that I used to be in convinced me that I needed them. So although this seems like a trend to many on YT it's what I'm used to. The great thing for me has been the increase in the availability of botanical gels. My first gel was one called LA Looks, and it was in no way botanical. It's still made but I would never use it now. My first botanical was kinky-curly in 2012 and I still use it, but now I have plenty more choices which I'm so happy for.

This was a very informative video. I love how you are open to trying new things, even when it goes against everything you thought you knew. I definitely thing the detox is a great why you start and get to know how your hair acts without too much other stuff. I think after the detox you’d be well informed on what products you actually need and what you can add as a plus. Thanks for this. I can’t wait to start my detox when I finish the things I have and I’m able to get the right products. Everything I have has oils and butters in the first few ingredients.😂😂.

I appreciate the explanation because I was a bit confused and if I'm to purchase these products my pocket is going to kill me so for now I'm sticking to what I've been doing because it's working. And to be honest I don't do a lot to my hair I steam with aloe vera gel, few drops of tea tree, rosemary and peppermint oil because of my scalp issues (and it's working 😊), shampoo, deep condition and leave in conditioner. Twist it up then I'm done.

Jenn, because you did not typically style your hair in a wash and go, it is difficult for me to assess if your hair looks different with the detox thus far but I will take your word for it. I am enjoying the series. Would you try using a foam as a styler for your wash and go especially for persons who are not fans of gels. I typically use a cream only sealed with olive oil for my wash and gos and my hair lasts 2 weeks without refreshing. I am open to using a mousse.

I really do love the way this information was presented (you know how some natural hair videos can be kinda "this is what you're doing wrong because you're wrong and I'm on camera so im not"?) but there is SO much out there just assuming that because something is popular, that means it's going to work. I genuinely appreciate the emphasis placed on doing what works for you and you don't have to feel like you should toss yourself in the trash and start over if you don't do what she's talking about 😂

When I first began my natural journey 6 years ago, I used coconut oil and virgin olive oil mixed together. It naturally curled my hair without using gel products or custards. Since then I have tried so many name brand products. Right now I just wash with shampoo, conditioning the hair then I just use uncle funkys I don’t have a lot of breakage at all. I love it!

I think the water does not penetrate because the follicles aren’t open. You can use it to make more manageable to detangle but it’s not hydrating the hair is what I think. When you wet your hair thoroughly the products comes off and the water can penetrate. Eco styler gel was recommended by Jennifer rose nyc she recommends the clear one for wash and go.

I’ve been doing this for months and it works. I use wetline, I started with Cantu curl activator, now I’m on African pride twisting butter, recently got some design essentials products on sale and have been using those with the wetline. Idk, wetline just works for me, I don’t use too much and I don’t get buildup. It’s literally just copolymer, which is a molecule that holds a ton of water, so it makes a great humectant. I also apply more gel outside the shower, to help define it My only problem is that my environment is so dry right now that my hair, skin, even my eyes are suffering lol. I do my hair twice a week, it’s just easier and doesn’t take too long, 1-2 hours

@kathleenadeshoga8415
@kathleenadeshoga8415 3 года назад
@@RedFlyingFox007 it’s not about the hair being dirty necessarily. But the hair being dehydrated from chronic product buildup over time. Rehydrating the hair after chronic dehydration takes multiple wash days. Many ppl have noticed better curl definition, hair is better at accepting and retaining moisture and their styles last longer throughout the week. The actual behavior of the hair changes.

@@kathleenadeshoga8415 I get people get build up, What I don't get is why someone would need separate washes to detox and get rid of build up, as opposed to one really deep clean where you shampoo and rinse multiple times.

I agree let’s stop the madness. 😂🤣 Your hair, your experience . If you can’t trust your judgment by all means seek advice from a professional. If you learned your hair, you know it to a T and it works for you continue on your journey. If you want to experiment and try something different or a bit of both do it. If it makes sense to you and you see results go for it. If your hair breaks off, you’ll be mad for a whole but it will grow back.🙃

I have done the 30 day detox no oil method and it was cool when my hair was short, but I honestly saw no difference in my hair health vs. when I use oil and butters. But i do use high quality hair products so hair health has never been an issue. But when my hair got long, there is no way i can do wash and go’s because my hair never dries and takes a lot of heat under a hooded dryer for it to dry. And i mean like 3 hours. And if a spot is damp and i put on a bonnet, my hair gets damp all over. So I just do twist and use what I want which is usually a cream and mousse or butter and mousse. And I use lighter oils. My hair is mid back now.

I think a point that I am seeing said around is that we are truly over piling out hair and I think that is true. When I use too much of my cream it makes my hair weird and flaky so when I adjusted my portions, it made a huge difference. I think that over using product is something that should be a reminder in the NHC. A little bit can truly go a long way.
