If the smash community didn't complain about Melee Marth/"Too many FE characters", I, including many others, would have probably never played FE or know it existed.

I will say watching your channel was one of the things that made me do ironman runs. while there are a few different FEtubers that contribute. your FE11H5 ironman was so fun it was a big inspiration for me to do one myself. love the content man keep it up
Smash Bros was a good Segway. I was looking for GBA games to emulate, I see that some of the best selling GBA games were Fire Emblem and I was like, "oh yea, the sword people from Smash Bros. Sure, I'll try it." Now I watch a faceless Fire Emblem RU-vidr make war crime jokes.

Tearring saga probably has my favorite implementation of skills in the series. Which skills are learned and at what level varies between characters, making most of the cast feel distinct. For example, there are two axe fighters, one learning skills that makes him a player phase nuke, while the other learns vantage and gets a brave axe for a strong enemy phase.
10:00 I think this poll is not really that contradictory/unexpected. The Tellius games have a great story line and the all the nations feel fleshed out and interesting. There is a lot of effort put into the little details. But the gameplay for them is very slow, not like turn wise but the chapters themselves are a major time investment. I can clear the end game chapters of GBA fire emblem games in a couple minutes but doing PoR chapters can take 40 minutes just from how long the animations/enemy phases take.
I looked up support convos for characters i never use like Wendy and Astolfo. And let me just say, the script writers really didn't expect players to reach A support with those 2
If you want to look into romhacks I would probably recommend the fire emblem 8 hack bandit emblem by random wizard on fire emblem universe. It's a fun concept (playing the bandits), short and sweet (like 8 chapters I think), and plenty of generics the game actively tells you to massacre as strategy.
Man...its been 9 months since those polls? I still remember scrolling through the comments of each poll, often saddened to see the evidence piling up for "no one loves DSFE", but that's fair. I was still interested for the most part by the poll results. I suppose I was one of those people in the minority a lot (not a major gba fan, new mystery addict, etc), but I have gotten a lot more involved in the community recently, so maybe there's a connection there? It was nice to interact with a few comments about their opinions, and people rarely lashed out on each other, at least from my experience, so I feel less worried about the community being toxic, at least around here. One thing's for sure. We all probably gained bloodlust for FE units from Excel.
I think it’s funny that RU-vid polls require you to pick an option to see the results, even if the poll doesn’t apply to you and you’d prefer not to answer. Sometimes I click a random choice because I’m still interested in seeing the responses, but then I think about how a bunch of other people probably clicked something random too so the results might not mean anything.
A note about the promoting early bullet point, I think it really depends on the game because promoting at level 20 is optimal in Radiant Dawn and awakening/fates have skills you get from promoting/class changing later. But if you promote at level 20 in Thracia where are all the stat caps are 20 you're wasting a lot of time and making things generally harder on yourself. Soren waits until level 20 because stat caps actually matter for him, Ricken climbs to level 15 for a skill before jumping to another class tree, and Asbel promotes immediately because he's already got 14 speed.
Nah asbel promotes at 20 so he can have 65 hp for the endgame. Real talk though decided get him to 20/20 as a joke and he ended up solo'ing chapters 19-24 with like 70 hp from every life ring I could get and capped defence from scrolls. I love all the stupid stuff thracia allows.
And then you have SoV where you could potentially reach endgame without having any of your unpromoted units reaching level 20, pretty much forcing you to early promote.
I discovered FE with Smash and i always felt like the FE hate was cringe, i just din't wanted another Lord who used Just swords (and that's why at first i hated Byleth i was wanting Edelgard, but the other weapons made him hype for me) But ok, i played FE7 and din't finishied some years later the Byleth hate came and i heard to Hitori Omou playing in Azura spirit Battle then i got listen the song and returned to have interest in FE So here we are now I became a FE fan because of Smash Community's hate and Azura's song

I got into playing Fire Emblem directly from playing Battle for Wesnoth. I wanted a game that had more individual unit customization than BfW but less than, say, Tactics Ogre. Fire Emblem doing most of its mechanics with double-digit arithmetic (as opposed to, say, Rondo of Swords or even Advance Wars) was also a huge selling point. For most games, it's just way too hard, even with battle forecasts, to predict the outcome set of an engagement. Shit's difficult to do even with Advance Wars, which use sane numbers and consistent formulas. But Fire Emblem lets me know just how likely I am to end up at one or two hit points if I put them in range of three enemies. Strats we take for granted like being able to have your Jagen weaken a group of three enemies for your growth units for feed on are a nightmare to pull off in other games. I mean it when I say that Fire Emblem, even the more questionable ones like FE4 and FE13, has some of the best gameplay you can get in the genre. And it's ultimately what kept me around when Ogre Battle 64 and Der Langrisser are just RIGHT THERE.
Wanna hear something hilarious and depressing? You know Dark Deity? That game that got lambasted for bland map design, poor balancing, and a bunch of meaningless decisions? Yeah, without Fire Emblem to compare it to that game would've ironically been received much better by sRPG diehards, because it's still better than most sRPGs. And I'm talking about heavy-hitters like Langrisser.
Smash Mele introduced me to FE back before any of the games had be localized. That's probably true for lots of us in our late 20s and older. I got FE7 based only on seeing Marth and Roy in Smash and seeing similarities to Advance Wars.

I got into fire emblem by streetpass, passed someone playing awakening in 2013 when and I played the awakening demo, but fire emblem fates was my first full fire emblem game outside of a demo
Vestaria Saga, just the first release, has one of the best stories in a video game I've ever played. The gameplay is also really good, too. But that spritework, man. Oh GOD that spritework.
This was a serious blast from the past. Remember voting on most of these. Remember beong pretty torn between story and character at the time and just going character because it kind of covered a bit of both
I’m commenting some things as I watch the video, and when you got to supports, an old memory resurfaced of me reading through translated scripts of FE 6 and some supports from gamefaqs. I didn’t have any interest, nor means of emulating at the time and didn’t know much Japanese so I was interested in some parts of FE6 after playing 7. Years later I was able to get a Japanese Wii U and also bought Binding Blade when it came to the VC service. Also in my own personal opinion on the story in the games, while they may vary, I still generally enjoy learning about some of the game’s story and lore as well as the characters.
I never had a GameCube growing up, but my cousins did and they lived nearby me so we often played games together. Marth was one of my favorite characters to use in it and my cousin told me about the game which released out here, FE7 so I picked it up. (I was also one of those who initially thought Marth and Roy were in the game, but at least I was half right on one :P) But ever since then I’ve been a fan of the series and I’ve managed to beat FE3, 4, and 5 this year to beat all games in the series now!
Well the fire emblem games with stories I enjoyed the most had big focus on characters, Fire Emblem 7, Awakening and Three Houses are my favourite plots because I like how focused on characters it was. I haven't played 9-10 but from what I've seen I would enjoy them for that reason as well. I didn't really find myself invested in Valentias God problems or fates bullshit. I prefer Fire Emblem plots that are vehicles for character writing, which is why, even though objectively FE7's plot is completely off the rails and absurd within greater context, it is still my favourite plot because I like Hector, Eliwood, Lyn, Nino and Ninian's wild ride.
It's actually kind of interesting how I got into fire emblem. Like most people, I was made aware of the series because of smash bros, but my first FE game was actually the english release of FE1 on the switch. I really liked it, so I got three houses and played the hell out of it. Since then I've played all the games and beat about 2/3 of them.
I wonder if some these polls will give different results now your viewbase likely has grown voer time. Pretty interesting video actually. It's interesting how much discussion and video content tends the harder difficulties, but a lot people tend to play normal or reasonably difficult modes themselves.
When you mention changing the way you play, it's since I stumbled arround the fire emblem ytb community some video essays convinced me to change my ways and actually play as I did first, so mess arround and not care too much. Like for exemple I was Adamant about promoting units at lv 20 but slowly my views changed once faced with logical math perspective, which I never really considered
on resetting for character deaths-i feel it really depends on the character dying. like, losing ross means you've wasted the exp you fed him to catch up with everyone, losing odin means you lose a fun ass character, losing your dancer will mean losing the dancer in the game, and, naturally, losing your anime wife is just terrible. but if it's just some rando cavalier? a prepromote that just showed up you might not even use? sure, they might be pretty good, but it's harder to really be invested in either of them, especially if they get stuck with a boring personality (or have all of their interesting/endearing traits locked behind supports). add onto this however much time you've already spent on the map, and some units just stop being worth the reset and sometimes it's just more fun to roll with small losses like this. gives your playthrough an extra bit of character.
I guess I got into fire emblem from smash as well. It introduced me to the series. Then I came across Heroes which allowed me to get to know the cast of the many games.
My first and only fire emblem game is Echoes Shadows of Valentia and I was introduced to it by another youtuber and immediately realized that: Yeah, this is the best FE for me.
I just wish more people played fe5 (also tear ring and berwick because both are surprisingly really good, please play them). It's my favorite and I think if people understood how it worked and played they would like it too. Also best lord in the series free. And my stance on resets had stayed the same, if I like the character I'll probably save them, otherwise unless I miss gaidens I care about too bad. Vesteria saga is cool too.

I'm curious to see if the Three Houses data still holds up. While I wouldn't be surprised if it remained the most popular of the newer FE titles, I'd imagine that the curve would flatten quite a bit as the game has gotten a more critical viewing after the last few months, and a slight increase in vindication from the DS and 3DS games.
hector hard mode counts as a route split, most people replay FE7 just to get farina and karla and whichever of harken/karel/wallace/geitz they didn't get last time.

Thracia is so good though legit. Yeah it has some weird mechanics and most of them are the infancy versions of todays mechanics, but no game does gameplay-story integration better than Thracia. I could write an essay about this
Even if the results arent necessarily interesting I find the sample size to be useful. I also noticed different questions had different number of votes eh. If anything I'm surprised by the (relatively) large number of players that started on three houses. I do wonder if there's a correlation since 3H only came out in 2019, so there wouldnt have been much time to play other older fire emblem games, if they were even interested at all. For myself I've played every fire emblem game from 6 onwards, so that's like 11 games 👀 The poll results arent so bad, but i would have expected more. But I guess it's kinda hard and it does take time.
Also people voted 0 games? Thats uh. For me personally because I've already played them, I'm not super in the mood to play them again really. In the recent fire emblem games hard is basically sorta like the entry level, I've not actually played or seen anyone play "normal" on a fire emblem game since the days of fe9/10/11/12, which was basically 10 years ago.
I'm surprised people voted characters over gameplay. Although I guess we are kinda attached to them. That's very interesting. So 80% of the 19k votes started in the last 10 years. Although well I guess it sorta makes sense. Still quite lopsided compared to 2001-2010
The question about elitists is kinda interesting, since fire emblem is essentially only a pve game so any community based interaction is like optional.
FE2 and FE3 are fun, and I hope more people will give them a chance. SoV and Shadow Dragon are more accessible, but the originals are still worth playing.
I only played Awakening but I never come around playing the other titles out of how inconvenient to find these titles here. Awakening usually my go-to game until I can get a hand of Three Houses.
Fire Emblem generally has a serviceable story that serves as a vehicle for the characters. When the story focuses on characters (ie, Three House's story, support coversations, etc) it's at its best, plus the gameplay narrative integration you mentioned. But also Fire Emblem's story quality took a noticeable dip with Awakening and Fates, which, being the main entry point of the series, sticks with the playerbase.
6/7/8 is around the time the series started getting western releases which is probably why it's so high. In particular, 7/8/Awakening/3H are probably the main starting points for people looking to get into FE.
the resetting thing is interesting because I feel like most people would have a lot more fun in these games if they would let units die. at least up until the most recent titles the games were designed around losing units. also your old poll didnt have what I usually do which is "reset only when I feel like it" which I know is vague but basically I weigh how much time spent in the chapter versus how much I would miss the unit. most of the time I dont reset but if its for one of my favorites I generally will unless Im on the last turn of the chapter. I basically never reset on the last turn. I dont think everyone should do iron mans because I dont think everyone would like them but people really should stop resetting for every death every time. many people think its more fun to keep everyone alive but really they have never tried letting units die.

Yeah, on my first playthrough of Awakening (Hard, Classic) I kept losing too many units on the Tree level because of all the enemy reinforcements., so I ended up resetting a lot. Just when I'm about to clear the level and defeat the mustache general guy, Libra gets hit by two attacks he should have dodged resulting in his death. He ended up being the only unit I lost on my first playthrough. No way was I playing through that nightmare again.
Guilty as charged, I got into fire emblem because I loved playing as Marth in smash. Funnily enough I was curious about him in his games so for some reason I searched RU-vid and came across the OVA. I thought Gordin was fucking hilarious which made me wanna get into fire emblem even more. It rlly does sound like a joke that I got into fire emblem game cuz of smash and that dumb OVA lmao
Robin is like white bread. He's inoffensive. Robin matches the target demographic for Fire Emblem. People who consider themselves nerdy and tactically minded. A tactician is a great fill in for the player in that regard, because that's what you are as the player. Corrin has a ton of issues depending on who you ask, but he has mary sue syndrome despite his obvious flaws since everyone bends oved backwards for him. Byleth is also a mary sue, he's treated like he's perfect and does no wrong when he just... Doesn't do anything, and isn't really a character you can identify with. Kris is kinda like robin, but he's stale bread. It's inoffensive, but you also don't really want to eat it if you don't have to.
the elitist thing is always amusing to me because i was a former elitist so i know they existed, its just that most elitists from the past aren't those anymore either from just growing older or leaving the community all together, dispite this you will have a handful of people from the past that remember those days and still insist that the community is like 50% elitist which causes people that have never met a single one, to think so as well which further causes this idea of the FE elitist that really only exists in the heads of someone that was told like 15 years ago that "Nino isn't a good unit". as a former elitist i can't really recall anyone in the community that is one outside of MAYBE Endgame on gamefaqs, but you really shouldn't be going to gamefaqs for discussion in the first place, as of recently you might have afew newer fans mistake a guy who waifu's lyn that wants someone that's only done one or two games to play FE7 as an elitist, i'm pretty much at the state of "I just want people to experience as much fire emblem as they can, however they play it is up to them"
The Smash Bros. introduction really shouldn't be surprising at all. From Smash 64, you got a roster of familiar characters... and Ness? Who's this kid? Then people started playing Earthbound and loved it. Melee: Who's Marth and Roy? What do you mean I can't play their games? Then FE7 came out, and people got their chance. Then you've got people hanging out with their friends playing Smash Bros., and with the wide character roster, it's inevitible that people start talking about which smash related games they enjoy. Somebody in the group starts talking about how much they enjoy Fire Emblem, then their friends go try it out. I myself have played and finished a game from nearly every character featured.
The most interesting thing about this is I've never played any Fire Emblem game ever. I love and play Advance Wars. Why tf am I here? Is it because of Mangs?

I love Thracia, best story out of all of the Fire Emblems and the very game is fun IF AND ONLY IF you understand its game mechanics at a deep level. For example: I'm amazed at how many FETubers forget how Rescue Drop is not an obvious mechanic, even if you've beaten other Fire Emblems before, yet you absolutely need to do it if you don't want to get your shit wrecked by Gomez. I really think the community would benefit from getting someone familiar with strategy games but not Fire Emblem to play one of the 'difficult but not brutally difficult if you're a veteran' FEs like Thracia or FE11 H5. I think we're in denial about Thracia some.
I think that's because Fates was the newest game so people were obviously talking about it a lot and major FEtubers absolutely hated the game, an example being Mekkah. Then once Three Houses came out most of the primary FE influencers loved it and some even warmed up to Fates more, bringing the more hardcore fans out of their tunnel vision of hatred for the ''newer games''
I started with fe7 and liked it, then i played fe8 and loved it, then i played fe9 and fucking adored it, then i played fe10 and i hated it, then i played it again and now it my favorite game.

I feel like the gameplay is good and rhe story isn't like, extremely better than the games before it and after it. I just think the worldbuilding is like, not there in fates. I wonder if it's just weaker cause they were kinda developing all 3 at once
Although I think SoV's plot isn't amazing and the gameplay and map design is kinda weak, the of the writing and voice acting for the characters is great
I really disagree with the idea that there is a best level to promote. There are simply too many factors to consider and different situations to factor in.
I love FE9&10's gameplay personally (excluding maniac mode), and FE10 in particular is one of my favorites in the series for highest difficulties settings (though the no displayed ranges is a little annoying), and the story is actually serviceable barring the blood pact thing which ruins part 3
I don't think promoting early makes the characters 'basically unusable long term'. Most of your promoted characters won't hit the level cap again anyway, even if you promote around level 15-17. This means that there is generally no downside to promoting early. It only gives you faster access to promotion boosts (which in some games even includes better growth rates, which would make it a *constant* improvement). If there is no boost in growth rates, *and* you expect to get said unit to level cap again after promoting, well before the end of the game, *then* it might be a bad idea to promote the unit early. This generally only applies to your 2 or 3 most used units, which are probably your favorites that you've been feeding exp to, so promoting a character at level 20 is only viable as an act of favoritism.
I don't love avatar characters but i don't get the *vehement* hatred they get. Yeah, Corrin is not a good character but i wouldn't say they're the main problem with Fates' storytelling by a long stretch. And i *really* don't get why Kris is so hated. People say that Kris "takes away from Marth's character arc" but, uh, did you play fe3? I did. What fucking character growth did he get in fe3. Please tell me
I've never heard anyone say that he takes away Marth's character arc. The complaint I hear is that he straight up steals Jeigan's lines. Particularly the one where he yells at General Lang.
