Hey everyone, Jacob Knowles here with a glimpse into the less glamorous side of lobster fishing. This week, we did something that might seem crazy at first-we ran our lobster boat aground! But there's a method to our madness. Without access to a fancy dry dock, we resort to the old-fashioned way to perform essential maintenance and repairs on our vessel.
In this video, we're taking you through the entire process of beaching the boat at low tide, a time-tested technique that allows us to work on the underside of the boat safely and effectively. It’s a critical task that we need to undertake a few times a year to ensure our boat stays in top shape and to troubleshoot some recent issues.
Join us as we dive into the reasons behind our boat's reduced speed, going only 2 knots, and the mysterious wobble that's been making our days at sea even more challenging. We're in a race against the tide, working meticulously to identify and fix problems before the water returns and risks tipping the boat over.
It's a tense, tough, and muddy job, but it’s absolutely essential for the safety and efficiency of our operations. You’ll see the ingenuity and resilience it takes to maintain a lobster boat without the modern conveniences of a shipyard.
So, if you’re interested in the behind-the-scenes realities of lobster fishing and want to learn how these maritime crafts are maintained through sheer grit and resourcefulness, this episode is for you.

Really interesting. Not ever being a boat owner, I would have never guessed that kind of maintenance was required! Terrific video.
@gir489returns2
Your dad buying an entire hardware store's stock is such a dad thing to do.
@andynieto5432
I love the "don't get under there son " a dad will always be a dad 😂
@Momcat_maggiefelinefan
That was great! Never seen this done to such a large boat before. As an ER/trauma nurse, I kept waiting for the boat to squish you! We just naturally think that way … don’t want you ending up as paste under the sea! Happy lobstering! 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
@nerfherder4284
The look on your Dad's face when you said he probably looted his Dad's hardware was absolutely priceless 😂👍🏻
@TheSeptemberRose
Growing up, our next door neighbours were members of the local Yacht Club here in Toronto Ontario Canada, and I would hear them talking about boat related stuff, so this maintenance stuff didn't surprise me at all! Also, my Mom helps out her friend all the time who has a sail boat and it has to be hauled out of the water every winter. We're talking freshwater boats though, because we live around the Great Lakes. I thought it was so cool that you actually use the tide to give you access to the hull and the rudder etc. Much respect to you and the work you do!

Tourist asks the coastal Maineah, "why do you keep parking your boat in the mud?"
@JarrodZerr
This looked safer than any Luke McFadden video

Papa Knowles! Nice to meet you!! I love the look into your family generations and overall feel of this video.

A doctor I worked with once told me, "The happiest day in my life was when I purchased my boat. The second happiest day of my life was when I sold it." I've never owned one, looks like fun mixed with headaches.
@cathysweet1905
So glad your Dad was able to come and help out. He sounds like an awesome guy. 😊

The hard ware buyout is a dream! Smaart dad!
@HeppyValentine
I have never in my life been interested in the details of boat care. And here we are. It takes a unique combination of charisma and passion to get people excited about things they wouldn’t normally have interest in. Well done, Jacob
@olbenji
Having the bolts in the shop makes life much easier.

The interactions with dad are always awesome to watch 😅
@MazzaRC
I love these videos about the "behind the scenes" stuff!
@michelemcdermott75
Ohmygosh ! Why did I never think about maintenance? I just enjoy your videos! Wow!! I love seeing your dad!! So now we know Santa restocks those bolts!😄 So glad you made a video of this for us!!!
@austinthomas9145
I like how you say this is the not “glamorous” part of the job. Honestly none of it does and that’s why I freaking love it.
