not so fun facts: after alexander released the reynold's pamphlet, philip became really sick, like brink of death sick, so she was dealing with that too. then, when philip died, she was also pregnant with a son who she'd go on to name philip 2. AND angelica (her daughter who she named after her sister, and who is the little sister mentioned in 9 year old philip's poem) went insane from her grief. she was really close with philip. AND peggy had died earlier that year. so eliza had to deal with that too. AND THEN, alexander and her father passed away in the same year. ELIZA WAS FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE BRO

In the biography LMM based this musical on, the author wrote that Eliza was known to say often that she couldn't wait to see her Alexander again. She tried to have his biography written three times in her life, but none of the authors who tried it managed to get through his thousands and thousands of pages of writing, and so never finished. Although he was a bit of a shit husband and cheated, he was known to be a devoted father and always found time to speak to his children in the evenings and play with them. After he died none of them ever said a bad word about him, even in private correspondence. And he actually had that in common with Burr. Burr gave his daughter Theodosia an education far beyond what women could usually hope for at the time, and they were very close. The song "Blow us all away" draws on the parallels between their lives. Theodosia died after her ship was lost at sea during a storm, when she was travelling to see her father. She literally "blew away". Phillip was "blown away" by a gun shot.

one thing you gotta remember about the whole duel 'aiming for the sky' thing is that duels in their entirety were about honour. you duel someone because they questioned or threatened something about you or someone you care about's honour. theres a whole build up where you can resolve things amicably, and decide to talk shit out instead, but if it comes to guns its to defend your honour and reputation. if someone aims to the sky, they are saying 'no, actually, i do wanna talk this out, dont wanna shoot anymore'. they are essentially disarming themselves, literally throwing away their shot. to shoot someone when they do this anyway is to shoot someone who is unarmed and wants to talk it out. and in a duel, when youre defending your honour, to shoot an unarmed man is like the pinnacle of dishonour. the entire point is defeated. your reputation would be wrecked. so shooting at the sky is like the last chance - albeit a bit risky - to turn back on the fight at the last minute and talk things out, and was a legitimate strategy. so no, hamilton telling his son (and ultimately doing so himself) to aim for the sky wasnt being dumb, it was a legitimate strategy to end a duel. just a shame for him it didnt exactly work out either time
@HeatherAckroyd
@HeatherAckroyd 2 месяца назад
In Philip's case it was even worse, because if you listen to the count it only goes to 7 before the shot rings out - so the guy shot Philip before the end of the count, when Philip's back was still turned (and his gun already aimed at the sky).

I LOVE how fast you clocked that Hamilton was using Elizas own lyrics against her at times. It's subtle but like DAMN. The first time I saw this it was a bootleg video of the show on youtube, Philippa's (Eliza) scream when Philip died in that one was heart shattering. It was WAAAY too raw, both she and Lin were crying real tears and "It's quiet uptown" was hard for them to get through. Like you could tell they were in deep and it wasn't just acting. Last funfact; the real Eliza wore a tiny piece of Hamilton's writing in a necklace into her old age. That little fact breaks my heart.

“Where’s Peggy?” Peggy died fairly young in real life, that’s why she’s not in the second act. And it’s not certain if Hamilton had an affair with Angelica. I’ve heard strong evidence on both sides from biographers and historians, and obviously we’ll never really know now. He was also very friendly Peggy, and they corresponded a lot, but that was purely platonic. But we do know his affair with Maria Reynolds happened because he wrote the Reynolds Pamphlet. And Eliza Hamilton really did burn all of her letters from Hamilton. But it was just before she died (at 97), and it’s not really clear why she did it at that point. One of the reasons I like this musical is because, while it is obviously entertainment and takes some liberties with reality, it still maintains a pretty solid historical foundation.
@theresaschuebel5151

She isn't in the second act because she is playing Mrs Renyolds. Peggy died shortly before Philip's duel that is why she is wearing black.
@allieren
@allieren 24 дня назад
@@theresaschuebel5151 I know Jasmine Cephas Jones plays Maria Reynolds. But that isn’t why Lin-Manuel Miranda chose not to write Peggy into the second act. The actors playing dual roles are characters who either died by the events of the second act or, in the case of Lafayette, left the country.

Also the gasp at the end can be interpreted a lot of different ways. Is it Eliza seeing the story has been told? Is it her reuniting with her loved ones in the afterlife? No one knows. Lin purposely left it vague and has said that the reason is different and private for each and every Eliza.

I've heard that theory a few times, and I'd love to know where it comes from. It's not in Burr's memoirs, it's not in Van Ness's statement, and the few people who Burr ever talked to about the duel were left in no doubt that he genuinely intended to kill Hamilton (Jeremy Bentham, who'd become a close friend, called him a common murderer after that conversation). Burr was also actually a good shot who practiced regularly. I mean, honestly the whole 'Burr didn't mean to kill him' sounds a lot like wishful thinking from people who like Burr (he is SO relatable) and struggle to synthesise the different aspects of his character.

(And I’d like to say I’m preference I am a writer) It is insane how panicked Hamilton sounds in the Reynolds Pamphlet. Like it is no secret Alexander is an amazing writer, and so many of his letters like the letters he sent to Lauren’s are amazingly written and interesting. The reynolds Pamphlet is honestly the worst thing he’s written, not even in a moral standpoint. He’s struggling so hard to keep a point across, it’s the ramblings of a man scared for his life. I do love this musical but there are quite a few changes from history, (not just removing a lot of characters worst qualities, like pretending they fought against slavery) notably: Burr, Jefferson, and Madison were not the people who Hamilton told about the affair, they found out through the Reynolds Pamphlet, it was three different people. One of them, Charles Monroe, was challenged to a duel by Hamilton, but Burr (who was Monroe's second) managed to talk Hamilton down before either of them were shot. Philip died after the Election of 1800 not before. The tipping point wasn't Hamilton voting against Burr at the election, that was only part of it, it was actually a few years later when Hamilton staunchly discredited Burr's running for governor despite them going for the same ideals. (He also supported a smear campaign by the party's rivals). Maria Reynolds was being abused by her husband and he was threatening to kill their daughter, Susan, if she didn't find someone to have an affair with and then blackmail. She was considered very respectable and married a doctor after her husband was arrested. Burr and Maria Reynolds knew each other, although he was unaware of the affair, he was her lawyer when she divorced her husband, something considered shocking as women were not allowed to divorce their husbands. He managed to secure the divorce and a good deal for her, however. Hamilton actually supported 'positions for life' and was at first considered a sort of royalist (his views did change over time). Angelica was already married when she met Hamilton, she also had several brothers. Adams didn't fire Hamilton, although they didn't get along, Hamilton had already been discreetly let go from government when Washington was still President. At the duel, Hamilton fired his gun, it missed Burr. It is unclear if he was intending to hit him or not, because he didn't miss him by much. Also, Burr had told some people before (and insisted so afterwards) he intended on just shooting him in the leg, but misjudged. Also: If you want to check out other proshots like this I recommend the proshot of Into The Woods! Bernadette Peters is a queen and it's free to watch legally on RU-vid.
@ceiswyn
@ceiswyn Месяц назад
Have you got a reference for the idea that Burr told people he intended to shoot Hamilton in the leg? Because I've read through a whole bunch of stuff about Hamilton and Burr and never come across it. Burr really didn't talk much about the duel afterwards (he hated apologies and explanations, it's a whole thing), and the people he did talk to were pretty unanimous in reporting that he'd said he intended to kill. (For example the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham, who'd become a friend, said he was "little better than a murderer") (Also, Hamilton's shot was four feet wide of Burr and hit a branch twelve feet up, so it wasn't close. The question is whether it missed by so much because he intended to miss all along, or whether it missed so badly because he shot after being hit and it went wild)

18:47 it wasn’t in the show, but Theodosia’s husband was killed in battle, and then she and Aaron Burr got married. Baby Theodosia was their only surviving child. I think she was about 10 when her mother passed away, hence the line in the duel scene “this man will not make an orphan of my daughter”

With recorded performances like this, part of me wishes they just had a few cameras placed around the theater so the picture always got the whole stage in a really still shot. The theater nerd in me just loves watching everything that is happening on the stage, so with the closeups they add effect, but it cuts off choreography and little details sometimes. 30:00 no one talks about that moment, but it’s one of my favorite visuals of the entire show. The way it slows down suddenly and at first it seems like no one is moving and then you see they’re just moving super slowly. And it’s so controlled, plus also it looks like a hurricane but instead of like weather it’s a hurricane of everything Hamilton has done

The one thing he sort of fudged was the relationship between Alexander and Angelica. She was already married when they met and there is no evidence that there was anything ever between them. What is more interesting is that Jefferson and Angelia corresponded also and he apparently wanted her. When he was overseas he proposed that they travel back to the US on a ship together and go visit Niagra Falls. And then there is this letter he wrote to her; Jefferson begs Angelica to return to Paris and in August 1788 he seductively proposes that she accompany him on a vacation to America. “Think of it, my friend, and let us begin a negotiation on the subject. You shall find in me all the spirit of accommodation with which Yoric began his with the fair Piedmontese.” The characters Jefferson mentioned are in a sexually charged scene in “Sentimental Journey,” a best-selling novel of the day by English writer Laurence Sterne. Yoric is forced to share a room at a crowded Italian country inn with the lovely stranger Piedmontese, and the two eventually have sex. At the time, she was still married but Jefferson was a widower.

To answer the question about term limits at 27:55, the length of a presidential term has been 4 years since the beginning. That was determined in the constitution, which was approved in 1789, the year George Washington officially became the first president. The *number* of terms you could serve as president was technically unlimited until the 22nd amendment to the constitution in 1951. But George Washington set a precedent of only serving two terms before voluntarily stepping down, and I think most if not all presidents followed suit even before the limit passed.

Fun fact the reason ppl claim Hamilton actually wore his glasses is bc he wanted to see burr clearly to see if burr would throw away his shot or decide to shoot him

Hamilton aimed his pistol and then asked for a moment to put on spectacles , he then fired the first shot - causing Burr to think Hamilton was trying to shoot him. Hamilton's intent was to throw away the shot - which ultimately went into a tree.

The term was 4 years, but it was basically you could run as much as you wanted. George Washington however stepped down after two and to honor that, every president after him only served two terms out of respect. There was only 1 president that served 3 terms and shortly after that, it became law a president could not serve longer than 2 terms.

His father left, he didn't die for some time (and Hamilton wrote to him even after he left, for example the text about Hurricane was actually a letter for his father)

Other Lin-Manuel Miranda musicals are In The Heights, Bring It On (adapted from the movie), and 21 Chump Street (it’s only 15 mins and it’s on RU-vid, he wrote it for NPR). He also directed the movie version of Tick Tick Boom, which is a show written by and about the guy who wrote the musical Rent (which was a huge inspiration to Lin as the first contemporary musical he saw in the 90s). I think you would enjoy any of those!

I love this musical and I have a bunch of favourite songs, but on top of "quiet uptown" there is one moment that always kills me and it's Burr's "wait" right after he shoots. He's been waiting the whole story, and the one moment he should have waited, he doesn't and shoots and kills Hamilton who had shot at the sky, and he yells "wait" because he realises what he's done. Gets me every single time.

Besides my secondhand embarrassment and shame for ‘say no to this’ and ‘blow us all away’ when Phillip dies, I can listen to the entire soundtrack no skips. Lin is a legend for sure! You should watch ‘In the Heights’

If you want more musical suggestions, I would highly recommend any musical from Starkid. They don't have huge budgets, but their voice performances are incredible and their musicals are very funny. I would recommend "The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals" but everything from them is awesome. I'm not sure how the copyright works because all of their musicals are free on RU-vid but even if you have to cut it down I'd love to see you react to their stuff!

Kudos to whoever did the editing on this video (don't know if it was Scoot or someone else). Don't know if anyone has mentioned it or if it has been done, but you can watch videos of the cast performing some of the songs at the White House, and there is also a video of Lin Manuel introducing the whole idea of the musical at a poetry jam that took place yeeeeaaars ago at the White House. It's really interesting to hear how the song changed since he introduced the idea and how he got inspired to write about Hamilton.
