I agree Gabby…. I find it super hard to read books that have so much violence against women. It happens so much in the real world the last thing I want to read about is the same thing. Also, I feel like it’s too normalized in books which almost normalizes it in the real world too and I’m personally done supporting that especially as a woman. Great video as always! I put run time on hold at my library! ☺️
It’s so bad!!! Not like anything she’s written at all!! There is no mystery, you know pretty early in what’s happening but you get told HOW it happened in flashbacks which I personally don’t like. It’s basically a character study if one lady’s life. So so boring and it’s honestly made me question buying Hillier anymore as I also wasn’t a huge fan of Little Secrets.
Keep the good work.. You are such postive energy.. And i love the fact that you stand your own ground and say your real opinion about any books no mtter how famous the writer or the book.. Love from libya 🇱🇾🇱🇾
Don't really comment on videos but the book the bodyguard reminds me sooo much of this k-drama strong girl bong-soon and u should really check it out it has the same vibe as this book.
I’d love to see a video on your favorite mangas! I wasn’t interested until you started reading them, but there is so much out there, it’s overwhelming. Would love to know what’s a good place to start!
I gave The Last Housewife an enthusiastic 5 stars, and yes, it was difficult to read. I'm the type of person who has no trigger warning requirements. The more upsetting and even devastating a book is, the more I want to read it. That doesn't mean certain books dont make me uncomfortable though. This one definitely qualifies. I read my first and only 2 star read this month, and it was a horror book called A Black and Endless Sky. Its an adult horror, and imo, it was juvenile and pointless. Oh, also, for what it's worth, now that I know why you didn't like Pieces of Her, I will say that Andrea is way more mature in Girl, Forgotten. I liked her a lot more in that one. You might want to try it.
Obviously we all want to read five star books, but it's kind of comforting when somebody agrees - like you do - about a really bad one. Things e Do in the Dark was awful. Thanks for corroborating that!! x
You and Katie have convinced me to try Monster, where did you buy it from? My library does have them and I don’t see them at my local bookstores! Amazon says they’re very expensive….. is there another website that I can use instead? Thanks!!
I have been having the same problem with thrillers. So many 1 and 2 stars. Reading dark fantasy lately and really loving it. Ordinary Monsters has been so so sooo good and has had me in the edge of my seat at times with the action sequences. Terrifying spider-like zombie guy chasing people… yes please!!!
Finding a good thriller these days is a really hard task! Sadly it's the almost only genre that I'm reading but I'm also dipping my toe into dark and epic fantasy!
Oh no, Pallbearers Club is one of my Most Anticipated so it's coming up soon, that's disappointing to here. August was a crazy month for me, I read 45 books (17 manga, 8 novellas, and 20 novels). So many new favorites...Slewfoot, Carrie, The Bad Seed, The Change, Love in the Time of Serial Killers, Any Man, I'm having a hard time picking a top book of the month.
I’m currently finishing Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. Highly recommend it! I think you would enjoy it. It’s being adapted into a mini series on Apple TV with Brie Larson as the lead role
welll i can tell you what book im NOT going to read in sept after that scathing review lolol! Im reading The Attic Child and plan to read Daisy Darker, Mordew, and Girl, Forgotten!!!! I have some great ones lined up for next month too!!
My worst book of August was Cult Classic by Sloane Crosley (2 stars) and my best book of August was Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel (5 stars!)
Here's what I read in August Always young and restless by melody Thomas Scott her memoir How to fake it in Hollywood by ava wilder The wedding crasher by mia sosa Winter in the world by ken follett The alloy of law by Brandon Sanderson Desperation by Stephen king The ABC murders by Agatha Christie The law of innocence by Michael Connelly Witch please by ann Aguirre The donut trap Court by tracy wolff The deal by elle Kennedy Dream on by angie hockman Much ado about latte by Kathleen fuller
Hi I have been watching you for some time, and I love your reading choices. I want to give you a story about your sponsor. The very first book I was allowed to choose myself was from Book Of The Month. It was Carrie by Stephen King, I treasured it, and had it up until a few years ago when it was stolen. I will never forget how much it meant to me to be able to pick a book every other month alternating with my mom. That was in the early 70's but one of my fondest memories. Keep making videos, and good luck.
No surprise that Things We Do In the Dark and The Pallbearers Club were my least favorite reads of August 🤣 My favorites were Stolen Tongues and The Housemaid!
Love In the Time of Serial Killers: Haven't read it but when you gush over Sam like I remember why I wanted once to be a writer, i.e., to create a perfect character, as it seemed this author did here.
Two of my TBR's this month were your one star reads. LOL. Pieces of Her and Things We Do In The Dark. We don't always agree (but we do a lot) so I still have a little hope I like them. Finished Daisy Darker and Carrie Soto is Back and loved them both already. Very excited about Fairy Tale by Stephen King. Also reading The Island, The Final Gambit, Black Mouth and Dead Silence.
Thank you for the time stamps Gabby which allowed me to skip to the actual books. Whilst I appreciate you are trying to convince us to read manga, I think I will personally always be anti-manga because I just can't get into reading comics since I left my teens years ago. I love all your other recommendations though. 💕
The Monster Manga really intrigued me but I'm scared it might be too much for me to handle especially since I'm not that big on horror or anything scary.
Agreed! Hillier and Slaughter are two of my GO TO thriller authors and I was SO fucking confused when reading Things and Pieces. Like, WTF HAPPENED?! I was so bored and so downright MAD. I actually turn people away from those books. Like, no please, don’t read these, they’re NOT representitive of my favorite authors!! Pretty Girls and Jar of Hearts are so so brutal and thrilling and scary- total opposite of those recent books. Ugh!!
I am reading The Exorcist's House by Nick Robert's right now. It's a good horror novel good so far. My September and October TBR is just filled with lots of horror and creepiness.
I have read total 15 books on August with an average 3.4 ⭐ ratings. The best book was The Last Queen and the worst book read by me was The Reckless Girls.
Kayan Kollyn : the spiral of the ellmott & messenger of the secret 😊😊 The great fantasy adventure saga book series 😊😊😊❤❤ Waiting for your review on this book❤❤
Shame to hear that The Pallbearer's Club was a disappointment. I really loved the concept of annotations too. I'm gonna give that one a miss so thank you for saving me some time, haha!
I love Karin Slaughter but Pieces of Her was a huge miss, me and a friend tried to buddy read it after we buddy read two of her other books and both dnf’d it lol
I would love to see you do a review on a novella called “Come Forth in Thaw” by Jayson Robert Ducharme. I just finished it, so many emotions in such a short intense read.
Lol Gabby rant on things we do in a dark is hilarious because that was how I exactly how I felt. It was predictable and a hot mess. I was looking at the 5 star ratings and I was like did we read the same book? This was defy least favorite Jennifer hillier book. Lol every time u say shit or fuck I just can't stop laughing
The Last Housewife ugh I had the SAME tough time reviewing it. It is a story that should be told but in a memoir or just fiction. I don’t need this in a Thriller genre. It isn’t thrilling… at all.
Thank you for being honest on # of books. As an avid reader hearing others book read numbers in a month feels shaming. Manga, audio and novellas of course help up numbers. I have recently unsuited from the 40÷ book tubers because of its obnoxiousness and not reality.
So proud of your stats!!! I gave Mary 4 stars. You didn't say it but, it is a crazy koo koo bananas read! -i liked Pall bears club. I had a 90's flashback, hardcore -i think I gave Things in the dark a 3 meh stars -I'm reading Last housewife and ~trying~to keep an open mind, but, man, its a lot -Book Lovers was my fave read. I KNOW!? WHAT THE FROG?? ME AND MY BLACK HEART? lol GABBY! Are you super psyched for Fairy tale by Stephen King?? Or no 🤔
Gabby Gabby Gabby! I wanted to send you a manga rec as a gift through Amazon but I've never done it before and couldn't figure it out. Is it because things need to be on your wishlist to get gifted? Also, you should so try watching the Spy x Family anime. It's a perfect adaptation!
Aw thanks so much Karina!! Yeah I believe the book has to be on my wishlist for you to send it. That’s so nice of you, which manga is it? Maybe I can add it to my list 😌💕
@@gabbyreads sorry for replying from a different account. I was at work and don’t like to use my personal there. But hiiii. It’s called Sweat and Soap 🥰. Premise sounds a little strange, took myself a while to give it a shot, but I really think you’d enjoy it!
@@kary1591 no worries!! Oh I think I have heard of that, it sounds so interesting! I just added it to my wishlist now, thank you for putting it on my radar 😌💕
Pieces of Her was a huge disappointment, especially because I was expecting the Karin Slaughter I got in The Good Daughter, Pretty Girls and The False Witness. To me, Pieces of Her fell more in line with her cop series which I could never get into. I will say that Girl Forgotten falls somewhere in the middle. I like it a lot better than Pieces of Her but that's honestly because the flashback versions were much better. I couldn't really get into the parts with Andy and I think it just goes back to me not likely cop/detective POVs...
I just finished "The It Girl" by Ruth Ware and I swear you were reviewing that book when you were talking about "The Last Housewife" minus the sex cult.
I love how critical you are about this months reads. It’s helping me unhaul things from my wishlist. We don’t have time to waste on mediocre or bad reads
i’ve been commenting about things we do in the dark on your videos since i saw you talking about it because i just knew you wouldn’t like it. i did not like it at all
People write about serial killers and aren't serial killers, they write about monsters and aliens without seeing a monster or going into space. If a man can write a horror story about a menopausal women, then let him and don't give him shit about it. Women write about men without an outcry from men. Just stop all this "women can only write about women and men can only write about men". It's tiresome. I read books for the story not the sex or serial life of the author.
