I wish romance authors would stop with the whole "she's so petite and small and he's so tall and towers over her" thing. I don't mind it being mentioned a few times, but we get it already!!

thank you for saying the twin trope is overdone!! every time there are twins in a thriller, i know they're going to switch places or be revealed as the "other twin" at the end lmao so sick of it

Unpopular opinion I really enjoyed House Across the Lake by Riley Sager. I think I'm easy to please or didn't read enough of that trope. I bust out laughing when the audiobook narrator sounded like a chain smoker. I read it with my eyes not my ears. I also liked Jackal. I gave it 3.5 stars. It was a 5 star but that plot twist threw me off and I knocked a couple stars off. I gave The Book of Cold Cases 5 stars. I may be easy to please. I tend to like the books you love and hate. I did DNF Love on the Brian. I was hard on romance novels this year.

I think I enjoyed You've Reached Sam a bit more than you during our buddy read BUT the book was so unmemorable!😅 like I literally forgot we read it together... compared to other books we read like Battle Royale, Ice Planet Barbarians, The Four Winds... heck, even NINE LIVES, Sam is just so meh 😂

Omg Gaby! I felt the same way about Tomorrow Tomorrow. I thought that I was the only one. To me some of the characters were unlikeable. The end was just rushed. I felt for Mazer though flawed I was rooting for him. I didn’t enjoy it as I thought I would.

Tomorrow x3 was definitely my biggest disappointment of the year. It felt really overindulgent and emotionally manipulative with the misery these characters experienced. Feels quite overhyped.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow was my absolute favorite of this year. I loved reading about the development of video games and the relationship the characters had with the games they developed. Love on the Brain and The Butcher and the Wren were awful. I bought Butcher and the Wren because I love the Morbid podcast...but what did I read? There were times when I felt like the book had lost sight of its own plot line!

I need to realize if a book has a ton of hype it’s probably not for me. Tomorrow x3 I DNFd. It was literally putting me to sleep. Another overhyped book was Lessons in Chemistry. I finished it but there was nothing about it that made it amazing, it was boring and just fine.

My most disappointing was Stay Awake by Megan Goldin. It was one of my most anticipated books, I thought it could be five stars, and I bought it at release (something I rarely do anymore, I’m using my library more often lately). And then it was SUCH a huge dumpster fire. So so so so SO bad. My only one-star of the year, which makes it even more infuriating!

My most disappointing book was The Cartographers. I thought it would be good. I was really excited. And then it was /so bad/ that when I figured out the big twist, long before it gets revealed, I went "that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard" and skipped to the end. And then the ending just. Is so stupid. It has so many plot holes. It makes no sense. The worldbuilding is so stupid. God I regret picking up that book so much.

After loving Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstances I was very I’m disappointed in The Wilderwomen. I also I feel the same about Book of Cold Cases. I didn’t pick up the Christina Lauren book after the horrible lazy writing in A Holidaze. Also, while l loved TT&T, I understand where you are coming from. There wasn’t much plot and no historical ties to the time period (the 90s) which is disappointing for me since I was born in 73.

I LOVED Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow... I thought it was BRILLIANT... I did listen to the audiobook which I thought was so well narrated... I bought the hardback and plan to read with my eyeballs and see if it is just as good... I don't play video games at all, so I was hesitant about reading... But the story is so much more than video games... Lessons in Chemistry is my favorite of the year, but this is very close behind 🙌🏽 But I'm right there with ya on House Across the Lake 🤷🏻‍♂

House Across the Lake is my guilty pleasure of the year 😝 But I was disappointed by Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes, and Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier-both have premise that sounds great, but the execution is unexciting and a little lazy.
@Madi88886
@Madi88886 Год назад
I enjoyed The Book of Cold Cases, but the fact that the plot twist was revealed so early was frustrating. I kept waiting for there to be another plot twist that never happened lol. I didn’t really enjoy reading from the perspective of the supposed killer. I would have much rather had more chapters focused on the present day, reading from Shea’s perspective. I found her life more interesting.

Something Wilder - the premise hits all my sweet spots - romance, adventure, treasure hunt, clues. I was sooo looking forward to it. What a let down - one dimensional characters, awkward pacing, odd clues in weird places. By the end, I didn't care if they found the treasure or not. 🤬 Ultimate frustration.

I loved House Across the Lake but I can see why it would be polarizing lol. For me the ending really made it. I also really enjoyed Book of Cold Cases. My most disappointing reads were probably Flicker in the Dark and Just Like Mother, not that they were bad I just don't get all the hype. They were pretty mid. And Sundial just because Last House on Needless Street was my favourite book of 2021, and Sundial was a 3 star.

I didn’t read any of these on the list but still planning on reading Jackal to see what the deal is lol. Okay thought on the Stranger Things like books…a lot of the show is based on 80s horror and Stephen King. Have you read IT? Yes!! I was so disappointed in Jackal (so much potential to examine society's proclivity to ignore missing minorities). Book of Cold Cases was another disappointment for the same reasons you mentioned, especially after Sun Down Motel! Tomorrow x3 I think takes a reader that looks for the themes in books. This read as a video game with a main story and then side quests, while exploring the decisions we make. It's a great book club pick because there is so much to unpack. But it did go off the rails for me, started as a 5-star and moved to a 3. The Bone Orchard was another huge disappointment-so boring with flat characters.

I was so disappointed with ‘love on the brain’. It seems like Ali recycles the same characters and story. Even her short stories were so similar to ‘The love hypothesis’ , she needs different characters and more development. Her female leads are so shallow and are all so tiny 🙄 I know she want to repeats the success of her first book but I won’t read her books until she comes out with something different.
