I love The Metamorphosis by Kafka! It was such a strange book but very moving. I was in tears towards the end of the book.

Kafka is genius. The Trial is one of my favourite classics, I highly recommend. There's a great old b&w movie adaptation by Orson Wells as well. I always enjoy watching your videos! They helped me get me back into reading in English, so thank you. 😊 Also, thank you for making me re-read one of my favourite classics, The Catcher in the Rye. Because I'm French - as my name indicates^^ -, I'll read the Brothers Karamazov in French though, since it wasn't originally written in English. I'll do the same for Camus of course, it makes more sense for me. Looking forward to the next GoT liveshow and good luck with your writing !

Kafka might be my favourite author next to dostoevsky. I love the way he balances humour with despair, especially in Metamorphosis. Kafkas also so interesting to research about his relationship with his father

I adored Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. It thought me so much about how important communication is, what an important human element it is. It’s a critical piece about falling out of the working or “being useful” system and highlighted the struggles of losing autonomy and more and more abilities of self expression.

" Kafka, the story goes, encountered a little girl in the park where he went walking daily. She was crying. She had lost her doll and was desolate. Kafka offered to help her look for the doll and arranged to meet her the next day at the same spot. Unable to find the doll he composed a letter from the doll and read it to her when they met. 'Please do not mourn me, I have gone on a trip to see the world. I will write you of my adventures.' This was the beginning of many letters. When he and the little girl met he read her from these carefully composed letters the imagined adventures of the beloved doll. The little girl was comforted. When the meetings came to an end Kafka presented her with a doll. She obviously looked different from the original doll. An attached letter explained 'My travels have changed me.' Many years later, the now grown girl found a letter stuffed into an unnoticed crevice in the cherished replacement doll. In summary it said: *Every thing that you love, you will eventually lose, but in the end, love will return in a different form."

What a great update! Thank you, Carolyn, for continuing to share with us :) I loved "The Metamorphosis" in high school -- your description of it as both "fantastic" and "devastating in so many ways" matches my memory of it. I have a copy of Kafka's "Amerika," but have never read it. Maybe I'll add it to my TBR list!

Animal Farm was such a good way of putting across that message, it creates such a clear picture in your head, and everything is done so visually that it is blindingly oblivious. As humans, noticing the subtle changes in the behaviour of animals is much easier than noticing the subtle changes in the behaviour of humans. It sort of takes us out of that human susceptibility to being easily deceived by words over actions, and shines a light perfectly on it at the same time.

I found the film The Rebel In The Rye which is the biopic of J.D. Salinger to be much better than the book itself. Nicholas Holt did such an amazing job as Salinger. The fact he played Salinger and J.R.R. Tolkien in two different films I believe in one year is quite incredible.

Really loved your video, and completely felt akin to your researching writers after reading books, i'm the same in books and composers that i read and listen to, i love delving deeper and reading about their lives. I'm currently reading She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan which i'm really enjoying, it reminds me of one of my favourite books The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, although She Who Become the Sun hasn't reached that level for me yet but i'm enjoying it so far.

I so agree with you. When in HS I read Catcher in the Rye which seem to me like eating a dirty sandwich,, but loved it when I read it again in my fifties. Like re-reading The Scarlet Letter, now that I had more insights into all the Characters as I have seen the same faults in myself. May I recommend the complete stories of Mary Poppins.

I just finished the non-fiction book, "Picasso's War," by Hugh Eakin which I think you should read before you visit the Guggenheim show Picasso in Paris (which you must visit). it was a fabulous read that I enjoyed greatly. Then I read Edith Wharton's "Age of Innocence" which I just loved and yes, it made me cry. I love a book with almost no action and deep contemplative internal struggles. Today I began the newly crowned Pulitzer co-winner, "Trust," by Hernan Diaz. Seemed like a good sequel to "Age of Innocence." I need to read "The Bros K." Cheers.

I agree on Catcher in the Rye. When I was in high school, I didn't think much of it at all, and then I revisited it when I was about 25 and it had such a profound impact on me. I remember someone referenced Catcher as "a war novel disguised as a coming-of-age story". I took that to mean that much like Holden, Salinger himself was a WWII veteran who felt alienated by society and could not find his place in it. Great video!

I read this a couple of years ago and really hoped it would be more that it was. I thought Holden C was a self-absorbed, spoiled, indulged, privileged brat. He had the opportunities that few people in the U.S. or the rest of the world for that matter could only hope to receive. His love for his siblings are the only qualities that could make his character redeemable. HC's eventual fate still doesn't add much sympathy in my book. His repetitive use of "lousy", "GD", "hell", etc. aren't colorful but irritating. CINTR is "lousy." lol. I am not saying you are wrong to enjoy it the 2nd time around. It is just a matter of opinion. And I do really value yours. Luv yr lousy channel. (I had, to. You know I did. Hahaha.)
