I didn't read the books and only found season 1 entertaining. I love Penelope for the powerful woman she is struggling in a vapid society of bullies inside and outside of her house. But I tried to read some things about the book for this season... If she begs him to kiss her and says "please" and "thank you" I'll cancel my Netflix at that exact moment!

There’s a line in the book where Penelope says Colin’s probably never been punished, and that feels like an understatement. He never experiences a moment of hardship during the book (jealousy over his wife’s hard earned accomplishments isn’t a legitimate obstacle for a book’s hero). Penelope has 12 years of unrequited love, then his side of the relationship is: “hm, surprising - I’d probably kiss her again sometime.” He always gets what he wants, when he wants it, with no real effort - someone might want to tell Julia that is not how you write a character you want people to find interesting, likable, or relatable. The show is just so much better than its source material. They have improved Colin’s character a lot (though he still has some growing up to do), Pen is still a badass, and they have a much more legit friends to lovers vibe than in the book.

As much as The Incredible 2 was mid i will say that the relationship between Helen and Bob was the best part. He was undeniably jealous that Helen was doing all the superhero-ing, and he had to be the stay at home dad, but he never made that a problem in the marriage or for the kids. He sees Helen as a person with her own dreams and as an equal, so he over the course of the movie LEARNS how to be a better dad and husband to support Helenand not have her worry. Sure, it wasn't easy, but good god, he put in effort, Colin can't relate.
@Lillith.
@Lillith. 4 месяца назад
Of course he doesn't make it a problem, he loves his wife. Yes, he would rather be where she is, but he does his part to make the family unit a success like a good husband and father. No, it's not easy, that's the point, but he gets to save the day because he's a loving husband and father. Colin can learn a lot from Mr Incredible. But someone needs to tell him "no" before that growth can happen and Colin has never heard that word.

@@Walkingcalamity404 I think the writer has some strengths - the writing style is very easy to read, the meet-cutes are always super cute and/or intriguing, the familial and friend relationships are always fun. The phrase “you can do anything, you’re a man” is exactly what Eloise said to Benedict in the scene of the second season when she’s smoking a cigarette and he shares one with her. I think bits and pieces of the different books are mixed into different places and from different characters to make the translation to screen easier for different characters. I usually like book series better than tv series because they are usually more detailed. However, I think in this case, Shonda rhymes has made an exquisite choice for the series. The music, the lighting, the beautiful atmosphere and the great acting has made the series my favorite. She makes me want to be in her world. She has truly made it a work of art. Even my brother has gotten into the show. (And that’s saying a lot as I wouldn’t usually see guys liking period dramas.) she has amazing talent and taste.

And in the show they made him two dimensional. I guess it's an improvement from his book counterpart, but he was so cute in previous seasons. There were signs that he did really like her, but the ball hadn't dropped yet. I wish they had leaned more into that. But no, he's that annoying person that went on a tour of several countries and now thinks he's this enlightened. They could've easily done the thing where he's surrounded by interested girls and Pen walks by and he ditches the girls for the safety of Pen's company and that's how the ball finally drops. They also made him this guy who pays for sex and that's not book Colin or previous seasons Colin. That's his brothers; that's what Anthony and Benedict do. Anthony more, Benedict is more adventurous with his romances (quite the deviation from the book, but I'm here for it). Sweet, innocent Colin was perfect for the friends to lovers, but they changed him and now he's annoying self obsessed Colin. I dislike Colin in this season more than Anthony from season one.
@misspriss2482
@misspriss2482 2 месяца назад
Sweet innocent Colin not paying for sex? Girl, what were you reading? The book made it quite clear that he was sexually experienced and it was not with nice girls. In the book, he literally tells her that he would never act that way WITH A WOMAN OF HER BACKGROUND and not propose marriage. Colin sure as hell was not virginal and innocent in any way considering the fact that he knew his way around the female body and his thoughts about how she was obviously still a virgin. I don't want to be graphic, but his observations were of a man who had had a lot of sex before her.

Colin and Penelope has been my fave characters since S01. And when i found out that they have their own book and they end up together, of course i needed to read it. Ohhh... boyyy.... I think this is the first time in my readers/watchers life when i'm so happy that show made changes in book character and plot. Jesus, book Colin was such a red flag. His anger issues were handled so poorly and glossed over by author like it's all okay. Thank god show Colin is better. At least until now (who knows what will happen in last 4 eps). I don't see why show Colin needs to grovel(i've seen people demanding that show Collin grovel). He did not do anything. He did not know that Penelope has feelings for him. Why would he grovel about things he did not even knew? And then he said a bad comment that hurt Penelope's feelings but he apologized to her when she told him that she heard that and it was hurtful to her. He does not need to grovel about 1 comment. I mean - Anthony was basically marrying another woman and did not have the balls to call it off sooner. He used her knowing he liked her sister. That's something you grovel about. Not one bad comment. So i don't get the hate show Colin gets. Book Colin - that dislike i get. He was pretty problematic.

I hated Colin in the book. I mean in show, he is more ridiculous in the end and I don't think he is really begging at all because in trailer her doesn't really beg. He did seemed to be embarrassed of her. But, if there is a chance of redemption, I want him to be opposite of book Colin. Book Colin make it feels as if loving pen is such a big task to do, the way he literally questions himself and is so jealous of her. I want him to be in agony, not only because of Lord Debling but for everything. He should realise his stupid mistakes and make up for it. If he turns out to be like the book Colin, I will ship pen and debling. I hope that they don't make Pen's other suitors to be horrible people. I hope Lord Debling is amazing

Great video! I read all the books after season one of the show came out and remembered not liking Penelope and Colin's book - more specifically not liking him as a love interest for her; she absolutely deserves better I think the show generally treats Penelope better than the books so hopefully Colin will treat her with more respect and kindness. I have high hopes for this season. I prefered season one to book one, I missed some of the bonding moments between Anthony and Kate and the bond between the Sharmas in book 2 even though it was still a great show overall. If Edwina doesn't marry the prince, I'll riot because all that character assassination would have been for nothing. Anyway, I truly hope Polin's season is better than their book and have no reason to believe otherwise

I fully agree ! This was my least favorite book because of how mush physical abuse Julia Quinn inflicted on Penelope. I especially hated how he bruised her arm during the engagement ball and the time he yanked her out the carriage so hard she falls flat on her face on the sidewalk ?! Couldnt agree more, i actually read the book after they aired the first half of season 3 and saw people raving about the book so i couldnt wait and started reading it (its actually the first book of the series that i read) and goddamit i was frustrated,collin was a jerk the whole book, from the kissing scene where he acted like a child and got mad because she thanked him and he understood that she saw what he did as a favor (whcih is true,his first motive was because he felt bad) and ran away like a little coward making my girl spiral bad,the church scene too,like who gives you the right to be mad because she has a life,and i also didint like that the makeout in the carriage was after he treated her awfully,like no boy you dont deserve that,his tantrum whenever she tried to discuss LWD is also infuriating,but the cherry on top was when his solution to cressida’s threat is to out penelpe WITHOUT TELLING HER,like wtfff,he was gonna reveal her identity asLWD infront of the intire ton whiout discussing it with her,i literally screamed at my book All in all there was no growth in his character,he was still this asshole who makes everything about him(literaly most of the conversation he spins around to be about him!his writing ,his feeling ,etc) I read the book because i loved show penelope,i loved her story,her being overlooked wallflower in everybody’s eyes but in fact she is this beautiful smart woman who made a business in an era where that wasn’t expected of a novle woman,but my girl deserved better There is actually one thing that i liked in the books more than the show(but mind you ive only read this book)is eloise’s character,i cant stand her in the show,because she always makes things about her and never listen(the fact that she found out that pen is LWD just because she listend to her friend ONCE is my proof)but in the book she listens ,the conversations arent one sided (granted there wasnt many and there was no fovus on them but still she topped show eloise) I rsmbled a ton because non of the people around me watches or read the books so iah to let it out 😂

I read the books and yes Colin does have his moments where you wanna smack him on the head but overall I love how he’s written, Julia Quinn is writing men how they would be in that time period. They had all the power, they had all the say so, so yes Colin does have some qualities that in today’s society is a big red flag, but in that time period that’s how it was. Romancing Mr Bridgerton is my favorite book in the series. Penelope is such an amazing complex character and the fact that she’s able to do and accomplish everything she did in that time, is just amazing and I’m absolutely looking forward to how the show will portray Colin finding out that she is lady whistledown, I also hope that they put the conversation that happens between Eloise and Penelope when she and Colin are engaged. A big part of why Eloise finally decides to be more open towards marriage is because Penelope gets engaged first. This season is going to be amazing and I cannot wait to see Colin and Penelope’s story on the big screen.

Tbh I think for me I didn’t like the aspect that they removed from the show about how Colin was the most favourite brother for almost everyone, especially his and Eloise’s relationship. While I agree with some of it, they have removed almost all aspects of him being a good brother and his relationships with his siblings. Also for the ‘ women can’t do anything / Penelope going somewhere alone’ I think those things were valid because it was written during that era so I didn’t mind that, I 100% agree with Colin being in love even more after finding out she is Lady Whistledown, I didn’t like his reaction, like I understood where he was coming from but I hope he really admires her after he finds out, but Colin is my farrr my favourite brother lol. Like atleast he was better than Anthony when it came to his siblings, and the whole Edwina storyline I didn’t like because’ all for honor’ he was going to marry the sister while having feelings for the other one, creeped me out. And didn’t like Simon’s trauma dump on Daphne so as far as shows go Colin is still the best for me lol he hasn’t done anything too low to go back from as far as characters go

i’ve read this book after watching the 3rd season because I wanted some fun, easy read. but colin’s behavior really surprised me. i think the way he acted was downright abusive at times, how he talked to Penelope, tried to control her and to domineer over her. not to mention grabbing her by the arms. It was really scary behavior and couldn’t see it as a romance. the show is not great, but colin is less piece of a shit and Pen has more agency

Either she don't know how to write different men - or maybe, she is an evil genius. I mean, think about it. She created a series about a super wealthy and very highly esteemed family. And every single one of them are super annoying, obnoxious, entitled and flawed in some way. Some are even manipulative and abusive. They also have good sides, of course - but no character is entirely good or evil. The love interests seem to be the same way, though maybe not to the same extent - but you just don't get why they love the Book Bridgertons so much. 😅 Penelopes season was literally a tragedy for her to be so in love with the male version of a bimbo, who made everything about him. Sophie is basically blackmailed into marriage - same for Daphne and the Duke, and Kate/Anthony. It is a soap opera - you can be highly annoyed by it, and you have no idea why, but you just need more of it! 😂

Just started the video, but one of my most annoyed part of Pen's weight is the fact that her body WAS the ideal, so Quinn writing modern diet culture into an era that did not exist in this way is infuriating. Her mother going to great lengths to MAKE her look 'unattractive' by having her clothes improperly tailored isn't mentioned enough. Even in the promos for the new season we see her in the same outfits as others, but the tailoring is actually accurate to her bustline, which makes her more 'attractive.'
@catherineannechiang

oh i agree! i thought about this a lot even after filming this and ultimately i'm really disappointed in how the author chose to insert modern diet culture and fatphobia when it wasn't necessary. how lovely it would've been to have a heroine that challenged our modern beauty standards, which so many people assume have always been the same!

Bridgerton men in the book are VERY problematic and infuriating. I preferred audio listening to the books instead of actually reading because they pissed me off so much. I understand they were written like 30 years ago and modern sensibilities and values changed a lot but all the men managed to piss me off at one point in all the books I read from the Bridgerton universe. Believe it or not, Colin is NOT THE WORSE. But I kinda was entertained through it because I was listening while working on a long project so, I recommend this way "reading this series"

@@catherineannechiang The book is short and not very eventful, so listening to it was easy and quick. I did in much less than 8 hours of work. Colin outing Penelope as LWD at the end to the entire ton, without her knowledge, still infuriates me. Also, the fact that Pen never told her _best friend_ she was LWD, for like 11 years of publishing the gossip rag, really confused me. (And JQ conveniently not having Eloise not be there for the big reveal-their friendship became an afterthought.) Gah, I felt like the book started off well and had some cute silly moments, but when Colin went alpha male it lost me.

Hi, I think the season was awful. Not because of the kiss, they made it in a different way with her leaving him with no reaction. But it’s poorly written, too many plot lines, too many side stories, meaningless even the Queen is boring and serves no purpose at all, they have very little time together to develop a plausible change in their relationship, I shipped Francesca more than them. Colin looks like a stalker, that’s all he does, we don’t see good conversations between them, the balloon scene is ridiculous, his diary is absurd and the way he cuts his hand is not believable, that whole interaction is rushed and poorly executed. Suddenly Pen doesn’t have a brain she only has asthma. I liked Lord Debling but it wasn’t supposed to be needed so Colin thinks he might lose her or be jealous, he should’ve liked her for her with more screen time and her evolution as woman without treating him like he’s the last coke in the desert, he never has to fight for anything and didn’t have to fight for her either… I don’t know what’s the fuss with the carriage scene because there’s no build up to that so it felt fake, his “declaration” was awful “what if I did have feelings for you”? What am I, 12?? I hope part 2 is better but they already ruined part 1. I saw people asking for a spin-off and I’m all for it, do their season again with good writers! Penelope’s character deserves that much. And Eloise remains insufferable, also don’t care for Cressida’s storyline I don’t need to know her hardships so she can fake being LW 🙄 she is a bully and will always be and that’s why she is single not because of her parents. Anyway… the writing is awful, I don’t know what happened… I think people will be happy with them hooking up and taking their clothes off and that’s all but there are better series to watch for that reason.

when I worked at a book store i read if in one day while no costumers came. and i actually thought i would get something more sustainable but what i got was a 5 doller bodice ripper from the grocerie store. I think reason why they Picked the Bridgerton Franchise to build on was because it gave them a lot of room with what to doo, since the books are so thin in plot and have nearly no side story. also they are all verry formulaic, so i am glad the show is doing its own thing

Your commentary was delightful. I started to read and then skimmed the book a few weeks ago, and you observations about Colin-the-Man Baby (although you didn't use that term) are spot on. There has certainly been a shift in regency novels during the past decade-plus with the women being more clever and less likely in need of rescue and the men having more emotional depth than lust, anger, and jealousy. Thanks for this!

I had problems with every main man in every season (and some of the ladies), but the problems started from slight irritation in S1, to real irritation with Anthony's temper S2, and the irritation is rising steadily with the vapid, two-dimensional, annoying and strangely oversexed Colin in S3, who is apparently straight up dislikeable in the books. And S3 is not giving me nearly enough of the main couple. They still feel like side characters, for goodness sakes!!! 😕

I’m so glad I’m not the only one! I was disappointed with RMB. It dragged and was boring to me, not to mention, the lack of challenge and build up for Colin to win Pen over. It was too easy! He just woke up one day and realized, oooh I think I like her. Bleh, if you ask me. Insert eye roll here. However, I do appreciate the back story for them as friends though. And I feel the LW reveal to society was kind of anti climactic, sadly.

The show makes Penelope worse to make her a better match for Colin though, which I don't like. She is so much pettier on tv. Lady Danbury remarked once that Whistledown had to be a good person because she never picked on anyone who didn't deserve it. She let the poor Smythe-Smith girls suck at music in peace and such. I hated Book Colin so much, it was my first book of the series and also my second to last. He was a pathetic jealous man baby who was abusive to his wife abd then did whatever he wanted to do. As I read I desperately wanted her to find someone else, anyone else would have been a better choice. She literally looks at him and says I have no idea why I was in love with this man. Thats a relationship death knell. And the only reason she was being blackmailed was because he cared about his reputation, she did not care one bit. I just desperately wanted him to grovel and her to kick him but noooo, he saves the day with boring whatever. A man who bruises you and refuses to even talk to you should be dead at the end of a book not the savior.

I don't think it was done well in the book, but in the show, you get the greater understanding that they're both hiding who they really are, even to each other. However, Pen loved him first because she knew him better than he knew himself, could see through him. And only when Pen gains more confidence to be herself he suddenly starts to fall in love with her. Again, it's way better in the show than in the book so far. But I think that's what we're supposed to get out of their back and forth in the beginning.
