There is A LOT in the book I left out mostly due to time and also because it gets a little complicated lol. BUT this book was so fun to read and honestly might make me read the original books. Is it worth it? Let me know :)
EDIT : ALSO I accidentally kept spelling Lucy Gray’s name with an E instead of an A- sorry Lucy Gray you wouldn’t want this :( RIP (jk shes not dead shes alive in my heart)

Snow being hot in the movie was ON PURPOSE. Be honest, there’s no way he could have done what he did, and lived for as long as he did if he was ugly. Even in the books, he KNOWS he’s pretty. Him and his stupid blonde curls😒

I was worried about reading it because when it first came out people were saying it was a redemption arc and it's just a boring rehash of the original. But when I read it I was like DID WE READ THE SAME BOOK?! Like at no point did I feel like snow was a good person, he'd say something nice then twist it at the end or only be saying it for people to like him. HOW WAS HE A GOOD PERSON?! HE'S A SNAKE. Overall I'd say it was a really good book and I'm so excited for the movie.

Yes!!!! Exactly. I think some of the fans just wanted a different book then Collins wrote. They wanted a hunger games where they could cheer some other champion from the books. Collins never wanted anyone to cheer on a champion, including Katniss. She wanted you to be horrified by the systems in the books.

This!! One of the main criticisms I've seen of the book is that it "tried to make you sympathize with Snow" but it's not doing that at all and I do not understand how people can think that 😭 It shows that he had so many chances to make the right decision but every single time, he chose the wrong one. It's an origin story of how he became as horrible as he is today, not a redemption story, we were never meant to root for him.

I think Lucy was genuinely always into Snow. She seems like a very realistic 16 year old outcast to me. The minute a boy is nice to her she falls head over heals for him. She obviously has bad taste in men, her only two boyfriends having tried to kill her. She even goes on the forgive her first one, and defend Mayfair saying that she was probably just "lonely". Shes a kid with bad judgement in a bad situation with bad people.
@lilchaos9212

She seemed way more naive and forgiving to help her contrast Katniss' more pessimistic nature. Katniss seemed to look for the worst in people while Lucy wanted to believe in the best of people like Snow and Mayfair.

She also didn’t always know his motivations behind everything, like his desires to meet her early, help her, and win the games are all for his own reasons, wanting money. She just latched on to what she thought was someone being nice and fell in love because of that.

He was in love with the idea that she belonged to him. If he could've gotten away with cheating in the games and been able to fulfill his goal of having Lucy be a singer in that guy's nightclub while he got his education and the high life he wanted at best she'd have been his mistress while he married someone 'appropriate' to keep his family name clean.

But! (Im sorry I have to) You think he could marry her, looking for a way to become like a celebrity? You know, she kissed him in front of cameras before the games and people at capitol already call her "his girl" so, maybe he take advantage of that and keep her the right way. I know that wouldnt end well anyways Lucy Grey would get bored sooner or later.
@raspberryarizonateaa
@raspberryarizonateaa 7 месяцев назад
@@mariavictoriasorianolopez9932this is interesting to think about; I could see both playing out. On the one hand what OP said, him never marrying her to keep up with status, but I could also see him taking advantage of Lucy Gray’s new found celebrity like you said. I feel like the ladder wouldn’t end because Lucy Gray got bored, but rather because she truly just isn’t capitol. I think it’d end the same way as the book, she’d just runaway and try to disappear. I’m also thinking that scenario could end in Snow poisoning her for whatever reason.
@mariavictoriasorianolopez9932
@mariavictoriasorianolopez9932 7 месяцев назад
@@raspberryarizonateaa yes, that's what I think also. But, I was assuming that, since Coryo keeps her, she would influence him into becoming a "better person" or at least not another piece of the capitol. Let's remember Plutarch was also part of the capitol and from a very Welty family (of course we don't really know his reasons, but I think he mentions he doesn't agree with capitol Hunger games). Ok so taking this example, I think Coriolanus would have changed his mind and just live a decent life with Lucy Gray, and I don't know (I'm saying this because in the book, there is a big time when he really despite capitol and the hunger games, when he started to think like Sejanus, (and he doesn't want to think like him at the beginning, but later he just have to kind of agree with him), last but not least, he doesn't even care about appearance or what people may think and it was all because of Lucy Gray and the way capitol treat her. Soooo, having this in mind I think he would have being a total different person, he started to poison people from his anger against Casca, but Casca would have realized he changed (even at some point when Coryo was sick of Capitol Casca notice this and stares at him with other kind of look) and at some point, would became closer ?? I'm sorry yesterday I sleep very late I'm now is 8 a.m. maybe I'm just sleepy haha anyways
@mariavictoriasorianolopez9932
@mariavictoriasorianolopez9932 7 месяцев назад
@@raspberryarizonateaa also, I think that maybe, who knows he could have become one of the first rebels from capitol. We know the were several persons FROM CAPITOL ITSELF that didn't agree with the games. There is Tigris, Clemmence, Lysistrata (I think) and well Sejanus, they could have been a big influence to him. Also, I'm fantasizing about this imagining it all happen rigth after the games, when Casca doesn't send him to district 12, or without coryo killing Sejanus or Mayfair.

I would like to give this book to young girls and say, "these are the dudes you gotta watch out for." He's a walking red flag. And in the beginning--before he murders people and becomes a dictator--he's just kind of like a regular douchebag. I could see him becoming a finance bro. Girls will say, "I can fix him." And it's like oh baby, no. Run like Lucy Gray. Though I think it's okay to say the actor is attractive (though I hate his hair in the Capitol scenes). Or Cornelius Snow is hot. Because he's Coriolanus' good twin, right?

I really really hope no one who reads this book romanticizes a character like him. There's a lot of things that, especially in the fiest half-ish of the book, seem to be redeemable circumstances. AND the book is from the perspective of Coriolanus Snow himself, we get his entire thought process and see how he's actually able to twist the reality to justify his actions and actually believe he's in the right. It can really play into the "I can fix him" kinda "trope", because everything we see is a product of his childhood since becoming an orphan - his manipulations being a part of his survival. Except, girl, he made his own decisions later on and crossed the line of no return. There's no saving him from himself at this point. It's good to be empathetic and compassionate, but that can't come at cost of one's own sanity, health and life. People like Snow just ain't worth it.

Definitely read the trilogy! It's awesome to see how the games have changed because of Snow and what exactly triggers him when you've read his back story. One of the most fascinating changes to the games is how the victors are treated afterwards, particularly how they are kept in the public eye in various ways. He ensured no victor would ever just disappear like Lucy Grey did.

And even when he decided to run away with her it was more because of posible arrest and execution... He regreted this when he was told that he has passed the exam for Officer candidate school and the secod he realized he can destroy last evidence of the murder he just ditched her entirely... In the end he cared only for himself and his own benefit...

So glad you enjoyed Ballad! You should definitely read the trilogy whenever you get the chance (or in the meantime, watch the movies), all the knowledge from Ballad will hit harder once you know about the events later on in Katniss's time. Also, I completely agree with you about Lucy Gray's intentions. It seemed to me, even after reading the book 3 times, that LG was flirting with Coryo for fun and to have a better chance at him helping her get through the games. Then, along the way she started to genuinely like him, and her feelings were solitified when she saw in District 12.

Imma make this short. (I re-wrote this to be shorter lol) I think Coryo did love Lucy, but he got so caught up in protecting himself, he got blinded by that. I also think he got completely sucked into what it was like to have power and be in control; because after everyone telling him he was either his father or not, he kind of felt like it was in his genes. And for Lucy, I think she did love him, but she said earlier in the book/movie that she valued trust over love; and finding out he lied about Sejanus, and also didn't fully trust her, she couldn't live her rest of her life with him. So its really sad he let that evil side in him come out and ruin the rest of his life, and the lives of others. THANK YOU..,for your consideration 😉

The thing I liked about this book is that it demonstrates just how deep rooted Snow’s twisted ideal were. I personally believe his moral character was compromised the minute he was born into and raised in a family where he was the only child - and male at that - who had come from a wealthy and prestigious family. War or not, this position made him believe he was superior and born for greatness in the Capitol. However, after the war had taken so much from him he desired what “belonged” to him even more. Not just power but the control that he always thought about throughout the book. He had lost that control during the war and refused to ever lose it again. I guess that was his own PTSD. I think Snow did fall in love with Lucy Gray but his need for power overshadowed that very quickly (the story took place over the course of 2 or 3 months max?). He mentioned that he would marry only someone he could never love because he disliked that falling in love with Lucy Gray made him act stupid and lose control. So yes, I think he did love her but very briefly and not as deeply as he thought he did. Also, every time he called Lucy “His girl” you could tell how possessive he was. Definitely a walking red flag if I’ve ever seen one.

Okokok-SO TO ME- snow's character is just very selfish, he has HIS interest first and foremost. SO when snow decides to run away it was a selfish thing to do even if it was "to be with lucy" because we know it isnt- he runs away due to the fear that the guns he used to kill people would be found and it was just conveniant that he had an out with Lucy. BUT when he finds the guns in the abandoned shack he realizes that things could be fixed, he's just a few loose ends from everything he wants. I mean he has a chance to move up the ranks, AND we KNOW that what snow wants most is power, control. He states it in the first few chapters on how it may someday be his downfall. Tbh i think this book is really well done, and reading it first in the series feels a lot better because it makes this whole over-arching story a bit more of a dramatic piece on how a girl of 12 with nothing much to her name but skill and a song be wronged by asystem and then 64 years later a girl (thpugh definently not the same) but of similar nature can do what was needed done yo ruin said system. In the nation of Panem, established in the remains of North America after an apocalyptic event, the wealthy Capitol, which is west of the Rocky Mountains, exploits the twelve surrounding districts for their natural resources and labor.[5] As punishment for a past failed rebellion against the Capitol, which resulted in the obliteration of District 13, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each of the remaining districts are selected by an annual lottery to participate in the Hunger Games, a contest in which the "tributes" must fight to the death in an outdoor arena until only one remains. 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen from District 12, in the coal-rich region that was once Appalachia, volunteers for the 74th Hunger Games in place of her 12-year-old sister, Primrose. The male tribute is Peeta Mellark, a former schoolmate of Katniss who once gave her bread from his family's bakery when her family was starving. In the days leading up to the Games in the Capitol, they are advised by their drunken mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, the sole living District 12 victor of the Hunger Games; chaperone Effie Trinket; and various stylists to enhance their public perception to get potential sponsors, who will send potentially life-saving gifts during the Games. Katniss's stylist, Cinna, designs costumes for Katniss and Peeta that set them apart from the tributes when introduced to the public. Due to Katniss's fire-themed dress, she becomes known as the “Girl on Fire”. During their evaluation by the Gamemakers, Katniss gets the highest score among the tributes. Meanwhile, Rue, the petite 12-year-old girl tribute from District 11, follows Katniss and Peeta around during the training sessions. On the day before the games, in the televised interview with Caesar Flickerman, Peeta reveals his long-unrequited love for Katniss; she is initially shocked by this and believes this is a ploy to gain sponsors, but later accepts this as sincere. Haymitch promotes their image as "star-crossed lovers". The Games begin, and nearly half the tributes are killed at the start whilst fighting over the weapons and supplies throughout the arena. Katniss disregards Haymitch's earlier advice to flee immediately and nearly dies but uses her well-practiced hunting and survival skills to hide in the woods. After a few days, an artificial fire drives Katniss toward the others. She is spotted and chased up a tree by the "Career tributes" from Districts 1, 2, and 4, and Peeta, who seems to have allied with them. Rue, hiding in a nearby tree, silently alerts Katniss to a “tracker jacker” nest. Katniss cuts it down, releasing the flying insects, which are genetically modified to track whoever disturbs their nest and have venom that targets the section of their victims’ minds that houses fear. Their venom kills two of the Careers and drives the others away, but Katniss is stung and begins hallucinating. Peeta returns, but instead of killing her, tells her to run away. Katniss later allies with Rue, who is fatally wounded by a tribute from District 1 while Katniss destroys the careers' supplies. Katniss kills Rue's killer with an arrow and accompanies Rue as she dies. She spreads flowers over Rue's body to show her defiance against the Capitol. In gratitude, Rue's district sends Katniss a loaf of bread. A rule change is announced, allowing the tributes from the same district to win as a pair. Katniss finds Peeta (who only allied with the Careers to protect Katniss) camouflaged into a river bank, having been injured by Cato, one of the Careers. She nurses Peeta back to health as best she can, but he is still gravely injured. Katniss pretends to be madly in love with Peeta in an attempt to gain gifts from sponsors. When the Gamemakers send a delivery of what each contestant needs most, Katniss risks her life to obtain medicine for Peeta. She is intercepted by Career Tribute Clove, who gloats over Rue's death and tries to kill Katniss, but is killed by Thresh, the male District 11 tribute, who spares Katniss for Rue's sake. The medicine saves Peeta's life. Once Katniss and Peeta become the last two survivors, the Gamemakers revoke the rule change to force one to kill the other for a dramatic finale. In defiance, Katniss prepares to consume poisonous "nightlock" berries with Peeta. Realizing they intend to commit suicide so that there will not be a victor for the games, the Gamemakers declare Katniss and Peeta the victors. Although both of them receive a hero's welcome as a couple, Katniss is warned by Haymitch that the Capitol may take action against her for her defiance. Along the way back to District 12, Peeta is heartbroken to learn that Katniss's actions were part of a calculated ploy to gain sympathy. Katniss, however, is unsure of her own feelings and her future.

I hope the movie will be a 10/10 as well *-* I also wonder how the prequel would affect your reading of the actual HG trilogy if you ever feel likendoing a video on that. I think most people read it obviously the other way around so it could be interesting to be introduced to the capitol the other way around and to see how much changes from the prequel to the main story. The comments you're getting under this video are so unhinged and weird tho lmfao

I read the trilogy three times before the prequel even came out and I definitely enjoyed it this way, it's so interesting to know what will happen in the future and then see the beginnings of it in the prequel, but I can imagine it will also be cool to read the prequel first, so I don't think there's a right or wrong, but I would probably just go by the release dates

I finished reading the book like 2ish months ago and seen the trailers - I can confirm; he is hot and there’s no denying it (and I have read the other books and I don’t care). Also, did that scene in the trailer actually happen?? I swear Lucy Gray never got in the water, she just sat by it (not that I’m complaining, it looks really cool, I’m just wondering if I’m making that up)

Six months after winning the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark have returned home to District 12, the poorest sector of Panem. Prior to Katniss and Peeta's "Victory Tour" of the country, President Snow visits Katniss and tells her that her televised acts of defiance in the previous Games have inspired rebellion among the districts. Snow demands that Katniss convince the country that she was acting out of love for Peeta, not against the Capitol, or her entire family and best friend Gale Hawthorne will be executed. Katniss reveals this threat to her mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, but not to Peeta. The tour’s first stop is District 11, home of Katniss's Hunger Games ally Rue. Peeta announces that he will give part of his winnings to the families of Rue and fellow tribute Thresh, and Katniss delivers an impromptu, heartfelt speech expressing her gratitude to the fallen tributes. An old man salutes Katniss, joined by the crowd; to her horror, the old man is immediately executed. Katniss tells Peeta of Snow’s threat, and they continue the tour as normal. Hoping to placate Snow, Peeta proposes to Katniss during a televised interview in the Capitol. Katniss accepts, but Snow is dissatisfied with her performance, leaving her afraid for her loved ones. Returning to District 12, now overrun with harsher Peacekeepers to enforce the Capitol's rule, Katniss discovers an uprising has broken out in District 8. Gale is caught poaching and is whipped in the town square until Haymitch intervenes. Gale is taken to Katniss's mother to be healed. While hunting in the woods, Katniss meets Bonnie and Twill, refugees from District 8, whose uprising has failed. They plan to reach District 13 - believed to be destroyed in the first rebellion against the Capitol - in the hope that the residents are actually underground. Katniss is injured climbing back over District 12’s now live electric fence. Preparing for her upcoming wedding, Katniss learns that Districts 3 and 4 have also risen up against the Capitol. The Capitol announces the 75th Hunger Games, with a twist - tributes will be selected from the surviving victors of the previous Games. As District 12's sole female victor, Katniss realizes she must compete alongside either Haymitch or Peeta. Haymitch is chosen and is unable to stop Peeta volunteering in his place. At the Capitol, Haymitch urges Katniss to find allies, but she bonds with the weakest tributes. Katniss and Peeta do their best to taunt the Capitol in their private training sessions: Katniss presenting a hanging dummy of Seneca Crane and Peeta with a portrait of Rue. In the televised interview, Katniss's stylist Cinna transforms the white wedding gown Snow insisted she wear into a black dress of feathers resembling a mockingjay, a symbol of the rebellion. Peeta decides to try anything he can to halt the games by creating a lie that Katniss is pregnant. To the dismay of everyone, the games still go on. Before Katniss is sent into the arena, she watches helplessly as Cinna is beaten and dragged out by Peacekeepers. Katniss and Peeta ally themselves with Finnick Odair from District 4 and Mags, his 80-year-old mentor. Peeta is knocked out by the jungle arena’s force field, and the party later has to flee from a poisonous fog. Mags sacrifices herself to allow Finnick to save the weakened Peeta. Katniss and Peeta ally with Johanna Mason from District 7 and “exceptionally smart” Beetee and Wiress from District 3. Wiress reveals that the arena is arranged like a clock, with each danger occurring at a fixed time and place for one hour. Wiress is killed, and in retaliation Katniss and Johanna kill the District 1 tributes. The remaining members of Katniss's group work on Beetee's plan to harness lightning to electrocute the District 2 tributes, who later interfere and disrupt the plan. Katniss uses her bow and arrow to direct the lightning into the force field, destroying it and knocking her unconscious. Katniss wakes up en route to District 13 with Finnick, Beetee, and Haymitch. She learns from Haymitch and Plutarch Heavensbee, the Head Gamemaker, that there had been a secret plan to rescue Katniss, now the living symbol of the rebellion. Peeta, along with Johanna and District 2 tribute Enobaria, have been captured by the Capitol. She later learns from Gale that, though her family and some other residents have escaped, District 12 has been destroyed.

Thanks for this input! I'm someone who only took down Catching Fire posters in their room like last month and since reading the prequel I've been debating whether I should take my non-hunger-games-knowing brother to see the film. The book REVOLVES around the future of the universe, the story is built around references and explanations for fans of the original series which creates issues when it's meant to stand on its own and in a way, I don't think the storyline was objectively very good. If we didn't know what happens 63 years later, it would have been written very differently. But the evolution of Snow into a sociopath, or rather his coming out as one, could still make for an interesting film

I think the book left him underdeveloped even though its his backstory! Honestly the last two chapters are a mess. The book is so good in building his character as a manipulative and ruthless leader in the first two thirds but the last third is just him in distric 12 then he trys to kill LG goes back home and gets everthing he wants/needs to get into power. The trilogy had all these GoT level references to his tactics and manipulations and I was really disappointed that it didn't show him evolve besides "I like girl now I hate girl because power is better" 😅

Agree and disagree. I don't think he ever really loved Lucy Gray. He was fascinated by her because she was nothing like the girls he knew from Capitol. She was weird, she was a mystery and she was going to die. Still, his thought processes would run mostly on "how to improve his own situation" rather than "how to help her survive, for her own sake". Even when he did come to the realization that he wanted her to survive beyond the scope of making him the winning mentor and bettering his odds at getting a scholarship for the university, he still wanted her to survive FOR HIM. Because he wanted to have her for himself. Tbh I also didn't really get "being really in love with Snow" vibes from Lucy Gray, either. I think she was just charmed by him, because he was also all so different from everyone she knew, and he (from Lucy Gray's perspective) cared about her, when he was her mentor, and she was presumably going to die. So it doesn't really surprise me that he'd turn on her, since there wasn't a deep care for her well-being, just caring for her as HIS girlfriend (which in his mind apparently equalled possession). I actually expected the story would end up with him turning on her, although I thought she would actually somehow betray him, and only then he'd turn on her. The brilliance of this story is that, she didn't even have to betray him in order for him to turn against her. And that's something I didn't account for, reading it. At the end of the day, it didn't matter to the story WHETHER Lucy Gray betrayed, or would've betrayed him. All that mattered was what Snow was ready to CONVINCE himself of. He always wanted power, ever since we first "meet him" in Capitol and probably long before that. He wanted the power that would come with being in the chain of command, which to him would be a second place prize compared to what he'd have gotten if he was allowed to attend the university. Better that than nothing, though. But he was too scared that the truth of Mayfair's death would come to light. In his mind, the only real choice was to stay, and end up like Sejanus, on a hanging tree, or to run. That's why he went with Lucy Gray, not because of his feelings for her. So when he saw an opportunity to go back - being able to destroy evidence of his deed - his mind instantly spinned the reality into "now Lucy Gray is THE evidence of the deed that could cost me my career" and thus he had to get rid of her - not go mention he kind of obliged himself to run away with her. Another obstacle to what he really wanted. I think what really seals it and makes everything that went down since the cottage believable, was the whole ordeal with Sejanus. Snow must've known deep down that if he pressed the button, Sejanus would die. Even if he didn't admit to it to himself in the conscious thoughts we read. He actually had a gift to gaslighting himself that everything he did was justified, and that he was a victim, and that everyone else was to blame, even for his own decisions. That's what he does with Lucy Gray at the end. It's her fault that he'll have to kill her, because she witnessed the killing AND because she was armed with a knife. He'd have no choice but to kill her, right? Just like he had no choice but sending Sejanus off to certain death. What I agree with is that the ending felt rushed. When I read, I keep an eye on how many pages are left, especially towards the end. We were at 40, then 30 pages, and he was still escaping with her. So the whole resolution really did feel like a last second thought. But, I still think the ending is brilliant, in that him wanting to go back and turning on Lucy Gray is set up "psychologically" throughout the entire book and doesn't really seem out of character. Unlike Daenerys (spoilers from season 8 of GoT but you were the one mentioning the show xd) who lost a dragon and didn't get laid and suddenly she turns into a madwoman, who burns hundreds of thousands of civilians, when just a season or two ago, half of all she cared about was injust cruelty that tyrants enacted upon common folk. Yeah, mate, and Katniss started hunting down 12 yos from Capitol with her bow. Anyway sorry if I've been runbling without making any sense at any point but I'm getting really sleepy but I also really wanna write this down, lol.
