The first 100 chapters is the prologue of the series, ending with (Logue)town, which was where Roger was born and executed (his own prologue and epilogue) Now you're entering the Grand Line where the bulk of the main story will happen. Arcs will get denser and denser as it goes on, not just denser, but some are much longer too. Don't worry if you end up needing to split some of the longer arcs up into multiple videos.
Just so you know, in Japanese L's and R's are pretty much indistinguishable from each other so any name discrepancy you notice involving Ls and Rs (Zoro Vs Zolo, Alabasta vs Arabasta etc.) Is pretty much semantics depending on what translation you prefer
Eh... Yes and no. A lot of the time they're really going for something in English rather than Japanese. Alabasta is Alabasta because of the mineral 'alabaster', which plays into the theme for that. Then we've got Loguetown which is 100% supposed to be Loguetown because it's the "town of the beginning and the end". ProLogue and EpiLogue.
@@flux_casey i agree I just didn't feel it was worth going into that much detail and instead opted to just give a brief explanation for the discrepancy
The SBSs sometimes give you some cool and interesting information about the world/characters so it's always good to read, also the cover stories are cool and important for later on, and you can see how the world is so alive outside from the main story and characters, life keeps going. Oh, and some arcs are super long (50-100 chapters), but for the shorter ones like this one, it's probably better to review them together. Maybe you could do Whisky Peak and Little Garden together? but it's fine either way, it's up to you and how you enjoy reading the story, I just love when new one piece fans share their thoughts about this amazing manga. Love your energy!
Yes! SBS sometimes contain crucial information, for example the hierarchy of Marine ranks and the World Government ranks, which weren't explicitly stated in the story.
Im so delighted you decided to make another video so soon! I really recommend a weekly or at least twice monthly release schedule to allow new folks to start getting attached to your personality! Arcs keep getting better form here and im sure all us fans are DYING for you to get to some moments! Please consider this despite not originally having it in your plans to release more so soon
Oh man i was SO close to tearing up during the scene when Luffy attacked Laboon and told him to wait for him only so Laboon will be determined to stay alive until then🥺
One Piece certainly brings a whole lot light into someone’s life. The characters often put a smile on your face. Most of the time you’d find yourself ‘trapped’ in the world they’re living in. I guess that’s the power of literature. What’s real and what’s not, it’s up to you to find out.
At the end there, Crocus was just talking to Roger, not that he's actually right there or anything, it's just meant to imply that he met Roger at some point. A one sided conversation, like something you would say at someone's grave, remembering them and "talking to them".
@@apoptosisduellinks109 Plenty of first time readers get it simply from the context of the scene. Gavin didn't and was confused so I explained. It's a perfectly reasonable conclusion to come to with zero future knowledge.
@@Gus_Na It's also a reasonable conclusion to think that Crocus only knew about Roger from stories and newspapers and not personally. Yet you stated it as a fact that Roger personally knew Roger, instead of as a possible interpretation, thereby excluding other possibilities such as that Roger was hiding on Crocus' island after surviving his exection, etc. I think you were giving away unnecessarily much. Gavin was confused because Crocus could mean different things, such as that Laboon has a secret name as Roger, which is natural (and intended). So his confusion wasn't even necessarily bad
@@apoptosisduellinks109what r u rambling on abt? I read the manga way before it became available online, so future knowledge was almost irrelevant since the latest vol at the time was vol 18 I think. (I started with vol 16 and proceeded to buy the previous and subsequent manga afterwards) So, back to topic, I came to the same conclusion when I 1st read the chapter. We might be wrong coz who knows, it could be Oda-sensei taking us on a ride again. But, the most reasonable conclusion to be made from that is that Crocus met Roger at some point b4 he was executed and they had a conversation abt this b4. That's the most likely thing that Oda-sensei wanted to convey at this time.
In my opinion, this format is really good as long as you're comfortable with it. In the future, you sadly can't do a mini-review for each chapters because some arcs can have over 50 chapters. So, sometimes you even have to split the arcs into 2 or 3 sections. And Usopp's name is a wordplay. "Uso" is the Japanese world for "lie", which is combined with "sop" from "Aesop's Tales". Maybe this information will help you pronounce his name better. Thanks for your review!
Actually Luffy doesn't have street smarts nor he has much IQ, But Luffy has very high level of EQ. That's what you felt as his smartness in your east blue saga review. The Laboon episode where a Luffy fights the whale, challenges it and promises it to fight it again after he returns in an year... THIS DISPLAYS LUFFY'S EQ. Luffy kinda understood that the whale is hopeful over something that won't be fulfilled and there is no other purpose to the whale which makes the whale stick to it's older expectation of waiting for those pirate group. HOWEVER, Luffy fights the whale to give it a brand new purpose to live for, and rejuvenating it's hope to fulfill its new purpose of defeating Luffy in a dual after 1 year. In this way Luffy Gave Laboon a purpose to live for and not inflict damage onto itself in desperation to search for it's lost crew, by moving on to a new purpose from its older expectation to meet that pirate group. *** Coming to Luffy's naivity, And most of all, Luffy is like a force of nature... Like we saw with Don Krieg or Arlong... So even Luffy innocently shouts to leave someone alone , and even though those bad guys doesn't listen to him, Luffy is strong enough (generally speaking) to subdue them... Just like he defeated Captain Kuro or Arlong... Luffy is a person who doesn't have any inner monologues. He just speaks out what he thinks... That's it. It's not childish per se, but that's who he is. And his EQ and physical strength, abilities compensate for his lack of other intelligence and street smarts. But like you said, he has a long way to go, as he has to learn and grow through his experiences to become a better version of himself. And Luffy drawing his Strawhat JollyRoger on Laboon's head and instructing it that it's their contract of combat and he better not damage it, Luffy is here giving Laboon a hope that Luffy WILL RETURN and that's a reason for the whale to wait without getting desperate and hurting itself by ramming over the Red line continent.
I had no idea Luffy didn't have an internal dialogue but now that you mention it, I can't remember any time in which we read or hear him thinking anything unless it's like 'MEATTT' or something
Think of this as HIGH HIGH HIGH fantasy because not even humans and animals are biologically similar to real world counterparts. This world has its own rules from the ground up, even as many things are similar.
Really surprised that you have Baratie only at 7 and Loguetown at 6. Even more surprised that Romance Dawn is rated so high! Definitely an unusual opinion on early arcs. Interesting. Early moments that tend to hit people emotionally are usually Sanji and Nami's backstories. BTW. Cover stories are really important and tie into the main story, so I'd highly advise for you to read those too. SBSs also sometimes drop some lore and are often very funny. Also, I don't think it's needed to review chapter by chapter. That'll be almost impossible with arcs that have a lot, and I mean A LOT, chapters.
I love Laboon! It's amazing how Oda manages to get us attached to characters so damn quickly. And this was a great display of Luffy's character as well, he's stupid as heck, but damn he's SUCH a good person, you can't help but be drawn to him. He's literally sunshine personified ☀️ and about getting to the Grand Line already, since their pirate adventure officially begins in the Grand Line, Oda gave himself the goal of getting there by 100 chapters. I think you'll definitely find Whiskey Peak intriguing because that's where the Alabasta saga really begins. This was great! Super excited for you to make your way through the next saga and can't wait for the next vlog :) you're making me want to read the manga as well 😂 or at least rewatch the anime
I love having a new queer voice in the one piece community :) This series made me deal with a lot of personal issues, including coming out and dealing with internalized homophobia! You haven't met them yet, but there are some great queer characters in one piece! It might be a tad sexist here and there but it is rare for a manga to be this progressive, especially in the genre of shonen! Enjoy your journey and welcome to the crew!
It's gonna make a lot more sense going by arc as you move forward because the big kind of "centerpiece" ones atleast get longer & longer. For example, the most recent arc we just finished was 128 chapters.
Luffy's definitely an idiot in most ways, but he's basically a genius when it comes to certain things like reading people's emotions and knowing what kind of help they need. Also when it comes to using his powers and just fighting in general, he's incredibly creative.
Yeah Luffy is basically: 0% real intelligence/common sense 100% emotional intelligence 200% food Basically he is the most genuine, understanding but at the same time naive person - with an insatiable appetite - that you will ever meet.
Crocus is doing what people do when they speak towards a departed friend Also I recommend doing your vlog style for the chapters then doing a more In depth review at the end once you've collected your thoughts on the arc overall and going over your favorite story and character moments or if you pick up on any of the greater one piece mysteries trust me you'll come across them
As a Longtime-Onepiece-Reader i recommend uyou stay with the Arcsystem for now. later some arcs get longer where u may want to split them into 2 vids or make a long video. i enjoy seeing someone get into this world i enjoy for so long. i have a advice for you: if u are confronted with something u dont understand (crocos saying roger for ex.) write it down. sometimes things are getting explained, but often things get important way later in the story, and a list is a good thing to keep them present for you, because Oda packs so many mysterys into the story.
3:05 It's both. Ls and Rs are interchangeable in Japanese, so you can go with Alabasta (in reference to alabaster and how much it was used in ancient Egypt) or with Arabasta (in reference to Arab) and both would be right, as it's probably a play on both words
Gavin : I just read the Walking Dead series, it tore my heart out, I hope One Piece doesn't. Laboon : Allow me to introduce myself. Me : You have no idea man, there is a rollercoaster of highs and lows of emotions in this series, prepare yourself.
I'm happy you are enjoying yourself that much! I didn't expect another review so soon. Yes, Crocus was talking to GolD Roger, more thinking out loud than talking really. The suspension of disbelief is right for the series, but I don't think it really needs to apply with the Log Poses. For me, it makes sense for people living in the Grand Line to have them. How else could they go from one island to another or return home? Both Crocus and Mr 9 and Miss Wednesday are living in the Grand Line. Personally I really liked the Reverse Mountain arc in the anime too, so I do recommend it for you to watch (even though it was after a filler arc). Thank you for the video! Should I be waiting for the Whiskey Peak arc review soon? I really liked the new format, but I'll be fine with whatever suits you best.
this format feels so personal and cozy and reminds me of my own read through, I’m gonna miss it once you get to the longer arcs upcoming after alabasta, but for these shorter arcs definitely this format its lovely! For the Upcoming bigger arcs, The Saga but reviewing each arc could also work, Ex: Jaya/Skypeia overall about 80 chapters so 8-ish volumes, most saga’s follow this format. (Edit: Just checked the arc list to refresh myself, and except for a few saga’s most of then are 2 arcs so maybe later review the saga but arc by arc.) Excited for more, glad you’re loving one piece (Still very excited for your Water 7/Enies Lobby review 🫣)
Muahaha couldn’t stay away could you? *hair flip* 🤩 also btw in this pic I’m cosplaying a one piece character and wearing Luffys hat lmao 🤣 Edit: Also I don’t mind if you do reviews by smaller arcs Or large sagas! I’ll take any OP content.
Yo m8, I'm loving your reaction to OP. I suggest to do a full arc review, and if the arc is long, like Wano Act 3 Onigashima war, that is like 130 chapters long, try to break it into peaces(giggles). Welcome to the journey to Laugh Tale "nakama"
There are a lot of SBS questions that ask "Does [insert DF user name here] DF affect the dick?" and the answer that Oda gives is always "Yes. yes it does."
Both Alabasta and Arabasta are used within the fandom, but I believe there is a general consensus that Arabasta is more... "correct"? Since it's a kingdom based in Arabian culture, I feel like *Arab* -asta was Oda's intented name. L doesn't exist in Japanese, so Oda spells the kingdom's name in a way that could be read in both ways (Arabasta/Alabasta). This isn't the only toponym in One Piece that has been difficult to romanise accurately, so don't worry if you call it Alabasta
They are both correct because both romanization are used in the manga, so Oda wasn't very consistent with it. I believe the wiki adopts "Arabasta" because that was the romanization seen during in a map during the arc itself, but you can find "Alabasta" on more recent chapter covers.
In Japanese language R and L are interchangeable and really depends on personal preference and regional accents. So both R and L pronunciation of everything in One Piece are pretty much right. Sometimes for obviously English words it's easy to tell what the author meant but otherwise it's a preference. For example Luffy is spelled with an L in English but several voice actors in the original animations pronounce it as Ruffy. And that is a-ok. Same with Loguetown/Roguetown. Alabasta/Arabasta. Later on as the series became more globally acclaimed, Oda made some efforts to make sure the English spelling and pronunciation was more obvious as to which one he had in mind. Early series there was a lot of vague L/R conundrums. The most famous example is Zoro. Zoro is meant to be spelled with an R in English but since that is a reference to a copyrighted character Zorro in English (a famous vigilante swordsman), the English translations used the fact that it could be R or L and spell Zoro's name as Zolo in most official English translations to this day to avoid copyright issues and for consistency in spelling. And technically because in Japanese they are both the correct letter, the English version could be either one as well. Oda cleared up some of the English spelling preferences over the years, and some just became widely accepted fan favorites of how something is spelled or pronounced and thus widely accepted as the "correct" way to say/write the names of places and people. So in the future just pick what sounds the easiest to say to you, and if it isn't how it is supposed to be said/written, people in the comments will correct you.
Yeah one piece was what I was thinking about when I heard you talking into my ear 😅. Our favorite bit of rubber in a story over a mountain where the liquid climbs up to the peak and shoots it down one side into a big mouth. That swallowed the whole lot of us whole.
I think it's okay to begin with sagas and then split it into arcs as you go and it grows denser, because you don't wanna end up reading only a few chapters and unsure what to review. I loved this format too, it's just that I feel since some islands are building up to others and don't go on for long, it might be more connected to read them as a whole saga. Especially if you're going to be leaving some time between each read. I'm all for consuming one piece at your own pace and slowly but if you wanna keep reviewing like this it might suit you to make a length-based plan than sticking to arcs. If you were to daily read a chapter then that's consuming slowly and all great but since you pause between each read, I feel like at this stage it's easier to group some arcs in some cases so you don't forget the details of where you left off especially if it's setting up the stage for the later arc. Maybe you could group the shorter arcs together, like Whiskey Peak and what follows, while reading only one arc when it becomes something bigger with more going on like Alabasta. In the future, you'll need to divide an arc into parts too because some are really long, but at this stage you might need to group some of them so you won't end up with few chapters material to work with and more importantly, read, because I imagine it was tough reading only 5 chapters and having to wait another two weeks to pick up. Unless you're planning on making this a more weekly thing or so, then perhaps a few chapters at a time are ideal. Great review, and welcome onboard! You're also right about many details that will be important later and things that will tie back into the story, so keep your eyes open!
I'm a little sad there won't be longer videos, but I'm still happy you're enjoying One Piece. You might want to do Whiskey Peak and Little Garden together, and then Alabasta, so they'll be a closer length. But however you decide it's all the same in the end lol. Laboon is such a good part of the overall story, but I can't tell you why!
"I'm a little sad there won't be longer videos" That was a 25min video about Reverse Mountain... If he keeps that up, we will get 5 hour videos once we get to Alabasta 😂 Edit: not that I would complain 😋
Laboon🥺😭 So glad you're enjoying One Piece! Also, I love that you decided to review by arc! Some arcs are VERY long so probably won't be able to do by chapter🤔 But for short ones like this arc I love the format!
I believe arc to arc is the best format but feel free to combine smaller arcs like reverse mountain and whiskey peak or to split up much larger arcs that can go upwards of over 200 chapters in one case (lmao literally 1/5 of the story so far but damn is it a good arc). But in the end this is your one piece journey and you enjoy it however you see fit. Love the vids can’t wait to see the next one❤️
I think chapter-by-chapter works for these earlier arcs, as they are short. But Alabasta is going to be too long for that format, probably... Drum Island as well? Might work better to just read the arcs and take notes on the most worthwhile moments that stuck with you. I know later in the series the arcs just get longer and longer. But whatever works for you honestly, it's just nice to see you enjoying it :)
I just started with OP manga reviews on YT so I'm quite late. But now, he caught up so no more spoilers. 17:35 "I imagine that's the end of the whale storyline" 😂😂😂😢😢😢
We welcome One piece jokes around here 🤣😂😁👒 I say alabasta cause I grew up saying it that way I use to say neeeji instead of Neji in Naruto before he was animated into the show so I understand the confusion in Usopp's pronunciation I'll say it again I love that whale 😭💕🐋🐳 Laboon has a very special story to tell
Oh, you dont gotta apologize for pronunciation lol. We'll help you out. I'll leave a little guide here for japanese pronunciation. It's kinda like Spanish, in that the letters make the same sounds EVERY time, so once you get the hang of pronouncing stuff it gets easy to pronounce new words you read. English is a nightmare with how all the letters can have different sounds depending on context. The main thing with japanese words is that they do NOT put emphasis on syllables. This is something English speakers naturally want to do, but it's the source of many mispronunciations. For example, when an English speaker reads "katakana", they naturally want to say "kataKAAAAna". What you want to do is break it into its syllables individually "ka ta ka na", say them one by one with the same emphasis. Then say them a little faster. Then a little faster, until you've smashed the syllables into one word. The other big thing is just learning what constitutes a "syllable". Every japanese character constitutes a syllable. There's a symbol for each of the vowels "a e i o u", a symbol for "n", and every other symbol is a consonant+vowel "ka ke ki ko ku" etc etc. So, all your syllables are gonna be 1 or 2 letters. 2 vowels right next to each other are always part of different syllables. If you apply just those 2 ideas, your japanese pronunciation will become better than 99% of non-japanese speakers. There's a lot more to it, tone shifting and knowing where little mouth pauses are and stuff, but just these ideas will get you by a lot better than most English speakers. We got your back anyways! Don't worry about it too much. Looking forward to going on this journey with you!
The world of one piece is absurdist, so if someone if almost dead one day and walking around with bandages the next, its accepted (of course there are instances when characters do get grievous wounds but the mangakas usually make those moments more pronounced). Another example is a "regular" person lifting a ton with 1 hand (also accepted). And you're reviewing the chapters perfectly (talk about the chapter and give your feedback). Oh and one piece is packed with foreshadowing, easter eggs, and nuances so keep asking your questions about the world, 9 times out of 10 they'll get addressed 300 chapters later.
Hmmm, I'm not a fan of Whiskey Peak, I think it's the equivalent of Syrup Village for this Saga. But, it only goes up from there! This Saga is another good hook for people, lol.
I think I'll start reading One Piece (I've only watched it) so that I can follow your journey. By the way, if you use The Storygraph, there's a One Piece challenge on it.
There is no L in Japanese so they transliterate foreign Ls into Japanese as Rs. But since they do that we don't know if a Japanese R is supposed to be a foreign L unless we know which word it actually is... Which sucks for names unless they have meaning like Alabasta is said to come from Alabaster... If the word is 100%japanese though it will always be an R... Since as I mentioned L does not exist in Japanese... Some translators and sometimes even Japanese speakers make the mistake of thinking Rs become Ls (since sometimes Japanese people does not even understand the concept of the difference between them)
I like you doing it by arcs. But some arcs are super long. So I would prefer you review it as a whole instead of by chapter because it would be a bit too long to do. Also, keep in mind that your viewers have watched many OP reviewers and probably read the manga themselves multiple times. So by reviewing it by chapter, you are essentially just recapping the story to people who are already pros at every detail. It's not very interesting to be told a story you know everything about. Haha. So instead of recapping, me personally would like to hear your views, feelings, and thoughts about the story while referencing scenes that you're talking about. Of course this is entirely up to you
I love watching your reactions. Gods you reminds of so many ppl who've had many of your same reactions. Enjoy your journey into this madness that we all welcome you too.
the absurdity part usually happens on people who hasn't see enough anime yet.. the humor and weirdness is kind of too asian.. but once you get used to it, you'll probably love this series more and more.. also, this story has so many easter eggs all over the place, the author doesn't want to explicitly or deliberately say, "this part is important" or "remember this" its up to us readers/fans to catch everything once the things unfolds.. and that's the magic in it, like if you're a faithful on understanding what's happening in the story, you'll never get lost, and somehow in a way or another, things for the most part always makes sense.. i believe, this story (journey) will only be truly enjoyed by people who genuinely and faithfully believe that this adventure is worth our time.. if you embraced that you have been part of them(the crew) you'll most likely feel that you've known them and understand them even if they haven't been on screen(panel) for some period of time. Hope more gets interested on it through you..
Fun fact the 4kids version of one piece which was very changed and censored completely removed laboon and just made him an iceberg and Luffy blew it up
I remember Merphy saying the exact same thing about "embrace the absurdity". Which is what you must do, really. it's just easier for those, like me, that were used to the genre. It's funny seeing you two saying the same thing.
Yay new One Piece video! Fun fact: Usopp is pronounced Yusopp in my local language adaptation too so I completely understand that 😁 You're honestly becoming one of my most anticipated RU-vidrs reviewing the series so I can't wait to watch the next upload!
ok, reading by arc sounds good, it probably won't take long until you overtake me with your read, but I am good until the next vlog, I have already read the whisky peak arc
Just some little linguistic fun facts in case you have not been made aware: Usopp's name is a reference to the Japanese word "uso" 噓, meaning "lie" ... for quite obvious reasons :D Nami's name just straight up is the Japanese word "nami" 波, meaning "wave" The name of Loguetown references the words prologue and epilogue, fitting for a place that saw the end of the pirate king and the beginning of Luffy's journey. Captain Kuro means "Captain Black", as "kuro" 黒 in Japanese is the color black. Some translations of One Piece also translate his name, others leave it as "Kuro"
@HowtotrainyourGavin I just thought to tell you this, whatever you do don't read the movie titles until your at the fishman saga arc because one of the movie titles completely spoilers a pretty major characters death in the TITLE! Literally "Overcoming 'characters' Death" is the title... like wtf who green lit that!?!?!?!
Love your reviews. But take your time and enjoy the journey. It's always better to take an extra week if you feel you need it, than to stress through it and miss all the small details and world building. One Piece is all about the journey and not the destination.
I'm so glad you're reading this faster. I'm happy I won't have to wait for a month. I really enjoyed this format rather than reading the whole saga. I Loved hearing more of your thoughts rather than just a recap. Also I watched your one piece unboxing video multiple times because I was excited to see more people get into One Piece.
I also took a while to pronounce Hermione's name right in English - mostly because in French we say it like you said it, and it sounds so different that I was in denial about the English pronunciation for a while lol
When you do watch the reverse mountain arc in the anime, there will be a part where a guy comes out of no where and is kicked off the ship. That's just a filler character from some filler arc, don't worry about it.
Uso means “lie” in Japanese. And he tells tall tails like Aesop fables. So Uso + Aesop = Usopp. And it’s called helming a ship when you take control of the helm to steer it.
I think reviewing the arc is the best way, however I think chapter by chapter will become too hard at some point so you'll want to group couple of chapters together
Enjoying this format, and enjoy that you've gone to arc reviews instead. They will get chunky later on, lemme tell ya! As for Whiskey Peak, I think you'll find some things to enjoy in it, though it's short. Still a good time, though!
They do have a long way to go but that's also big part of the charm of the series. They all grow and learn stuff the way they go and they are a great crew I love them.😁❤️ Can't wait to see your journey with reading One Piece ❤️
Let's just say with sagas we just entered the final saga and the one before it was 6 arcs long and 4 of these arcs were all longer than East Blue in it's entirety. So Arc by arc will take longer than east blue later down the line while sagas will take multiple months. Personally I caught up during the Dressrosa arc in about 1-2 years, but that was watching the anime while also going to college. You made a great choice by reading the manga instead of watching the anime. I switched to manga during the Dressrosa arc as well since each episode wasn't worth the wait as much as each chapter is. Like in each chapter at least nowadays 90% of the time there will be something you can discuss and theorise over until the next chaper releases no problem. Also Baroque Works saga has 4 more arcs after Reverse Mountain. Whiskey Peak, Green Garden, Drum Island and the legendary arc itself that made many fall in love with the series Alabasta.
Never seen a chapter by chapter review. Most people read a few chapters at a time and review them together, which definitely becomes the standard when the arks become tens if not hundred of chapters long
the wast blue saga was 2 years of publications, it was a long time coming if you were there from the start. that aspect is forever lost to people getting on board later unfortunately
the next arc is a lot of set up and world building and it s fun so you will probably enjoy it ! =) and for how to chop the serie for your review, arc is a good base but you can adapte it to fit your preference, in the early part of one piece arc are shorter than in the later part so you can groupe up some if you prefer, later it will be more comlicated but you will see ^^
i love how there there is a such a wave of new one piece reader from the traditionally novel community. It started when murphy picked it up now everyone is picking it up . To this day i have not met anyone who has read one piece and said its bad.
