CLIP DESCRIPTION:
C.D. (Steve Martin) uses his tennis racket to thrash a pair of bullying drunks.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This modernization of Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac casts Steve Martin as C. D. Bates, the fearless, quick-witted fire chief of a Washington State resort town. Bates' most trusted fireman is the handsome but tongue-tied Chris McDonell (Rick Rossovich). Both men are in love with the beautiful Roxanne Kowalski (Darryl Hannah), but Bates, adorned with a huge nose that makes Bob Hope look like Nanette Fabray, is convinced that he's too homely to win Roxanne's heart. Thus, in the self-sacrificing tradition of Cyrano de Bergerac, Bates courts Roxanne vicariously by feeding his rival Chris the proper romantic words and phrases. The inherent pathos in Roxanne is offset by moments of slapstick, notably the scene wherein C. D. Bates vanquishes a pair of hooligans with a tennis racket. Steve Martin himself is credited with the screenplay for Roxanne, though he generously cites Edmond Rostand as his inspiration.

This film was a modern retelling of the famous story of Cyrano de Bergerac. In the original story Cyrano de Bergerac was a nobleman serving in the French Army in the 1800's and was famous for his skills with a sword. This scene pays homage to that significant aspect of the original story and helps to reinforce the film's connection to the original character. The 1950 version starring José Ferrer is considered by many to be the definitive "film version" of the original 1897 story, but I will always like this 1987 effort a bit more, maybe because it took itself less serious.

You're off by nearly 2 centuries. The original Cyrano de Bergerac was born AND died in the 17th century. By the 19th century men were carrying firearms rather than swords.
@alextepe4309
@alextepe4309 2 года назад
True, but in the early part of the 19th century all that was available were flintlocks that only fired a single shot and were tedious to reload. That was why the sword, and the skills to use it, were still essential. A Victorian gentleman was still expected to be skilled in the art of swordsmanship. Many of which kept them concealed in a cane.

And a mere 18 years later, they were shooting firemen, blocking roads so they couldn't get to the fire and in some cases, throwing Molotovs at fire trucks that had firemen in them (trying to roast them alive) and bricks as the firemen escaped their burning trucks.

Why are they carrying ski gear? What variation of tennis did they plan on playing?
@BeeWhistler

Same question. Best I can figure is that they might have been carrying stuff they’d had repaired while playing tennis or had just bought and were bringing it all home or something. It’s odd, though, for him to be the one with the tennis racket.

The sound effects are a bit goofy and unnecessary for the movie. Almost like they didn't have enough confidence in the script. Reminds me of a cheesy kung fu flick only the lip flaps are properly timed with the spoken english.
@BeeWhistler
@BeeWhistler 3 года назад
I’m not sure what you were expecting from a cartoonish comedy fight scene. They aren’t putting the sounds in to pad the humor. They’re doing it because they think it’s funny. It’s kind of a reference in spots to the original story, where this would have been an actual sword fight. It’s lampooning, who cares if there’s extra sound effects? And I found it hilarious.

Most people consider this scene funny, but in reality you have to imagine how many times he got beaten up, abuse, and laugh at, so he had to learn to defend himself...and all because of the crime of having a big nose. Think about this the next time you want to make fun of someone because of their physical appearance.
