Three years ago we sold our home, moved into a 32’ camper trailer in order to be able to buy more land and have our dream homestead. Building a home affordably meant having to learn mostly all of the trades along the way including HVAC! This week I’m installing my ERV unit. ERV is similar to HRV. Basically, it’s an air recovery unit. It takes out stale air and brings in fresh air. And HRV unit transfers heat whereas an ERV unit transfers heat and moisture.
I installed the ERV unit on the wall and the in line duct heater to keep the supply warm in the winter. And then I went onto the daunting task of insulating my ducts in the attic. This was one of my most grave mistakes and I truly paid the price for it. It took so long to insulate the ducting so I’m showing you what not to do!

Good morning 🌅, Biata , good idea to put blocks on the wall, but make up some tapered wedges, put them in point towards each other then can drive the wedges against each other and lift your panel up to get it aligned or tight to the ceiling or wherever you need to put it, and it’s a good idea to make yourself some props, obviously have them close to you when you go to install your panel work or a cupboard, et cetera, your garden now I’ll be coming to look great, reaping the effort, stay safe. Keep up the great work., France.

Good morning, B 👍☀️. Biata the Builder. I saw/heard you say two key things in this one; "DIY is cheaper" (than calling in the pro) - it is, but by no means easier! "I need to unwind" ... something like that. YES, that is the sound of you taking care of yourself 👍👍👍. There is no protection from getting ill advice, or from not knowing, which advice is good or bad. Insulating your ducting got unnecessary hard. Congratulations on getting there! Take care. Enjoy the rain, the vegetables and fruits from your garden and time with your family.

Some days don't go as well as you hope. Think of it as a learning experience and sometimes it's worth the time spent to learn and grow. Keep your brain worikg and it will get done. I know at times it can be flustrating but try to think of the positive and that will help you to keep moving ahead. Your a brave person and we are all prowd of you for atempting to do any of this. Most people have worked in the trade to learn from others before atempting this on there own. So the slow days (when you feel you could have done more) is a small portion of what most of us have spent learning. Keep on keeping on and it will get done in time. Also its not a bad thing to have someone that's experiance to help in the hard jobs so the pace is quicker. I would get tired, loose my patence, and probally give up if I had to do it all. Your smart, have a good attitude to push on and are acomplishing alot. Think of this when oyur overwheled and give yourself a break.

Biata, every home built in Florida in the past 30-40 years uses that same soft flexible ductwork in the attic. Where the duct work terminates there is a mastic that must be applied to the joints to seal the joint and make them air tight.
@SimpleLivingwithBiata

I was just convinced to use solid as the plastic can break down more easily in the colder climates! And our mice issues in Canada They apparently climb into the warm ducts if they get into the attic

Biata, I’ve been watching your videos and you are a DYI person. I have a wood boiler with infloor heat. But I strongly recommend you to use the boiler for forced air as well. The heating of the floors is fine but when here in Canada one day it can be -5 but that night it would be -40. With forced air it will help with your heating solution. We are slab on grade as well in Saskatchewan all of our ducting is in the attic. Of course it’s all insulated. Trust me it’s worth having it. Our forced air is tied to the boiler as well.

Hi Biata, Love your videos and your never ending drive! You need to get yourself a small sledge or ball peen hammer for those anchors. Im amazed at the amount of extra stuff thats required in Canada then to Australia, obviously the difference in climates causes that, I mean we insulate our ceiling and we put a rap around the timberwood externally, but thats the end of it, rarely would someone insulate the walls though it is done, in my state we use double brick construction and we now use a sheet insulation in between, as buildings now need a 7 Star Rating, other states build Brick Veneer houses, so timber frame with brick wall external, anyway, you are getting your house another step closer to completion, its fun watching, lol.

Strange that you have to add an inline heater. The HRV/ERV does heat exchange with outgoing air, so the need to heat the air diminishes. Over here the HRV/ERG comes with the heater built in for those very cold days, so it's just one unit to wire up and take care of.
@SimpleLivingwithBiata
@SimpleLivingwithBiata День назад
Yes yes! So the HRV/ERV both exchange heat BUT when it’s -30 here it can’t exchange it enough I guess? But it has a sensor so it will exchange as much heat as it can and the duct heater is after that :)
@upnorthandpersonal
@upnorthandpersonal День назад
@@SimpleLivingwithBiata It gets -30 here too, but what I was trying to say is that the duct heater is something that is integrated into the HRV/ERV here. I've never seen a stand-alone duct heater.

Except for your mechanical room, should have put a sheet of Sheetrock on the ceiling. Cuz it gonna suck putting up n securing it should been before u put up your RV system. I am wondering if you are going to do the drywall yourself, or hire a crew to do it.? I am sure you know hanging the drywall is a 2 person job. taping the seams is not bad, but sanding the finished result is so dusty that you need respirators and I use old clothes so when I am done I just throw the clothes in the trash. The clothes retain so much dust it can clog up the drain in a automatic washer. As for the rest of the project you are turning into a real pro. Sometimes instruction manuals are the most confusing and useless things ever invented. I don't have all that fancy rigging in my house, just windows. It's simpler that way. You'll get it. You're doing all new things that you've never done before. I still remember the girl who was scared to get on the roof and now that's ancient history. Remember, there are some people out there who won't do anything because of the excuse "I don't know how" and they won't attempt to learn.

Haha right?! Most useless manuals! And thank you so much. I wish we could get away with no air recovery unit but it’s code now haha! So fun!

@@SimpleLivingwithBiata I just installed a water heater BY THE INSTRUCTIONS and then got told by the gas guys when they came to fill the tank that it's not up to code because it's considered a "boiler". So it has to be done by boiler code. Ain't that stupid! A water heater isn't a boiler! I feel you!

Hello Biata. Hammer We have spoken before. Don't allow the 'men' to sell you on a REAL hammer. Yes, definitely there are different hammers,,, but 70 years has taught me, ALL hammers can drive a 16d nail in the same number of blows. Take a 24 oz framing hammer, I can match the speed and numvber of blows with my 20 curved claw, wooden handle,, OR my 16 oz. curved claw wooden handle. It has more to do with body weight and arm length AND technique than any weight or size factors. I always use a wooden handle. The fiberglass and steel handles hit back at my hand every time I strike a nail/ Wood does not hit you back. Limitations? Do not use a wooden handle hammer to pull nails. It will give you practice at replacing the handle. I use a long handle,, a 16 inch "engineers" handle. Biata, I have watched,, you already know about a 'dead blow' That is allowing the hammer to strike at full force. I've watched you split wood, you already know how to do it. So,,, pick the hammer that feels the best for the job YOU are doing, your body weight, your arm.

Haha that’s fair! Thank you! It was just a much nicer and lighter feeling hammer!

@@SimpleLivingwithBiata Remember the blocks to hold the plywood up.. Same exact technique for hanging the upper cabinets in the kitchen (54 inches off the floor,, exactly level, screw in a ledger board (temporary) kitchen uppers can sit on that as you fasten them to the wall. Do that before you install lowers

Biata you could have used 6” 90° elbows on top of your air box that would have made it easier. Also don’t forget to foam where the flex went thru the wall … Also you could have used insulted flex in your cold space instead of hard pipe …aA tip for you Biata where you slipped the 4” 90° elbow on at the elbow should have been crimped not the pipe … continuous flow without leaks is what code states … Keep up the good work girl you have this BOSS …. 🇺🇸👊🏼👊🏼🔨🪚

I was told. It to use elbows or any metal on the unit by the HVAC company I’ve been in contact with due to rattling! I also tried putting elbows way back and realized there was absolutely no room to bring things the way they needed to go! It was tricky but it worked haha

@@SimpleLivingwithBiata ok it maybe different in Canada than the States but elbows can be rotated to accommodate other angles and can be wrapped with insulation as far as rattling I have never heard one rattle that was installed correctly… Stay Safe 👊🏼👊🏼🙋🏼‍♂️
