the trick is to apply the background paint to the taped area before applying the 2nd layer. The first layer of background paint seeps into the tape line, sealing it. So in this case you would need to: 1. Paint the canvas white, let dry. 2. Add tape. 3. Paint the lines in white, let dry. 4. Paint the lines in black, let dry. 5. Remove the tape. After applying the 2nd layer (the color you want your line to be) you peel off the tape and you're left with perfect lines of black (or whatever). This is because of the background color (white) has run into the paint lines and created a seal that prevents any black to come through. So if we look at the big red cube, you will paint the tape edge with black before going over with red, because you have a black background in that case. That's how it's done and it's really simple to create perfect lines using tape. I really have no idea why that original piece is so overpriced/hyped. It's basic stuff we learn in the first month of painter's trade school. Another thing we learn there is that if you're painting over a dark or colorful background with yellow paint, it's best to paint it white - then yellow, less paint is wasted. Anyway, good luck!

Amazing comment, thanks!! Did not expect to find gold in the comment section of a 3k view video 😁

Tip: use white first, then the color you want. Like this, when you take off the tape, you will have straight lines

Note: Look at the original painting. Mondrian did not extend the short black line at the bottom right all the way to the edge of the canvas. To drive the viewer mad :-)
