Do you think wood movement will be a problem?

Possibly, but I would imagine them being minor problems and easily fixable.

Using the mortiser to open up the skirt for the drawer boxes was INSPIRED! Great idea that I will use immediately! Was time the thing that pushed you to use the jig saw to finish the cuts?
@_Shopfix
@_Shopfix 29 дней назад
I think because they were so short I felt comfortable just finishing them with the jigsaw. And yes it would have taken more time to adjust the mortiser to cut the other way like that.

Question: Did you let the pine material dry or not get it from a big box store? Just wondering as I have shyed away from building with "construction" grade lumber due to warping, etc. over time. Great video and love your channel and look forward to more build videos!
@_Shopfix
@_Shopfix 16 дней назад
I got the pine lumber from Home Depot it was already very dry to begin with and had some extra time in the shop to dry some more. It’s not the easiest wood to work with, hardwoods are much easier. However, the cost savings are unmatched. In most instances I would shy away from it as well but the farmhouse style plays into it because you’re trying to achieve a rustic look. So pine for a rustic style I’d say worth it, other than that I’d prefer using a hardwood!

Make sure you calculate your time, too. Profit comes after you pay yourself.

Very true, overtime I’ll get better at pricing. I think the drawers added more value to the build then reflected in the price. They also ate up a lot of time as you mentioned.
@JerkDogJ

@_Shopfix you're pricing sounds fine, IMO. I just want to make sure you account for the value of your time, it's your most valuable asset. Great work.

I agree that top is going to split unless the wood itself has been properly dried, which if you bought from big box store it’s probably not and then you milled it to exposed new material. With any luck that house is climate controlled if not you’ll be getting a call. Most likely the table top broke the glue from the base or the top shrunk significantly do to water loss. Again shrinkage will only happen if it’s climate controlled. If you bought and built it outside and their house isn’t controlled then you should only have to deal with it breaking the glue then just go buy figure 8 hold downs to remount the top to base. Good build and good video quality but you definitely have to tighten up your wood knowledge.

Good thoughts, we shall see how it holds up. I imagine it will be pretty stable, some movement is expected but I don’t foresee any issues that would ruin the table. Might just need some tlc later down the road or maybe it will just add to the rustic character.

@thehawkc 29 дней назад
Look, you are great at being precise. But gluing the top of the table to the base ? 45 miters for drawers? But at least you are putting it out there.
@_Shopfix
@_Shopfix 29 дней назад
I’ve definitely got some push back on that, in my opinion it should make the table much stronger.

How long did it take to build?
@_Shopfix
@_Shopfix 27 дней назад
I didn’t time it and since I’m recording, it takes a bit longer. If I had to guess this is a solid 30-40 hour build not accounting for down time for drying and such.

Nice piece of work, William. But, as for the client, I can't understand the fool, who wants to pay a bundle, for a brand new piece of furniture, then have someone beat the crap out of it, so it looks "authentic". The piece they are trying to replicate did Not look like that, when it was new and the family who bought it was proud to have that nice new piece in their home. If you want an old piece of garbage, buy an old piece of garbage and throw some paint on it. For what some idiots want, they wouldn't even have to sand it. Of course, these are people with Money, who did not grow up in an environment full of old, beat up, furniture. If they did, they would Not want it now.😁✌🖖

I totally get what you’re saying, that kind of style isn’t for everyone! One could certainly try to find a table that matches what they wanted and paint it however that could be difficult depending on how you want the table to look. I think another great look for this design would have been to leave the top of the bench and the top of the table wood tone and just paint the bottoms. There’s so many different looks and ways to go about it, at the end of the day it’s simply personal preference.

Agreed. Tops have to float, figure 8 best. Trouble spots abound, looks like 2 by material, which is too too heavy even for stout fine furniture. And why in the world would you use mortise and tenon combined with std pocket holes? On wood movement, did you also finish the underside of the top same as the top? No, couldn’t have cause it’s glued to the base; crap. You Sir need formal training
@_Shopfix
@_Shopfix Месяц назад
Figure 8 hardware would have worked great if I had glued up the top separately. If I was working with hardwood I would have opted for something like that instead. I’d never want to nail a hardwood top to its base. I know ironic to use pocket holes in mortise and tenon joints but I needed a way to fasten them without glue so they could be removed, what would you recommend? The undersides are all finished the same as the top as show in the video.

Way under priced. Neighborhood of 4-5 times material costs
@_Shopfix
@_Shopfix Месяц назад
Agreed, I think there’s more money to be made with this design. I think 5x the material cost for this design would be a good sweet spot to shoot for next time.
