4 years ago I made a game on Scratch. Now I'm remaking that game in Godot and discussing some of the challenges I faced on the way. That and some funnies in today's indie devlog.

What you said about deadlines is so relatable. A lot of people (including me) set ridiculously unreleastic deadlines. I think the reason we end up in that situation is because most of us are setting a deadline to finish doing something that we don't 100% completely know about it. And we end up not accounting for the time it takes to learn the things we overlooked. So, if someone wants to dab in 3D animation to make a 5 minutes movie, they will give themselves probably a month to learn and finish making that animation. Which is completely unreleastic. How were you able to estimate it is going to take a month if you know nothing about 3D and are just starting out? There is a quote I read somewhere but it summarizes most of us: "We overestimate what we can achieve in a day, and underestimate what we can achieve in a year" Wanted to let you know that I got this video on my recommendation, so the algorithm is working out for you, fellow game dev :)

Your talk about deadlines and procrastination is something I'm very familiar with. I don't know if you ever heard of the "eat the frog" technique. Basically, you start by doing the hardest / most annoying task. You force yourself to do that first instead of pushing further toward the deadline. Obviously, it's not always easy to do that first as some things might be more important to do first, but it can help a bit.

I decided to check out the original game, expecting it to have tons of plays because "this is a youtube video it must be popular." But to my surprise it only had like 6 views, which is crazy because your content is just as good as other indie developers. I enjoyed this video and I subscribed! Good luck on your game dev journey. P.S. The flames look really good in the new game.

I am currently working on a job making an educational game in where I have a lot of freedom in the project and deadline, but that allows my mind to set to many goals or procrastinate too much. Experiments like these are great to see and do as you learn how to go about deadlines in a safe environment. great video!

I've read when coming up with a timeline for gamedev. Take how long you you think it will take, then double that time. Then add another 50% to that time and you'll get pretty close to the actual time it will take to complete something :P

I used to think motivation comes from inspiration, and that’s partly true for sure, but what do u so when your not inspired? Real motivation comes from discipline, stewardship of resources, and most importantly, a grander goal or purpose that you dedicate your life to. Once we discover our “why” we do what we do, we begin to just do and stop asking or wondering why we’re incapable. I’m Still learning everyday what it means to grow into purpose though, hope this helps or gives you something to think about! Awesome video.

Here if you have problems with deadlines, imma tell you a trick. How long is the task going to take? You got that? Okay, double it This should work, if it doesn’t, I suggest changing it accordingly while you are NOT working on a project, you need an outside view on these things while planning.

Sounds a lot like adhd (personal experience). But you get stuff done! That's the improtant part. Your mistake isn't making or breaking deadlines, your mistake is simply setting the entire project to one deadline. If instead you did what other good game devs do, what you're supposed to do and especially what adhders need to do - set reasonably tight deadlines for the tiniest steps of your project, you wouldn't be hating yourself for failing as much. Example: I have two hours, I will get one asset done. Before the end of the day (set a clear end or you'll be sitting there until morning), I'll have this mechanic working. Especially for me, who has been learning godot on my own time and very slowly, I've spent the last 5 years doing 5 projects at once and not even getting 10% with any of them, but I've learned so much in the meantime, especially blender and problemsolving. It doesn't matter if it takes you years, you're learning. School doesn't take a few days to finish either. Small goals, step by step. Focus on the positive: You actually get Stuff Done

@monstereugene

IDK i'm a kid doing this purely for my own will and passion so my experience is limited... I don't(never) set a deadline. instead I write what I want to make and work on it as I want to. This probably isn't the most efficient way but I never get stuck in that weird state others seem to get stuck in. If a quality product is my goal it always takes longer then expected but if a mvp is what I'm after it usually takes way less time then I expect it to. (although I enjoy the programing and design 50 times more than I like art/ polish) go ahead try it
@LazyAlarm
@LazyAlarm 2 года назад
I don't set deadlines if I know it's a project I'll continually have interest in, but often that's not the case. Sometimes I need a good deadline to get some actual progress done.
@monstereugene
@monstereugene 2 года назад
@@LazyAlarm That's kind of what i'm saying if it's something you actually want to work on you probably won't need many deadlines. If it's something "I" don't want to do but need to do it I just do something interesting while I half work. Then I finish it strong and reward myself for completing unwanted task. You may just want not start/ finish a project if you find yourself setting such aggressive deadlines

This is one of the most relatable videos I’ve seen in a long time. I just did a very similar thing for a video I was going to post yesterday. Now I don’t think I’m going to get to post it until the week after next. In my case the extra time came from fixing my own mistakes that I made instead of miss judging the amount of time it would take to do it. Really enjoyed your video though. My past self could probably beat me in a fight. I was a martial arts instructor with a six pack. Now I am an artist with a gut.

@highlyillegalpigeon
@highlyillegalpigeon 2 года назад
This video is great, especially because the problem you describe isn't just limited to game or software development, it's everywhere and getting worse and worse. Without context and some root purpose, a frame of reference, you cannot create anything because what does it relate to? How is it's value determined? I believe this is also why so much "art" is just worthless because it doesn't mean anything. People forgot why they wanted to create these cultural beacons of deeper meaning in the first place. The philosophical findings that are portrayed in your videos are what makes them so interesting, I can feel that you want to understand the issue at hand and are not just looking for some quick attention.
