So glad you got more Canadians. I hope they stay safe, and you end up with at least 1 nest this year. The "wild" ducks are amazing. I also hope you get a few more pigeon trapping videos this year! Also, are you putting the turtle trap out this year? So many videos to update 😂.

Regarding the subspecies of canadas you have there, they are a smaller species, and look a bit to my eye like cackling canadas. Both the American Ornithological Union and the British Ornithological Union recently reclassified canada geese into two species: Branta canadensis (canada goose) and Branta hutchinsii (cackling geese). They look a lot alike except that the cacklers are smaller, and have a higher pitched voice. The genetic differences are where the largest difference is. The DNA of the four cackling species are similar to each other, and the DNA of the canada species are similar, but the DNA of the cacklers as a whole and the canadas as a whole, are very different. In spite of how much alike they look, there is as much difference in those two populations as there is between canadas and nene geese. That means they split a long time ago; perhaps as early as the last ice age. That would make sense, since there would at that time have been a physical barrier present which would have separated species west of the Rocky Mountains from those East of the Rockies. These days cacklers and canadas share the same migration and nesting grounds except on the east coast where only canadas are present. As for what yours are, I'm pretty sure that because of their small size tjey are cacklers. The breasts are very light coloured, and there is only one cackler which has that light coloured breast, and that is B. h. hutchinsii (Hutchen's cackling goose). It is the nominative of the cacklers, and also the largest of them. They do migrate through Kansas, but their nesting grounds are far to the north around the arctic circle and points north of that. In recent years there have been a few pairs which have been spotted nesting in the Dakotas and in the Nebraska sandhills. None have been reported nesting as far south as Kansas. The sightings of them nesting from northern Nebraska up through the Dakotas are extremely rare, and usually don't number more than in the low single digits, and many years none are reported. They are definitely still a bird of the far north. When they do nest south of the Canadian border, they don't return year after year like they commonly do up near the arctic circle, or like the other Branta do everywhere else. Both canada geese and cackling canada geese will dump eggs now and then on their way to their nesting grounds. You don't see the eggs often because they get snatched up pretty quickly by egg loving critters of which there are too many to name. Suffice it to say that humans aren't the only ones who like eggs for breakfast. I've heard a lot of people say that these dumped eggs are usually not fertile. I'm also guessing that since your canadas (cacklers) are probably new to the pen that you have them in that they have no interest in setting a clutch yet, even if they are fertile. If you provide them with some nesting material, once they settle down a bit, they might nest, though as you pointed out, it's getting late in the year for that. Still, it isn't late up in the arctic circle, and if their internal clock is set to arctic circle time, there's still a chance that they may yet nest. In future seasons you may want to separate them early in the year (probably in March) until the goslings hatch. They tend to be very territorial at nesting time, but after the babies hatch, all that goes away, and parents will often leave their babies for a short while with a "babysitter" goose and gander. They always come back and pick up the kids, but later they might take a turn at babysitting. In the wild I've seen groups of up to 27 babies in one group, and some ornithologists have records of over 50 of various ages in one group. So privacy while nesting, but togetherness after that. If you want to know if those goose eggs you put under your goose are viable or not, wait for a couple of weeks after you put them under her and then candle them. You might want to candle a good number of her other eggs too in order to determine how far along they are. It would be sad to have a small number of eggs hatch, then to have her abandon the rest because she has a small number which are hatched and need to eat. I don't know if you have an incubator or not, but if you do, and if it's not full, you might want to take some of the least developed, and maybe the two goose eggs too, and put them in the incubator. If you can get all the eggs which are under her to hatch out all at the same time, then you won't lose any (or at least as many) as you would if there are some which are several days/weeks behind due to a later laying date. If you're finding a lot more eggs under that goose than were there when she started to set, it's likely that someone is dumping eggs while she's off the nest to feed and unload the she's been holding onto since the last time she was off the nest. It would be a good idea to mark all the eggs under her with a pencil so you can tell any new ones apart from the ones she's been setting. If she ends up with too many eggs, she may start kicking some out, or some may get buried below the others, where they will die and rot. Rotting eggs under good ones is the most common reason for nest abandonment in waterfowl. Those rotting eggs can also cause your good eggs to get a bacterial infection and then they will also die. I hope that some of this information will be useful, or at least interesting. Best of luck not only with your canadas, but also with all your birds and other stock. Looks like you've got a good setup there, and you might convince me that you're a redneck if you try a little harder, but I need no convincing regarding your good ol' Yankee ingenuity. Thing is, if you get things sparkly new and purpose built, it's going to get rusty and covered with dirt, so why not give it a head start? Do what works and you can save a lot of money. That last bit may be the stupidest and most obvious piece of advice you ever get from anyone, but the intentions are good. I'll be rootin' for ya though.

@Chompchompyerded Год назад
It's illegal to own canada geese. They are covered not only by Federal law, but also treaty with Canada and Mexico. Therefore, you might not want to advertise it too much that you've got them. It's also not legal to own their eggs or their goslings, which kinda stinks, since wildlife officers all over the country are on the lookout for nests in city parks, and when they find them, they addle the eggs and destroy the nest. Seems to me that if it's okay to destroy the nest and eggs, is should be okay just to let people take them and raise them. The ones which are hanging out in cities and in areas where they were released by state game departments aren't migrating, and really shouldn't be considered migratory waterfowl, and since numbers are rebounding well from where they were a couple of decades ago it seems like a little renegotiating of the treaty and the laws would be in order. But I don't make the laws, so as a matter of advice, it would probably be best to keep it on the QT. I would hate to see you in trouble for something we'd all love to have/do, especially since it's not harming anyone including populations of wild canada geese at this point. That all said, I'd give an arm and a leg for four fertile canada goose eggs. I'm good and envious of your four birds, but I won't let myself covet them too much. Gotta practice self restraint. Which is incredibly hard to do when it comes to waterfowl. For me at least.
