I have submitted a number of close pass incidents to West Midlands Police and they have always got back to me within 2 working days with an outcome. It’s usually a driver awareness course but can be fine/points. Hats off to WMP!

Great to see, I’m a driving instructor and I also run speed awareness and also run SCD courses (safe and considerate driving courses) for the police. I don’t have any evidence to back this up except my own anecdotes, over the last few months I have noticed a significant increase in clients attending a course due to close passes on cyclists. So keep submitting 👍

I had a similar experience where a guy on a motorbike decided to deliberately swerve towards me while passing to try and startle me for literally no reason other than just because. I sent the footage from my Varia to the police expecting nothing much to come from it, I got a phone call about three weeks later saying they were prosecuting him for dangerous driving. It is refreshing to know that things are actually getting done about it.

In a 30mph area, lamp posts are a set distance apart (ie: always the same measured distance apart), therefore the police will know that any ICE vehicle (car, motorbike, van, lorry etc) travelling at 30mph it will take an exact amount of time in seconds to travel from one lamp post to the next. Any time quicker than that precise time means the driver is exceeding the speed limit and speeding.

they can figure out his speed NOT using your Garmin, all they need is time and two reference points such as lines on the road, lamp post which will give them distance. A high school physics kid could figure it out from the video. Good for you, now GARMIN just needs to record the distance drivers give you when passing.

Okay, as I think about a little more, I think my concern is the lack of notification to drivers that you are an active police informant. Here in the States, large retail stores have private security vehicles drive up and down the lanes of parking lots and each vehicle is marked CAMERA VEHICLE on all sides so people know, rut row, we are on camera. And it works to run away parties in the lot and various activities not conducive to a peaceful parking lot for customers. And just yesterday, I was driving my '86 Pontiac on two-lanes roads, overtook a cyclist with plenty of room, and frankly, not sure if I was driving the exact, precise speed limit. and man, I'd be shocked if that rider reported me for anything, it was a simple overtake on a quiet summer morn.

The only reason the police acted on this is because they were so far over the speed limit that it wouldn't be remotely arguable that they weren't. To be able to prosecute people for speeding, you have to be able to show that they were speeding. Thats easy enough on a camera if someone is breaking it by 100%. If that car was doing 40 I can almost guarantee that they wouldn't be able to prosecute. We have to clearly mark our static speed cameras in the UK but there is no requirement to tell anyone you are filming when driving or cycling.

Here in the US, I'd never ride a bike unless it was on an isolated bike path. I'm a very good driver with a spotless record and there are still a handful of times I've narrowly avoided cyclists. Since most drivers are worse than me, I assume cyclists have near-death experiences on a daily basis. As a motorist, not seeing a cyclist is one of my biggest fears. Car drivers constantly must endanger themselves, crossing double lines, to overtake cyclists on roads travelling 20mph under the limit. I wish there could be infrastructure support so both cyclists and motorists could travel without impeding each other

Driving without due care and attention is anything but a victimless crime and where possibile it is perfectly appropriate to report offences to the competent authorities. If a person was walking about town waving around a firearm for example, it would make sense to call the police whether or not he or she was threating you with it specifically. From the discussion the incident seems pretty clear given the speed he was claimed to have been going and it wasn't an accident to be driving in that way.

I agree, and we do live in a small world. Not a stretch to think a driver who got reported to the police can recall exactly when and where it was done and perhaps wait to retaliate on another day. People can truly be mean and nasty and vindictive and, thankfully, we have police to do police work, not an easy job and much respect to them. And if bike riders want to take on that job, well, be careful, please. And I say that as one who, years ago, went through the process on my job of reporting my concern over the mental well-being of a colleague who freakin' WENT OFF on management in a verbal rant. And I did what we were asked to do, I reported it by filling out a form and putting my name on it. And management talked with him, and he apologize to me, not necessary, but yeah, I paid for it through various bad vibrations from him and his buds after that, and I wanted none of that, of course, but it did come back to bite me for being a good guy, I was truly concerned about him. And again, I simply think police work should be done by police. Let's get the UK to hire bike-mounted riders with cameras.

Why wouldn't they do something? They are literally doing zero work to get a conviction. I'm not saying they shouldn't be convicting (because 75mph in a 30 is stupidly dangerous), but it would be nice if they actually did some work on crimes where people were actually harmed or had something stolen rather than just creating a police report and not tracking down the criminals.
@paulgrimshaw8334
@paulgrimshaw8334 Месяц назад
@@keyyyyyyyyyify That’s not true. First of all, the police can issue a charge. It is up to the courts to convict or rule on a disputed citation. If the matter proceeds to court, the attending officer needs to appear. Half the time they don’t. So the accused walks. If the accused is charged on the basis of an un calibrated image or video taken by a citizen, then having the citation overturned is as easy as asking for expert testimony to verify that the image hasn’t been tampered with, is optically correct, accurate etc. The key legal principles are: (1) presumption of innocence and (2) nothing is self apparent. It doesn’t take Johnny Cochran (OJ Simpson’s defence lawyer) to obtain an acquittal on these terms. Doesn’t even take a lawyer. If you want to know why crimes where people are harmed are not ruthlessly investigated… look no further than statistics on the number of officers assigned to traffic duty handing out tickets to generate revenue for the state. The officer pool is the officer pool and the number of people making speed complaints is greater than those reporting break and enters by a factor of… 100. If you want to know why so many serious criminals walk due to judicial delay, look no further than the fact that traffic tickets make up 90% of a court’s docket. Since the state makes money from fines and loses money when incarcerating criminals, I’ll let you figure out a key issue underpinning the math.

Ironically, the cyclist provided 10 minutes of footage in which their riding standard was atrocious, which the police officer did comment on. It did piss me off that I went through all that for no reason. I'd be careful what you wish for, as I live in a very popular cycling area and if I had a dash cam, I could report cyclists often for aggressive and inconsiderate road behaviour. If you didnt like Jimmy before, you probably like him less now. Let the police do their job and dont help them unless someone actually causes you harm. Youve no idea why the person was speeding, they could have been on their way to hospital in an emergency, yes its unlikely but you dont know and you shouldnt be the judge. Its only a matter of time before car drivers get their way and bikes have to have number plates and insurance too, if you carry on informing it will make cyclist even more hated.

In the week the 3 girls in Southport were murdered, an average of 35 people died on the roads, mostly due to careless or incompetent driving. Does that put things in perspective for you?

I think it's fair. Too bad there's no way to identify cyclists that cross reds, exceed speed or ride on the sidealk.

Too little benefit to resources involved ratio. What improvement and at what would it precisely achieve? 350 deaths, 150k injured in accidents involving a car. 1 dead and 450 injured in accidents involving cyclists. How often do you see temporary road closures due to accidents caused by a cyclist? I have never seen one, but see road closures due to car accidents at least once per fortnight.

@@82vitt All of a sudden when the spotlight is towards yall..... First off all you guys are using a vehicle on the road so there's really no discussion to be had about, at the very least, identification. Once cyclists are indentified the same resources that catch cars and motorbikes wrongdoings can be used towards cyclists, that's no excuse. If we are going to throw around numbers then lets start collecting data on how many of those accidents involving cyclists and cars are "self inflicted" to say the least. At the moment the narrative is always angel cyclists trying to save the world while being hunt down by cars so lets investigate and shine light.

I dunno, turning cyclists into unpaid deputies seems wrong to me. The driver gave you room and was obviously paying attention and being cautious of you and was it a stretch of country road where drivers tend to up the pace. I'm just not a fan of using bike tech for work as volunteer bike-mounted police officers, tho' I'm all for police enforcement of traffic laws and the like, not an anti-police person by any means, just that I am not ia paid patrolman one and I don't want my fellow citizens, aka motor car drivers, to think I'm snitching on them for bonus points. Let's get Cade Media on the police payroll and call it even. 😀

But, by this logic, if you report someone for stealing something at a neighbour’s house, for example, would that be becoming a police informant?

@@BrenGunning Fair point. Whatever you see going on at your neighbours house thru binoculars and night vision goggles is fine. LOL

@@BrenGunning Respectfully, I'd say no because everyone knows you cross a line when you enter someone's private space, be it house or vehicle or whatever. It is a clearly defined law, not always enforced, certainly, but still a recognized right of citizens to abide in peace in their place. And again, if we riders are going to be reporting vehicle drivers, fine, make it official and maybe get the special tool for it, the Garmin Cop Cam. 😀

30mph speed limits in the UK are basically never used anywhere but residential areas. Someone doing 70+ in a 30 is fantastically dangerous and they should instantly lose their license. The speed limit is there for a reason. He can give the cyclist as much room as he wants flying past at 70+, hes going to kill someone who pulls out in front of him or steps off the pavement in front of him. There isn't a chance he won't crash. This idea of snitching is just bizarre and belongs in bollocks gang culture. This isn't someone doing 35 in a 30. This isn't someone parking where they shouldn't or bending the rules a little. Hundreds of people die each year in the UK because people drive like knobs. I bet every single person who talks about snitching would feel differently if their family member was killed by a twat doing over twice the speed limit in a residential area.
