I rescued this bean slicer from my Nana's cupboard.
It was originally made in England by a company called Sponge.

I came here to find out how to restore my mother’s old bean slicer. Both the video and the restored bean slicer are a work of art! I love all the sounds. Mine does not have separate blades. The cutting surface is just formed out of the disc that is turned by the handle. It still works perfectly but is quite rusty and the finish is very patchy. It really deserves some TLC!

My mother used this particular piece of equipment almost every week in the summer when the beans were growing it’s called a Sponger bean slicer every Sunday for dinner.👍

We used such a slicer when i was young, to cut beans and store them with salt in a big pott in the cellar. In winter, sometimes my mother took enough for a meal, cleard the beans in water and cooked them. It is a kind of storage, like German Sauerkraut.

Interesting! I was wondering how this would have been used- do you remember the name of the dish (if it was anything other than salted green beans) made with these sliced salted beans?

@@christineb8148 Es gab keinen speziellen Namen. Je nach Region Schnibbel öder Schnittbohnen. Die konnte man auch unterschiedlich zubereiten. Als Zutat im Eintopf oder wie Milchbohnen.

A man walks into the doctor's office with green beans hanging out of his nose and a carrot in each ear . . . He says, ''I've been losing weight doctor, what do you think could be wrong with me?'' The doctor looks at him, scratches his chin for a minute, and says, "Hmmm, I don't think you're eating right" 🤣
