In this video, I have a go at restoring the CV axles on the Subaru. It started off well, but it started to get quite difficult towards the end. Should I have even bothered?

Hi Jake, another great video, I’ve got my drive shafts to do next so good to see how they come apart! Shame about the bearing cage cracking, I’ll try not to make the same mistake, might just leave it together and clean it up to inspect it as best I can as you suggest, thanks for being the guinea pig lol! In terms of the paint chipping I’d have probably just sprayed the Jenolite on after you had cleaned them up rather than the other stuff first perhaps, it is after all designed to go straight over rust (not that I would mind). Might be worth trialing on a test piece perhaps?

Hi rich, I’m not dwelling too much on all these mistakes I keep making, it’s all apart of the learning process I suppose. Just make note of how they come out and I think you’ll be alright. I don’t know why the ball bearings are so difficult to get back in, but maybe it’s just me lol. I’ll try it out on a test piece and see what happens. Obviously more layers doesn’t necessarily mean better durability though!

They'll look sound when they're on. I spray for a living and everything i do ends in disaster don't worry about it. God loves a tryer and hopes all we've got

Yeah I’m hoping they’ll just blend in with everything. I probably should have gone down the route of spraying with a compressor though

Another excellent video! As far as adhesion/paint question goes I can only give you my experience and not professional painters advice. Which paint is chipping? The spray paint layer or both? It’s hard to tell from the video but did you do any further prep before the red oxide primer? I’m not sure if the rust treatment you’re using has any recommended steps but I’d say it absolutely couldn’t hurt to double check for loose areas to knock off once more then wiping down with a dissolving cleaner before primer. As far as primer to paint it’s largely just the same. Clean surface deal once more. This time we only add the possible complication of dissimilar paints. It may be wise to research the compatibility of the two paints you’re planning on using with each other. Excited for the welding bit and love to see the progress! I currently have 1,000 miles separately me from my project forester I’ve spoken about. Videos like these help “scratch the itch” so to speak in the meantime. Much appreciated, cheers

I forgot to mention; Frustrating as the axles may be it’s nice knowing they’re cleaned and greased for the best longevity currently possible. Something I’m really feeling more inclined to do on my two spilt front axle boots….even if it looks like hell it’s cheaper than a new axle and likely better quality than a parts store piece

While messing with the clips for the boots, all three layers started to chip on the middle section. Perhaps that suggests one of them isn’t compatible? I need to work on making sure I capture everything I’m doing for the videos, but I throughly degreased the area prior to using the rust treatment as suggested by the bottle. I had hoped to show them fully complete by the end of the video, but it didn’t quite go to plan. Yeah I remember you mentioning you had upper shock issues. I still need to get that cavity wax you suggested too.

Yeah the axles soon add up if you need multiple too. As you say, it’s good to know there’s fresh grease in there, just hope they last a few extra thousand miles when the cars back on the road
