I was allowed to try the new reformulated Citadel Shade paints before anyone else, and in this review, I'll share my thoughts about them. Are they really an improvement or just the same product in a smaller (18 ml) pot for the same price? I also introduce the seven new Shade paints (Mortarion Grime, Tyran Blue, Berserker Bloodshade, Targor Rageshade, Poxwalker, Kroak Green, Soulblight Grey) and compare the old versions of the washes with their new updated versions.

Here is a sticky FAQ post, answering the most pressing questions. 1. Where can I download the comparison sheet? Check out my website Tale of Painters: taleofpainters.com/2022/06/review-new-formula-citadel-shade-paints-better-or-just-smaller-pots/ 2. Will the finish of the new formula washes be different? Yeah, while the pigments that provide the washes their colour hasn't changed, the acrylic medium has, so there is less staining/tinting with these new washes. They also still dry matt - though my Berserker Bloodshade, Drakenhof Nightshade, Coelia Greenshade, Agrax Earthshade and Targor Rageshade leaned a bit to the satin side. Might be batch to batch thing though. 3. The new washes are too expensive for me! Are there any alternatives? The Army Painter also do a range of washes which are pretty great and the next best thing IMO. And they come in 18 ml dropper bottles for half the price of the new Citadel Shades. Check them out here: geni.us/warpaints 4. When will these be released? I don't know yet, but they can't be far off. A few weeks max. I'll update this post accordingly. 5. What will happen with the gloss Shades? Unfortunately, these will be discontinued to make room for the new Shade and Contrast paints, as well as a few other Dry and Air paints. Check the "last chance to buy" section in the Painting & Modelling category on games-workshop.com to find out which colours will disappear.

well time for me to change shade brand, really don't think my two favorite washes look the same anymore. Been using both Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil to tint my models, Agrax to give an overall dirty look, like dirt, dried mud, and other dried brown filth is stuck to the armor, not just the recesses. Agrax on Kaki gives the perfect dirty look all over the mini. And from what I've seen from other creators, like Ninjon, the new Nuln Oil wont be able to darken my models the way I want to anymore, really enjoyed getting a really dark tone over the whole mini, especially over metal surfaces. AND the pots are getting smaller but still costs as much, about 6.5€ (65 SEK where I'm from), that is reason enough to abandon ship.

@@sweatilaa5325 typicly when people say GW shades are better is because they don't tint and they just shade the recesses which is what people typicly what and less tinting = better quality. Tldr know your products and brands and work to there strengths.

Have some sci-fi soldiers and was thinking of using something like that to give them a, eh, foresty look. If that makes sense? Or would an Agrax or similar be better at unifying the camouflage on them? I have a lot of products of learn the strength of it seems.
@matan8074
@matan8074 2 года назад
@@sweatilaa5325 I have not personally used army painter washes, I am just going by reputation. As for the second part I would paint camo using stripes and blobs of different colours depending on the type of camo you are trying to paint. Try looking at different historical real world camos, I would personally use dark green, yellow and blue/ brown, but that depends on what you are going for. I would the use anthrax to tie it all together and make it look like they have gotten muddy (a muddy look shoukd be more forgiving). An extra wash on the lower legs will help sell that look. Once again it depends on what you are going for. Would like to point out that camo is not something I have a lot of experience painting. I would recommend looking on RU-vid for videos of historical mini or posting the questions on r/minipainting to get a far better answer than I ever could. duncan rhodes video on painting a 1943 German Grenadier could be a good starting point.

@@stahly_taleofpainters Yeah, I do. They are different from the old GW washes though, so not a 1:1 analogue in terms of use. The way these newly formulated GW paints settle into the recesses just looks a lot like the Vallejo paints to me. I'd describe using them as glazing with thinned inks maybe. They're less opaque than a regular acrylic ink, but have similarly low surface tension. They tend to have more vibrant colors as well, so I'd say they are more useful for softening blends and tinting colors over adding quick shading to a model like the GW or AP washes.

I know you want to be sarcastic, but it's actually not true. The finish and flow properties are quite different, they used the knowledge they gained from designing the Contrast paints.

@@stahly_taleofpainters I'm pretty eager to try the new reformulated shades as soon as I finish my current bottles. I know you mentioned cryptek armourshade gloss a bit in your video but do you know if it's being reformulated as well or discontinued for good. The reason I ask is while stuff like nuln oil etc are getting reformulated they are still up on the GW website but cryptek is last chance to buy.

I heavily dislike new Nuln Oil, I prefer old darker one for dark metal/iron.

Try Dark Tone wash from The Army Painter, or black wash from Vallejo Game Color, these should have more of a tinting effect and are even cheaper. Or, if you only have access to GW paints, Basilicanum Grey should make a decent alternative.

Bro all they have done is add more medium to the wash so you getting a more diluted version of the wash and less of it in the pot😂

That's not true, I spoke to the guy who is the project leader for paint & hobby product development at GW, they're using a new medium based on their findings when designing Contrast ;)

@@stahly_taleofpainters sure bro, that’s just their excuse to make them cost more 😭 you’re just a sheep like the rest of the GW meat riders

Getting less volume and paint for the same or higher price as previous and " It is what it is"? Yeah,with statements and "reviews" like that they can continue to gauge prices and the sheep will follow!

@@stahly_taleofpainters they are not the same shade as the old gw washes or finish (been painting for old gw washes for 10 years). There tints are different esp the null oil and now all my old recipes all look different with these new washes. If i wanted to have a contrast wash, would have bought black templar contrast/paint. Going to be transition to pro acryle washes most likly

Fuuuuuu. I've seen other reviews and they seem like utter crap. It's like I need to use it twice, just to get the same results as last time. On top of that, we're getting *less* for the same price. Their washes/shades were always a go to, but nope. I'm just going to make my own with inks.

So many toxic kids and angry grandpas over here, and I thought the community was great. Sure, I get it, you're pissed at GW. That doesn't mean you're gonna behave like a piece of shit and start offending everyone who likes the new products, grow up.

You should say that to a mirror. In fact here's a taste: Sure, I get it, you're pissed at the community. That doesn't mean you're gonna behave like a piece of shit and start offending everyone who wants things that works for them to stay the same, grow up.
