You know, that's exactly what I thought this film was without having watched it. That's why, when it was re-released in Cineworld cinemas for one night to us Tesco employees, I decided to take my mother to see it. She loves them.

Iris needed to find her own strength and self reliance, Amanda needed to find her whimsy and romance. They both get what they need. I love this movie so much. Every point is perfect. I never found Jack Black or Jude Law attractive until this

My friend pointed out that "Rose ends up with Jack in this movie" and I couldn't stop laughing. Also, the restaurant scene with Iris and Miles is my favorite because it marks the point where Iris sees her exact situation from the outside looking in, gets perspective, and is fully ready to handle Jasper. 😀

Amanda needed passion, and Iris needed to find first self worth then love could fall into place. Her discovery of gumption, self worth and seeing herself as a leading lady was what she needed in order for love to find her, properly. Much like you I imagine.

I saw this movie last week when I was sick with covid, and I'm so happy I did. It's such a masterpiece in its themes of love and hope. I relate so much with Iris, being really emotional, and I spent so many years of my life hung up on someone who didn't and wouldn't ever love me, so I understand what she was going through so much. Those little bits of interest Jasper would show her just to keep her interested in him... it's such a cruel game, and I'm glad she had the strength to see past it and fight for herself and her happiness. Once she did so, she was able to find Miles, who truly loved her for who she was. Amanda and Graham had fantastic chemistry and I love all their moments, too. My favourite scene of theirs was when Graham and his daughters invited Amanda to the tent, and they were looking up at the lights and decorations. His daughters had accepted Amanda and it was beautiful to see her becoming a part of their family, too. The ending scene when everyone is together enjoying each other's company was magnificent and I was beaming and tearing up the entire time. Such an incredible movie beyond words.

In fact this was the first romantic movie I allowed myself to watch, and oh course in theaters, after my fiancee called off our engagement less than a month before we were set to be married. I wouldn't see romantic movies since I was resentful of them but with Nancy I had to see it. And honestly it made me hopeful as so many of her films do especially with Zimmer, who sadly also passed away, scoring another masterpiece.

I moved to England in 2006! And I lived less than 1 hour drive from Shere, in Surrey! Nothing could stop me from going there, and to Guildford, after seeing this fantastic film!! I popped in to the White Horse Pub! Walked the streets of this charming village, walking past the Shere’s church, up the hill to the place where Iris’s Rose Hill cottage was! What an experience! I even went there in spring, in summer, autumn and winter! While being there I found out that Shere was also a filming location for another, nice romantic comedy, The Wedding Date. I consider myself really lucky, I lived so near by...

Just re-watched it after many years. I had forgotten so much. Actually, what makes the movie for me is the old screenwriter. The time and care to develop that "tangent" elevates the whole thing. And he's such a delightful character.

I'm a 30-something male who likes a romantic comedy every once in a while, and I *adored* this movie. I thought it was ingenious how they worked in a sort of self-parody of the rom-com genre, while being fully aware of how sappy it is, but not overdoing it. I also really liked how it wasn't a perfect 'happily ever after' ending, at least for Amanda and Graham. Yes, she's staying a little while longer, but she will eventually have to go back to L.A. But the brilliant thing is, the movie gives the audience everything they need to work it out on their own. There is enough evidence to suggest that they figured things out, and were eventually married, most likely with Amanda moving to England. The scenes with Graham's daughters were heart-melting. What woman *wouldn't* want to be their stepmother, especially if their father was Jude Law?

The first time the Wife and I watched this movie, the Wife hated the movie. Now it is one of her favorite movies. She tells me she can not understand why she hated it so much. We both Love the friendship between Iris and Arthur. I was dispatched to fix a customer's telephone line near Pyramid Lake, Nevada. When I finished the elderly lady wanted to show me around her ranch to see all the owl nest with babies. She invited me to bring our children to show them the baby owls, which I came back over the weekend with the Wife and Children. I learned the ranch had the house of Clark Gable, and they used it during the filming of the movie The Misfits, with Eli Wallach. I had never seen the movie, so we rented it and watched the movie, just to see the house. I laughed because in the opening scene where Clark Gable is putting a lady on the train to Chicago, it is a West bound train. In Reno the railroad station is on the South side of the tracks. On the Holiday, I love how the gardener is trying to tell him do not tell her. Love Iris's dog. My favorite scene is the three way phone call, Kate Winslet does such a wonderful job in the scene. The Wife and I have wondered about Amanda's coats, if she brought all of them, or is she wearing some of Iris' coats. The first time we saw this movie was in our house on one of the movie channels.

How well I relate to the character of Iris in this movie. Maybe more of us than care to admit fall prey to a guy who cannot or will not commit--at least not to us. They want to hedge their bets by stringing you along with their habitual unfaithfulness. Even when faced with committing to another woman as with Jasper Bloom, they can't bear the thought of letting you go so you can move on. You do have to get to a point where you say, "Enough! I deserve to be in love with someone that loves me just as completely and desperately as I am with them." Amanda on the other hand, is another type of woman altogether. Fearful of surrendering her heart and getting it smashed to pieces--she always keeps that one little corner of her heart guarded and safe where no one can hurt it. Jack Black's character Miles, is the kind of guy I eventually fell for and married. I never ran into the architype played by Jude Law. If there were widowers my age, I never ran into them. But the movie does hold a mirror up to our faces that magnifies our flawed judgement and eventually teaches us that we deserve more.

I loved The Holiday so much! I was so happy to find out that the UK part of the movie, where Iris’s Rose Cottage was was shot in a real village, Shere in UK. Since at that time I lived in Brighron which was about one hour drive from Shere - I had to go there! - I felt as if I was in the movie. Everything was there, the village, the streets, the church with the graveyard, the hills with the view of the clock tower, the cosy White Horse Pub, where I had a British cup of cream tea wth scones... The only thing missing... was ... The Rose Cottage... :( which was purposedly built of fibre carbon just for the movie. But the view from where the cottage stood on the lill was exactly the same! I considered myself so lucky, I could find an visit this charming village! (...in which A Wedding Date was also filmed, btw....)

Seen in theater than hundreds of time afterward. This and Family Stone are my fav holiday family flicks. Really wonderful bonus commentary on DVD if you can find it w Nancy Hans Kate and I think Cameron and set designer. They built Kate's cottage from scratch.. I thought Judes girls were delightful and so believable as his daughters and sisters. Absolutely best girls tent and live the scene with them in it. And Jude has a cow! And Jude in that blue sweater w his blue eyes is enough to make a person swoon!!!

Think this is the first of your watches I've seen that was a re-watch for both of us. I wasn't sure how I'd take watching a re-watch vs. the "omg what just happened" of the first time watches. I've decided that both are fantastic ways to take in a film. Your enthusiasm for a genre I'm a huge fan of myself comes across just as much for the re-watches as it does the first times.

Considering the size of that bed and the fact that we never actually see Iris in her bedroom I wouldn't be surprised if that is a spare bed in a spare room since we already know Grahm comes over regularly. And the couch comment could just be because he's so drunk he can't get up the stairs. Just a possibility. It would make their having sex, likely multiple times Christmas Eve a lot less discomforting

I have literally seen the movie 100s of times at least in part... your review makes me want to set up a DVD to watch the movie as a sleep movie since insomnia is a huge problem for me these days... I love every single interaction between every character... so... there are some lesser known movies I love that I would love to see you watch.... like Creator with Vincent Spano, Virginia Mansen. Peter O'Toole, and Mariel Hemingway ... at one point it was my favorite movie... another fun movie I think you would like is Indian Summer about people in their 40s who go back to the summer camp where they met in the 60s ... also the movie Witness with Harrison Ford and Sabrina... there are two versions... one from the 50s or 60s with Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart and one from the 80s I think with Harrison Ford which I much prefer over the older version... I would be interested in hearing your opinion about it

The auter theory still applies because it doesn't apply to the whole movie only little quirks. And it is especially noteworthy in well known successful Directors. Example: Shane Black and Christmas. Either way it doesn't bother the collaboraters because it doesn't take away from the movie. And you are adorable the way you react to this movie. Jasper Bloom is one of the best villains of all time. Sure, you have Darth Vader, Lord Voldemort, and Hans Gruber. But what makes Jasper so despicable is that he's REAL. Everyone knows a schmuck like Jasper.

I love this movie but the timeline for Iris is jarring. She's been in LA for less than a week before she sees the letter for Arthur and he accepts the invitation. The meet up is on Christmas Eve? Thrown together in a few days? They were planning to do it without him if he didn't respond? I don't get it. Don't even get me started on the day of the event. Iris and Jack (whatever his name was) are having lunch and then both have huge life-changing conversations before the event -- that's a lot for one day. Amanda's romance is quick but the timeline doesn't feel quite so all over the place.

In terms of auteur theory, I think there is a line to navigate the theory and Pauline Kael... The people we often cite as auteurs, let's say Martin Scorsese as nearly the Platonic ideal of this concept... they end up using the same editor from movie to movie. The same cinemaphotographer. The same composer. They have a vision for their films, and they somewhat early on find collaborators who speak their same language. My main criticism of Kael's criticism is it supposed different people with very different ideas coming together. In fact, people often find someone who understands them and wants to work with them again. The overall film is a collaboration. But the director is the coach of the team, and has drafted players who are in line with his gameplan and can see it through.
@ShanelleRiccio
@ShanelleRiccio 3 года назад
I totally agree, it’s like these teams find in each other a common sensibility and work together often enough that it doesn’t discredit auteur theory in my eyes the way Kael criticized it. And I’ve been on enough sets to understand the importance of the directors vision in all of this. If she sees it-the collaborators will see it also

Since you are a fan of Nancy Meyers, maybe you can look back at two other films that I assume you probably watched earlier -- The Parent Trap and What a Woman Wants. It would be fun to hear your thoughts on them.

Loved your reaction. You clearly liked this movie.and it shows. I love rom-coms. Nancy Meyers and Nora Ephron are two of my favorites from this genre. I don't necessarily agree with the auteur theory, but you absolutely can watch certain films and know instinctively who directed it or who the Cinematographer was or who did the Score. This is true about Meyers, Ephron, Tarantino, the Coen Brothers, Scorsese and others. I don't necessarily believe it is that true about Ron Howard or Spielberg. I also agree with you about Jack Black. He seems miscast. I loved him in High Fidelity and School of Rock, but he just seems wrong for this. You should watch "Something's Gotta Give" and "It's Complicated". I especially liked Something's Gotta Give. Any way, two big tbumbs up and Happy New Year.

I love all those ideas for suggestions! I've seen It's Complicated...(I was an extra in that movie believe it or not!) and yeah auteur theory is interesting for me. I can usually pick a Speilberg movie out when it comes to certain genres. like the classic, hazy/dark flashlight beam shot (ET/Jurassic Park) but then his touch is a little more lost in other films of his. I think ultimately I might be on the team of -- the collaborative nature of film is just too great to attribute all of it to one person.
@nikolatesla5553
@nikolatesla5553 3 года назад
@Shanelle Riccio i believe you were an extra in It's Complicated. There were scenes in Manhattan so that makes sense. You absolutely have to watch Something's Gotta Give. Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton, Keanu Reeves, Amanda Peete, Frances Mcdormand. It's my favorite Nancy Meyer directed film by far. It also screams Nancy Meyers style. I own it on Blue Ray and watched it many times with the normal audio and the director's commentary. If you like Nancy's work you will love it.

Oh wow a nancy meyer fan too. My love deepens ha. Seriously though, even just by my pic you might think 'not really the demographic nancy is shooting for'. But they are some of my favorites. Holiday is my solid second probably but i think Something's Gotta Give will always be tops. Jack and diane. Harry Sanbourn and erica "Jaaane" berry (i looked ya up on the internet ha). too good. Edit: yes. I have the score from something's gotta Give and the holiday on my mp3 walkman. Yes, mp3 walkman.

@@ShanelleRiccio oh yea, good ol parent trap. Before something's gotta give I'd have to go with Father of the Bride. pt. 2 oddly enough. That's when the "I want to live in Nancy's world" started ha. I have a soft spot for that one, reminds me of childhood. When George Banks rolls into his driveway and Nina's in the kitchen listening to Etta James. happy place. ha
