The biggest issue with these types of nutrition strategies is in hot weather. If you are a heavy sweater, the mixes don't have enough sodium in them to prevent cramps.

These days I put maltodextrin in whatever sports drink or soda I feel like drinking for the day. It's not crazy sweet, and it digests like a dream. OTOH it's sticky like crazy. I suspect that maltodextrin is the main ingredient in most of these endurance food replacement powders. It's cheaper to buy malto powder, and lets me do whatever I want with it.

Back in my triathlon days I could only use energy/carb mixes at the start of events. By the end I couldn't stomach them (literally) and would only consume water.

I had a doctor(relative) who told me mixing powder in warm water(like half way between hot tea & room temp) dissolves better than room temp. Then just let it cool down or put it in the refrigerator before you go out & it's all good.

I rode the famous muddy Kansas gravel 100 race last weekend and struggled with food. I tried to eat a PB&J sandwich and each bite would just drop out of my mouth. I'm totally going to go powder in the future.

I’ve been using tailwind for years, just recently happened upon a new product that I started to combine with it to address the flavor fatigue you talked about (taterboost). It mixes with hot or cold water. Before I found that stuff I’d stick a baked potato in my jersey (baked in olive oil & sea salt).

You need water. Slamming 7 scoops into a small bottle like that you’re actually dehydrating yourself. It’s hypertonic and when you drink it, it will literally suck the water out of your system to obtain equilibrium. That’s why you were craving just water.

I think I heard about them a little while back seems familiar at least, but when it comes to eating I’m the opposite. I love eating but I’m either starving or can go most-all day on little-no food( on going thing since I was 16. Turned 35 back in match. Had gotten super depressed between 16-17 which lead to at the time having the opposite effect on me vs other people. Some having the feeling of being a comfort eater but food wasn’t on my radar so now I have to force/remind myself to eat since it fluctuate thru out the day / week gets kind of annoying ).

16 years ago (!!!) I did a solo 24 hour mountain bike race and mostly "ate" Perpetuem (a similar thing to Tailwind) and even thinking about that still gives me a kind of Proustian sense-memory but in a much much much less delicious way than a madeleine. Like the memory of it tastes like burning.

All you really need on a bike ride is sugar and a bit of salt. Get a big bag of Maltodextrin put 60-80g of carbs into a bottle with a big of salt and you have the same fuel but much much cheaper than all this special nutrition stuff.

Yeh i just use raw caster sugar bit of salt if hot and half a electrolite tab per bottle per hour anywere from 80 grams up to 140 grams is the max that will mix and definately wash your bottle after your ride .

I’m surprised that after NASA spent so much time, energy and money on space travel that we don’t all ‘eat’ liquid food now. I prefer water in my bottles and having a Dextrosol (glucose) tablet every 45-60mins and on 4hr+ rides I’ll additionally bring 2x packs of 25g Hula Hoops Original. Oh and the by the way, here in the UK, bonking means to have sex…

Just finished the Tuscany Trail (480km 7000m d+, 6 days with no rush) and the continuous eating of gels and bars was starting to feel disgusting even if alternating it with proper food. These powders look awesome, and your friend seems to have already dug this hole by the experience and tips he has.

I've been using Skratch's equivalent for about a year now. (was Superfuel, now SuperHighCarb) Haven't done rides without solid fuel, but for hard multihour rides, I find it works well for getting base amount of calories in, will mix it between 3-400 cal/bottle. Add in a couple bars or chews as needed. But yeah... finish a long ride and not be tired of eating, but not be hungry either. Its kinda odd, but nice.

So glad you brought up the "no waving back" behaviour. I wave at everybody, I'm trying to be a good bicycle ambassador. We can look like unapproachable aliens in our kit, gotta break down some barriers. If another cyclist doesn't wave back I yell "hey" at the top of my lungs. I realize some people are looking down at their cycling computer, but get your head outta your b**t and join the human race once in awhile dude.

I like to mix the science juice pretty strong in one bottle and have a second with water to wash it down. Works for 6-8 hours. After that real food or my digestive system es no bueno. 13:51

I've recently started using the crazy science liquids and 100% agree on the stickiness, it's horrible. But for straight up fuelling it's phenomenal.

Finished a 430km/5000m climb ultra endurance race in 22 hours a week ago, I would say 90% of my energy intake was liquid fuel (Vitargo with electrolytes). Didn't bonk at any point (but it was hard. Check out Jotunheimen Rundt in Norway).

I couldn't do just liquid "food", mainly because it's a psychological thing...gotta eat. I even quit using additives to my H2O because after a while, even on super long rides, my body says no more. I use plain water in my bottles and carry gels and bars and swap between those as I go. BTW He's right about failure to wash your bottles after using additives, major science projects with Alien vibes can be created...lol

You want something solid? Pack in a sandwich bag two slices of stout bread with honey ham, cream cheese, and fruit jam, cut into four squares. It'll cook in the jersey pocket and the flavors will be heavenly by about mile 40. The pieces won't fall apart in your hand, nor overload the digestive system. The honey and fruit jam goes right to work. The bread kicks 20 minutes later, and the ham and cream cheese in 45 minutes, just when you could use it. Snickers bars are available at gas stops in the middle of nowhere, just saying. A banana is an old kicker, too. And hey, there's also nothing like a cold, fizzy 16 oz. Coca Cola Classic if you're bonked near the end of a ride.

Bold move putting 14 scoops in one bottle. I love the berry flavor. usually do 2 scoops + 1 packet LMNT (citrus or raspberry) in a large purist bottle. The salt balances nicely. I did a fasted ride once with home-made electrolytes but quadrupled the recipe in one bottle and let me tell you that was NOT the move. You gotta try this kinda thing once, right?

Durianrider has done it; 200 km on just plain refined sugar and water. Apparently this is all you need. I like to chew on something. Did a 185 mile gravel ride the other day on bananas and Snickers.

I regularly do 100km and 100 mile rides fixed and single speed without eating anything. I'm carnivore and fat adapted negating the need for eating when riding the body just feeds off its stored fat. No gimmicks needed just a sound metabolism!

@@EverythingsBeenDone Anyone can do it, but the discipline initially is in keeping away from tempting tasty carbs. Once that is conquered however it becomes quite easy as the metabolism will be used to running on its own fat reserves.

I sometimes use a "complete food" thing... it could not be called "fuel water", as the result of mixing the powder and water is somewhat dense... more like a shake or a smoothie. I like to use it on long rides towards the latter part. Start the ride with some solid food... but later, when I´m already a bit worn out, I quite often don´t feel like eating anymore, or don't want to get a "heavy stomach" while riding, but I know I should keep fueling... that's when the time for the magic drink comes...
