I rode Perth’s last tram

I was lucky enough to be offered a tour of the headquarters and workshops for the Perth Electric Tramway Society in Whiteman Park. Operating since the 80s, they offer the unique experience of riding vintage trams on a purpose-made route throughout the park.
During the tour, I was given insight into their extensive tram collection, the process of restoring and maintaining the cars and additional tram history in Western Australia.
At the end of the tour, I was given a ride on the E-Class 66 - the last tram to EVER run in Perth.
A big thanks goes to Shane and the rest of the society for allowing this video to be possible!
If you haven't seen it, here's a video where I explore the remains of Perth's tram network: • What remains of Perth'...

Hi Brendan, thanks for the excellent video. Interesting that you rode Perth's last tram. I used to know a tram enthusiast friend here in Melbourne, who actually rode the last Perth tram in Perth on the last day of public operation back in 1958, when the system closed. My friend has since passed away, but during his life, he traveled worldwide riding and filming tram systems over the years. Great seeing the workshops there. I managed to ride an H class tram on the Glenelg line when visiting Adelaide back in 1982. Interesting seeing the Fremantle tram. That tram system closed in 1952, which is also the year that I was born. Interesting hearing about the Kalgoorlie tram later used in Perth. I was fortunate enough to ride both the Ballarat and Bendigo tram systems, while in operation, back in January 1967. At that time, I lived in Sydney and it was my first ever trip to Melbourne. I eventually moved to Melbourne from Sydney in mid 1981. Anyway, take care and all the best. Rob in Melbourne Australia.

It's good to see that some people actually still care about these things. The amount of time and effort required to run an operation like this is mind blowing. Also, the knowledge that Shane shared with us here is amazing and doing it for 20 years is incredible, thank you very much for your service, Shane. As a volunteer myself (6 years now) I know how much time goes into this. I only moved to Perth in 2008, so this channel and it's WA content is super interesting for me. Again, thank you Shane, your contribution is greatly appreciated and thanks to Bendan and his "assistant" partner. Great video as usual.

There is a old train track that goes from my hometown Pinjarra and leads to the town my boarding school is in Narrogin. Ran through Dwellingup and was called the Hotham valley train line. Lots of cool stuff there for you to look at.

Great vid mate. TIL that Holden made trams, that's definitely a new one for me! Twenty trams running together sounds nuts, must have been hell on the traffic.

Holden and Frost were one of the first "body builders" that built Fords in Australia also. Most Holden lovers don't like to hear that though :P

really great show. after i moved to perth in 1987, i thought i was having psychic experiences in some roads about trams running along them. i later noticed it was because of the spacing of poles, and them being of steel not wood, along some roads that reminded me of melbourne. so i wasnt having psychic experiences. i never knew perth once had a tram system. welshpool road between shepparton road and the armadale railway, stirling highway and beaufort street are three that i remember having closely spaced power poles. the tramway poles, and trolleybus poles had been repurposed for electricity. i think all these poles have been removed now.

Love Whiteman Park! It’s one of Perths hidden gems. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a few tram cars in peoples backyards. There is one in North Beach that looks very tram like. These are some of the best Perth related videos I’ve seen.

I found this channel this week and have binged every video, I love it. Local history has always been my favourite thing and I was never taught much of it in School; it was always the first fleet or the world wars so this is amazing. May I recommend you check out the Swan View Train Tunnel? It’s part of the heritage trail in the hills and it’s really accessible and in great condition

I travelled to Seattle, Washington a few years ago, and saw firsthand the Pemberton, Western Australian built trams shipped sometime last century to Seattle, Washington for use, and I understand, are still in use today. Would be very interesting to see what facts and history you can find on this often unknown fact. Quite fascinating. Thanks for your videos!

I came across a tiktok on an old settlement in Kings Park and asked my Dad about it as he did grounds keeping there back in the 70s and my goodness ! Theres old settlements, a tunnel to Parliment house, even plans for a nuclear bunker during the cold war, super interesting stuff
@skippymaster57
@skippymaster57 2 месяца назад
There was a nuclear bunker in Belmont in the 70's and 80's. I went there a few times to work on the telephone equipment for Telecom Australia. Fascinating place. I know where it was, but was told that I couldn't divulge the location because of the Official Secrets Act. They used lamp signal boards (think old manual switchboards), because of the fact that they would still work if an EMP destroyed all the electronics. The rooms complex were also sitting on springs with a gap in case of earthquake.

Couple of corrections… 65 trams were lost in the Paddington fire in Brisbane The Melbourne art trams were part of an arts program (i think it was called art on the move or moving art) where artists were invited to paint a tram

Is the Whiteman Park tram system on narrow or standard track gauge .. anyone know?
@Arachouette
@Arachouette Месяц назад
The Whiteman park trams are all on standard gauge, including the WA trams. It was decided to have everything run on standard gauge as a lot of the equipment is easier to source. Even though the WA trams used to have narrow gauge they run on standard gauge really well thanks to their wide bodies
