Very good Pritch. Go back and start from the beginning. You can't start half way. The camera guy is brilliant. He's a keeper. Can you just put him on the bike and in front of camera? You can do the behind the scenes stuff. Good video Pritch! 👍👍

Saw your teaser for this video. Didnt realise it was two breakages ... thats tough to take. Not uncommon for a break to damage the links either side, especially on those fragile dura ace ones with the cut outs. When I was running those chains I always used to carry the piece of chain that I cut off to shorten it, and two quick links ... never needed it, but was extra piece of mind when out in the remote wilderness riding solo. When doing ride again, makes sense to start from the start again ... you wouldn't feel the sense of accomplishment if you didn't. Still, top content as always, much humour ..😂👍

If you're carrying that much extra chain, would it not make sense to just have a heavier but sturdier model instead? Probably less weight overall.

Always keep a few solid pins with me and Bontrager multitool that has a really decent splitter. Better than a standard size splitter too.. After going through a spat of breaking XT Chains on my MTB a couple of years ago I've learnt my lesson where a lot of climbing is part of a ride. I remove the quick link off a new chain and use the solid pin option instead. That dodgy mount footage - I really thought you'd stacked it on the decent through a wet corner.

You absolute kno#head Loved the video as always Pritch, I've had a 7900 chain before, swapped it out as I found cracks in the faceplates after 1000kms or so (was using regular chain lube then too). I run ultegra 11 speed chains now on my 10 speed groupos. No issues with using wax. Do the ride again, or not. You could ride a tricycle around minehead velodrome and it would still be one of the best videos. Your humour is brilliant.

I've done the Fred Whitton, and The Yorkshire Beast. The Yorkshire Beast is harder, way harder. Don't try it without training properly.

From my experience the more expensive a chain I buy, the more unreliable it is. 105 chains have always been most reliable for me.

I have had a KMC chain come apart, lucky only a 4klm walk home. Quick link to fix I thought. Could not get it to work. Went back to the old school way of joining, no problem since. Do think that 11sp chains have design tolerances which are tight and have to be joined perfectly. More luck than judgement.

Savage with the chain breaking....you mentioned Absolute Black chain wax, was it their pre-waxed chain or one you waxed yourself? I use it (love it!) but not bought their pre-waxed chain.

@@chrispritch i find the chain/cassette stays way cleaner vs traditional oils for way longer and super easy to re-wax when needed. I think you’re right, you’re just smashing too much wattage mate! 🦵🏻💪🏻😁

I know it’s personal preference but I will only use KMC and would swear by them. If you go to do it gain you have got to start at the beginning but you know that don’t you my dear friend 😂

Hey Chris. That is proper gutting! Not sure where you got that chain but I had one that did exactly the same. Turns out it was fake! Yeah reckon you need to start it again. If you do it again (when!!) I actually live on Whinlatter Pass which is about half-way so happy to provide some support if needed.

Start it again to prove you can do the whole route. Also go with a kmc chain not a shimano (the better)

Ironically its kmc that make shimano's chains for them as far I know. Weirdly I've snapped shimano chains back in the day but never a kmc and I've been using for untold years now on everything from my DH bikes to my road bikes.

wouldn't have thought it was the wax. Could be a fake chain depending on where you purchased it. If it's new I would contact sellers. I snapped a 3 week old Rotor chain once, when I contacted them they assumed it was on the quick link but it was actually the middle of one of the regular links. They were so keen to get it back and analyse it incase there was a faulty batch they had me ship it back direct to them

Seriously... only a 28 on the cassette? Or is smaller? Lunatic! You stopped on Honister just where I did on my Brommie, but for me, it was having the wrong tunes and accidentally trying to keep cadence with the tunes, rather than realising how much I was dying. Didn't break the cheap 8-speed chain on it though. Got to the top. Realised on the descent why they don't really want Brommies doing the Fred. Unfinished business for you! Use a 32!

You are wrong about the chain pritch. It does get better than Durace, hollow pin chains are shite imo they just shave a few grams off and you don't need to save weight on a chain. Solid pins=much stronger and the chains are made from the same grade materials. Oh and start from the beginning you lightweight 😁👍

I broke a chain Chris going up my road where I live and couldn’t get out of my clips and fell in to a garbage bin and broke 4 ribs 😭😭😭 Didn’t hurt though coz I’m from Yorkshire 💪 Joking it was fucking killing me for weeks after 😂

I reckon it could be a fake chain...read about some dodgy Dura Ace chains floating about on eBay. I use KMC chains without issue, Wipperman Connex look like some of the best to me as well.

Yes 99% sure it a fake chain, sure Shimano don't do slotted links, they do hollow pin but not slotted links. Just looked on Shimano website, and no slotted links!

Shimano chains are utter pants. Broke 2 on uphill sections. Both came with the bikes. Both replaced with KMC. Never had a chain break on me since, touch wood. Breaking them has nothing to do with chain wax. The chains are just complete s**t.

'Chain Wax' one of the more recent cycling marketing strategies to try and obtain our hard earned!! Totally unnecessary when Lube is more than perfect for the job. Good try Pritch.....go on 'ave another go!!

@@chrispritch I get that, but was coats the outside of the chain, good for the drivechain but not the chain. Lube seeps in and lubricates the inside rollers and pins where the friction occurs.

Check my old Strava account. Last month bran new Dura ace chain snapped done about 150k It’s the chain it’s wank ✊🏼💦 first time back on shimano in years for me and last. I’m going back to Campagnolo and sram on gravel etc Not the wax it’s the chain, apparently KMC is what you need for shimano
