I L O V E this video! Love it. I am becoming a 72 year old American snooker player (played pool most of my adult life). Sadly (tragically) there the only snooker table available to me is an old 5 X 10 Brunswick. I recently bought a Riley 3/4 cue (tip measures 9.7mm) with a 6' extension and it came in a nice hard case. I've managed to get several guys to play some racks with me (I won most of them) but I could really stand to improve my break building. My current high break is a mere 23 points - 2 Blacks and one pink then a missed red. I am beginning to develop feel for the shots as you show in this vid - your placement of the cue tip on the White for the different desired outcomes is tremendously helpful. Thank you very much! A guy that played with me today had never played snooker before - he did quite well and when we finished I told him about your you tube channel. I hope he finds this video. It will be great fun to play with him on a regular basis. BTW our scores were low and this video will certainly help us improve and to make greater breaks.
This is the best way of describing how to break build... probably better than being with you in person as the graphics help so much to understand where to hit the object ball etc. 10/10 and thank you so much as I now can't wait to get back on the baize.
Thanks again for your videos, I have had a health scare but now tested clear so concentration is back. I bought myself a half decent cue and by using your techniques, the roll em in helped, I managed a 42 break today on the line up, my best for a long time. Chris
Hi Steve, When I watch a match on tv I notice how the announcers always seem to know beforehand what shot the players are looking at and where the cue ball will end up positionally. Understandably, this is because they have also played the game at a high level. Perhaps you could provide a video that would help us amateurs when it comes to choosing the right shot in certain circumstances where there is more than the obvious shot available, or, when I should be playing a safety instead of going for the pot. Big Thanks for all your videos, they have definitely improved my game. Douglas
4.41 watch how he favours left hand side feathering by slightly cutting across in the feather delivery, then he brings the cue back, and then from the pause forward, he delivers to centre ball. It looks quite often like he is going to put a trace of left on but hits the middle. Watch it at 0.25x speed. He does it alot.
Good things: Graphics r simple and they r effective. Kindly keep it simple in future too. Too much graphics ruins a video. I m glad u talked abt feel. Lately i realised that this game is more and more abt touch and feel. So, it is a validation for me. I hv been playing snooker fr 5 yrs but somhw i was not able to make pots. It was very diffucult fr me to pot two balls in succession. But i dnt knw wat has happnd my game has improved a lot suddenly. I pot 4 to 5 balls in succession. I feel from here my graph would be exponential. Lastly, i did nt knw that angels exist in form of man too. Thanks fr being there.
No real need. Some players do it as it makes the pot feel more comfortable, others don't. You don't have to do it though. Check out the previous video to this one where I explain why in detail.
I noticed you played quite a few of the little screw/stun shots with a trace of side even tho the cue ball wasnt going to bounce off the cush. Can you please explain why side was necessary on those shots. Thx.
You don't have to Mike. It's not necessary. Some players do it as they just feel it helps the pot a touch, others don't. So yeah, the side isn't doing anything 👍
@@BartonSnooker but dont you have to adjust your aim (not centre pocket) when applying side? Just curious why some players find it helps the pot? Does this mean on the majority of these shots using side in this vid you dont have to sight it differently to a centre ball strike? … This game drives me nuts. Haha.
I noticed you use/talk about helping side more so theses days Steve. 4:50 shame you didn’t follow through with this shot using a dab of left for the last red. Head still, watching the white slot in right behind the red.. Would of been the perfect feel shot, as coming off the Back-cush from the black for reds is; ‘fundamental feelings;) Graphics on a different level btw. Regards
4:50 It's the hard side to use isn't it with a dab of left, much easier to just plain ball the pink. I've always played with side, just never bothered mentioning it before as it isn't actually necessary. You don't actually need to play that way. I had so many videos where people noticed on the headcam ones that I play with side, so now I just show it on screen. As I say, you don't have to play that way as it's not necessary, but because I had so many comments about why I was playing it, I now just show it and mention it.
Sure, I mentioned it as you didn’t use the black Cush at all. Could of been a perfect ending playing all the shots, like you were 34 behind.. There’s me romantic and over thinking 😅
Hi there. I notice you usually use side when potting, typically left hand side when potting to the right and vice versa. How does that help the pot? Is it really needed? I am not great at potting with side yet
I know you may not respond to every comment but I am just wondering why you always add a little left screw side when potting the black from the left side of the table? I thought side was only to help coming off cushions. I'm very new to snooker. Thanks
Hi Steve. Lovely to watch. Im just a beginner. Can i ask, when you are down on a shot to hit centre cue ball can you actually decide to add a little side while down on the shot - without getting up and re sighting and position your cuing? I only ask as i think i am making this mistake and missing pots when applying side in this way. I guess doing it when im down on a shot means i need to shift the butt to get the tip to apply side (albeit a minuscule) and then my shot is out of alignment. Or is this something as a top player you can get away with doing? Thanks.
If I play with side, I get down to play with side. I don't adjust on the shot. I would avoid using side if you are a beginner and just build up a good solid foundation before worrying about applying side spin.
Just curious… where are you based please? I’m in harlow, Essex… I really need help with, well, everything… Or do you know of a Great coach near me that teaches similarly to you?
this is not a criticism, more of an observation which catches out most players who want to improve. I watched this back in slow motion and noticed a flaw which I also have. When you play a shot with side your cue path is not perfectly straight - like you are 'helping' the side. If you pause the video on your follow through it seems the cue line is 5-10mm off when viewed from just forward of your headcam. Put the video on full screen and position the mouse pointer in the middle of your cue when feathering, you will see what I mean. Love your vids and am sharing with a few kids who I am helping
You know when you roll about along the floor to someone else, and you judge based on how heavy the ball is and how far away the person is, you feel how hard you need to roll it. That's what I do when I play snooker.
