Dr. Christopher Kerr speaks at a 2015 TEDx event Buffalo, New York.
Dr. Christopher W. Kerr is the Chief Medical Officer at The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, where he has worked since 1999. His background in research has evolved from bench science towards the human experience of illness as witnessed from the bedside, specifically patients’ dreams and visions at the end of life. Although medically ignored, these near universal experiences often provide comfort and meaning as well as insight into the life led and the death anticipated.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I was scheduled for surgery in 2010 and the morning of my surgery my mom and sister found out my uncle passed away suddenly the night before. They didnt tell me because they were afraid I wouldnt have my surgery. I had surgery and came home several hours later. I went to bed and slept through the night. My uncle visited me, standing at the foot of my bed and said I'd be just fine and he wanted to let me know my cancer was gone and he would keep an eye on me. Then he said goodbye and he loved me. It was vivid, and real.

I am so sorry for your losses. It is very, very common especially for the elderly that when they are closer to passing that they see and call out to their moms. Or dads or both. It’s actually so common that it is one of the things that a hospice nurse might tell you that is a sign of the time of passing getting closer. I think it is really nice to think that maybe those who go before us are waiting. I sure hope that to be true. I feel like it is.

Katie Kat my pawpaw would call out for "momma" and my parents believe he was calling for his mother but he used to call my mammaw "momma" as well and she died less than 4 months before he did. Looking back on sure he was calling for his mother ......"momma" .....because the night actually less than 24 hrs before he died I was sitting in the room alone with him, watching him, at times he would look as if he had stopped breathing. During one If those breathless times he gasped, reached up, looked up and said, "Katie" that was my Mammaw's name........I miss him so much miss her too! I know I will see them again one day though!

I was taking care of a hospice patient when my brother died. She hadn't spoken above a whisper in weeks. My brother died on a Thursday afternoon 7 months after a stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis. He was buried on a Sunday and I returned to work on Tuesday. Around 2am my patient clearly said "Your brother is here". She had no idea I had a brother. She didn't know my brother was sick and had died. I didn't see him, but I like to think he was there to comfort me. I miss him every day.

I was a volunteer helper for Hospice. I would go to the homes of patients and give the families some relief to run errands, take a break, etc. while I watched their loved one. One case involved a 90 year old man, very close to death. While sitting with him, he suddenly bolted upright, looked around his bed and said to me, with eyes bright and shinning, “They are all here, they tell me a party is going on and they came to get me.” He started calling out names of men, interspersing them with loud cowboy type whoops. When he finally fell silent, eyes closed he had the biggest smile on his face. I had written down all he had said at the request of his son. Later that day the son returned and told me that the names were of his fathers best friends, fellow cowboys that had worked a cattle ranch, out west, for years. They had all passed away. I can’t tell you how much joy it gave the son to think that his father’s friends had come for him to take him to a party.

One of the last things my great uncle said as he was dying was, "my cows are here"!! He was a farmer with cows that he was very attached to, almost like pets. This is not only reassuring to me concerning the subject of an afterlife, but also makes me hopefully that there are animals present in paradise. It wouldn't really be paradise without them. ❤️🐾

I worked at a hospital as a transporter. I moved beds, medicine, bloodtests and patients, including those who had recently passed away. Something I've noticed was that nurses were sometimes scared to follow me down into the morgue. They were scared of their own patients, just because the life had left the body. I was nervous and scared at first, but after a while I took my job with honor. A person's body is their greatest treasure, and it was my job to make sure that their treasure got moved down to the morgue with dignity. Some days were hard, some were not. But I always made sure that the feet of the deceased were properly tucked away, that their arms were crossed over their chest, that their body layed properly on the bed before I closed the door. It might just be corpses to some, but to me they're still valuable, and should be treated with respect.

When my bff was dying of cancer, she was fighting. She didn't want to die. She was still a young 60 yrs old. The day before her body gave out, she became at peace. She stopped fighting and said, "I love you all, but my dad's here and I'm going to go with him." We both believed in reincarnation and promised that in the next life we would come back as sisters.

She was not communicating, and was literally fighting..rolling around, (I've wondered if she was in extreme pain). Couple hours later, I wasn't with her, the person with her, said there was nothing inspiring and comforting for us to hold onto as she went, she had just stilled, opened her eyes for a moment, and left us. I was at a football game and the guy next to me fell out with a heart attack. They stopped the game and hit him often with the paddles. His color was an odd grey and I knew he was gone. I kept looking up because people always tell of floating up above their body. I kept staring up but saw nothing. The guy suddenly gave them a heartbeat and he was taken by helicopter to the hospital. I felt compelled to visit him two days later and when I walked in the hospital he immediately recognized me as the guy "who kept looking up at me," he said that I must have seen him because I was looking right at him above us. I left his room with very large goose bumps.

I had a patient up in step down who was actively dying. As her nurse I stayed by her side and comforted her as much as I could. After about 20 min she began to wave towards the corner of the room. She had this immediate glow and joy. She grabbed my hand and said “look say hello to my mom” she began reaching her arms out to the the empty corner of the room. She died within the hour. So yes, I can confirm these things happen and there is no class or lecture about it🙏

One of those times, he said he saw Ronnie Van Zant, and Ronnie said something like, "What are you doing here, boy? I had brain surgery and was frightened out of my mind. The night before my surgery my deceased father (died when I was 13) spent what I perceived to be hours of him hanging out with me in my dreams. We sat together and talked for hours. Then he came to me again as I was waking up. He said tell your mother I am there for her also. I messaged her at 5 am (surgery at 7) and I told her what he said. She was astonished and indicated she had been up hours crying by that time. My dad ironically died during surgery. I was afforded peace by that dream. When people die the chemical DMT Is released into the brain and causes hallucinations peaceful hallucinations often causing the people to see family members who have already passed away this phenomenon has been studied by neurological scientists and doctors and they studied people who had flat lined on operation tables during surgeries and because they had technically died chemicals were released and caused them to experience out of body experiences and dead relatives comforting them but religious people don't want to hear that it's caused by chemicals releasing after the brain stops receiving oxygen instead most people prefer to believe that there is an afterlife an i don't blame them I'd like to believe that too but unfortunately I wasn't able to just accept that there was an afterlife I wanted to know if there were any other possible reasons that could cause people to experience these visions and after researching for a long time and following what these scientists and doctors were learning I had to agree with them because it's evidence that's been presented and can't be ignored like when a person takes DMT it causes the same type of effects that it does when it's naturally released by the brain it seems that our body is so impressively designed that it has a way of making death peaceful and not scary which is remarkable and at the same time not surprising considering how impressive the human body well all living things bodies but ya I still like to listen to people tell these stories because deep down I of course want to still believe that there is an afterlife I have lots of people that would be there 😊

I worked for 20 years in assisted living, in that time I have seen many elderly pass from this world to the next. The one thing they all had in common was that their deceased relatives were coming to them in dreams to take them home. On a personal note, my daughter who was in a coma for six weeks told me her grandparents were around her bed telling her that everything was going to be alright and not to worry. He father, Uncle, and Aunt were also there, all these family members had passed away. She said she was frightened at first but then she felt better. My daughter passed away five months later. I know she is with family who love her.

My stepdad had visitations from his family and friends 2months prior to his death. First incident was- He told my mum that he was having good time with his friends, his friends visited him and they had a party in his home. When actually we all knew he was by himself. From that day he had visitations from members of dead family and friends for 2 months. He would talk to them but at the same time was aware what was happening in this world. Doctors told my mum he will die soon. Even though he was fine, didn’t have any illnesses but I guess they knew that his time has come because of these visitations. They called it hallucinations, which in reality is very real.

I remember a patient who was never very talkative and it was very difficult to even get a smile from him. Not because he was in pain or seriously ill. Went by him one day and he was looking up towards the ceiling smiling his head off, looked so happy. I asked him if was OK, barely moving his head, he said yes. I went into the sluice room, only for a couple of minutes, came out and he had died. But I'll always remember the sheer look of joy on his face, I believe he was seeing something, or someone which made him so happy. That was nearly fifty years ago, and I've never forgotten.

My wife and I , along with my sister in law took care of my 88 year old father when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. About a month before he passed away, they had this little dog. She was always growling looking towards the corner of his hospital bed Hospice had set up in my parents living room for him. I asked my dad, what is wrong with that dog? He said she probably senses my mom and dad. They are here waiting to take me home. I asked him how long have they been here? He said just a few days. A month later he died, After he died. Mom, she was 89 years old at the time..she said now she can go ahead and go home to Heaven as well. She said she was just waiting for dad to die so she could go . Dad died June of 2011, Mom died in September of 2011. She died suddenly. I thought I’d share my story of people seeing love ones before they die. It was really a eye opening experience when my father told me about his parents being there waiting there to take him home. I’ve heard story’s about that. They were married for over 60 years. I really miss them...it was an Honor to take care of both of my parents while they were in poor health.

I am just 75 and understand what you are saying and as a friend of God I believe you are right. I have learned much in 75 years but the most important thing learned (sorry to say learned in seems the past 10 years) is I don’t know anything compared to what I could and should know by now. I have said to my Father that I want to out live my wife so she will never be alone. Father gets that, and why not, He knows. Sure I talk to God, He’s always open to conversation and ends up telling me stuff, like what you are telling me if only I would pay attention. You are a honorable, reasonable and logical man so is God, this I do know.

My mother was Buddhist. She joined this religion after marriage and while stateside. She practiced for over 55 years this faith of hers. When she was near death, I told her that if Jesus reaches ou to her, take His hand please. The next 2 weeks until she died, she would barely look at me. I was really torn but not regretful about speaking to her of Christ. Her last few days she was mostly asleep.. What comforts me is that God spoke to her in a way I couldn't and took her home after she reached back. I had three dreams after she died which showed me, thru God that this was His work. He gives us dreams and visions to help us know He loves us.

I’m sorry about your dad’s passing. When you grieve, it makes it harder for them to visit you. What they need most is a prayer. My coworker came into work one day and told me her grandmother had died, and then told me this story. Her grandmother lived in her own apartment, but family members came every morning and evening to help her. The morning before my coworker's mother had arrived at the apartmet and the grandmother told her that her deceased sister had visited her the night before and she was going to die that night. The mother tried to reassure her but she was adamant. When my coworker's aunt arrived that evening and put her into bed, she repeated the story. The aunt told her not to be morbid and also reassured her that she was in no danger of dying. After her daughter left, the grandmother got up, put on her best outfit, jewelry and did her makeup and got back into bed. The next morning they found her dead all dressed up.

This is about a pet that visited me from the other side. My childhood cat, Meowzers, passed after 18 years of life in April of this year, he was the healthiest happiest cat I’ve seen, even up until those last weeks. It’s one of the most difficult losses I’ve dealt with so far, especially the first few months. I dreamt about him a lot but always woke up missing him more. Not comforted. Until I had a dream in June, I don’t know what took him so long…but you know cats follow their own agenda. In the dream I had been taken back to my final morning with him, coming upstairs at 6am seeing him hardly be able to lift his head, running to wake up my parents, but in the dream they said, “it’s okay tell him you love him he’s right here.” And then my cat spoke to me and said “I’m okay.” And we sat on the kitchen floor while he watched angels flying around the room that I couldn’t see but I knew they were there. And he started to walk up into the air with them. I woke up sobbing and feeling so at peace. I knew that had been my cat that had visited me. Anyways thanks for listening.

My dad died when I was 9. He’d been in the hospital after a surgery and I think he knew he was nearing the end of his life, but I remember him being very emotional when we went to visit him. That night after coming home, he visited me in my dream. It was kind of what Heaven looks like to any child. We were in the sky surrounded by clouds, and while I’m sure there were other people around I just distinctly remember seeing my father dressed all in white. He was very tearful and said that he was sorry and that he loved me. Then I woke up and when my mom’s phone rang I knew that it was the hospital and that he had died. I’ve never told my family about this because I know they wouldn’t understand or would think it was just a dream, but it was real. Thanks to this final meeting, I never cried about my father’s death. Part of me thought it was weird for the longest time, but then I realized I’d been able to say my goodbyes peacefully and I knew he was safe so of course I wasn’t sad. I’ve always been a bit afraid of the actual process of dying, but after that day I’ve never been afraid of life after death.

Greetings. It may sound weird but I have the same story. My dad was at the hospital due to COVID-19 and I was with him the day before his death and by night I came home for rest and my brother went to look after him. I could not sleep all night I prayed for him alot and then in the morning I got asleep for a while and at that nap (((I saw my father in dream he told me for shopping and I said ok I will go it in a minute I am little busy now. Then he stood and said it's all right son I will go, I said no I am just leaving but resisted and forced me to stay and left on his bicycle waving behind the back and at the very moment I woke up by a scream of my sister holding phone. I was half awake and I was telling her as if I was still in dream, "has he left?" She screamed yes he died. And Then I woke up completely and realized that he has gone from our life at the same moment that I dreamed him leaving. ))) Both dream leaving and real dieing was at same time. I was 19 and That was the first family members I lost as a grown up boy. It was extremely difficult but now I am relaxed and waiting for his peacefull call.

I regret when I hear excellent talks such as this one that Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross is not mentioned . She was the first to begin talking to dying patients about their deaths and document it's value. She almost lost her hospital privileges because at the time it was very offensive to tell people that they were at the end of life, denying them the experiences mentioned by Dr Kerr. She helped establish the hospice care system in this country.

I wasn't born for this but apparently my great grandpa died from cancer when he was 66. At the time, his father was still alive and was like 94 years old. A few months later, he got sick. I'm not 100% sure what he had but I think it may have also been cancer. One day, he told his wife that his son George came for a visit the night before. Though he was told George had been dead for six months, he kept insisting that it was really him, and he died not long after that. Apparently, he also came and visited my Grandma to let him know that he was okay in the afterlife (she's still alive and that was almost 40 years ago so clearly that was not an end of life hallucinatory thing)

@@HenryTheBoilermaker3rdYear It happens. I had a dying patient in the ICU that we took down to the CT scan during our night shift. Thankfully he didn't go into arrest, but we had to have a discussion about what we would do in that case (ie: resuscitate as my resident wanted, or let die as my attending preferred). What I could do and did was hold his hand, look into his eyes and say everything is going to be ok. He lived through the night and died with his wife by his side.

I helped my Dad transition on 4/22/22. “Daddy, what would you like to stay or go?” I looked at him laying there without answering me. I can see him (his spirit) looking at me then at my mom sleeping at the hospital chair. “I’m worried about your mom,” he said. It was hard to him to let go of her, together for almost 50 years. He was looking to her for guidance & permission. Permission for him to leave this realm and go to another. To confirm she will ok without him. He wouldn’t leave until she said it’s ok to go sweetheart. I’ll be ok. :) it was the most heart touching moment of my life. I lost my Dad but I gained the true meaning of love.

I had a lonely, difficult childhood. Never saw my father till I was 17 years old. He was distant and very cold with me, maybe because of guilt for not looking after me. The day he died I was on the other side of the globe. I was staying in a friend's house then suddenly an old, dusty, broken grandfather's clock started making a very loud noise. About 5 minutes later my mother was on the phone saying that my father has died, on the hour that the clock started banging. When my friend got back home I told her that the clock was banging. She thought I was crazy because that clock hadn't been on use for 20 years. Second. My aunt and I had a small disagreement before she died of cancer. On the hour of her death, I was again on the other side of the globe. It was noon and was about to enter a huge mess hall with trays and trays of food lined up. As I opened the mess hall door a splash of flower scents, like that of a string perfume hit me on the face. Again, I heard the news of her passing. I guess dying people want to reconcile to people whom they have hurt or wronged. I have forgiven them from day one.

I was in a really bad car accident. While I was in the helicopter I started to die. I was bleeding to death. I spoke to god and told him I was too physically hurt to fight and asked him to take it from me that I would live or die by his will. A bright silver light surrounded me and I felt at peace and wasnt afraid. I made it to the hospital. I had a ruptured spleen, major blood loss that caused a massive heart attack. Lung damage, both legs were broken. My left femur came out of my leg and i lost a little bit of it. I had to have multiple surgeries and a trach. I was in the hospital for almost 7 months. 2 months of that was under deep sedation. I got pneumonia and came close to death 4 times. One of those times i saw both of my grandmas and a cousin who passed in a car accident just like mine. One grandmother told me that I was going to be ok and she loved me. We were standing in a field with trees surrounding us and the brightest sun and colors you have ever seen. I am home now. I am in a wheelchair and can walk some with a walker and hav a ton of scars but i am here by gods choice.

Once when I was a child, I was eating a candy and at the same time playing and laughing with my brother. A couple moments later I realized with a horror that I couldn't breathe. I had accidentally inhaled a hard candy and it was stuck in my throat, blocking the air. Being unable to breathe, I looked at the sky and said to myself "well that the end". My little brother wasn't able to understand what is going on so I rushed to my parents that were in their room in hope that they would save me. And then the weird thing happened that I still cannot explain to this day. The moment I have turned the door-handle to exit our room, I clearly felt a warm man-sized palm hitting me on my back. A couple seconds later after the hit, I coughed and candy flew out of my mouth. My parents rushed to me, asking if I am okay. I said "yes, I am okay, thanks to my brother that has hit me on my back"... just to see moments later that my brother was still at the place where we playing games, too far to even reach me, less said to hit me hard with his palm. I still remember that feeling and that moment as if it was today, but it was 16 years ago. I have asked my brother multiple times if it was him but he always said no, that he never moved. To this day I don't know how to explain that story other than it was my guarding angel who saved me. You can believe this story or not, but for me it was a clear proof that there is something out there.

I worked in the medical field for over 20 years. My father was a physician. He always said, "Dying's easy. It's living that's hard." On his deathbed, my sister, a member of the clergy, asked him if he was scared. He replied, "No. I'm curious." ¶ Some years before his death, perhaps a decade, I proposed a pact with my father. I said to him, "Dad, whichever of us dies first, probably it will be you, but it could be me, I could walk out of here today, get run over by a truck and be dead within the hour, but likely it will be you (he was thirty years older than me), let's make a pact that whoever dies first comes back and visits the other." Dad smiled, nodded affirmatively and said, "If I can." Closer to his death I reminded him of our pact. For six weeks after his death I waited with eager anticipation. Nothing. I shrugged it off and thought 'so much for that.' Then, the next Sunday, I decided to lie down and take a nap after lunch. I went into a deep, one cycle (ninety minutes), sleep. When I waked up I was aware of having had a vivid dream, like none other I've ever experienced. In fact, I don't think "dream" is the right word. "Vision" is a better word to describe that experience. I was in tears on waking. My father had come to visit me. A few months later he came once more. To the reader I say, "Make of this what you like, but it seemed uniquely remarkable to me."

This happened to me after my father's death. It was months later, but I laid down to take a nap. In this dream visitation state I was in a white square room. The room felt as though it were elevated. I was sittting in a chair and to my left there was a white door. The door opened and my father was there. He was positively glowing with a golden aura, he was strong and standing upright, no longer sick and disabled. He looked like he was in his early 30s. He reached his hand out toward me and as soon as I touched his hand, I received three sentences of information all at once. He didn't talk, it just instantly came to my mind when I touched his hand. "Everything is okay. You are on the right path. I will help you." All of those were sent at once, in a split-second, making perfect sense. Then I woke up gasping, my body jolted/back arched as I woke instantly. Then I started bawling. It was so powerful.

My Mom passed away in August of 2018. She had a hard life, because my Dad was an alcoholic ( but still a good man in his soul). Because of this she was very bitter for many years. In the few months before her death she became much more at peace and would just look quietly and lovingly at my Dad, which was so nice to see. She was clearly at peace. In my soul, I knew she would not be with us for much longer. 6 days after her death the sun was shining into our kitchen, and the most beautiful picture appeared on our wall from the sun through the trees. My daughter saw it first and we were in awe. It was a very very clear picture and looked like an angel to us and to all we have shown it to. One of my sisters laughed and said it look like a bat to her and within two days she happened to glance at the TV and it was showing the ceiling of a famous church with a painting of god surrounded by angels EXACTLY like the one that was on our wall. I so wish I could post these pictures for you all to see. It truly is miraculous. I consider myself very spiritual but never looked for anything because I have always believed we are connected anyway. But I feel so blessed to have been left this gift by my mother. It has brought peace to all of our family.

When I was sitting with my dying aunt, who was in a coma, I was the one who had the experience. I looked up and saw two people standing a little way from my aunt's bed. It took me a moment to realise that I was looking at my grandparents. I was shocked to say the least. Later, I spoke to my mother about what had happened. She was not surprised, and told me of others in the family who had had similar experiences. My father thought we were mad! When I was sitting with my mother, as she was dying, the curtains around the bed moved, in fact one of them landed on my head. There was no open window, and I couldn't explain how it had happened. Then I saw my grandparents. Most importantly, mum, although comatose, smiled, and her face showed that she was at peace. I told my father to prepare himself because I knew mum was about to leave us, which, within a couple of minutes she did. 12 weeks later I was sat next to my father as he was seriously, but not fatally ill. He had laughed at mum and me over our "experiences", but as I held his hand, I felt him stiffen, his eyes widened, his mouth dropped. I could not see her, but I quietly asked if it was mum, and he nodded. I was the only one not surprised that he died a few hours later. I have had a close brush with death, being told I had only 48 hours to live. The doctors and nurses couldn't understand my calmness. I wasn't able to tell them that no one had come to me, so I knew the doctors were wrong. My parents were, as you can imagine, unhappy about the news, but mum immediately stopped worrying when I told her I'd not seen my grandparents. I know many will scoff. Many will think I'm mad, or worse a liar. However, I do not care. I know what I experienced, and it gives me great strength. I do not fear death, I'm not ready to go yet, but when I do, I will not be fearful.

A few years after my Nanny (grandmother) passed, I had a dream where she appeared vibrant and illuminated. I had never had a dream of her before or since. She only said two words "Its True"! And so I was racking my brain as to what exactly she was referring to. After about a week or less, I remembered I had had a conversation about God and Afterlife with her. She knew I was a believer in the Afterlife and asked me what made me so sure. I told her (at the time she was in her 80s) I was pretty sure, but that is more likely that she would know for certain before me. So we both made an agreement that whoever found out the Truth first would try to tell the other one!

While I'm relatively 'young' @ 60yrs, there are more than a few days that I also feel tired and miss all those who have gone before. I'm now the only living person in my immediate family - the sorrow when I reach for the phone to share antics of grandchildren with my parents / brother, all passed now, is a sharp hit in realizing yet again there's no-one left to laugh over past and present. The sharpest hit is in realizing that there is no-one left to ask for clarification of shared memories of both my childhood as well as stories told by father / mother of their childhoods.

My brother died on my first day of school after my holiday break in 2009, he appeared to me in a dream or vision and we walked around the school as we were talking since it was a boarding school. Later that day I was called in the office and told that we have a family function that I had to attend, immediately the words "Please God let it not be my brother" kept running in my head, although he was very sick I did not ever imagine loosing him. The trip took 8-9 hours by bus but the words kept playing in my mind. Normally my dad picked me from the bus stop but this time round I went home by myself, I was 18 then. I reached home and saw a picture of my brother framed, he was wearing his school uniform, I broke down and cried because , "please God let it not be my brother" was actually my brother, it took me years for my heart to be calm. 9 years later I lost my Father, I act strong but am writing this with tears in my eyes, it's really difficult to loose someone that you love. I am happy that he always told us that he loved us and he showered us with love equally. Always say I Love you, it comes with peace later in life. I hope this brings hope to someone.

My grandma looked up toward a corner of the hospital room and had a really beautiful smile on her face. My aunt asked her what she was looking at and my grandma said, "I see Jesus and the family." My grandma was the youngest of seven children and the last to die.

My neighbour was surrounded by his family when he passed a few years back. He was baptized Catholic but I don't believe he was a practicing Catholic, so it's beautiful to know that as he was passing, he looked up and said in amazement, "Jesus, you came". I've told many people this story because it's so important for people to know.

Phew, this is good to know, because I'm in the same boat. I was baptized and was even an altar boy for years. But, as time passed, and I worked in a career that tainted my belief system, I gave up and couldn't understand how anyone could allow the things to happen that I unfortunately had to experience. But I told the story about my mom earlier, so based on what I saw, there's definitely something that happens. It just stinks we have no control over anything. I don't know about anyone else, but that scares me. Knowing that I could walk out the door in a few minutes and just never come home. I guess not to this home, but hopefully there's another.

Thanksgiving 2017, we were eating dinner as a family when my Aunt Francie out of nowhere started talking about a dream she had the night before. In it, her long deceased sister Helen greeted her warmly and gave her a letter. The letter was from their long deceased mother. Francie was only a couple months old when their mother died and has no memory of her. In the letter, it talks about how her time is coming and how not to be afraid. She missed her baby and will see her soon. Three days later, she died. I don't know how to explain all of this stuff, but it's something I will never forget.

Last time when I saw her in my dreams, i was showing her off my driving skills (taking diving lessons currently). Guess I just want her to be proud of how far I have made it. Im sure she is. I have made piece with my mom. But still sometimes I get emotional about it. Death really does teach us a lot.

My dad took his life about three months ago. My great grandma (my dads grandma) is 89 and has dementia. We decided not to tell her about my dads death because she would only remember it for about 10 minuets and complete forget. She told my aunt that my dad came over and talked to her, she said that he was worried about his kids and missed me and my brother. She also said that he was cold, so she invited him to sleep on the couch, but he had to sleep outside. She said all this a couple of days after his passing. I don’t think it is just a coincidence, it really means something to me. I love my dad even though he didn’t stay to see me grow up, but I think he is going to watch me grow up in a different place where he isn’t hurting:)

I just want to share an experience I had on the health care hall at a retirement center so that it may bring comfort to those of you that were not with their loved ones when they passed. I spent the night with my father as he was not well and as I got up early in the morning and left his room to use the bathroom I saw a young man dressed in khakis and a blue golf shirt. I could see through his body and it was pulsating with beautiful colors. I immediately realized it was a friend from high school that had passed years ago. He was leaning against the wall of his father’s room. After getting over the shock of seeing him I felt an immediate peace but had no clue why I was seeing him. Two days later his dad passed and I put the two together, he was waiting to cross his father over. I can’t tell many people this as I’m called crazy. Yes, I can see those that have passed as well as receive massages from them. ( can be a gift or a curse) I have always wondered why I was shone this and then the answer for me arrived. My father was choking and the staff didn’t notice and my father passed. I believe I was given that early morning moment to help me deal with my fathers death a few months later. Our love ones do come for us and I’m sure the minute my father was suffering his family swooped in and helped him cross over. Another interesting part of this was my grandfather would come to me in my dreams and explain and tell me things that had to do with my father and his health care. Two nights before he died my grandfather came to me in a dream but said nothing he just had a solemn look on his face. Now, I realize he was trying to give me a heads up. I hope this helps someone! Peace and Love, India

My father had a 40 minute conversation with his mother. A fascinating Q&A. I was standing outside the room, thinking it was having a conversation with a neighbor (double room occupancy). When I walked in and noticed he was the only one there and asked him who'd he'd been talking to and he replied 'your grandmother stopped by to catch up'. I inquired various questions to be sure he's not delirious and when satisfied I thought I'd ask one last thing. I asked him: You were a PhD, Veteran, and a retired Nuclear Physicist... how could grandma talk to you when she's been gone since 1988? His reply: Well that certainly didn't stop her from paying me a visit!

I had a family friend tell me this story... her sister's kids were in bed, asleep when all of a sudden they awoke giggling and laughing. Their mother went to to their room and told them to quiet down. When she asked the kids why they were suddenly awake and why were they laughing. They said "Grandma is tickling our feet" . Their mom told them Grandma was at home and certainly not tickling their feet and to go back to sleep. Not even 10 mins. later the mom got a call to say that her mom (the kid's Grandma) had a massive heart attack minutes earlier and could not be revived.

Something tapped me five very distinct times on the back of my shoulder. I turned my head and nobody was there. Somebody from the other side connected to me in the flesh to comfort me. I worked 11 years as a hospice nurse, and some of my patients talked about the wonderful party that would be thrown for them just after dying. They were happy and excited about seeing loved ones. One lady was so extraordinarily sweet--she said her mother was coming to take her on a train trip--my patient was in her 90s--after which there was going to be a big wonderful party for her. She said "You wanna come?" I told her I couldn't come yet because I had to work, but asked her to save me a spot next to her when I do get there, so she can tell me all about her party. I'm holding her to that promise, in time!

Joseph Marton I don't have any specific answers for you, regarding your personal life. However, the historicity of Jesus is not in doubt by the VAST amount of biblical scholars - - both theist and non-theist. Perhaps the answers you seek are out there, if you open heart and your mind. There are many brilliant Christian apologetics out there, that can help those of us that do have so many questions. Also, just reading the new testament is an awesome experience. I just found out the other day, that the apostles spoke to the Greek philosophers about Jesus. There is a lot more to Jesus & his teachings, than we are taught. I pray you find that which you seek. Joseph Martin, nobody really knows what will happen to you after you die. People will tell you that they know, but they're not the ones who will be doing your dying for you. Death is a personal experience. I said to my sister after my husband died, "I just wish I knew that he's okay". She said, "why not just imagine that he is in the best place possible. It can be anywhere you want". It made me realize that I can imagine anything I want. I don't have to believe. All I have to do is imagine. So, imagine whatever you want because, ultimately, that's all we have.

I did the near death experience thing in 1978 after a terrible car crash but I would like to share someone else's story. In the 90's I was working on an ambulance and the call was a CPR in progress at a church fellowship hall right across from a fire hall. An elderly gentleman was leaving and fell over right inside the doorway. Firemen ran across the street and started effective CPR within a few minutes of the "witnessed" event. A witnessed arrest is just that. Someone saw the person collapse so we know exactly how long they been without oxygen and blood flow. The secret to saving lives is basically the ABC's: Airway, making sure you have a clear airway. Breathing, necessary for life and Circulation, oxygenated blood moving thru the body. CPR is only "effective" if you are able to provide all three things. If your compressions are correct but you are only circulating blood without oxygen you are accomplishing nothing. By same token if you have oxygenated blood but incorrectly doing compressions then the blood doesn't circulate. So on this call I'm thinkin we might have a chance. As you arrive on scene you do an "overview" no matter what the call. As we enter I see the firemen working on an elderly male. His shirt is open and I can see the scars indicating previous open heart surgery. You not supposed to make judgement calls but my first thot was that we were wasting time and energy. This was extremely unusual for me. My partner and I had had 10 (correction. Only 8) CPR "saves" in a 12 month period. Some medics never have a true save. My medic was the best we had at getting a patient intubated, inserting the breathing tube, and as an Advanced EMT I did skills EMTs were not supposed to do, by law. I had told the chief, my friend from childhood, to not teach me lifesaving skills and then tell me i couldn't use them. So my partner and i had a rhythm on CPR. EMTs are not even permitted to hook the patient up to the heart monitor, at least in Tennessee in the 90s, or give any drugs except Epinephrine for anaphylactic shock or Narcan for opiate overdose. So while he was getting patient intubated and IV started I was doin all the other things like the monitor, loading drugs in syringes we would need. Neway, the gentleman was in complete flat line. But we got a heart rhythm back on the way to hospital with me driving. A fireman rode to ER with us.....bout impossible for one person to do effective CPR. So we got to the ER and helped there for a bit but got another call and had to leave. A couple hours later we went back by the ER to see how the gentleman was doing. He was sitting up eating ice cream. I told him I had went thru similar experience and asked him what he felt or could remember while he was flat lined, or basically dead. He said he didn't feel anything. Didn't feel sick or dizzy. Had no idea it had happened. He said in his mind he walked out to his old van, drove home, got out and went in and said, "I bent down to feed my little dogs and next thing I knew I was here with these bright lights and all these people with masks on. I had no idea why I was here or how I got here". In his mind there was no interruption in his life. So if we hadn't have gotten him back would he have went on with his life as he knew it but on some other plain or level? My experience was totally unlike his but my injuries were so terrible I was given up as dying to the point my shattered pelvis was not operated on. I had many other injuries but other than stabilizing me, sewing up my many lacerations including reattaching my torn scalp, they put me in a room and gave me drugs so I could die comfortable. A month later was told I would never walk. My worry over the years, wife sez is ridiculous, is that I stayed dead in that reality but awoke in this one. That in another reality she went on without me with a totally different life and I went on in this one. Yeah, I know, but after talking to that gentleman and others we were able to get back, all with a different story, I'm not sure about anything EXCEPT the final act of dying is painless. It's the living that is painful. In my life of police officer, medic, military contractor I've been present at hundreds of deaths and seen hundreds more dead. Seen people survive unbelievable trauma and yet some died from very minor injuries. I cant remember all we saved but remember bout everyone we cudnt. Then there's my other side as the person trained to take lives. PTSD is my constant companion. Doubt if this gets read but I wish a safe life to all ya'll. Sorry for long post. And have hundreds of stories. Guess they will die with me. Probly for the best . rick, 2019.

I woke up one morning to the sound of my mother yelling for me. I ran downstairs to see my father dead in the living room with a pool of blood coming out of his mouth. He was a severe alcoholic that we tried to help any way we could. I then drank alcohol myself to suppress my PTSD. A few weeks later I had a profound dream of my father and I sitting in his truck. At some point I realized he was dead and that I’m dreaming. He then looked at me and smiled. I said “oh my god I love you and I miss you so much.” Then I woke up. It was so overwhelming I started crying. I still don’t quite get what happened, but I will always remember that dream. To rationalize this I thought of it as him saying “it’s okay.. I’m okay” It was an amazing and relieving experience.

My mother 90 years old was in hospice being given less than a week to live because of an inoperable bowel obstruction. As she faded away they had a tube in her nose to remove bile from her stomach. She hadn't eaten for a week, no IV just water. As she weakened she started talking to dead relatives and holding conversations with them. She was wide awake and talking to me just seconds before and making sense. This went on day and night and I started to greet the visions also to make her feel better. I argued with the hospice nurses that there must be something they could do to try to unblock the intestine. I always look at things from a mechanical view point. I was staying with her overnight in the dark listening to her talk up a storm with people, family. Friends that had passed.I recorded multiple conversations and one night I noticed she would ask a question to the deceased and actually pause for the answer. I played it back over my headphones in the dark from an iPhone and was freaked out that during the pauses by her I could hear static like energy then silence before she spoke again. Needless to say, I jumped off the rubber cot and turned on a few lights I had goose bumps and a sense of calm at the same time. She told a nun that her dead sister showed her heaven and she could stay but she decided to stay here. The nun was really freaked out like she never heard that before, a revelation. I got more determined to do something for my dying mother. One night I brought in some warm Diet Coke and filled her sippy cup to the top, she drank the whole thing. I did that for three nights and on a Thursday the nurses said her intestines cleared out. One night mom pulled the nose tube out of her stomach and they decided not to reinstall it because they had to have three nurses hold her down to do it. They were still insisting her organs were shutting down and that would speed up the process. She had lost 25 lbs by then, and hadn't eaten for nearly three weeks. So I ordered her scrambled eggs and juice. She ate everything. That was on Mother's Day May 12th. She's been eating on her own since then it's been 67 days and no problems. She quit talking to dead relatives, and has even called me on the phone. What I took away from this experience is I'm not afraid of death and believe what I heard was actually happening. I had hoped for a glimpse of acknowledgment of her seeking a deceased relative but she spoke volumes. It especially made me feel good that her 2 cats that passed away over the years came to escort her to the door with the light behind it, but she said she was not ready to go. Mom had open heart surgery 11 years ago and cancer surgery 7 years ago with a 10% chance of survival because the doctor nicked her intestine and had to reopen her the next day and she wound up with a colostomy bag. So she recovered from that and said she just wanted to live to be 90. She recently said, maybe I should have said 100. God Bless Irma.

My sister passed a few years ago. We hadn't talked for a long time due to a sibling rivery prior to her passing. All of a sudden she started showing up in a very real vision, telling me to find her daughter to let her know she was safe now. When I found her daughter on one of the social media sites, I asked her to dinner. We talked and I learned more of my sisters dying etc. I said to her I am so terribly sorry, but I have to tell you the real reason I asked you to dinner this evening. She interrupted me and said, don't tell me mother has been showing up. I was speechless. I said yes she has and wanted me to let you know she is okay now. Her daughter said, "she use to do that to me all the time and I finally asked her to go to where she needed to go". I have never experienced this with any other relative before.

As long as we view "death" as the "end" of life we will miss the most crucial aspect of life. There is no end or beginning as we are continuously in a cycle of rebirth and growth. I had a vivid dream of my dog named Blackie. He had died about 10 years ago In my dream he was on my shoulder and I could feel his silky hair and his warm breath . I woke up and I could still feel his warm body on my shoulder. I had tears and I knew 😢he loved me after his death.

I had a cat that slept at the foot of the bed and passed away years ago. I moved away but when i moved back to my parents i would feel a cat walking in my bed; i thought it was my other cat but she was sleeping on the floor. Charlie had come to visit me.

My grandfather told me something a few weeks before he died and I will never forget it. It was the beggining of 2018 just before my 28th birthday. As my mother and I helped him get to his bedroom (it was hard for him to walk without help) he said: ''I will come to you when you're 92 and we'll have a nice conversation.'' My immediate responce was ''Oh, can it be a bit sooner than that please?'' He said ''No, it has to be 92.''

Amazing !!! I was an RN and relate to everything Dr. Kerr has said. Death is nothing to be afraid of as our dead ancestors, friends and people who have made an impact on our life, come and take us home.

Pure science doesn't exist. Every scientist has presuppositions, certain convictions or axioms, what is in the way to do pure science. Science evolves the more of those limitations are left behind. It's a long process, because most if the scientists wants to keep their beliefs where their are important. Actually science should examine all the areas of life, also the areas that they don't find serious for the moment.

The last words my husband ever spoke were “look there’s Mum”. She had passes several years before. He never spoke again and passed a few days later. I take some comfort in thinking he is with his Mum. He was 47 when he died of cancer and I miss him every day.

Powerful, thank you!!! This brought me such comfort. I lost my husband in August, and he was in ICU dying for days and I was unable to be there with him at the end because of Covid. This talk brought me peace.

Oh honey, this breaks my heart and I too can unfortunately say it is a gnawing, aching void that I wouldn’t wish on even the worst humanity had to offer. I lost my fiancé, the love of my life and my dearest friend on April 8th, 2020. He was only 43. I graduated from nursing school one month later, grateful that there was no commencement as I couldn’t cope with the thought that he would not and COULD NOT be here with me to celebrate one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. Almost 2 entire YEARS out I thought I was doing better, I met someone who is a beautiful but tormented soul. I’ve learned so much, I’ve gained so much clarity and purpose, I started a charity in honor of his unconditional love that helps children that have lost a parent or caregiver to COVID. I am the one with the chronic illness, the one that has been so close to “the other side” including one experience where I fully crossed over and was given a choice in relinquishing myself from the physical pain I’m in every single day (sickle cell anemia)….I NEVER would’ve imagined my dear Sam would be the one to leave me first. As a very spiritually inclined woman I know in the depths of my soul that physical death cannot separate us from love. Love is energy and it never dies….but it doesn’t always soothe the fracture in my soul that was created when he transitioned. It was the beginning of the pandemic, there were no FaceTime calls, I couldn’t be at his bedside to pray over him or to beg and plead with the universe that may just maybe if he could hear my voice he’d pull through. About midway through his 3 weeks on the ventilator I could FEEL that his astral body had ascended. All of the parts of him that made him the greatest love I’ve ever known were now free from a body ravaged by an unseen enemy. I often stay up for days wondering what his last moments were like, was he aware? Was he afraid? What would he have told me even if only with his eyes if I would’ve been able to appreciate his physicality one last time. There were no options for funerals or memorials or ANY of the standard grieving processes we a lot for ourselves. I am so sorry that you too know the often times unbearable pain of trying to move in a world that wants to “get back to normal” as you scream and rage at the void because there will never be a sense of normalcy for you without your partner by your side. If you ever need an ear, PLEASE feel free to reach out. Our darling husbands live on through the love they’ve bestowed upon us. All in all, life is a temporal experience for us ALL and I am just so grateful, even in those moments where it feels my grief will CONSUME me and I’ve contemplated submitting to it…I am reminded of how blessed I am to have experienced pure unadulterated LOVE in a world where that is almost non existent. Send you so much love and healing energy. -Kryss, almost wife of Samuel Wade 💔 🕊

When my mother passed she was on the floor in the hospital and they couldn't revive her. We wanted to sue the hospital for neglect but didn't have the strength. Weeks later I had such a vivid dream of my brother, deceased in 1978, reached out to her, she got up and walked away with him and left her body where it lay.
