The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked will be put out. - Proverbs 13:9 Throughout the bible, the word "light" is used primarily metaphorically. In most instances, we could translate it understanding. So in this instance, the text could read: The [understanding] of the righteous rejoices... But then, if you extend this metaphor and its meaning into some well-known texts of the bible, you will begin to see something. For example, let me read a few key texts that might be familiar to you: 1 John 1:5 reads, "This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light [understanding], and in him is no darkness at all." Psalm 119:105 reads, "Your word is a lamp [direction] to my feet and a light [understanding] to my path." Matthew 5:14 reads, "You are the light [understand] of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." Interesting, isn't it. So in this text, Solomon uses this metaphor to reveal the contrast between two men. One a righteous man who has understanding. And because this man understands, he rejoices. On the other hand, there is a wicked man who is deceived. And this man because he is ignorant, as a result, whatever little understanding he did have is extinguished. The point is this - the man you are determines your understanding, and the understanding you have determines your joy or destruction. But the first step is ensuring you are a righteous man because understanding and joy only come from this.
