I remember wearing dresses like that when I was a child a very long time ago. I have no idea how many time I tore a skirt loose climbing trees and other things in my dresses. The skirts always went back on as if by magic and I kept exploring the world. Looking back, I'm sure my grandmother put my cloths back together. She also started me on my journey of making clothing. Mostly I wear jeans now so I can still climb when the need arises. The doctor said no falling not no climbing and I climb not fall.
@CrimsonVipera

Huh. It's so interesting to see you interpret the dress. I mean, we were looking at the same drawing but I apparently see something entirely different! What you call lace, I always thought was the edge of her high collar slip. And if I were to sew this, I'd opt for hook and eye side opening with functional buttons on the bodice so that I could put the dress over my head. It came out so good! You look extremely cute in this.
@sweetasbloodredjam
@sweetasbloodredjam 3 года назад
Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines. Like Christine mentioned any closure method that Sophie could do herself easily, would be very fitting with her character, and I feel the same way about putting the dress over the head, it seems like something Sophie would opt for. That being said, the finale result is gorgeous regardless.

the dress is super cute! Howl`s moving castle is my favourite Ghibli movie :) I think the made up fantasy version of the dress was the right choice. A real `victorian` dress would have also been pretty, but it wouldn`t have been Sophie`s dress. Btw, a always just want to tell you how much I admire you. This is adorable! I always thought that Sophie's dress was like maybe stepped into or pulled over her head and then the yolk buttons were there to make that possible while being able to be fastened back up for modesty. Or perhaps fastened at the side on the bodice and skirt, with the buttons on the yolk there to more easily allow one's head to go through.

Super cute result! (My thought is the three buttons would be functional. The dress would have a loose wide back, with a bow pulling it together. The bow would be two ties, attached at the side seams at the waistline and tied together in the back. With the bow untied and the buttons unbuttoned it would be quick and easy to pull the dress on over your head, tie the bow behind your back (not very hard to do) and button the three buttons. A simple and neat way to dress. The bow could simple thin strips of cloth on the drab versions, and a wide showy sash for the happy yellow dress.)

So gorgeous!!! If Howl’s Moving Castle was in a specific time period, based on the background characters’ outfits, its more likely to be in the 1890s to early 1900s around the 1895 if I was picking a specific time period based on the silhouettes of the gowns with those huge sleeves and large floppy hats and the sweeping trumpet style skirts of the time.

also I think it is actually set in our world. the city Sophie is living in is said to be based off of colmar, then a German city (from 1871 on), now a French one again, because there is a poster howl and Sophie pass that says :" Mut un Willenskraft" (courage and willpower) and then when they're in Jenkins part (where the yellow house is at) everything is in English. so I think it would play in our world with magic in it.

Sophie's dresses are representative of her personal growth as a character. She believed that she was ugly and insignificant, destined for a life of mundane work. Hense her dresses were very plain. In the end once she over comes her curse and gains self confidence she dresses in a bright color with jewls and a fancy hat. In the movie the dress is yellow bc the director, M, used it to signify a person that was carefree and youthful. Also you see her step mother wear yellow in the beginning of the book when she is living the high life while making sophie do all the work in the hat shop. The book is definitely worth a read or listen as it goes into more detail and makes one appreciate the movie even more if possible.
