The longboard surfing takeoff is not something Iv'e put much time into. This was a mistake! In this video I discuss how the feet positioning on takeoff can have a major affect on longboard setup and cross stepping. Enjoy!

Hint: notice on your practice pop-ups your heel is in the air? Try to plant is on the board. To do this you will need to rotate your foot (toes) slightly outward (you will land on the inside of your foot -- the result is your back foot is immediately in complete contact with the board. Way more control as you start your fade (or bottom turn), especially in a late takeoff. -- It's a minor adjustment and muscle memory will make it easy.

Man, this vid is giving me flashbacks-used to surf NJ 20-ish years ago, and on 9/11 I surfed close to the break in this vid. Dawn patrol on clean, pumping, head-high swell from Hurricane Erin. Got too many screamers to count, and was so pumped I literally did a cartwheel on the beach when I got out. Didn’t know NJ could get so good. Then I got in the car to drive back to Mercer County for work, turned on the radio, and the world had turned upside-down while I was in the water. Great vid, tho. Just remember the weight forward pop-up also has its place, especially when you’re scratching to catch the wave early or the offshores are howling. Don’t be afraid to adjust your technique to fit the wave and conditions.
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 года назад
Wow that’s a surf session you’ll never forget! I think I was around 12 years old and I watched the 2nd tower get hit on tv. Wasn’t quite old enough to realize the magnitude of the situation but I remember my parents reaction. Yes, weight forward pop up is also very important. You gotta decide what you’re doing depending on what the wave is doing. I still want to learn the weight forward pop up where you basically pop up right to the nose haha!

I can't believe I just found your channel now! You have videos for all the issues I'm experiencing now (feeling stagnant, realizing I pop up too much forward but doesn't know how to fix it bc I would lose focus, unstable cross-step, rail catch water during cutback) - I will try work on these based on your tips!! Then eventually hopefully there will be a video on how to recognize the moment to walk to the nose haha. I'm always one step away because mentally it's hard for me to stay in the pocket area so I typically set up when it's too late. A lot of it is psychological but it's hard to get over that. Really appreciate and love these videos
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions Год назад
Thanks so much!! Yes these are all things that longboarders struggle with.. we're all in the same boat. Great idea on the video 'moment to walk to the nose'... i'll do this as a future video. Yes it feels very weird that we have to set up and cross step in extremely critical sections, but thats how it has to be. Try focusing on staying in the pocket through fading the takeoff possibly. Also, focus on 'rail engagement' through the whole cross stepping process. Every step you take should be focusing on keeping that rail engaged with the face of the wave

It contained so many things I'm trying to work on, especially the getting the weight back in the pop-up and its super helpful to think about the stage of the wave and the speed we're travelling in order not to come off the back of the board. Finally - loved the whole vibe of the video and chilled presentation - great camera work too.

Yes! The farther-back popup is a great tip. Almost every video on how to popup stresses getting your front foot up by your hands, but watching pro longboarders, they usually popup farther back. What I tell myself to do is leave the back foot pretty much where it is. The revelation about having to go faster before popping up is something I'll think about. I want to whip/pull that board around. Thanks, Brian. Stan Getz?

Great vid! I think hands positioning also helps to make it easier to pop up further back. If you push up from closer to your waist instead of beside your chest, it's easier than to use brute force to get further back. Also notice how joel tudor's thumbs are facing the nose (arms twisted almost 180°) when he's about to pop up. Noticed that in a few loggers as well. As for your backfoot, helps if you keep them planted at the tail, it will slide a bit forward when you pop up but it'll stay behind. When you complete your pop up your backfoot leg could be more bent (like drop knee turn) to set up the first turn. Its fun to watch your progression. Keep it up! 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 года назад
Thanks so much! Well said... Keeping your hands closer to your waist is something I figured out the other day practicing in my living room, really helps. I also see what youre saying in other longboarders how they keep their back foot planted at the tail during the whole pop up. I'll have to check out joel's thumbs.. never noticed that!

Love your videos and just had to laugh a bit because my “problem” always was/is that I am getting up to far in the back of my board. oh nice! Well there are many different ways to takeoff.. that's for sure
@billmcbreen4971
@billmcbreen4971 2 года назад
See if this doesn’t help you. Try catching waves without paddling. As the swell approaches raise the nose up towards the sky and gently use gravity to dip the tail deep so that the buoyancy force pops you up just at the moment the face of the swell lifts your tail. Use the momentum to pop to your feet. The more perfect the timing the mor effortlessly it is to pop to your feet. It took me a dozen waves or so to master this but wow once you do you can compete with the shot boarders in the shore breaks. Been surfing since i was 1964 still keep on surfing. Im 69 now. Recovery time is a bitch now. Lol!

Awesome John thanks! I ride a 9'6" board. When it comes to paddling, you should paddle as close to the nose as you can without nosediving on the takeoff. This may mean really lifting your chest up when your paddling. Also, some waves I paddle farther back on the board knowing that it's a later takeoff. Some waves I'll be really close to the nose because I know it's going to be a tough wave to catch. Keep tinkering with different positions till it starts to feel natural!

@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 года назад
Thanks Charlie! Hmm that sounds like a great video idea. However, I would need to do my research. From my experience, I would start with the properly sized board for you when it comes to Noseriding. So someone who is 130 lbs could surf a 9.0 - 9.2. If you’re 175 lbs I’d go for a 9.6 - 9-9. The best thing to do is to contact the board company your interested in and they can assist you in size. That’s what I did with both boards I’ve purchased an everyone was very helpful (Bing and COS)
@Psyched-Surf
@Psyched-Surf 2 года назад
Longboard size is dependent on a couple things. As mr. Longboard sessions said weight is a factor, also depends on what style of longboarding you want to do (performance, noseriding, screaming through mini tubes, etc.) and wave size you plan to surf it on. Definitely talk all of this over with your board builder

Also, make sure you look where you want to go at all times and never at your board. That could help with the takeoff and turning

I just got a 9’8” bing continental. You aren’t riding yours in this video but I wanted to ask how it’s holding up? I feel like I’m gonna ding that razor thin tail within a week.
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 года назад
Wow you're gonna love that board! I actually sold it to get the new board, but will likley get another in the future... maybe a little longer than my old one. It held up just fine, but I babied it as much as I could. The tail is so thin! But the only issues I had were pressure dings on the deck and that's normal. Throw it in a bag everytime and you'll be good to go

The best way to dry a wetsuit in a day is hang it inside out in a room with a dehumidifier on max.

Actually, I think a whole lot of it is in your head! - no, not a mental attitude, but positioning, your head is surprisingly heavy, AND it brings your shoulders and then chest into play, weight wise. If you can raise your head during take off, your hips are already closer to "underneath" that centre of gravity point. I see some of your scenes there where your neck is extended forward and therefore moving your centre of gravity is ahead of your hips, almost countering the hips forward effort you make, and it comes a step sooner too. Everything runs smoother and more naturally. Try it and see what you think.
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 года назад
Wow I think you're totally right! I do have a problem of hunching over while cross stepping which is the opposite of what you're supposed to do. Leading with my hips is something I keep trying to do, but it's tough. I'll try thinking of my head instead. Thanks!

5:33 that's not a normal popup, you can't push off your toes. normal popup is launching from the knees, which is what you're actually doing in the clips in the water
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 года назад
Yup, you're 100% correct. I'll be making a video on the pop up soon and in my research I found that out haha! I looked at my pop ups in the water and realized you never use your feet

Exercise: Try to Jump on the Ground from a height let's say ...1 Meter (3ft) but then instead of jumping with the Whole Body, first Make Yourself Smaller and jump with the Legs going first and your Upperbody stays at the Same Level. That's how a Pop'up in a takeoff can be done.
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 года назад
Oh very interesting, I'll have to give that a shot! Wonder if that could help with my foot positioning as well
@tonybeatbutcher
@tonybeatbutcher 2 года назад
@@LongboardSessions It's a bit like a "PopDown" instead like a PopUp. Pushing the legs down, working from UnderBody first, helps a lot on bigger sharper waves. But translating that to chiller longboarding waves makes your popup go more have style.

You're paddling two strokes too long loosing time ~ Take off angling into the wave and just start walking the nose on takeoff ~
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 года назад
Yes thats a definite possibility. But I disagree with the angling into the wave. Yes some waves call for that, but other waves need something different to try and hit the pocket (ie faded takeoff). That being said, I do need to try what you're saying more often. I see so many longboarders take off very angled and almost run to the nose during the pop up. That could be very beneficial on our quick jersey waves!
