There are differences in how you pop up on a longboard vs how you pop up on a shorter board. We're going to get to the bottom of it in this video. Enjoy!

I knew a guy. He was a stocky powerful dude who use to longboard professionally and rides 9’2-9’6 tri fin performance longboard, heavy glassed and heavy boards. Anyway I’ve never seen someone rip on a longboard like he does during Fall east coast hurricane season on Long Island. And he surfs off the back right over the tail and he says that’s the only way you can surf a longboard vertically, doing snaps’ very aggressive explosive top turns etc. like a shortboard. His boards have rocker though and I’ve never seen him walk his longboard. He also uses cutaway center fin with side bites. But it was incredible watch him charge overhead hurricane waves among shortboarders on his long ass board and surf top to bottom. He also lived in Hawaii for a while. It seems there’s also a certain style of longboard in specific to Hawaii. Those guys are use to good powerful rippable waves there’s and those waves seem to be made for back footed longboarding where you can have better control as you stated and really shred vertically up and down the face. Less trim less walking. Just aggressive longboard shredding. Usually those guys are also stocky and powerful, able to control a big heavy board in good waves.
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions Год назад
Sounds like the longboarding of the 90's. All high pros. Longboarders trying to ride the wave like shortboarders! What you're describing sounds a lot like phil rajzman style. Nowadays it's more of mix between the two styles. But those heavier stockier guys can rip like that! I don't have the weight for it haha
@LWLHP
@LWLHP Год назад
Those waves from 4:58 to 5:39 really show your improved style, that back foot pop up is good for control and setting yourself up for the line especially on really big surf days. UUmm your board wax still needs to be renewed, maybe a vid on waxing your board with different types of wax for different temperature water could be on the cards. Keep up the good work its inspiring for a lot of people, I often recommend to beginner's to view your vids.

Great form on the drop knee takeoff. I use it more as a stalling maneuver. It’s good to have different takeoffs so that each wave can dictate which one you use. If you decide how to takeoff when you park your car, then inevitably you will have some waves that don’t feel good.

I always had a good smooth pop up, so this technique really helps. Thanks for making it easy to break down.

Low or mid wave with some time, middle nice and easy, set my angle! On particularly big steep waves beyond what the rocker of my board can handle I'll pop up way back and then feel like I'm riding a skateboard off a loading dock!

I started paddle boarding when Laird started doing it on utube but never surfed but wakes- at the beach I could get knee up thats about it. Nailed the explanation about control back towards tail and used this pop up method to surf an inflatable several times now but I don’t think anyone could do it, I may only be capable due to my larger frame and size cause 11ft /6 » inflatable board is nothing for me where it is a whale for most. @LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions Год назад
Well, a smaller board makes almost everything harder. If you find it took difficult, keep improving with the 7'6 and suddenly the 6'7 will become easier. Small boards require good positioning and often pumping to stay with the power

Love the videos man! So surprised you never mention cross training on a longboard SUP! You guys are missing out, if you think about it, the only time you’re actually standing on a longboard is when you surf. When on a sup you’re balancing for hours. I went from longboarding to sup surfing and then back to SUP and longboarding and wow, longboarding progression was off the charts!
@LongboardSessions

@@LongboardSessions definitely, it’s interesting, switching to sup for a while just exposed me to so much more ride time on the wave, that when I went back to longboarding I already knew the take off angles, perfect positioning etc, and popping up was just simple. Dude, this video is so timely! I was literally watching some clips of pros long boarding this week and thinking "they are pros, why are they doing a 'beginner' pop up??". But after watching this video and trying it myself I realise that the drop knee pop-up isn't the same as the beginner 'climb up slowly' pop-up. It's a lot faster and in some ways more physical than the advanced pop-up cos instead of using potential energy to spring up (or, low-energy to climb up slowly) - you're trying to get your whole body back over your back foot in one quick motion!! Any advice on how this affects different take-off types (angled, faded, stalls etc.)?
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions Год назад
Yes exactly right! However, using the slope of the wave to let your board 'fall' down it makes getting your body over your back foot much easier. That's kinda what I mentioned in the video about letting the board travel down the wave first. It effects takeoffs differently that's for sure. Faded / Stalls it helps tremendously. Angled takeoffs are a different story. I would still use this pop for angled takeoffs potentially as long as I have time. If it's late, i'd go with my regular pop up

Hi, I've been following you for a while and I feel this video is the one that offers me the better chance to unlock new things in my surfing. Thank you. I've noticed that pop-up in random videos, but I didn't understand exactly what the movements were until now. Giving it a few try on the ground I'm worried about being really unbalanced at first. Both feet would be pointing straight forward. What are your thoughts on that? Can you elaborate a bit more? I'm a bit older than you and I've been longboarding for years, but just once a week! My progress has been slow but constant. I think I'm at a level similar to what you do, so I really relate to your videos, thoughts and suggestions. Thank you and keep it up!
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions Год назад
GREAT questions. Ideally you're feet are not pointed straight, but angled as much as you can. I know that's not easy tho. I'll tell you that it does feel unbalanced if executed at the wrong time. That's why I stressed having speed before you officialy pop up. If you're doing the turn while traveling down the face with speed, it's much more balanced. Do it to early and you look totally ridiculous haha! I have many shots of me losing my balance that didn't make the cut

Hi Brian, thx for this vid! I got a question. Just before you pop-up, do you arch your back? I saw a surf-vid where I got a nice insight. They explained that just before the pop up you should arch your back so that the wave pushes you. What I do (in the Netherlands, often mussy waves) is just the put my head a little down to my board so ( I think) I use gravity to catch the wave. What do you think?
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 11 месяцев назад
I think I may put my head down like you do, but it totally depends on the wave. If i'm having no trouble catching a specific wave, my back will be arched the whole time. If i feel like i'm losing it, my head might go down a bit as I dig deeper in the water for more paddle power.

What beach is this and what's the best time of the year to go there?
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 8 месяцев назад
One of the monmouth county beaches. Really anytime of the year is fine for longboarding.. but you gotta check the forecast before taking the trip hehe. We get good waves like once or twice a week .. maybe

Another reason your tail pop up is more effective is you are leaving your hands on the deck until your front foot is planted- much more stable.

You're so right about that! Theres no 'in between' moment

What would be your pop up when running front side?
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions Год назад
It depends on many factors like if the wave is standing up quick or If i need to fade it because it's slowing down

My board is a 9'6". I'd recommend that size or larger if you're looking for that more traditional feel. This of course depends on your height/ weight. I'm 5'4 135 lbs. My board might be slightly large for me.. but at this point that's how I like it

I do it this way all the time. Only difference is, I turn out my toes of my back foot, then slide it forward as necessary. Also in bigger waves, especially backside, like in this video, i initially place my front foot inside of the stringer, to hold the rail better. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iO6wQfLURmQ.html

Oh very interesting! I think on some of my better turns my front foot was on the inside of the stringer.. so you may be onto something there hehe

Standing with the balls of your feet, especially your back foot, will take you to a bad place. You will not be able to pop-up on a shorter board this way and it's a habit that will confuse your technique. Unlearning isn't possible unless you get dementia.
@crashmyzebra

Mate no, you can unlearn things for sure, also different things. Also I pop up without heal pressure on my back foot for sure it helps on a shortboard

The problem I face in Florida where I live is consistency. The waves here aren’t all that great for learning.
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions Год назад
Well it's kinda the same here TBH. Very short rides and very incosistent.. but that does make you better in other areas
