SPOILER ALERT: I have bought a LOT of cameras. Glad to have landed on the X100V finally though and looking forward to seeing what everyone else thinks of this AWESOME little camera. And wow, that continuous AF was NOT great! Had to leave it in as a cautionary tale...looks like it’s just AF-S for me here on out!

Very Nice shots in this video! I have a little story about the X100 V. I have been shooting a Sony A7 III for over 2 years and have been very happy with it. I used it for everything, Family, work, and fun shooting, although I wanted another camera that was easy to take with me and allowed me to focus on photography and not how many lenses I could get for it. The X 100 V fit the bill perfectly, So I was very excited to purchased one. Man this camera is beautiful! I shot with it and loved many of the photos I got from it but unfortunately it had a major deal breaker. The AF system failed me to many times. I thought maybe I got a bad copy so I returned it and got another X100V, the camera did the same thing. Although it focuses a good amount of the time it failed to focus to many times for me even on static subjects. Coming from a Sony system this was simply unacceptable specially when it cost me over $1500. I searched and asked through many Fuji forums but found that it's simply how this camera behaves. I decided that as much as I loved all it's other great features I could not deal with the sub-par AF. During this time Sony just released the A7C small compact camera with a Full frame sensor and IBIS. I decided to purchase the A7C and boy I could not be any happier! I paired it with a very compact Zeiss 35mm F/2.8 and I now have one of the smallest little power house cameras in the market. The A7C smokes the X100V when it comes the the AF, It can practically track a fly in mid air and keep focus, I can't say that I have even had a single failed focus with it. The images I get are amazing not to mention it's incredible video capability. All in all The A7C is one amazing camera for portability. I was very sad that I had to return the X100V but in the end with how competitive todays camera market is I could not accept it's flaws.

@@jebeq2007 Thanks for the feedback Jorge! I have to agree the A7C is AWESOME and the X100V's AF doesn't even come close to the performance on Sony's modern bodies. The A7C was on my shortlist when it was announced but I ended up deciding that the X100V was all I really needed; AF warts and all. I'm hoping one of these days we get a little firmware love for the AF from Fuji but I think its a physical lens limitation more than anything, especially compared to something like the XT4. Glad to hear the Sony is working for you and hope you keep up on staying creative with it! Its all about how the tool works for you and if it keeps you inspired at the end of the day.

Finally, someone who gets it. I sold all my gear for the X100V last year and went 9 months with just that camera. I not only had way more fun but made some of my best work in that period. But eventually I decided "no, I need to get back to a full professional ILC kit." I quickly realized that I hated being weighed down by the different choices, lenses, and options and "just one more lens" thinking. And that I've stopped caring about usefulness or profitability the number one driver of my art and sold it all again, haha. Going right back to the X100V, that addicting little camera.

This video hit hard. I have gone through the exact same G.A.S. and I am in the process (slowly but surely) of selling off my gear and pairing down to just this type of camera. I remember when I first started, just having "a camera" allowed me to do so much, but I ended up getting caught up in buying this or that for additional capabilities and found myself acquiring "capability" to do something but not actually doing anything. My inspiration dropped, by creativity dropped due to too many choices and my indecision as to what gear to use. So yea, thanks for this vid. You gained respect and a new follower. Thanks for being honest.

I did the same about 10 months ago. All of my Canon gear is gone, and I am shooting with just the X100V now. (I do have film cameras that I experiment with, but the X100V is my only digital option). My biggest worry when doing this was related to music photography. I do a lot of it and was worried that it might not be able to keep up in low light venues. But I have been blown away with how well it can handle darker stages without the best lighting. I still get incredible shots and I couldn’t be happier. I love that it’s compact and I can easily take it with me everywhere, and it doesn’t draw as much attention as dslr cameras do. That being said, it is a little tougher from a professional aspect, as a lot of clients associate BIG cameras with professional work, and may not understand that this small camera is capable of getting very similar results.

I got the V last year for the exact same reasons. It’s funny how easy it is to fall down the rabbit hole of chasing the perfect gear. It doesn’t matter how good my gear is if I’m not using it 🤦🏽‍♂️

I'm deep in this hole. I keep finding more and more equipment that "I need". Huh, it never ends. Currently scouting for the best way to use tilt shift on my Fuji X-T20 and X-T30. Last week it was all about converting the X-T20 to full spectrum. 🙄🙄

The 100V and 100F both have the capability to crop in the camera so it changes from the 23mm lens to a 35mm (FF equivalent 50mm), and then a 50mm (FF equivalent 70mm). Occasionally it's handy and easy to use. The macro has become a very close focus instead which is brilliant and removes the need for the button on earlier models. And there is the built-in flash to infill on sunny days, and a HDR selection which does what you would need to do in post processing. And there is more. . . . Very happy with mine too.

I have the X100V and the XT3 with 35mm 1.4, 18-55 and Victors 56mm 1.4. I’m starting the process of selling the XT3 setup and only having the X100V. I only really pick up the XT3 when I’m doing videos purely because the 18-55 is stabilised. From the sale of it I’ll get the TCL and a small Gimbal to make the little V a great video setup. I don’t do well with choice which I think is part of the reason I always reach for the V whenever I grab a camera. It truly is great!

This is the review I've been looking for dude. I am considering investing in a digital camera and this one is on my list of maybes. The thing I get a headache over is what you ran through in your "history". I'm a studio artist, not a photography major. I'm not a technical guy... honestly I check out over tech specs. I want to create and I want a film aesthetic... imperfect, grainy, subjective color etc. I own a few vintage film cameras and I want a digital that produces what they can. That's it. Your sample pics told me what I need to know.

I've been in the same boat for a while as well. Been through a lot of different gear. Had an X-T4, X-Pro1 and a bunch of lenses. Now I have the X-T4 with 16-55 + 50-140 duo for pro work and when I need maximum versatility. But for everything else, I bought the X100V and sold the X-Pro1 and the two X-mount primes I had. Now everything gets equal use and everything has a well defined purpose in my kit. Couldn't be happier.

Been there, done that. Bought my first camera (sony a6000 with sigma 30mm f1.4) used it for about 3-4 years, but wanted full frame. Sold it and then bought canon 6d mkii with 24-70 f2.8 and thought that was it, I won't need anything else, this is the camera that can do it all especially with this lens. Started using it and surprise surprise didn't like it at all, was actually using it less and less. Don't get me wrong, this setup was really good, just didn't enjoy using it and it made me lazy as a photographer. Then started looking for something compact that I can carry with me and takes decent images. Heard about fuji and their recipes. Saw the Fuji x100v and was like okay this is the complete opposite of what I was using before with a fixed lens. But every RU-vidr was saying how good it was and makes you grab it and go take pictures with it, so I gave it a shot. Sold the canon and got this one, and boy is it amazing. Best decision I've ever made.

Interesting video. It took me many years to figure out the same thing, less is more! When I go out I usually only bring two lenses and find for 90% of what I do that works. I know a lot of other photographers that just can’t seem to break the latest and greatest or the special lens that they’ve been waiting for. Update every camera like they do their iPhone. I’ve learned to slow way down and I get much better images because of it. It’s more important to train your eye than what equipment you have in your hands.

Your review might be a year old, but it was very helpful. I've got a Sony A6600 and several primes, but I want to simplify. I looked at the X Pro 3, but apart from the original Fuji 35mm 1.4 and 35.2 lenses, all the newer lenses are much bigger, which kills the compact form factor for me. Aesthetics matters to me, because if I'm not excited about the camera, I won't use it as much. The X100V kind of blows me away. And wow, minimum focus is like 4", and the images are amazing. Think I'm ready to sell everything and simplify.

Now I do not have to think about what lenses to bring etc. I love your photos - they are very inspirational.

I had an x100f for four years and loved it. Then thought, I think I need more lens choices. Traded the camera for a 16mm 1.4 (which is amazing btw) bought a X-T3, also amazing. Been shooting with that combo for a couple weeks, while inside my head an ongoing struggle of what lens I should get, oh and a bag to carry all this crap in. Then ended up getting a 35mm f2, took it out today and got some great images. But found myself switching lens to get a particular shot. Finally decided to put the 16 in the trunk and take a walk with the 35. That was a good decision. I messed up. I should have just traded the 100f in and got the V. Now they’re on backorder.

I've created some of my best shots using nothing more than an iPhone...unfortunately they are only crisp enough for an instagram post....but it goes to show when you dump the gear, you can be there for the moment and simply focus on your composition.

Sweet, nice video! I've been using the X-T20 for a couple of years now. I am thinking about switching to the X100V for that extra simplicity, I'll probably wait for a next revision though. That simple photography is where I feel the real fun lies. Anyway, this is a really well explained video on the X100V. Because of that and since I'm looking forward to what you will do with that camera, I subbed!

Basically same story here. Sold all my Canon Gear including a Sigma Art 18-35mm (an absolute beauty of a lens but heavy AF!). I couldn't be happier with my X100V

Yes it is. Always had to determine which lens to take with me when going out. I will end up taking a few adding to the weight. Because of that as time went on I stopped taking the camera with me as it became non-enjoyable. In contrast the x100v goes with me everywhere. It made me love photography again!

I loved the GAS Vs: "getting out there and start creating" narrative at the beginning. My GAS years took me from a Nikon D700 all the way to a Phase One IQ180 with a collection of Schneider lenses. Most all of that is gathering dust as I've reverted back to medium format film (Provia 100F on Mamiya 7 and RZ67). I've been on the fence about going back to a small digital for daily carry, and the X100V is on my (very) short list. Thanks for the vid.

I have an X-100T and love it and am saving my pennies to purchase my 100v. I really can see why you moved away from Cannon to Go to Fuji. I left Olympus to come to Fuji when Olympus Sold their Photo side of the business.

enjoyable video and I'm with you on the gear front, chasing that look means loads of different primes for me, so the most enjoyable camera I have to use is the x100v for it just feels like it's missing nothing. if it's in my pocket I feel there's nothing I can't shoot with it.

I'm familiar with your journey. I have way too much gear. I'm in 4 different systems. It's just stupid. Oddly I find my iPhone is helping me reconnect with the simplicity and joy that I crave. I'm pretty sure it's time for me to dump my gear and pivot to something that is more enjoyable.
