As someone who sold medieval weapons and armor, they need to be kept oiled. It most likely had extra metal oil incase it took way to long and tended to dry out and rust. They actually should be oiled after every use as the oils in your skin can eat away at the metal. You can actually leave fingerprint on the metal, sell it, someone else buys it and uses it in a crime, you can be the first suspect because your fingerprint is etched into the metal. So always keep it oiled and wear gloves when handling.

Oil actually protects metal, so make sure to oil that armour regularly. Why d you think spartans were known to "bathe in oil"? It's not because they literally bathed in oil but because they spent a lot of time polishing and oiling their gear.
