I started off at a dealership as a lube tech. My starting tools consisted of a US General roll cart, 200 piece Husky mechanics tool box, and hand me down wrenches. Got me pretty far for about 5 months until I got moved to a helper doing front end work.. then I got more tools. Started buying off the tool truck (Snap On) to help build credit, traded in my harbor freight box for a real nice Snap On Power Drawer and the best thing. I still buy some tools from HF and off the truck only if I need it. Been at the dealership for almost a year now and I still use my husky tool set more than my snap on. Goes to show even cheap tools can take you pretty far
@PARABOLA1966
@PARABOLA1966 2 года назад
Snap On has always been overrated, mate. They're nice, but there's many out there that wayyyy more affordable, and do the job to earn you a paycheck. I say this because I wrench on commercial aircrafts, and we see more US General toolboxes on the hangards and flightline, than any other toolboxes, period. The Snap On guys have spent thousands of Dollars on their gear, and they have their toolboxes super clean all the time, which in a way reflects the mindset, and hence, the paranoia with owning it.

DISCLAIMER* I’m an employee at Harbor Freight, I wanted to mention that unfortunately our impact wrenches are NOT on a lifetime guarantee, you have 90 days to exchange or return the item, HOWEVER, Most of the time if a customer comes in and they are past the manufacture warranty, we will exhchange the item out evenly for an exact model IF you purchase the extended warranty moving forward. ONLY Sockets, wrenches, pliers, hammers, most measuring units, and screwdrivers are on a life time warranty for FREE.

Cool. The hf impact extensions are very good. You can also add a set of 3/8 impact wobble extensions for around ten bucks. I also like the Pittsburg 3/8 long handle flex ratchet which can also do double duty as a 3/8 breaker bar. Perfect for tighter drain plugs.

Ive heard great things about Icon brand tools. I am a hobby mechanic that just works on my cars when I get board. I dont think I can justify the extra cost when the Pitsburgh brand tools are working great for me. As a pro mechanic, I can see why you're getting the better stuff
@donaldfinley2829

My go to ratchet is my 3/8 long handle comfort grip flex head pittsburgh. Love that one more than my locking flex head shorter snap on. The dead blow is also a go to. I do prefer my snap on mid length sockets though. The green hf chisels are good. The pittsburgh 1/2 impact sockets are what everybody in the shop uses.
@willb3018
@willb3018 3 года назад
I bought the Icon swivel head ratchets. Use them and like them a lot. Used a 20% Icon coupon....which made the price OK. While Icon certainly is a cut above the standard HF fare quality wise, generally I do think that they may be bit overpriced for that upgrade depending on the tool....but especially the tool storage. While the Icon storage products quality certainly is better, the US General stuff is one of the best HF values IMHO. I do agree that new techs just starting out are smarter to avoid the tool truck stuff and get as close to a full set of necessities as you cen. Over time, upgrade as needed and as finances permit. Your personal mental health and welfare will be better for it and the vehicles or whatever you work on won't know the difference.

When I started on working on equipment I used my grandpas old craftsman tools. Some of the sockets are more then 3 decades old. He used them for basic farm machine maintenance but since I’ve been using them they’re stout. Compared to some of the new craftsman’s made in China.

They’re not over priced. Everything icon has is made by a company that also makes tools for matco. Ratcheting wrench set from icon is 160. The same exact set with the same manufacturer from matco is 450.

Very awesome video. I'm not a HF kinda guy but it's always good to see what they are offering. Seems like their quality is going up a lot these days. Also be really careful with raffles. The U.S. is hella hella strict about raffles vs. lotteries and private parties are not allowed to run lotteries. I ain't a lawyer, but I know that stuff gets hecked real quick.
@poonbandit9924

I think especially for just standard deep and shallow sockets, screw drivers, and even the ratchets icon is pretty solid stuff. I’ve got my bougie all tool truck box at work and a two bay mac box full of harbor freight, Carlyle, Milwaukee and dewalt brand stuff for home. I can get the same amount of work done with the cheaper stuff. Take it as you may.

I have torn up two 1.5 pound HF dead blows. They replaced them no questions. One I was banging the crap out of radius arms on a ford and the bolt cut the face out. The other I was useing doing trailer bearings the grease soaked into the dead blow and made it brittle. One cold day in the 30s I was trying to hit something and it started chipping off.

Then I bought the 301 piece tool set from harbor freight for my trailer. My advice would be to buy that 301 piece set for only $200 and then get yourself some of the other specialty tools. If you are worried the tools in that set arnt very good than you should know that the only tool I have broken is the ratchet and they are cheap in the set.

Ya but since you bought them half off chances are you can sell them for around same price you bought them for. On the point you made of fine toothed sockets, I picket up the Gear Wrench 120 XP Ratchet Set, 1/2, 3/8, 1/4 & 3/8 stubby. Besides being all extra long, the 120 teeth will allow you a 3 degree swing, you can barely feel a click, sounds more like a bee. They offset 2 - 60 tooth paws so you have big teeth making a solid grip. Love 'em.

I have 2 of those Braun flashlights, one for my Toolbox and one for my truck, they are awesome, I love how they are rechargeable so your not constantly buying batteries for them and how they have a magnetic base and they are totally adjustable! I can't believe they are $40 now, I got my first one for $26 with a coupon and my second one for $32 without a coupon. Their magnetic trays are also great, they are cheaper than anywhere else, I have a bunch of them from the 4" ones to the 3" ones and even a big rectangular one and they have coupons all the time where you can get a magnetic tray for free when you buy something. I also like their deadblow rubber mallets, I used to have some Matco ones that cost a lot more and weren't any better. I almost forgot, I got my Daytona Jack from there and it's the best jack I've ever had and it was only $180, I'm sure a snap-off one would have been $500 or more,, I didn't get their "top of the line model" but I got what should be their top of the line model, it has the lowest profile and the highest lift height plus it has a foot pedal it's great it'll even lift so high that it'll even lift my 2500HD 4wd Chevy 4 door short bed with a Durumax diesel and a 6" lift and 37" tires off the ground! I got mine before they had different colors so it's orange but I love it and probably would pick orange again cuz it's easy to see so I have no problem finding it in the garage unlike my old gray one.The Bauer 1/4" hex driver is meant mostly for screw bits and running screws etc. not sockets it doesn't really have the power to remove anything but maybe just very small bolts and nuts, they make 3/8" and 1/2" impact guns specifically for nuts and bolts. Next thing you need to get is one of those huge Icon tool chests lol! Great video I really enjoyed it!

I know this is an old video. The only thing I'd add instead of the 18:08 Doyle screwdriver set, I'd get a Doyle 6-in-1 Ratcheting Screwdriver. Sometimes you're in tight places and you need a Phillips where a standard Phillips screwdriver won't fit. If you're not locked into harbor freight, I'd recommend the Husky 6-in-1 from Home Depot; It is the only multi-screwdriver I've had that keeps a Phillips and a Flat-head on the same side for easy access. The 3/8 and 1/4 holes are also convenient for undoing hose clamps! For $8.99 before tax, I think it's a pretty good deal! Thanks again for posting your video and sharing with us!

Impact grade sockets aren’t actually harder than chrome sockets or less prone to cracking. They often have thicker walls which make them more durable but they are actually a softer metal. This is so that after extended use the socket wears down rather than slowly rounding the anvil of your impact gun. Sockets are cheaper than an impact gun.

Best advice for starting a tool collection is buy cheap to start. When something breaks then you have the justification to buy a more expensive tool to replace it. Because if you broke it you clearly use it a lot.

I have random tools from Harbor Frieght. They are great for what they are. Not all are worth the money but a lot are. I personally prefer Kobalt from Lowes, plus I get my 10% military discount there on everything I purchase. But I'll snatch a good deal up at Harbor Frieght in a quick second!

I ended up just buying a husky tool set to start myself off. Wasn't a bad choice tho the tekton brand is what I'm purchasing next. Solid tool brand for the money.

Pretty sure the reason icon tools resemble snap on is cause harbor freight bought snap on I watched a video explaining this also some of the batteries for the power tools are interchangeable with matco and Dewalt

When I became a heavy equipment tech, I had tekton stuff, icon wasn't around yet then. But definitely didn't go wrong.

Tekton has my favorite design for wrench pouches, they make alot of good tools. I love all their pliers and there as good as all my made in the USA S&K pliers. Can't go wrong ordering off their website cause you make a account get free shipping 10% back every purchase.

Icon tools are the exact same as snap on, they are both made on the same machines in the same factory as Snap-op. Basically Kabo tools makes those, snap ons, mountains and a few others. So you are buying Snap on when you buy Icon.

Snap is cool cause of the life time warranty and they replace broken tools with no questions asked other tool trucks ask to many question that’s what I like about snap on

Icon's are great for the money. I ran with Icon sockets 1/4 drive and 3/8 drive deeps and shallows for the first year I was a euro tech. I ultimately ended up upgrading to legit snap on flank drives socket sets and retiring the icons to home duty. After my 13mm's started to wear from a common job and rounding off fasteners.

I have that sledge. And my buddy has the 40oz snapon hammer I find I like the snapon better hits harder can hit a smaller area and transfers less vibrations 🤷‍♂️. Still haven't bought the snapon one though🤣
