Soo many channels do massive UniFi installs. My main tips to beginners: 1) analyse your needs (don’t blindly follow or copy someone else’s setup); remember that needs ≠ wishes 2) figure out your budget 3) if out of funds: focus on the essentials (you can always upscale later) 7 years ago, I started with an EdgeRouter and an UniFi access point. Later, I added a 8-port switch and then two five-port switches. The controller is in Docker on a Synology. Network (no camera, phone, access) focus. It just works. No restarts needed.

I love that you are doing this with Unifi. On the face of it, the idea of buying myself into an ecosystem which may end up meaning that only certain components would work with other components, or having to pay for extra licences for cameras (if that's the case), will be really interesting to see. Your unvarnished, unbiased opinions will be most important ; far too many youtubers are selling their souls these days to flog stuff so, take the high road with your opinions, please.
@nascompares

Don't worry, I will! I can comfortably say that no single brand actually likes me fully! Why do you think no one else actually compares NAS? It's because it's lose-lose if you are reliant on the patronage of a brand. That said, cannot please everyone...just read the comments! Cheers for the positive words man, I won't let you down
@IntoxicatedVortex
@IntoxicatedVortex 3 месяца назад
Yes, its often hard to skip out of the ecosystem "lock in", however, it is a bit of a double edged sword. If you avoid the ecosystem play you then end up building around what would be the lowest common denominator that's between the devices. On the flip side, if you buy into the ecosystem you get all of the top end benefits of that but you then very susceptible to how they choose to do that. There's no one-size fits all answer to that. Personally, I have been extremely happy with my implementations being on UniFi and DSM. Sure there are downsides for both, starting with the over all cost base both put you into, but once you're accepting of that, the benefits of the over all experience far outweigh the small cost difference. When you spend "with purpose" the cost differences aren't as big as you think. For me though it really comes down to how you value your time. Like you though I'd like to see most from this channel is that they keep their opinions their own. What I would like to see from them is a bit more of a flexible viewpoint when products are reviewed. That is, doing it from the perspective of who the product is for. For instance, reviewing a DS3622xs+ for the type of buyer for which is it targeted as opposed to even targeting it at "me" (my RS1221+ is way more than I realistically need).

Really looking forward to your reviews on UniFi. Not just from a UniFi NAS on the horizon perspective (although that helps), however the entire ecosystem. So very powerful and scale able. I’ve bought into it over the last few years for all, was right on the precipice of buying the NVR Pro as my UDMPRO camera space is not enough and I’ve moved my Synology NAS to a new location. If they kill two birds with one stone and update the NVM Pro into a NAS that could be really cool. Anyhow, very much looking forward to your views on the whole shebang - good luck!

Good move! Yes, there are a lot of networking channels on RU-vid, some even specializing in UniFi, but another objective voice is always appreciated. I, myself, have been increasing dipping my toes into the UniFi environment. When I arrived, the school I support (volunteer) was running four Ubiquiti Access Points (good, but not great coverage) and the control software hosted on a Windows 2019 server (not ideal). I've already added one Mesh AP for outside coverage (with three more on the way), and a Cloud Key+ console (far superior). My next step will be to replace our very old Cisco 50 port switches with two newer (but still used) Ubiquiti switches and a new Aggregation switch. I look forward to hearing more.

I jumped into Unifi about 6 months ago. Things I'd have appreciated knowing beforehand: the buying experience (in the UK, direct from Ubiquiti) was poor, the postal packaging was poor, the delivery was slow. The warranty reads very badly and I really, really hope I don't have to use it. The range and signal strength of the wifi access points through UK brick/block walls is far greater than I'd expected - the Unifi designer site assumes that brick = lead. The UDM-SE was very difficult to get into a standard rack, as it seemed very slightly too wide. The stability of it all once set up is very good, and the user experience is excellent, but I'd still like to understand whether the Ubiquiti premium is really worth it over other products with comparable functionality. I'd also like to understand whether the cameras are really worth the huge premium over Reolink.

I would like to say international shipping is very hard to begin with. Without following the full tracking details & updates from UniFi its hard to tell what the wait really was for. Most of the times its due to customs. The UniFi AP's are baller, We've only had issues with a few but UniFi's warranty replacement with UI Care was extremely easy to get the AP's replaced. My company tries to buy for UniFi directly but most of the time they are out with certain products so we use B&H instead for those products. Can you explain what UniFi Premium is? I've never heard of this & been in the space for a couple of years now. For the Cameras its all going to come down to your needs & requirements. With UniFi their whole purpose is to have a unified system. The protect application works with the access application so you condense 2 products into 1 system. Their cameras are actually on the cheaper end compared to most vendors. The fact that they are going to continue support for all of their devices is a lot more to say about them compared to other vendors. I used to implement Reolink systems but that has shifted to UniFi for the ease of setup & reliability. I can't find the video off the top of my head but someone made a comparison video between the 2. I would also like to add most NVR software require licenses for each camera to be added while UniFi does not.

@@nitrogarbo1589 by "UniFi Premium" they mean the difference in cost, "a sum added to an ordinary price or charge."
@Egirk
@Egirk 3 месяца назад
@@nitrogarbo1589 Thanks for the reply! The "premium" I mentioned is just the fact that Unifi products are generally considered to be relatively expensive, so I'd love to have the NASCompares perspective on whether that expense is worth it. With regard to the cameras, I was looking at outdoor cameras. It seemed that all the Unifi ones that were truly weather sealed were vastly more expensive than Reolink. The Unifi ones generally said in their specs that they needed to be under a minimum 600mm overhang, which in the UK would be unusual on most buildings. A standard soffit would maybe be half that. For setup & reliability, I'd have to agree with you. I really enjoyed setting mine up, and it's all been rock solid so far. I'm very pleased with my Unifi setup, but I really appreciate NASCompares and their even handed reviews, so I'm very much looking forward to getting their views.

Please try multicast IGMP with querier on the Unifi switches. See how well the IGMP works and if it uses a Querier. The querier is basically just something that asks the clients if they're still watching that specific IPTV program (For example) and if they aren't it will terminate the subscription, stop the multicast stream.

I bought a unify 7 for home use and my pc couldn't recognize it so had no choice but to use the mobile app as the controller. Only way to transfer to desktop controller is factory reset but then you need an active wifi network to join and since desktop controller will not recognize it until it has already been accepted to the network, I'm stuck with the mobile app. Kind of a pain but at least it works. The other problem is that when I changed the wifi password on the mobile app, It locked me out of the wifi network so I had to factory reset. Good thing I kept my old wifi router so that I could setup another wifi network so that the Unify 7 could join again. I am an amateur with these products so please let me know if I am missing something. Otherwise it would be nice if Ubiquiti made things a bit easier for people like me who wanted to run the AP in local mode.

Very exciting. I have been using UniFi for almost 10 years across multiple sites and it’s been brilliant. Things to compare. Stability. I used to run a lot of “pro” (like high end ASUS etc) but most of it was unstable needed to be rebooted once a week to keep it running properly. Support. How long with it gear be supported for. Some of my UniFi gear has been over 8 years. Brought a Cisco small business router, 2 weeks later they EOL it. That stopped my Cisco buying days. Management. How good is the UI to manage it? Can we give a complete overview of your website? where does the UI run? Home or cloud Features: firewall, vpn , vlan etc Cost: goes with out saying but also ties in with how long it will be supported for. Performance: how quick is it? What about traffic over vlan’s? Firewall speed. Range: what types of switches, firewalls, WiFi access points etc to they have Needles to say but I have been very happy with the above for UniFi

Being old school I avoid the Dream Machine range, for all sorts of reasons, Dream Machines try to be all things to all people, this is never a recipe for excellence, gateways have enough to do without adding poorly implemented switch functionality, PABX management, video management, building security, et al. Consequently I use a UXG-PRO paired with a Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus for network management. I wire everything that doesn't move and place APs in each area that requires WiFi service - avoid chasing range at all costs, The in-wall APs are very convenient. Never use default values for anything, they are all rubbish; so use switch port profiles, declare all VLANs to be passed by a port explicitly, similarly configure APs explicitly, turn the TX volumes down as much as is compatible with good service. Finally, don't use default values.

Unifi gear is expensive BUT as you become comfortable with how they do things it becomes easier to use. Mostly it works quick and easy and gives you access to more complexity. It is not high end in some aspects BUT it works for the majority of use cases people have. Unifi Network is better served using ‘default’ network for managing all of the unifi gear and a second and more networks for all of your different devices such as users, cameras, IOT, and such. Unifi Protect is better served in areas outdoors and indoors just about anywhere. The AI features in the G4 and G5 line is much improved over the years as the G3 and older did not have it. Cheers

Which is why they are ideal for cameras as the data needs to be written fast to the drives. Granted I've never used ssds for that reason due to the fact that you need endurance when it comes to read & writes which ssds don't normally provide

$5,000 is a steep cost to entry for networking and mediocre cameras. Hopefully they get you a discount or the videos are popular. Unifi seems to be more like a cult that will insist "ONLY" their branded products are best. (Similar to Apple fans), never looking or considering another brand is better at a particular networking task or security camera options.

It's all VERY 'apple' yeah...but I want to fully explore the eco system and weigh it up. Notwithstanding the fact they do seem to make bloody good switches in my experience, I haven't gone deep enough personally (and indeed professionally) on their surveillance products. Expect some long, dull, but hopefully amusing content on this soon!

I was initially looking at unifi but ended up going with tplink access points to upgrade my wifi from a shitty router to full coverage with APs. Running the controller software on a synology nas and couldn't be happier. Dont remember what the unifi system was gonna cost but at 80 bucks a pop on these tplink points, no controller required, and using the poe switch i already had, im very happy with the cheap route i went. I think for a lot of people the idea of going full unifi everything just feels like overkill, and tbh i dont actually know how much unifi gear i would have needed to get everything running.

Hmmm, been following your channel for over a year now and I have learned a great deal about the NAS world. Your channel helped me understand what NAS I needed to select when the time came to buy. You have a great channel...stay on focus. If you are exploring the Ubiquiti gear for comparison purposes, eg: Protect vs Surveillance Station, that's great. Just don't branch too far off what you do...there are other channels that are VERY focused on Ubiquiti and some it it very well. You'll be hard pressed to keep up with them. That said, there is a rumor that Ubiquiti is releasing a NAS soon. Would like to see you do a deep dive comparison to any other NAS you feel would be a matchup! And another thing...I miss the "Seagulls!"

Can you explore the optimal setting to use to connect a Mac to a server at 10gb using the aggregation switch? Jumbo frames or whatever really needs to be done to get top speeds to a Qnap nas with a 10gb port or even faster. Since you have the aggregation pro maybe you can see just how fast you can network a nas to a pc or Mac in real world usage. Is there a bottleneck somewhere that makes it’s so it doesn’t make sense to go with a 2-3 tiered system. Stuff like that would differentiate you from the other channels that do UniFi setup stuff.

If you're actually in the new set, and this is what we get to see you in ... sure, no problem ... but you have to fix the lighting, and the colour toning. Find lights and a post colour space setting, that dont look like a c rate movie and lock it in. Best ask the advice of a nearby pro if you have one about. This one ... really doesnt look good.

I can say right now (hours after this video was filmed) it IS really user friendly, but my tinkering brain is already feeling too streamlined...if you like customisation, it will feel limiting. But I cannot fault how insanely smooth initialisation between parts has been so far. Fair play to them

Love the Unifi stuff - the  of the networking world, and these days, equally expensive 😬! We recently finished building our house and being brick and mortar, it's definitely more difficult to get ubiquitous wifi access throughout the house. But alas, I have helped several friends with theirs and love the options these days - there really is something for every deployment type and budget. Looking forward to your content on this and love the Studio look 👀👍🏻!
@nitrogarbo1589

Thats the part I love about UniFi is the fact that there really is something for each type of deployment. Also if it gets harder to place their AP's around the house you could look into using their mesh system, or Wi-Fi extenders as well. Also UniFi is cheap compared to any other vendor that sells networking equipment to businesses. I understand you're saying for home but UniFi is more tailored towards businesses, so you do need to keep that in mind. I'm also all for the license free & monthly subscription free their products are.

I like their networking offerings and use them lots for my clients, easy to self-host a controller or buy one if client has no server. Not a huge fan of their cameras as they are locked into the ecosystem of using their NVR's only when they could have easily been designed to just be an IP camera that's platform agnostic.
@nitrogarbo1589
@nitrogarbo1589 3 месяца назад
When you are using UniFi you are buying into their ecosystem of a unified system. People complain about not being able to use it with 3rd part NVR's why would you? Most NVR software require you get licenses for each stream/camera you add which increases to cost of UniFi's implementation cost. The NVR's that don't require licenses are typically slower, less polished, & don't provide as many features or options as unifi or any other nvr provider out there.

Excited to hear your take on the UniFi setups. Once you’re done with the standard UniFi everything setup, might I suggest you also try out various UniFi plus non UniFi parts? I’m fairly certain there are quite a few of us out there thinking that their pure routers are reasonably priced (given the feature set and usability) but the access points are a bit expensive. I’m using a combo of their router with TP Link Deco access points and the connectivity is quite good (without the full manageability of the entire system due to unmanaged switch and non UniFi APs) and the overall cost is manageable. Upgrade paths (which UniFi component to start with) while reusing existing gears would be interesting as well (again, for the rest of us who need to manage cost).
