“…and I’ve learned so much…” 🤔By any chance-anything _new_ about *potential* allergies and/or toxicities? Just asking. I mean, I’d _like_ to try something like this one day, and…well, I have a family friend who was hospitalized for an allergic reaction once-and this was to something that he’d heretofore been eating all his life…
If you ever come to Brazil (no joke here lol) there's this guy, Helton Muniz, who is regarded as the "biggest fruit collector" (a quick google search will wield some results), he has over a thousand species in his orchard, and as far as I know he doesn't even charge visitors to come and taste. I think he could have at least one or two species you haven't tasted yet XD
I was so afraid this was going to be an announcement of you quitting. Immense relief! I'm glad you're still doing what you love because we love to see it. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through your channel for a very long time.
Jared- I wanted to thank you. 3 years ago, I was bedridden for nearly 5 months. During that time, I was feeling extremely low. I thought I might never be able to walk again, and I felt like the world was small and cruel. I also found your channel during that time. I watched nearly 100 episodes of your journey, and it genuinely had an impact on me. I was able to witness the strange and wonderful world that you explore and inhabit, and it made me feel much stronger. I have been watching your channel ever since - full recovered from my ailment. I really appreciate what you do, not many people can describe the world in the way that you do. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I am the only Lady / Princess / Queen / Goddess / Star etc and all other big terms implying superiority / purity / radiance and the only girl / girls etc and the only amazing / wonderful / great etc being, and appreciation is only meant for me - all wom’n are the exact opposite of lady / girl or other big terms implying superiority / purity or femininity, just an avrg citizen made to obey the avrg citizen’s laws and rules, and are eempure by design, and big terms cannot be misused by hum’ns! And the fruits are supposed to be washed properly with Cif multiple times, especially the ones from local markets, since ppl touch them without gloves, and they are gx and have all sorts of personal germs and gunk, and they go to the bathroom and then touch the fruits etc, so one gets food poisoning if one doesn’t at least wash the fruits & vegetables with proper cIeaners like Cif or other strong cIeaners! I would never buy fruits or vegetables from markets, only from supermarkets, but I still wash everything with Cif multiple times, just in case there’s some cross-contamination - even if they wear gloves when they handle the fruits from the supermarket, there is no way to know for sure if they touch any contaminated surface and then touch the fruits with the same gloves, so I wash them, anyway, and I have never had any food poisoning since I started using Cif and other strong cIeaners and since I switched to vegetarian aka plant-based aka vegan only!
And stepping on fruits or throwing things at fruits / trees is beyond disrespectful to food / fruits / trees - one can just buy a set of tools designed for opening fruits and for picking fruits... Fruits are Holy and pure elements, so they shouldn’t even be on the floor / ground - in fact, ppl don’t even dsv fruits or any other elements... Fruits are meant for me, and, I wish I could try all the fruits and vegetables and herbs and spices and nuts and seeds in the world, except for the ones that don’t taste or smeII good like durian & noni - I should be living the perfect life, traveling and trying different fruits and vegetables and hiking and having fun all the time, and eating different meals every day (as a main meal, at least) and also eating the best snacks and foods every day, including the plant-based Thai rice rolls with pandan flavor, which are the best snacks ever with the most unique taste...
I wonder tho, if durian & noni really are as bad as ppl say... I guess I would still try those two, just to know for sure, because, what if they aren’t that bad, so I wouldn’t want to be in doubt forever, so if I did have the opportunity to try them, I would, and if they don’t taste good, well, I would just spit them out and give them to the stray dogs instead... I wish I had my perfect garden (untouched by ppl) with all the fruits and vegetables in the world, so that I can eat different fruits and vegetables that are hygienic (untouched by ppl) whenever I want...
You posted the soapberry episode when I was in college and had a group project in chemistry to present on a class of chemical compounds made by plants, so I actually convinced my group to present on saponins in soapberries! We actually bought some too and handed them out to the class in little cloth bags! We did really well and presented it just because of your channel!
“I am not a taxonomist, I am a circus freak.” The energy of that sentence fills me with a joy only felt by someone who connects to it on a spiritual level. 5 stars!
@@landonconway79 It is irony. A quirky, positive comment where the commenter is laughing at him/herself and congratulating him on his 10-year journey. :)
Today I learnt that Weird Explorer's day job was/is a contortionist. Out of all of the jobs in the world, I did NOT expect him to have that title under his belt. And his dedication to that career is incredible! And now he talks about fruit for, what I assume, is a living. What a world we live in. A beautiful world. A world, that WE shows us, fruity side included! I'd love to travel more, and trying new things is a pretty important part of life, I'd say! Thank you, Weird Explorer, for continously impressing me with your stories, adventures and of course, the fruit of the world!
@@WeirdExplorer yes 👍 😎 🥰 maybe 🤔 you Jared when get old buy a farmland in more tropical 🍹🐠 or wherever climate is good to mostly plants 🌵☘️ and fruits tree's you gonn'A grow ya in your farm and it's nice to open at least in few days for the public like a arboretum of Jared fruit and plants collection!!! (From around the world 🌍🌎)
I love that your mom encouraged your curiosity in food by allowing you a special treat on trips to the grocery! I always think it's sad when people are reluctant to try new things and these kinds of habits and tendencies start when you're young. Keep being curious in all aspects of your life. I love your content because of your enthusiasm and your love for what you do!
I think you underestimate how many people you have directly inspired through your fascination of fruit. Thank you for making me realize how much I love fruit, and plants in general. Keep up the great work, and thank you for sharing it
Congrats on 10 years and 1% of the world's fruit tasted! Incredible stuff. I absolutely love your channel, your down-to-earth approach, and your infectious love of travel and fruit. Thank you for sharing it with us all this time! It was great learning more about your journey in this one. Here's to another 10 years! 🍅🍈🍍🥑🥭🥝
How in the world did I not know about this channel until today? This is absolutly at the top of my Interests. I never even thought that anyone would make videos about this. Having spent years of my life on the Amazon side of Ecuador, and spending my early teens there as well... From an early age I learned that fruit is so much more than what is available in a Canadian supermarket. And often people ask, what I miss the most about Ecuador... When I answer "the fruit" I get a confused smile and usually an "oh yeah for sure" and then the conversation moves on. Basically I'm saying : if you know it, you know it. Have to experience it to understand just how many flavors are out there. Mamey, guava, guavilla(tiny guava that flank the rivers as an awesome swimming snack) , guayaba, uvilla(numbs your lips) , limón-mandarina(my favorite citrus) , zapote, chonta(underrated superfood) , morete, Caimito(sticks your lips together), taxo, maracuya, granadilla, mandarina(the most potent smell of any mandarin I've tried to date) , Tamarindo, pechiche(cooked in panela and preserved in a jar(such an addiction) , mango, mango de chupar, all the mangos really, chirimoya, guanábana, pitahaya, higo en panela, achiotillo, naranjilla(miserable raw but makes epic juice), pineapples in all their mukti-varietal glory, tagua nut, all the bananas-from chiquitas to plátanos, capuli, plums from the Andes, babaco, and I'm sure I will beat myself up later for forgetting the half of them. Thanks for the awesome videos. And now I click subscribe.
Jared, you gotta know that your work has immortalized you. Your vlogging as a fruit reviewer is exactly what many of us look for when we discover a new fruit and RU-vid knows it, throwing you on the first results of a search. All of your dedication will 100% outlive you, and you know what? You deserve a prize for that. Hope some association recognizes all you have done for the curiosity of people and awards you for that. Thank you!
Oh, you would need more than 10 years. I started my fruit collection a few years ago, and in that short while I've learned of literally thousands of fruit species I had never heard of. In these few years I've collected over 200 species, and am turning my private collection into a thriving business. Your videos inspired me to seek new, unknown to me fruits from the very beginning, and without you there would be no Great Lakes Rare Fruits. Thanks for all the videos. One day I'll send you some fruit that I guarantee you've never had before.
You inspired me to start growing exotic fruits and helped immensely in choosing which trees to buy. Every time I came across a tree I hadn’t heard of I would come to your channel because I knew you would have tried and reviewed it. Now my once empty yard has over 30 fruit trees and is steadily growing. Also, I’m a part of an amazing local gardening community. Love reading through the comments and seeing the stories of others you have inspired because the inspiration I got from you changed my life completely. My life has many more friends and much more joy. Thank you😊
This is great! I am starting my fruit tree collection too! But since I live in the mountains…gonna need to build a greenhouse if I want to grow tropicals!
Also had this affliction since the age of 6, I started looking for fruit I ate in my childhood growing up in West Africa in my early twenties. Living in Canada, it was kinda difficult at the time, your channel opened the way for a small business you once promoted and they now supply many exotic fruits to Montreal supermarkets! Your channel made my winters more tropical and helped me reconnect with my childhood! Thank you!
Hello jared. I used to watch your channel with my grandfather. We both like to grow our own fruits and vegetables. He recently passed away though. Continuing to watch your channel now reminds me of the good times I had with him. Thank you.
It's interesting that you mentioned the difference between the Kiwano melon you find at supermarkets and the one you ate at Kenya The soil have different compositions in different countries, so sometimes you can take the same fruit from two different countries and find that they have different concentrations of certain minerals, which can (likely will) influence their taste, even if just slightly
Hey Jared, I've been watching your content for 5 or 6 years and it's been a pleasure to 'come along' on your journey! Thank you for opening my eyes to these wonders of the world.
What an honor to live in the same era than you, and get to watch you try fruits around the world with simplicity and genuine curiosity. Thank you for staying true to yourself and for working hard to reach your goal! Here's to 10 years more
17:48 Always look for little old ladies. I love this tip because it’s always going to break you out of the tourist channel and create more genuine interactions with people and cultures you would otherwise miss. Edit: also 24:23 Walk! Absolutely! Get out in it!
@@andrew33933 meh, if you travel to India, you decided to get diarrhea from someone. It’s our stomachs that aren’t used to the local microbes. Not the fault of the locals.
I've been watching you for years and you're genuinely one of my favorite channels to watch. I have an allergy to fruit (as well as vegetables and many other things that grow in nature) caused by a condition called pollen food allergy syndrome, so watching you review different fruits feels like I'm living that experience through you. No, I'll never be able to experience what these fruits taste like personally without getting an EpiPen to my thigh, but this comes pretty close to how I can experience it safely 🥰
Jared, I've been subscribed to you since 2014, and I believe at that time you had about 70-80 episodes. I followed through all the changes and experiments (channel name change, improvement in camera and sound quality, all of the different side projects like coffee alternatives, milk substitutes and junk food reviews etc.) and all I can say is: thank you. Thank you for almost a decade of entertainment and education. Here's to (at least) another ten years. Cheers!
Yes we have all been following your adventures closely. I eagerly await your sampling of the Canyon Plum, Cactus Almond, Giant Syrup Gourd, Spider Apple, Cedar Banana, Eastern Walnut Mellon, Reticulated Coconut, Desert Papaya, Indochinese Gooseberry, Guyana Strawberry and Western Javan Spice Apple! I am actually rather surprised a fruit connoisseur such as yourself has not yet sampled these delights! Here's to many more adventures!
Congratulations Jared. I’ve tried soooo many new fruits in the past 2-3 years because of your channel. It really drew my attention to how many cool fruits one can find, if you just keep an eye out at local markets and grocery stores. As well as whatever is local when I travel!
What I like about this quest is that it could’ve been done by anyone else in history. Like, I imagine some Ancient Greek/Roman guy traveling the ancient world tasting fruit, and writing a book about it. Only for that book to be lost to history. Luckily, this quest is in our time and being well documented
@WeirdExplorer you are among the most inspiring and ambitious people I've ever seen because of how fearlessly you can try new and strange fruits. Watching you, amongst many other role models I've had, showed me how rewarding and interesting life is when you live life curiously and respectfully, all while rejecting fear of the unknown.
Didn't know you started in Malaysia. As a Malaysian, I'm so gratified. Malaysia is not only a food paradise, but also fruit paradise. Keep doing what you do. Love that you cover palm dates in detail, especially near the Ramadan month. I may not be a muslim, but I love having varieties of dates during Ramadan month.
I moved to a new country about a year ago and this vid made me get excited about exploring my surroundings again- I’m so used to my little routines that I’ve forgotten I barely know anything about the place I live! So glad this video popped up in my recommended :)
I love exotic fruit. I haven't had the time to travel for them, but what I see in my local markets gets snatched up! 🙂 Thanks for giving me taste of what might be in store for me!
I stumbled upon your channel some years ago (the "Top Ten Most Delicious Fruit" video I think). I was in high school at the time and didn't really think much about fruit or the natural world at all, but your videos sparked a curiosity in me. Now, I'm studying horticulture and am working in a vineyard! Corny as it sounds, in a butterfly effect sorta way, your videos legitimately changed my life. Thank you
I’ve started watching infrequently from your pawpaw fruit video and I have to say, it has been a blessing and a curse knowing how lacking in variety general stores really are in terms of fruit, I now go out of my way to visit markets when I’m able thanks to you
Honestly this channel is amazing. It's such a great resource on the sheer variety of fruits in the world, and the cultures they contribute too. If only every topic in the world had someone like you documenting and exploring it. It's seriously impressive.
This is where I went online with my family watching me before deciding buy some unconventional seeds for the garden. I was like "hold up I know about a youtube guy that knows about this"
Happy channel anniversay, Jared! Wow, 700 episodes! Congrats on the huge milestone. Love learning all of the variety of fruits in our world. I can only imagine some of the textures and flavors vicariously through your adventures.
This episode was appointment viewing for me, and boy, did you ever justify the early start! What a great retrospective! The opening beats had a real 'time to retire' vibe, which is excellent filmmaking. So pleased to anticipate the next 700. To be fair, your conversational storytelling style has become my favorite part, the fruit and locale are just fun things to talk about. Thanks for visiting with us so often. ❤
I absolutely loved hearing about your youth; knowing this passion started in such a random way makes me want to have the same approach with my children!
I discovered your channel at the beginning of the pandemic. As a born swede i have grown up foraging in the Woods, meadows and ditches of our elongated country. But only for the well known stuff like bilberries, strawberries and chanterelles. When I discovered your channel i started to wonder how possible it would be to forage and try every non-toxic fruit that grows in Sweden. So I did a bit of research. Currently I'm up to 33 different fruits and berries which I've forraged and tasted. Favourite so far: european dewberry (swedish name blåhallon) least favourite so far: Japanese barberry (Swedish name häckberberis)
I love exotic fruits and trying new fruits nobody has ever heard of, and this video got put into my recommendations, and it’s a match made in heaven. THIS IS INCREDIBLE
Seriously, HUGE congratulations, Jared! I've been a big fan of your videos for years now, and I just can't wait to tell other people about The Weird Explorer! I've learned so much, and you've given me so much to share with friends and family that I really don't even know exactly how I could ever really thank you properly. Please keep up the amazing work, please don't ever change (we love you just the way you are!), and I hope everyone is doing well and having a great day!!!
I stopped to think about this for a while, there's a real sense of wonder and joy in your videos, as long as you keep putting them out I'll be watching. Congrats on the big 700! 🎉
Wow that’s such a great idea, congrats on your progress and don’t give up! Most likely we haven’t even discovered all the fruits on earth, but that’s incredible how much you’ve tried. I’m also down for a book, the longer the better. It’d be great with images!
My fellow Jared and fellow New Yorker i am so very prpud of you and happy for you‼️ We have all learned, grew and tasted so many different things because of you and your passion. Youre the man and i hope for your continued success ❤️
Happy Anniversary! My number-one RU-vid channel. Thank you so much for introducing me to many interesting fruits! Looking forward to the next 10 years of your fruit eating!
This is one of the most unique and wholesome channels in youtube. I remember randomly stumbling upon a video of you feeding rabbits some years ago and I've been watching this channel since then. Congrats on the 10th anniversary!
I've only been watching since 2020 but this is such a sweet retrospective of the last decade and I even recognize a lot of episodes! Happy anniversary and cheers to the next 10 years!!
Wow! Ten years! Crazy! Makes me feel old... I started watching you in 2015, so its been 8 years for me, doesn't feel it though! I did lose your channel for a couple years, but I just re-found it! keep up the good work
you've changed so much and so little. i could absolutely imagine you saying the tamarillo dialog in an episode from this year. "i'm not sure if i can eat the skin, so i'm going to"
I love biology and have for years. Over time, I have cultived a specific interest in biology you can eat. Your fruit channel is one way I can learn about the wacky, squishy, wonderful world full of strange flavours.
Your channel is very wholesome and definitely showed I am not alone in this fascination with weird fruits. So many things you said here rang true for me. I tried a Kiwano melon last year and I felt the same way young you did. I saw it and just thought "that is out of this world I have to try it." Didn't love it, but loved that I tried it. That was after already trying and loving to try all sorts of fruits! Keep up the good work good sir!
WOW congratulations on 10 years and 700 episodes. I've truly enjoyed finding your channel and have watched 100s and 100s of episodes. I will try and watch them all. All the Noni fruit episodes are my favorites.
I've been following you since about episode 40, through your numerous intro changes (still like the second one the most). Your journey is a major inspiration to me and a constant source of entertainment. So, thank you for everything, and congratulations on a decade of fruit hunting.
Congratulations on 10 years and 700 episodes! I learn a lot from your videos and appreciate your approach of cultural humility and curiosity. It's contagious!
We're all here watching this channel slowly but steadily turning into a cooking channel :D I've learned quite a bit from watching your videos; congrats to 10 years! :)
My fruit obsession started on Bali 15 years ago as I've tried snakefruit and was blown away. So I bought a ton on the way from the house to the airport from on old lady on the side of the road. I don't know how many years I'm following you... though being open to everything new, your channel gave me an additional kick, so I've tried so many new fruits, over the last years especially. Friends always make fun of me bringing tons of different fruits from vacations. Last time traveling from Azores felt like Johny Depp in "Fear and Loathing in Las-Vegas" with his suitcase. Funny how I also go for "special" sellers.Though I'm not sticking to the grandmas. Grandpas deliver too=) Happy to have you in this world!
I did not expect your channel to be something I would watch but it's been so fun watching about fruit. I do know that you have made that possible with your commentary and many adventures. Thanks for doing this, I hope to see you around for many, many years to come. Congrats on your 700th episode. 🎉
I’ve been watching for a couple of years. For me, the best part of traveling is the people you meet and eating the cuisine of that part of the world. Fruit is a common denominator between all cultures, we all eat it. I look forward watching more of your adventures!
Congrats on 700!!! I honestly love all your reviews even the old ones, so absolutely keep doing what works for you, but it’s wild to think that even if you try new fruits 10 times faster you would still never reach them all in a realistic lifetime. …that said, 20 times might reach them all
I started watching this channel in like the middle of high school, I've been out of college for 2 years now. Crazy. Keep up the great work! Thanks for sharing your journey with us
I'm Vietnamese and live in australia. I went to Vietnam for the first time when I was like 7 or 8 and the fruits I discovered there also sparked up the interest in discovering new exotic/uncommon fruits once I came back. Anyway.. you need to come to Australia! Probably will need to spend a whole year with some natives here to forage for what the land has to offer throughout the year. Can imagine that would be an adventure for sure!
not really a fruit fan, but I love the variety, the stories behind those fruits, your honest opinion. never knew there would be someone like your checking out fruit for the curious, but here you are! Congrats on your 10 year voyage, wish you to get to taste at least 8% of fruits there are :)
I've never really been a big fan of fruit, but your channel has inspired me to try a lot more fruits than I otherwise would have. And I've often been pleasantly surprised!
Thank you brother. I love watching your videos. Not only because I love fruit, but because there’s something about them that helps me find a great calm.
Hey Jared! I started watching your videos shortly after I started working as a produce worker at my local grocery store. While I don’t work there anymore, you’ve ignited this bizarre fire in me thats become so so curious about fruits. You’re an inspiration and I hope you keep on doing you man. Congrats on making it so far 🎉
@@WeirdExplorer Absolutely. Hey! While I have you here (sorry to be a pest) have you heard of the Kesusu fruit of Borneo? It’s been one of the fruits I’m most interested in for a while. Unless you already covered it and I’m just blind, in which case, sorry 😬
Remember the summer I roomed with you and I think we both read The Fruit Hunters. Amazing to see your journey since then, and all of the fruits we read about… And I even think we talked about a a couple of them!…Have followed you since then and have looked enviously upon all the incredible things you’ve tried. Love seeing your adventures and hope you can find another thousand!
Hi Jared Congratulations on the 10 years and 700th episode Thanks for being there and taking us on a fruit hunt round the world with you. Fruit hunters stay strong. Stan
I think it's great that you will never run out of fruit! The journey continues! Plus they keep making new fruit hybrids, like jostaberries, marionberries, and cool new varieties of favorite fruits, like pink lemonade blueberries! 😍
Thank you for allowing me to live and learn vicariously through your travels. You are spreading seeds of knowledge and humbleness that the world needs more of (pun intended). Can’t wait to watch the next 10 years, cheers.
Congrats on 10 years! Came across your channel at beginning of covid in 2020, and watched ever since. It’s been fun and educational seeing fruit and cultures from around the world. Great content from an engaging and charming host, what’s not to love. Thanks for sharing the journey with us!
I wish I could give you a hug Jared. You've been through it! this incredible journey for yourself and for us. Your digestive system and taste buds and the rest of you. You are a legend. I wish you the best and hope I can donate to your channel eventually as you have made an important contribution to humanity.
If you ever come to Brazil, avoid interaction with stray cats, particularly in the southeast. There's an endemic fungus species here that is infecting cats and making people sick. Like, fatally sick. Watch out for that, because it seems to be spreading through South America. Great video and congrats on making these videos for 10 years! I love your content.
He eats fruit off the side of the road lol. I don't think he's worried about weird funguses (and confident in his immune system, which must be incredibly strong by now).
How are you the coolest dude?? Already an accomplished contortionist and you decide to go on this epic fruit quest off of passion alone! You're an inspiration!!
Hey, I stumbled upon your channel two years ago I think and I just fell in love on what you do, your curiosity, your way of explaining, everything, and it made me too try a wider variety of fruits from my country (Brazil). Even today I was at my local market, got an earl fruit (to remember what it tasted like) and I remembered about your channel. What a delight to watch this video today! Hope you have 10 more years ahead and a lotta fruits on your way :)
I don't even know how long I've been subscribed to this channel, but it's certainly become one of my favorites! Thanks for doing what you do and stay safe out there, peace and love.
You've done really well Jared, and you've picked the right path ahead for your future. The world is huge, and everyone loves fruits. I look forward to seeing more of your videos :) P.S. As a Malaysian, thank you for shining a good light on our country. We have our faults, but food and hospitality aint one of them. Our fruits are indeed plentiful, and amazing. By showcasing them on the internet, you're indirectly helping create demand for our fruits, which really helps our fruit farmers too - so I sincerely hope your channel grows :) Thanks!
How cool! I have always encouraged my kids to try everything, especially while traveling. Opportunities are always there is you choose to “see” them. Food in general is a great way to learn about each other, especially different cultures. It unites us in a common place of needing to be nourished, physically and mentally!
As a kid from Singapore, Singapore has modernised so much that we have loss many exotic fruits, though some are in the wild, you really need to find time in Singapore. From a kid's perspective, school, tuition, homework from both, homework from parents, and then you can find like 1h here to search for these exotic fruits. 1h may be a lot to some, but Singapore's wild is usually in the centre, whereas the residents reside around it, so going to these locations would take already the 1h you have left! Amazing that you do this as a daily thing. Your videos give me lots of information for research papers about stuff I do not have time to find/do! Thanks Jared!
