I have to defend Agatha here. It made sense to me. The only people with a motive were Mark and Adelaide. Money is everything in Agatha Christie. Josie had no motive on the face of it, and ‘maybe she was jealous’ would not cut it in court. So, the plot simply gave Mark an alibi for the time Ruby was killed. He had no need for an alibi when Pamela was killed because he had no known connection to her. They then manufactured a motive for Basil Blake. The secret marriage was alluded to when Miss Marple worked out that Basil and Dinah were secretly married by their behavior to each other. This made her realise that a secret marriage could also be in play and give somebody else a motive too. Once Miss Marple showed Josie was married to Mark, that’s when the alibis were useless because Jose could have killed Ruby and had a clear monetary motive. The dress, teeth and nails were clear crime scenes clues that the bodies were switched. That being said, Miss Marple is often based on human nature rather than clues. Miss Marple ‘knew’ that Mark was the murderer because he was about to lose money and was obviously a rotter. But, he had an alibi. So it was her job to break it. A Murder is Announced is by far the best Miss Marple. Everything is laid out, clue after clue but you have to listen to what every character says, no matter how trivial it seems.
I spent two nights in a library but that was due to a combination of factors- far too much mulled wine, an attempt to find a public lavatory, and the unfortunate timing of Christmas bank holiday closures. By the time they found me I'd worked my way through the whole of _Tintin_ and a table of produce intended for a food bank
Generally speaking, the Poirot books are better clued than the Marple ones, with her acting more out of intuition. A really well clued Marple book is a "Murder Is Announced". Spoilers are following: However, the wedding stuff makes sense, if you look at it from Miss Marple's perspective. She knew that Josie was guilty, because Josie identified the wrong body. But Josie didn't have a motive. Quite in contrast, it seems it would be in her interest if Ruby lives long enough to inherit from Jefferson, and then she could have benefited from Ruby's wealth as well. So Miss Marple was wondering, which motive Josie could have had, and marriage crossed her mind. The clue, the readers got, was "Somerset house", which I think was probably a better clue back in Christie's day, when it was better known.
Have you thought about staying at the hotel in Harrogate Agatha Christie disappeared to? Not sure what you'd read there but it would be fun to hear you tell the story!
Ooh I love the intro! Also I totally recommend Crooked House, one of her more underrated ones. Any stately manor will do if you want to go on location. Also it has been made into a movie with Glenn Close and lots of other famous actors!
I kind of love the fact that you do a lot of Agatha Christie stuff because my grandpa loved those books. In the one year before he died he read all the time and mystery books were some of his favorites and Agatha Christie books made up a large section of his collection and when he died I inherited some of his books which included Agatha Christie books so now it feels like I can bond with him even though he is gone now. (Sorry for how long this comment is)
My favourite adaptation of this book is the ‘90s Joan Hickson version. I have this need to call Gavin on my landline and say: “It ought to be a practical joke except she’s dead.”
1:03:47 Because Dinah said she'd do anything for Basil. Gave Miss Marple the idea that it may be a couple who would do anything to guarantee a future together, or that if one half of a couple was so in love with the other than they'd do anything they asked, including go along with a. murder scheme to inherit a lot of money.
Love you too Gavin! Loved the outfit, quite envious. 'Miss Marple' is a lazy cow absolutely made me howl. So pleased you liked Gladstone's and Hawarden, they are such fab places. The Yorkshire Tea shade though Gavin!!!! Ha. The shadow of you in the cap looked quite devilish, don't know if anyone else spotted that ;) I have another video suggestion... when can I be a Watson to your Holmes? Or a Derek to your Yvette. Hahaha.
your videos are always so high effort and are so cinematic to watch , pure escapism and a complement contrast from the quick low effort dopamine burts we’re used to
Gosh, i always want to avoid these videos because i want to read the book first but then i remember i havent actually read a whole book in like 10 years lol, these videos are such quality content and a nice break from all the toxicity of the internet. Great work as always!
On Mr Jefferson not being attractive since the plane crash, I assumed that meant his face had maybe been burnt or scarred as well as him losing his legs. Also, Mr Jefferson described the dress the body in the library was found in, not the one he last saw Ruby in, because Josie told him that she found the earlier dress left in Ruby's room and that the dress on the body was gone from Ruby's wardrobe
1:05:00 If you have the patience to go through all the local marriage records to see if you can find either name then it's not that hard to find out. Whether they kept it a secret or not there'd still be a record of it somewhere, plus witnesses otherwise it wouldn't be legal. They just weren't planning on announcing it until Jefferson Cope died. I guess when miss Marple noticed the holes in their stories and noticed little things about what they said and how they acted she began to wonder if there was a reason why they made those mistakes and were both the ones who had a reason to leave the dance floor that night and be alone for a while, so she started asking around and got lucky.
Ahhhh the intro of this video is so cool and iconic!! I love the way you edited this! 😍 also how fun, I love the concept of this video! And I love how you always go all out when it comes to clothes and location and with the white board too!! The dedication is amazing 😍🤩
I don't know if you still read these comments but i recommend Sleeping Murder. It's actually my favorite Marple novel and one of my favorite Christie novels overall. It's so creepy and eerie, I found it really unsettling. It even has paranormal vibes. I really hope you get to it sometime. I also like Murder at the Vicarage which was the first Marple so it introduces the village where ahe lived St Mary Meed. So basically the first and last Marple are the best imo!
It was so much fun solving this you and my fellow Slagatha sleuths. Gavin, the amount of effort and creativity you put into each and every one of your videos does not go unnoticed. ❤️🕵🏽♀️
It's so interesting to see you get closer and closer and not know if you end up with the right suspect(s)! You're already so far ahead of me when I read it, I was just confused, especially with the motives 😅
You are the most real person on RU-vid🥰. I love what you do, I love that you go to places to read in the right ambient setting. Literally book goals. ❤❤❤ Love you, you just seem like so much fun. I've only in recent years got back into books as I was obsessed as a teenager and I'm glad I've read some unique books. Your channel brought back a lot of my reading memories and loved it. I wonder if you've read The lady vanishes, or watched the film. It's stunning I highly recommend it to you and yer Agatha Christie books are genius but she didn't make it easy to solve the cases. 😂
unlike poirot, marple does age, so when she's older (like in 4:50 from paddington) she gets people to help her out. there are a couple poirot books where he doesn't show up till significantly later either.
Thank you Simon for this idea! This episode is epic Gav📚🍷🔪 I must admit that when you said that you were staying overnight in a library I pictured you on a cot in the children’s reading area ;-)
This video is pure gold. I am LOVING it 💛 I'm working my way through all of Agatha Christie's books. Was very relieved that I've already read the body in the library so I could watch this video and not worry about spoiling it for myself 🙌
I read this in February and I didn’t remember exactly what happened at the end until about 15 minutes in and then I couldn’t wait for your reaction to the end. But I definitely went through the same process when I was reading it.
There seems to be so many stunning places and areas in Scotland and England, I would love to visit some day! And I really love these theme videos of yours, these long ones with Agatha Christie or horror books in a haunted hotel etc :D
Love this series. Some of my favourite agathas that id love to see you solve. Murder is announced and murder at the vicarage - Miss Marple Crooked House, the secret at chimneys and why didnt they ask evans - not marple or poirot Cards on the table and appointment with death - Poirot
My landlady loves British mystery series. And often watchs Miss Marple. One of my faves I have watched with her us "Murder At The Gallop". And Miss Marple mentions Agatha Christie when she is talking to the detective in the story😂
One Piece fan chiming in. I'm not much a fan of novels as i am the graphic variety, but i love a good mystery, i love Gavin being Gavin, and when i saw the time stamps, and a big notebook of names and thoughts in a video still, i knew this was on my list. Keep up the good work!
I loved this vlog so much❤ and also loved being a Slagatha sleuth and have no regrets. Can't wait to do it again I had so much fun during the liveshows and making the wacky board on my livingdoor too.😁 The library is also soo beautifull too and the pie!😍
I read this one two months ago. [SPOILERS] I figured the school girl was gonna turn out to be something as soon as they mentioned her as missing, and when they found her body burnt I guessed that it meant they were swapped to screw with everybody’s alibis. I got that the son in law was the killer. Josie was soooo suspicious but I couldn’t see how she gained anything from her cousin’s death since she was likely to manipulate her into sharing the wealth once she inherited. All in all, Josie being wed to the son in law explained that away. But yeah, it’s a leap to think spontaneously that they are secretly married.
I literally read this book when you posted on your community tab about it bc I was so excited for this video! Love your outfit, you were born to be Detective Gav! I absolutely love watching you on your book reading adventures 💛
Just thinking - if the body was dropped in the library after the murder already happened in another building, what were the ‘groans, blood curdling yell’ that the staff heard in the Bantry house? 🤔
Hi Gavin! Just settled down to watch and am very excited 🥰🍷🔎📖 I love your videos and especially these ones and your spooky ones. I was wondering have you heard of champing? It's camping in a church, you pretty much hire a church to yourself for the night 😄 👻 Xx
Smashed it outta the park again! I was also so confused when I read this one so glad I wasn’t alone when it came to the marriage! Can’t wait to see more sleuthing videos
Mark did say that he had already been taken care of when speaking of Adelaide man situation so knew he was dating but was bit shocked at married 😮. Maybe the fact she knew that Bazzel was married was our clue... anywho fun watch but yeah not great ending 🧩🔎📚
These Christie mysteries are my favorite videos to watch of yours! 😍 You are such a good detective!! I'm hoping you'll do my favorite Marple- Sleeping Murder! That one is a wild ride!
So glad I stayed up late to watch this. Love watching you put all the pieces together and solve the murder. Definitely gonna have to pick up an Agatha book next time I run to the library!
The creativity and the amount of work you put into your vlogs is top notch! I always enjoy your videos! That library is gorgeous! You always stay in the best places!
I really loved Nemesis because it follow Miss Marple throughout the WHOLE book! My gripe with the others is that she doesn’t turn up until 2/3 of the way through😅 A Murder is Announced is also a really good one! Practically a locked room mystery and there were a lot of people involved that could have been the murderer👀
I finished this one today after starting it months ago and putting it down. I totally did not guess the twist. Out of the 2 marples ive read, it is Christie 2, Karissa 0
Gavin i am really sorry for being late to watching your amazing channel but i am really looking forward to seeing this amazing video prayers and thoughts to you and your family love your Aussie family friend John ❤❤❤
