How Did The Old-Timers of Sweden Store and Preserve Food Without Any Electricity In Their Log Cabins? Could You Build Something Using Only Simple Hand Tools To Make Some Foods Last All Year Around?
This Is Old Prepping 101 Done Truly Off Grid.
Underground The Soil Keeps a Temperature of 0° to 5°C (32° to 40° F). Instead of having a refrigerator buzzing, you can dig a root cellar under the log cabin floor and build a hatch, directly linking them together. Root Cellars keep a high humidity (90-95%) perfect for preserving root vegetables and everything canned. I grew the vegetables and pickled and canned them and more. Storing virtually any food under my log cabin floor all year around. Meat however (if not canned) is not suitable for root cellars. Next project will be how to preserve meat without electricity at the log cabin.
This video took over 7 months to make.

Erik my name’s Lee and I just wanted to tell you that I get no greater peace than watching you build your cabin and life around it. I’ve been paralyzed for 34 years and it’s absolutely the most enjoyable time I get the pleasure of doing every single time you post a video on RU-vid. I so very much enjoy living vicariously through you and your life of building your very own life in the woods of Sweden, Thank you so very much for sharing your life and happiness with us that can’t do that which you’re doing, you take me away from my problems and give me a break from them. Thank you again for all that you do. Lee Cogdell West Tennessee.

You'd be amazed how much patience you get when you have zero distractions sucking the life out of you. The only thing you really need to do while living like this is making food, and improving upon what you have built. So spending several days just chopping up stones I imagine could be quite therapeutic while listening to the nature around you. Kind of like building models for several hours, or tinkering with other interests for several hours. It's no longer a chore, but something you want to do.

1:10:59 You should store onions and potatoes away from each other. Try putting your onions on the top shelf. Your onions produce and emit ethylene gas, which speeds up the ripening process and can cause nearby potatoes to rot and spoil more quickly. Our potatoes went bad too quickly when we put our onions too close.

@@AB-ot3bc how toxic gases from spoiling potatoes differ from any vegie spoiling gases? Plus temperatures in winter in Nordic cellars are close to 4 celcius, so it is as cold as your refrigerator. I don't see much risk with this setup as long as one doesn't live months in cellar. Storing food in cellar is literally ancient way preserve food (tough he is missing soil cover from root vegies). Only more old way is digging deep hole under frostline, then covering root veggies with soil, normal vegies isolated from soil, meat and vegies fermented in ceramic containers. and branches or something to cover hole to stop heat escaping from ground and hole. Cellars is just bit more evolved hole in ground preservation method to keep root vegies not freezing and good trough winter and is one main reasons how civilization could advance into north along with hunting, fishing, warm clothing and permanent shelter tech. There would not been permanent settlements in north without cellars/hole in ground.

I am unable to comprehend how someone claiming to have a "strong passion in woodworks" can watch such a tour de force of complete mastery of materials, set-up, planning, tact and long forgotten woodworking techniques and say that he (Grankvist) is "not a skilled carpenter."''' If I understood you correctly, what you wrote was a complete shock. He is a master and nearly every other master carpenter could profit greatly by attaining his level of skill. I mean this is something I would personally consider a "floor fridge" and not a "proper" root cellar. Here in this part of Finland root cellars are always seperated from the cabin/house. My aunt and her husband tho have a summer cottage on a small island at a lake, that has their equivalent of a fridge built down into the floor/ground. It keeps all of the milk products fine and dandy and you reach down to get food. The door to it is made in the same finish as the floor and usually covered by a rug as they have a sausagedog. Comparing this to my grandmas place (in our ownership dated back 110+ years) and at my current stable (the land dates back almost just as far back) have the root cellar built in a way that it has it's own door and you see it as a smaller mound. This a Hobbit hole but a bit different. As my gransmas place used to be a successfull farm, the potato harvest was usually stored there even far into my moms childhood (70-80's).
@axelvalter
@axelvalter 2 года назад
@@marialindell9874 I can see nothing but that Erik has built his food cellar completely correctly. The space is well insulated and he has provided good ventilation. Food cellars under houses have been, and are common at least in Swedish Lapland where I was born and raised. It was the solution for long-term storage of potatoes, root vegetables, berries, mushrooms and preserves where there is no fridge and freezer. Maybe you confuse food cellars with earth cellars? They are built independently, completely or partially buried in the ground. That is not the issue here.
@marialindell9874
@marialindell9874 2 года назад
@@axelvalter Never said that there was anything wrong with what and how he built it. I was just pointing out that what he made is very similar to a "floor fridge" that is seen all over Finland (though that is a more "modern way of seeing it). And I was giving the example of my grandma's place because 100 years ago (and even today) most of the population would have either been Swedish or would have emraced Swedish culture more than say people in my city. (My grandma lives 30+km away from the west coast in a village while I live more inland in a larger city.) I was also saying this based on the older houses and cottages that I know were built when Finland was under Swedish rule/heavy influence. Even then it seems that seperated food cellars were preferred as opposed to building straight under the building. These are just things I have found out and was commenting on because I, as an author, harbour an interest toward Scandinavian and Finnish history and architecture aswell as history overall. I never did say that anything in your comment or the video was wrong and I certainly didn't mean to imply that either. I just wanted to point out that what he built seemed more familiar to me as a "fridge" for food storage as it was dug straight under the cabin, because I have only seen food stored similarly to that at the summer cottage I mentioned.

I didn't hear any singing, so I would venture to guess the authenticity is more akin to what we assume about life 100 years ago, as though the people back then were stoic and serious every minute of the day.

@@brad7957 The thickness of the logs can provide better insulation than some modern construction. Heating is also not that hard. Lighting can be done with solar and wind. The comfort that really may be sacrificed is TV and internet depending on where the cabin is. As log as you have good cell connection, you can also have TV and internet.

Doubtful that will happen... Jesus is coming back soon and is going to put an end to this world of sin and woe. Btw... The Jesuits and the Vatican are the Deep State. They are that despotic power from the Middle Ages that lost their civil power back on February 10, 1798 when General Berthier captured and imprisoned Pope Pius. They have been quietly working behind the scenes to get that power back. The Papacy is looking to implement their social teaching called "the common good." It's ideology is Collectivist in nature and is opposed to the American concept of Individualism. They want a one world government and one world religion with the Pope at the head. They are also using the topic of Climate Change to usher in a National Sunday Law with the idea of lowering carbon emissions to supposedly save the planet (see Catechism 2188 on their desire for a Sunday law). But the Bible says the seventh-day is the Sabbath. If you're like most people, you've probably been taught to believe the Sabbath is a relic of Judaism, but the Bible shows it was set-up at creation before Adam and Eve even sinned (see Genesis 2:1-3) and that it will be kept by God's people on the new earth (see Isaiah 66:22-23). Whose authority will you recognize when the test comes? God and His seventh-day Sabbath or the Pope and His Sunday? That will be the deciding issue that determines who is saved and who is lost before Jesus returns. Hope you choose wisely....
