I Spent 24 Hours In A Ghost Town In Russia (Vorkuta)

Vorkuta was founded in 1932 in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth, not far from the frosty winds of the Arctic Ocean. Its foundation followed the discovery of vast coal fields in the area.
The Government of the USSR decided that this was the best place to send criminals and prisoners of the new GULAG system that was established a few years prior.
Even after the dismantling of the Vorkutlag, the population continued to grow due to the attractive salaries and job prospects of working in the coal mines. In 1989, just before the collapse of the USSR, Vorkuta reached an all-time population of 118,000 people.
Following the collapse of the Soviet empire, many mines were privatised, and along with the significant decline of the coal industry, Vorkuta started losing more and more residents who now see no reason to continue living in a place that is simply not made for human life.
Nowadays, Vorkuta’s population is around half of what it used to be 30 years ago. Walking around town, it is not difficult to stumble into ruins and abandoned buildings which are left as a statement to a past that was once glorious, but that is now, indeed, PAST.
In my quest to set foot in every single federal subject in Russia, the Komi Republic was number 33! Don't forget to follow me on Instagram for live updates @davelegenda 📷

I was born there. Until the age of 12, I was very sick. The chief doctor of the children's polyclinic told my mother: "If you want to save the child, take him to a different climate." There (in the Far East) I lived for 2 years. And then I came back. I left Vorkuta because it happened. I dream of this city. And you know ... The North won't let go. Thank you for the video!

In 1953 in Vorkuta there was a revolt of prisoners in the camps. They took control of the camps and then tried to get to Finland, but were caught by the army and executed. That may have been the fate of those you saw there who died in 1953.

First I wanted to say that you really did a great job with your trip and with producing these videos. I've already seen comments regarding the revolt in 1953. I remembered that I've read something about it and looked it up. I was especially interested when you saw the german monument, because I'm from germany. And I really found the german article I read a long time ago. It turned out that Vorkuta is kind of "famous" in germany. Not particular but because it's the best documented gulag of them all. Especially the revolt incident in 1953, following Stalins death. Where all these people lost their lifes. In that time germany was divided in east and west. Where the west (BRD) resembled more or less the germany we have today and the east (DDR) being under the controle of the Soviet Union. Nearly all anti communist germans from east germany were brought to Vorkuta as political prisoners. It was a horrible thing to happen, but also led to the fact that these incidents are so well documented. At least for a gulag. Because some germans survived and could bring the information of these gulags and what happened there back to germany, outside the controle of the soviet union or the later following russian government. The last survivor I found, was a guy named Horst Schüler who died in his hometown Hamburg here in germany, nearly 3 years ago. He lived on to become 94 years old after serving 7 years in Vorkuta as a political prisoner. He got released in 1955 after living in what was basically a one and a half year long revolt inside the mines and the prison itself. The article about him is called "the forgotten massacre of Vorkuta" and I think that alone says everything.
@MickeyMishra

Okay German bro! We need more info on this. Please post more with links and stuff so we can get a bigger picture. Not much is known from that time period that is out in the real world for people to know if you know what I mean. People like to be pretty tight lipped about that time. Drop the Knowledge grenades dude. Those people who lived through this need to be never forgotten.

Fascists and revisionists deserve gulag. Gulag is just a prison system and not a torture camp. When the red army liberated Auschwitz they didn't offer the Nazi jobs in their space agencies or offer them asylum. They were sent to Gulags.

You can buy an apartment for just $1.00? FOR REAL? If that's true? This would make a good place to turn these buildings into some cool Electric GO Kart raceways! You could buy the whole building, and make it into some Go Kart park indoors. Seems like the buildings are big enough for it. Also, If the locals just want to steal stuff to get drunk? Then maybe just axe that out and have them all work for a Brewery you install and have them drink up some of the profits. Problem of stealing mostly solved. Also, I find it weird that they don't have more snow machines and things like that built there. If you want to keep young men occupied? You have to give them something to do. Seems weird that a town like that does not have more fun in the ice and such. I get Russians are pessimistic. But there has to be something there that is valuable to the rest of Russia if not the world besides coal? All I see is opportunity.
