There are two sides of the San Francisco story. You've heard one of them, a lot. This is the other one. None of this is fact checked, so consider all 'facts' approximate. LMK in the comments what I got wrong.

I went to san francisco this past summer, and let me tell you: it was not NEARLY as bad as the news said. We drove through the worst part of San Francisco (the tenderloin district) and yes, it was bad there, but the whole city overall was actually very cool and nice. We did see one broken windshield (I dont believe we saw anymore) but it was just a really good city.

Yeah a lot of it is overblown. Your experience is pretty typical. There is, however, some pretty hilarious news coming out of SF this week. The cleaned up the entire downtown in three days to get ready for the APEC Conference.

I lived in San Francisco for twenty five years. I finally left in 2013, because it has gotten so insanely expensive that it just wasn't fun anymore. Cost of living doubled from 2007 until 2008, and then it doubled again until 2009. Property taxes increased. It just wasn't payable.

Thank you so much for not doing another one of " Oh God, I'm dying ". I don't expect you guys to believe the experience I've had by the Ferry Building two weeks ago. I'm a Ukrainian American who's got friends and loved ones fighting on both sides and there are days when I'm a complete mess. That day was one of those days. So I'm at the Ferry Building chasing the seagulls- " Come back here, I just wanna take your picture! " and this lady comes over and we start talking. She's obviously mentally ill but she's also sharp and incredibly smart so we start talking about Ukraine. And I completely break down and start crying. And Maria is holding my hand and is comforting me. I wanted to take her picture but she refused so I asked for a hug. So the Loin or those out of control people on the bus are not SF. Maria is.

8 minutes is not enough to tell the story of SF. You can spend more than that in any neighborhood and neighborhoods is exactly what makes this city unique. This city is rich in history and cultural diversity and you can tell a story about every neighborhood you visit. The waterfront itself used to be a wall of freeway, now its an vast open vista filled with people walking along the waterfront. Along with that grew an entire neighborhood that include the Giants stadium and Warriors arena, and Mission Bay/China Basin anchored by UCSF and a new biotech industry. We know about the older neighborhoods like Northbeach, Haight and Castro .. but there are whole new thriving neighborhoods like Hayes Valley, Filmore, Polk, and Valencia. It is rich with museums like Musuem of Modern Art, Asian Art Museum, Jewish Museum, De Young, Legion of Honor and Academy of Science and the Exploratorium. Arts, opera house, symphony, performance theaters. And more than 4500 restaurants in a city less than 50 square miles. This is a wonderful city to live in if only you can afford to live in it.

I was there for 3 1/2 hours with my wife. I noticed right away mentally ill people all over the place. The sidewalks were filthy, with an arm in nearly every trash can. I saw people talking to people but there was no one there. Then we had a guy pull down his zipper and expose himself in front of my wife as he pissed all over a news stand on the side walk. At that point we decided to flee the city as we found the city to be disgusting.

A tourist can definitely have an okay experience visiting San Francisco and sticking to the high traffic tourist spots, but the residents and daily migratory work force from around the Bay Area are having a terrible experience. The city has essentially attempted to save face and swept a lot of their problems under the rug by moving homeless and open air drug markets to less traveled areas that are mainly populated by residents and businesses. Much like the CCP of China, saving and maintaining face is more important than actually fixing the problems at their source. I used to go all over different parts of the city that doesn’t have all of these famous coffee shops, malls, restaurants, museums, and hotels. Many of those areas have been horrible even before the pandemic due to lackluster policy surrounding crime and far-too-progressive DAs and mayors who have shackled their own law enforcement command structure. I’ve lived just south of San Francisco for over 30 years and only ever voted Democrat, but this recent string of far-left Progressives have absolutely demolished the quality of life for lower income and middling income San Francisco residents who stuck around. Very sad to see. Great video, a couple of the spots you showed are still tourist attractions, but are definitely lesser known ones. I can tell you have lived in the area before.

The title of this video has a question: Is it Really That Bad? Your answer to this question, as I see it: definitely YES! It is that bad. The answer you gave at the end of the video is to a completely different, and diverging, question: is worth it to VISIT San Francisco? Yes. Stick to the tourist-designated areas and you wouldn't have to see the really bad things about SF even you have to admit. Visit. Don't stay. Because it would be bad for you. Subscribe
@AdamDoesNotExist
@AdamDoesNotExist 10 месяцев назад
True! Though it's really hard to convey exactly how I was feeling in an 8 minute video. My answer to 'is it that bad' is a bit more nuanced. It is that bad in certain places, but not everywhere. And if that matters to you is a personal choice. I didn't really try to answer if you should live there, but perhaps that was part of my motivation. Again, that's a very personal question.

It would be nice if more people in SF moderated their politics or ideology, but that won't happen until the city is fog-free & no longer susceptible to earthquakes. Personally though, I believe that having a system that allows for the accumulation of enormous wealth by some folks while other Americans - by circumstance or by other means - find themselves ‘living’ in the streets and on the sidewalks of our nations cities to be an abomination. And what could an individual possibly do in a lifetime to be personally worth a billion or more dollars? Ok, ok. Let's talk 😅First, this video is brilliant. You cover everything in a compact, swiftly moving, well-edited video. I am still learning my editing and getting better (my thought, maybe not others 😁) I, being a niche channel about NorCal, consume all things SF as we often travel there for music events, and I chronicle some of these stays in SF, so, that is why we like to stay at different hotels within the City. Your channel: It's sort of all over the place? You definitely have a nice number of subs vs. the number of videos, and some videos, like this one, see HUGE numbers, and others, not so much, and your shorts, the numbers, are ALL over the place (validating my reason to stay away from shorts, for now(ish)). I am going to SUB with hope that there is more content about the Bay. I will always follow and support other NorCal content creators. 👏👏Appreciate your time!
@AdamDoesNotExist
@AdamDoesNotExist 9 месяцев назад
Hello there! Glad you liked this video and thanks for all the kind words! Your channel is really cool. Sub back atcha! I've resisted the temptation to "choose a niche" for a couple reasons. One - I'm interested in a lot of different stuff. The Bay Area of course (two videos from now is going to be another Nor Cal specific vid) but also cooking, and weird pages on the internet that no one has hear of. And Two - I don't really know why a video works or it doesn't. I made essentially the same video on Oakland. I thought it was a lot better than this SF video, but essentially no one watched it. And I don't really know why. The shorts are purely from putting my longer videos into an AI thing called Opus. I thought it would be fun to experiment and see what happened. Not sure I'd recommend it, but it is cool to see how some get traction. All the best!
@SippyCupAdventures

@@AdamDoesNotExist Yeah, "Choose a niche" was all the talk when getting into this hot mess 😆I did. And I have stuck with it, but I can certainly understand others who want to "explore." I want to get to that magical 1K subs, and I am closer, so, that I can buy a cup of coffee a week, maybe! After that, I will explore other content ideas. And yeah, the algorithm is a funny thing. I too recently tried an Opus offshoot, Vizard to shorten my long-form content to shorts. Eh, but, Ill try again for a few and see how it goes. Pleasure meeting you! 🥤

Trust those who have actually been to the city recently. Anybody else is just brainwashed by the media and frankly are harboring quite a lot of bitterness and ill well. Geographically speaking, San Francisco is not large enough to have a bunch of bad neighborhoods. The tenderloin is the neighborhood that is skid Row it has always been Skid Row. The city is beautiful and unique. I think that’s why it’s getting a lot of negative attention. In general, there is so much negativity in the media. It’s quite obvious they seek to destroy and lie to push their conservative agenda. No matter for the time being, the truth always prevails, and so will this beautiful city.

Thanks so much for a balanced tour, you also stayed honest to what you show us. I lived in SF Bay Area for 5 years, and 2 years in southern California (1997-2004). I worked 3 years as a taxi driver. Many major cities have changed in the world. In many crime did go up a lot. But In California, three are to horrible issues bringing down: Drugs, uncontrollable Petty theft and businesses literally closing. These three together are the definition of a terrible fall for the city. Of course It is not a zombie town but there must be something to do fast to save the downtown and bring down the number of burglaries and theft. I lived in dangerous cities like East Oakland and other places. Sure it's dangerous, but there was no constant theft. That is surprised me in California recently for the moment. I live in Paris (its area is called Ile de France). Sure it gets kind of dangerous in some known neighborhoods, but no stores or malls are closing, not even in the most dangerous neighborhoods.

The beginning to an end. Tourist are not even coming there. Major hotels and business gone due to high requirements, standards, expenses, taxes, unaffordable mortgages and rent, crimes and overhead. The list goes on. The amount of vacancies of major buildings, tech jobs migrating to greener pastures or working from home, business decline due to city/state standards and crimes (shoplifting), big name retail stores leaving due to a weak justice system from increase crime rates, homelessness, mom an pop shops tired of the vandalism/ break-ins, and etc. This is a videos made 2 weeks ago compared to what SF looks like 10 yrs ago during this same summer time frame is usually filled with tourist. It’s empty and I don’t see the usual hustle and bustle SF usually has to offer. The roads, parks and major tourist attractions you just showed look like locals enjoying what they have left of San Francisco. We had friends come back from SF 2 days ago and they said they will not go back unless things change. They said it was truly depressing what they saw in downtown SF.
@AdamDoesNotExist

Downtown has changed a lot. In general I wouldn't recommend it to tourists. But all the classic tourist areas were still nice. I saw mostly tourists in those areas, and heard a lot of French, German and Spanish as well. I had a really good time while out and about as soon as I got out of downtown.
@johnjohncrisostomo6152

@@AdamDoesNotExist I’m glad you enjoyed the other local attractions. My point is someone has to explain the drastic drop in real estate for business and homes prices and the large amount of vacancies. A continuous exodus. Economy is disappearing which also affects tourism. My friends were saying it seem like a ghost town and few people were around the main attractions. They said it was a sad sight compared to the other years they were there. They told me go to Florida instead for my vacation and use your travel and hotel points there instead. Don’t get me wrong I love SF but to many have told me it’s not what it used to be.

The way I see it is that it’s the beginning of the end of what San Fran used to be… I remember visiting San Francisco (for the first time) in 2004/ 2005 with family members from Eastern Europe and even though they thought San Francisco had a lot of character and was a beautiful city in many aspects; at the same time they were literally disgusted and shocked at the filth and homelessness that existed then (imagine what they would say now)… they literally couldn’t believe it and said that it was a sad state of affairs no matter how much I tried to give them a positive spin on the situation… The thing is this, how much is one prepared to give in to bad policy for political expediency? What is the level of a dystopian society are you willing to accept? How much societal damage, crime, open air drug use, homelessness and filth is bearable…? If you like to go around and play the dandy-lionesque faux-tourist while ignoring almost completely the death spiral that San Fran is in, that’s fine with me… From any objective or rational perspective San Francisco is done, it’s tragic and upsetting and it won’t be a complete collapse but rather a sort of slow train wreck and after the crash you’ll be left with whatever pieces remain, which won’t be much… So, by all means, show the Full house houses, go down the curviest street, show us the botanical gardens (going through a tunnel that probably smelled of urine/ oh, spooky!), walk through the empty malls and walk by the boarded up retail shops… whatever… I guess enjoy San Fran while you can still bear it because one day you’ll even say, enough is enough.

When we came back to Cal., after living in Conn., and Ga. from 1973 - 1979 I was enrolled in an East bay school where we lived with my mom's sister in Castro Valley, Cal. for a few years. The first thing I noticed (coming from the East Coast) is how dirty and poor the school was. The kids dressed sloppily, had bad language, and disrespectful bad behavior. I even saw shit on the outdoor steps one day soon after I got there. It was disturbing to think a child would do that. I never thought it was dog poo and I thought it was an ill adjusted or not well functioning child that did it. I was shocked as a 4th grader to see so many differences in principles. In Ga. everyone was well dressed and my school was clean and pleasant. Fast forward to now, living N. of Berkeley (The East Bay) see my comment from Metal Leo, he's got East Bay videos of stores closed too. I've been disgusted by my youngest daughter's "school" during "cvd" and we had to take her out of there. All the real men left here and took their families to nature or to where there are more real men and women protecting their children from the chem-tech-predators. My comment from Metal Leo YT Channel's video called: every store is CLOSED in Embarcadero San Francisco. But he only mentions (it's Embarcadero Center (a shopping plaza) in his video descriptions. I never even went there, besides once) and that is not that important in Sf. Cross the street to the Ferry Plaza tower the whole Embarcadero strip is open and lively. Why doesn't he mention that? A lot of the people seem more like pre-covid types (real people), not that many mask tards. Berkeley stores are closed due to them and the techies and bio-techies not nice to be around. They drove up the housing prices and drove the natural ones out of California or homeless. Over 700,000 (real) people left California (in 2020 alone!). There is also a (new) very large multicultural immigrant influx walking around enjoying what's left of the infrastructure in N. Berk., Alb, E.C. (that the disgusting politicians and "schools") hope will be order followers (of lies and malpractice). Along with the order following remote controlled robot UC "students" programmed with lies to work in the UN Agenda 2030 chemical tech. war industries that seek to bring in the Gnd/Communist/Nwo.

There is the base price and then there are all of these add on taxes and fees plus the expectation of a 20% tip! I dont know how tourist can afford to fly here, stay in a hotel and always eat out! Lastly, you never know what is going to happen on the streets these days. Will you get run over, will there be a shooting, stabbing or robbery? Will there be an organized retail theft, will there be people with mental issue to contend with? Are you comfortable using correct pronouns and accepting men and women as a self identified gender that can only be known upon asking and if you dare to mis-gender a huge emotional public scene will occur! Of course it's that bad. Did someone leave the monkey cage at the zoo unlocked?

Visit Whole Foods Market. People blame them for not researching where they opened their store, but Whole Foods thought it could be a force for change in the right direction. Reality said otherwise.

There are a bunch of Whole Foods stores in SF and each one is in a very different neighborhood. Some very nice, some not so much.

Sad about Whole Foods...there is literally a Trader Joe's a few blocks away that has been in business for years and doesn't have the huge problems that Whole Foods had

In your video and like in so many other videos, and if you explore around San Francisco with Google Maps, there are barely any people around. That sums it up.

Keep in mind I’m going in off hours and intentionally not filming people. But I’m general it does feel less busy than pre pandemic.

@@AdamDoesNotExist I lived in the Bay Area for twenty years and visited San Francisco often for community events, concerts, festivals, etc. San Francisco was always full of people and traffic was busy no matter where you were. I would park my car at Colma, and take the BART in to save on the garage parking that could easily exceed $30 for a short meetup with friends at the Fairmont, Tonga Room, etc. Experiencing San Francisco is only affordable to those who earn good salaries. The admission for one adult at the Academy of Science is $45. Factor in two adults and two/three children for a two-hour experience that is "meh" at most. SF lacks the world-class fine arts/antiquities museums that NYC, Boston, and Chicago have. The MET in NYC (one of the most impressive museums in the World) is free, with a recommended, but not forced donation. Want to see awesome Medieval art and a huge collection of armored suits and weapons/arms? Yeah Nah. You won't find that in SF anywhere. Pre-Covid, a very humble two-bed hotel room near Union Square - Like Mark Twain - was $300/day - without breakfast. A room at the "W" on Lexington Ave in New York City didn't even cost that much or in hotels on the West side near the Natural Museum of History would be under $180. San Franciso is a wannabee city on par with something like Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The transplants who live there think it is God's creation on Earth, when it is anything but that. The Brooklyn Bridge and Bow Bridge are far more impressive than the Golden Gate Bridge, and at least both cross to somewhere more interesting than Sausalito or Tiburon! San Francisco lacks relevant history or culture and walking up hills in dress clothing and shoes is anything but a selling point if Uber and Lyft are overwhelmed and you have to wait an hour for a cable car to get you back to your hotel because one only runs every 20 minutes.

San Francisco has great neighborhoods but it's all watered down except for north beach( little italy). Blame it on pop culture. Truly.

Native San Franciscan but have spent more than half of my life in the South. I did not leave my heart in San Francisco. The city I grew up in no longer exists. I'm sure native Chicagoans, Philadelphians, New Yorkers, etc. can say the same thing. What is so sad about this video is he reaffirms the problem. You can visit great places (touristy spots) and avoid the devastating results from years of liberal progressive destroyers so that your trip to S.F. will be great. Just don't look "over there". Heart breaking.

You lost me at 'Salesforce Park' ... if it takes a corporation to sponsor some greenery, there is something horribly wrong with the city.

You have lived there and you know the city and how to get around without a car. A visitor may not be as lucky. They may have a rental car or driven in from somewhere. They may be in the wrong part of town they are not familiar with.
@AdamDoesNotExist
@AdamDoesNotExist 10 месяцев назад
Yeah that's true. Not only that but I was by myself which I think allows you to be much faster. Still, with google maps you can navigate pretty easily. Finding parking isn't really that bad, but DO NOT leave anything in you car while it's parked. It's hard to "stumble" into a bad area of town. You'll know if things aren't pleasant pretty quickly.

So what, a visitor can end up in the wrong part of town in London, NYC, Rio de Janeiro, etc No matter what city one chooses to travel to do your research ahead of time and ask locals what areas to avoid

100%. A quick google search can tell you what areas to avoid in SF or any other major city.

Dude, just literally stay away from the one bad neighborhood and you're fine. That's it. That's the totality of information you need to have a fun day in SF. Don't go to the Tenderloin and you'll be fine.

@@psfca Yet, isn't it sad when you have to learn warfare survival skills to navigate a city as a tourist in order to feel safe, specially when in just a decade or so ago such wasn't necessary? I AM from Rio de Janeiro and, after living over a decade abroad, I still catch myself thinking while walking at night or arriving late from work "no frekking way I'd escape unscathed from such behaviour in Rio..." No, San Francisco is no longer a pretty city if you have to switch to a warzone mindset in order to enjoy it.
