The BMW i4 really surprised me as an excellent electric sedan. In this video I compare it to the Tesla Model 3.

Don't know if anyone said it, but decibels are on a logarithmic scale. A difference of 10dB is equal to a 10X difference in intensity of sound. As you assumed, it's not linear. Hence the difference between 55dBA and 60 dBA is 60 has 3.17 higher intensity of sound. That said, a normal household refrigerator generates about 55dBA and a normal fully occupied business office or a conversation between two people sitting one meter apart is about 60dBA. Neither is particularly objectionable, but 55dBA is noticeably quieter.

I drove both, bought the BMW...... Just so much higher quality materials, fit and finish, and it drives so well. Don't get me wrong, I like the Tesla, it's a nice drive, seamless tech integration, but for me I want a car, and I like quality, so BMW was an easy win. On my i4, when I change drive modes the range forecast changes immediately, e.g I am in eco pro mode, range is 300 kms, change to sport mode, the range forecast will drop to 275 kms immediately, and will increase when go back to eco pro.................... Great car, my first EV, very happy with it

I heard that, too... Frameless windows and lightweight materials don't help. I'm sure the new M3 will be better, but due to Teslas' efficiency and cost goals, it will always fall short compared to the BMW and MB of the world. Price will be the differentiator.

I like the i4 a lot actually, I think it’s nice looking and premium, and range is good (if accurate). Price is a little steeper but this seems more premium to me. The only thing I’m surprised at is that as they have been doing EVs longer than others like Mercedes, I don’t understand why this feels like it’s just an EV platform dropped on top of their standard 4 series platform… why not repackage and improve with a separate platform, so you can have things like a frunk. Seems shortsighted to me but overall I like the i4.

Ive test driven both of these, the interior on the BMW is seriously a step up over the model 3 but when I test drove the BMW I was seriously disappointed with the acceleration, it really taps out after 40mph, just does not have the pull I wanted for an electric vehicle. The suspension on the BMW is far ahead of tesla too

Great, honest review... It all comes down to price difference, IMO. Tesla has better tech, performance, and SC network, and BMW has better quality materials. Also, if the cost of ownership is important, both cars would be expensive to repair out of warranty, but I bet the BMW would be far more expensive due to its complexity.
@BogeyTheBear
@BogeyTheBear 8 месяцев назад
Tesla would be more expensive by the fact the company doesn't utilize a supplier chain and makes all components in-house. Meaning that you're waiting for the factory to get around and make whatever replacement component you'll need to repair the Tesla. This is the crux of Tesla's infamous service reputation where new body panel is automatically a five-figure repair bill and it takes months for new parts to show up at the repair center.
@chrisengletx

i'm on my second tesla- first was a 2019 and now a new Model S. I've NEVER had issues with parts not available. Also the parts are actually pretty reasonable. I whacked my front air dam on a curb and they replaced the whole piece including labor for $900. Way less than I thought. Tesla maintenance centers are HUGE and well stocked.. everythign from windshields to electronics. We also have a new-ish gas Mercedes GL and the local MB dealer is way worse on ordering parts and stuff. @@BogeyTheBear

There's a reason the haptic controller exists in the BMW, I don't recall you using it. It helps you to control the infotainment while allowing you to keep eyes on the road more. It's been around for decades and is a proven means of lowering the time you spend looking at the screen. A touchscreen requires you to look at it the entire time you're touching options. On the Tesla everything requires touch navigation, everything through a single screen - I *hate* that, much longer time with eyes on the screen. Tesla's have a higher incident rate....maybe this is why(?).

Prices are completely different here in Germany. In fact the BMW is available for about 45k € which is the same starting price as a Model 3 Standard Range. Of course you would need to add some extras to the BMW but the difference is not that big in other regions outside US. In the end it comes down to preference imo. My i4 is 1 1/2 years old. Still consider it the best car I've ever owned. My first non manual too in MANY years. The Tesla was proof of concept but is now way overdue for replacement. Problems for the i4 are the range and charging network, so no more road trips for now. When its time to replace our ICE car, will get a plug in hybrid - if its a hatchback with sufficient brake regen for one pedal driving - which gives the control of a manual. At the time I purchased, credits were available on both cars, and the i4 was not that much more expensive than the Model 3 or Kia EV6. + a real dealer support network.

I have a model 3 and i40, I’ve never used any of the lower kw chargers in store parking lots, anything under 50 isn’t worth it unless you’re really low on charge. I took a few hour drive to the beach last summer and the BMW did well and had a little bit more charge than the 3 did when we got to the beach. The suspension is a lot softer too, my 3 has coil overs and I keep them about 5 clicks from soft all around but it’s still a bit stiffer ride than the BMW. BTW you can get sentry cam for the BMW but it’s extra, not sure but I think it only uses 1 forward facing cam and probably the rear backup cam only.

Much higher safety score from Euro NCAP (and i4 is not even tested in the US, somehow... wtf) 21 cubic feet of storage vs the i4's 10... Screen in back Better voice controls 360 camera coverage, and playback, vs the i4's single backup camera Better app, driver-assist, infotainment, and other software FSD Beta as an option Heated rear seats All the following standard, vs costly options on i4: Heated Front Seats, Ventilated Seats, Adaptive Headlights, Wireless phone charging, Heated steering wheel, Lumbar controls, Adaptive cruise control... TLDR; the BMW is a better car, but Tesla is a better full package if you consider charging network and cost. Seems that we’re straying away from reviewing the car versus car experience in favor of pulling in ancillary factors that give Tesla the edge. We are downplaying the reality of range anxiety and Tesla’s inaccuracy of range estimates, while at the same time we are using Teslas charging network as a point of superiority over other manufacturers. I don’t know if anyone listened to Elon Musk on Rogan last month, but his comments that range anxiety is a farce were completely egregious.

I have the eDrive40 model i4 and I actually really enjoy the HUD. The BMW also has remote cameras that will show the vehicles surroundings - so that's also available in the BMW. A friend of mine has a Tesla Model 3 and I've driven that also. Whilst the BMW is more expensive than the Tesla, the drive on the BMW is significantly better as is the build quality. Is it a better daily driver because the Tesla is cheaper? I wouldn't say so. The BMW is so much nicer of an experience! You feel like you're driving the future. The driving display is much much better than the Tesla. Finding basic things like the aircon and heated seats is much easier on the BMW - it's entirely obvious. Took me a good bit of time on the Tesla to find those functions... whilst driving because I needed defrost. Not great, or safe. I do lament the lack of a frunk on the BMW, it's a real missing. It also doesn't seem like we're going to get Adapters for NACS on BMW at all in 2024, we'll have to wait until 2025 for a new car with the NACS port. That's a big bummer. Finding charging is currently an almost daily headache for me. Having said that, the BMW is built in Germany in car plants that use exclusively renewable energy from what I understand which is a big plus from an eco-friendly perspective. I didn't push the model 3 to the limit on the road particularly, but the handling on the BMW is exceptional. I have driven a Lamborghini round a race track a few times, and I couldn't push the back of the BMW out nearly as easily as the Lambo. It's glued to the road and feels solid as fast as I dared to push it. And at the end of the day, the Tesla looks like a Tesla, and the BMW looks like a BMW. The BMW is just a way cooler looking car, especially with the M package. It just looks like a badass car. Is that worth $15k. Maybe it is. The two years of free charging doesn't hurt either.

I can pull into my garage and unload directly through the kitchen door without having to duck in the rear hatch, walk around the side, and squeeze between the Y and my other car). Those rims are about 35 miles off of the range which is established at 100% charge. BMW doesn't t want you to change the batteyr to 100$ all of the time. so, you have say a max of 307 - 34miles = 273 then 80% of that is 218 miles, and then winter. If you live in New Hampshire, and actually need to drive to drive. there's only 4 CCS Electrify America charging stations in the entire state of New Hampshire. Electrify American and BMW is a damned nightmare. It's a nice car but make sure you have AAA because CCS fast changing in New Hampshire is that bad. What the BMW has to offer is useless if you need to be towed. I was told by BMW that there will be no Tesla NACS access, PERIORD until sometime in 2025. If you have an adapter, it's useless unless Tesla a=cas a charging agreement with Tesla. Don't count on NACS access from a BMW in 2024. I got rid of an i4 m50 for this very reason.

@@GDM22Sure, I agree. Prices have increased dramatically on the BMW i4 here in Sweden. Base price for cheapest one is 700k (~$66k) whereas a base Model 3 is 519k (~$49k). The base i4 has slightly better range though (up to 590km WLTP vs Model 3 513km WLTP), but not sure that difference is worth $17k~ (!!!)
