I Spent Over 100 Hours To Make This BUT Does NOT Fit On My Lathe

Here we are, my greatest woodworking / woodturning project so far to date. My initial plan was to make a segmented wooden torus art but due some miscalculation that did not fit on my lathe so had to improvise. Used sapele hardwood segments total over 700 pieces glued together with spalted beech tops to give good contrast. It was then carved and attached to a base using some brass rods to make the piece elevate. Finished with mineral oil to really pop the grains

Hi David you really have patience to put all the hard work into this unique piece of art. The woods have really nice grain and the markings and colours. The carving really makes the piece looks fabulous. The finish you used on the wood at the really showed the colour and carving marks. Fantastic base like the curve edge is 😎 cool. How does Dragon horns sound to you to call it. I think something like this should be worth £400. Amanda x

Wow - so worth the hours of work for the end result - I'd love to come up with a brilliant title befitting such a masterpiece, but my old tired brain can't come up with anything (Alien Torus Bull Horns did pop up - sorry, told you my brain had shriveled away😶‍🌫)! 🤣🤣This piece is so magnificent it should be in an art gallery for everyone to view, admire and budding wood turners to learn from. 🤩👍👀🥇
@DavidsWoodturning
@DavidsWoodturning Год назад
Thank you so much 🙂 I am trying to name it with one word only now :). What I am leaning towards is "Artorus" as this work breaks down to ART (I consider this piece to one of my first artistic creation) plus it also contains TOURS (what was the original plan for this project)

If Covid hadn’t shut down my gallery I would 100% put this on a 50/50 consignment lol. Screw than standard 60/40, or 70/30 from chunce galleries. This is a really beautiful piece and I absolutely would have displayed it.

I was thinking about a name for your piece. It reminds me of a torque (as in a neck ring). But it would have to be for something fairly large, which got me thinking about creatures from Greek mythology. What do your think of "Torque of Tython"? This has a double meaning because the term torque is not only a collar or neck ring, but it is also a term in physics referring to the strength required to rotate an object on an axis, and your piece looks like it's twisting.
@DavidsWoodturning
@DavidsWoodturning Год назад
Yeah i like your thinking. My wife said it looks like a horn but quite a few people suggested mythology creatures 😀
