Woodturning an extraterrestrial object what is actually a banksia nut but certainly looks rather unusual wood with green epoxy resin was looks like slime :) Casted in deep pour epoxy resin and used mica metallic powder for enhanced effect for this one of a kind hybrid wooden vase. For the woodturning part I used my negative rake carbide bits then it was sanded to 3000grit with final buffing at the end to achieve high gloss finish

I use dry banksia branches and seed pods (which is what this is) in my fish tanks, good for fish who prefer soft water. The seeds come out of the little mouths (green bits), but only with fire do they open. Many of my countries native species require fire for their seed pods to release their seeds. So fire is a big and natural part of Australia's ecosystem .... just not so good when it happens all at once and everywhere. On some of those days during our terrible bush fires a few years ago temps reached 52C ... the sky was dark grey, the sun a hazy red ball and all you could smell was burning eucalyptus - was like we had been cast into hell.

Incredible. This summer we had 42 here in the UK and caused massive troubles from fires to dehydration etc cannot even imagine 52 🤦‍♂️

Materials like this that have those natural holes in them have always kind of creeped me out! I feel like something could be lurking in one of the spaces, ready to pounce... but that's just my overactive imagination. I love how it turned out. Great job!

Thank you so much 😊 Also I checked all the holes mainly because of dirt and lose bits and bobs but also could not see any foreign body lurking in there 😀

You should start collecting the shavings of your more colorful projects, and then cast the shavings in resin to be turned into a ornament or another vase. Just a thought, since every woodturner seems to have so much material thrown away and discarded.

Thank you for this video. I've not done any resin projects yet, but I'm watching closely to learn as much as I can before I try one. So, the bit you added about WHY you wet sand taught me a good bit today! Also, I never thought of connecting the buffing wheels with the tailstock, but I will do that from now on.

As an Aussie I have to say that banksia are found all over Australia where ever bushfires are frequent. They are particularly common around Sydney and in fact where discovered there by Sir Joseph Banks (he named it after himself) the botanist on Captain James Cook's ship The Endeavour on the trip where he is credited with discovering Australia.

WOW that’s a cool piece. I’ve collected burls from around the world from bowling ball sized to table base size and I have so many I think it’s time to buy a lathe and do some of my smaller ones to downsize my collection… so I can buy more 🤣

Wow, I've never heard of or seen banksia nuts before, I had to have a google too! They're like pine cones' more flamboyant cousins! 🤭 They really seem to lend themselves to unlimited transformation.
