I Spent The Night With Superman is the title of this HiTop Films Video Essay. Are these even Video Essays? I guess this is a Superman Video Essay. This HiTop Films episode is about the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the 1978 Superman film, specifically their first interview and how the DCEU misunderstands what makes Superman, Superman. Do you think I said Superman enough times in this description for RU-vid to notice me?

Superman IS superheroes. Superman is the type of guy who, when a kid he just saved says "Cool costume," Superman immediately puts his hands on his hips, puffs out his chest, and says "Thanks. My mom made it for me." Superman doesn't need to impress you. He wears primary colors and his underwear on the outside. And he flies around saving cats from trees. And you know what? HE LOVES DOING ALL THOSE THINGS. Superman isn't ashamed of being dorky or corny. Superman loves being Superman. Or rather, Clark just loves being Clark.

The comic book movie genre already existed and has many entries by this point, So Snyder realized it wasn't enough to start off with just another template style approach which would normally be deconstructed later. Deconstructing it from the outset then reconstructing later for core establishment using uncommonly known elements from the years of comics and history was the best approach at this point in time. He was aware that the audiences already had a built in map of the genre and of Batman and Superman, he proceeded to challenging all of our assumptions from the outset so this otherwise very familiar genre and familiar set of characters couldn't be taken for granted, and instead would surprise us time and time again providing for discovery and a fertile ground for growth storytelling wise. This was Snyder's goal. He was going for a short contained universe of shared arcs supported by patterns, symbology, themes and story symmetry. A unique structure that would have added diversity to the highly Marvel monopolized climate of typically formulated movies. Snyder is a great visualist and storyteller, his story is told by the visuals, substance with in the style... He tells the story through visuals, atmosphere and music and the dialogue in his movies supports his style of storytelling..It's his brand of cinematic Language. If you notice, all through Man of Steel and BVS Clark was constantly dealing with choices and hardships and both of those story elements build character. Chris Reeve said "It's not the cartoony Superman people are connecting with, it's perseverance and the ability to understand difficulty and turn your back on it."....That's exactly what we got with Snyder's Superman, but some people interpret those elements as "depressed" or "Emo" or to complicated ...When in fact it's the very raw core of Superman.. Zack was the very best thing for DC movies.

John Wonder He didn’t deconstruct him he hadn’t introduced a person to deconstruct he RUINED Superman he messed with his mythology like Jimmy Olson.Lois Fuckin Lane didn’t even act sassy or was a strong woman(take it from a guy who doesn’t even support feminism he ruined Lois’s essence).Jonathan Kent literally thought Superman shouldn’t be helping people,he literally said “maybe” when Clark asked if he should’ve just let those kids drown.THAT’S HIS FUCKIN UNCLE BEN.Superman isn’t a god.In Birthright a comic Snyder drew imagery from, the point of it was actually to separate Superman and God(IRONIC isn’t it).Superman instead of saving those 5000 people in Metropolis like he did in the first fight instead he decided to take out Zod and save the masses which is not something he does,he tries to save EVERYONE and stop the villain later.Need I remind you of Kingdom Come and Superman 2(Chris Reeve). The main problem I have with this is that these characters mean something to people and when you just rip them apart your pissing off Superman’s fan base and I’m not even a fan.To deconstruct doesn’t mean to ruin,The Dark Knight is a Batman deconstruction but it doesn’t create new characters basically so is Kingdom Come,What’s so funny about Truth,Justice in the American Way,Superman for the man who has everything and etc.If you enjoy the movie good on you but that’s NOT a SUPERMAN movie.”Raw essence”🤣I think I made it clear it’s not.”Exactly what the DCEU needs”🤣The box office doesn’t agree and neither do plenty of viewers.Yes we do need to spice things up but not like this.

What you need is a balance, not one or the other. The comics for the past twenty years have ignored the Super, and its hurt the mythos just as much as a poor showing in film for not showing enough of his human side. Its not about "put the man back in the Super". Its about getting and portraying all of Superman.

Probably one of the best Superman films to be made which explains what it means to be Superman. A film which shows him up hold his ideals even when all the odds are against him. It even gets right just how powerful he is, but also tells us why he never uses that power outside of the law. It shows Superman as a man bearing the weight of the World on his shoulders and being a symbol of hope to all. It tells us the burden of having Godlike power and the difficult choices that come with it. But after all that, Superman remains one of the human, one of the most kindest, one of the most caring and one of the most friendliest people you can know. That's why I love Superman as a character, and gets me really frustrated when someone says Superman is boring.

When it comes to DC Movies, we are strangely in sync. Batman doesn’t kill. Superman loves. All of these things were missing in the DCEU. Small things that some might not think matters...but they do. Superman’s entire purpose for being a hero is his love for humanity. He grew up in the center of the United States, in the Heartland of America. He LOVES. That’s what the focus should be. Not his power, or his weakness, or his morality. It should be his undying, unprejudiced love for the world that took him in and raised him.

Erin Baird The DCEU is a half baked mess that should just be forgotten. What’s great about DC is that it’s characters can live on their own with minimal interactions with characters from their universe. Marvel is great for the opposite reason. The DCEU tried to use the MCU method, when its characters don’t fit in that kinda slot. Batman has the greatest cast of characters in DC’s history, so good Batman could have his own movie universe. Why muddle that with Wonder Woman and the Flash? Let those two do their own thing for God’s sake.

People who think Superman isn't relatable forget he's supposed to be inspiring. He's not a reflection of our flaws, weakness, and insecurities. He's the symbol of what we can be at our very best. Pure goodness. Selfless heroism. Incorruptible kindness. That is Superman.

That is the beauty of Superman: Clark Kent. Smallville, for all its cheesy flaws, got this right even when he DID develop a superhero moniker in Season 8. Superman is who he is because of who he is as Clark, an ordinary guy thrust in extraordinary circumstance who'd rather hang out on a farm with his loved ones, play a game of football, and ok sure go wakeboarding off Niagara Falls but who the hell wouldn't when you got that kind of power!? That'd be fun! But notice that? Clark has the power to affect change in the world, but if he had HIS way, he'd use it to have good clean wholesome fun first, not be some almighty despot who sees us as pets!

I love the video. I wouldn’t say Superman the character is essentially just about his relationship with Lois, but that is a major component of the characters. The romance is the core of Donner’s films but not so much the character since 1980, who has been more broadly about the truth and justice stuff plus much more sci-fi action. The thing that is most important, and I think you absolutely nailed it, is that Superman is about being human, in all its positive aspects. That’s why treating him like the ostracized alien is such a wrong approach. It’s completely opposite of what Superman is about, and it’s why even though I still like MOS, I do think it was entirely misguided and the wrong approach to the character. And I hate that WB just doesn’t get this.

I'm glad that there are people like you out there who still love and respect the character of Superman. I feel like as a traditional (debatably the most traditional) superhero, Kal-El can't really thrive in such a postmodern world, but people still love to see a simple and wholesome story, especially now that it is becoming increasingly rare in the comic book/superhero movie industries (and storytelling as a whole). Superman isn't lame or boring, he's just human (despite being Kryptonian). Stripping him off his humanity like Zack Snyder did, and turning him into an almost divine alien, who seems broken and detached from the world he is supposed to adore and protect was a terrible decision. Man of Steel gave us a Superman who was hollow and easier to hate than love, and it wasn't fair to fans of the character, particularly the fans older than myself who grew up with a more classic Superman. This character needs to be restored in the public's eye, because I genuinely believe it would have amazing cultural implications for Americans as a whole. If I could choose anyone to save Superman from his fallen grace, it'd you Alex. I really hope you get the chance to do something with his character one day.

@HiTop Films Bryan Singer recognized this years ago, and tried to achieve this in 2006 with Superman Returns, and it fell flat on its face. I remember the first time I saw this scene and though I didn't understand it, at first there was this warm wonderment of simplicity. As I got older, I understood it and found it to be beautifully entrancing. The movie is a triumph because it does something that many Superman or DC movies haven't done which was be human. Not every superhero film needs to be about some loner who poses in the rain or darkness, a lot of them should be colorful, and bright with good action and actual humanistic moments to give faith into the hero and cheer when he or she saves the day.

Donner saw this as not just three acts...three different films in one... majestic men and women... almost gods of Mt. Olympus, a human family story against the backdrop of a Andrew Wyeth creation, then suddenly a revelation... suspicions of destiny; then the comic book brought to life... characters in 3 dimensions. Versamillitude was the guiding word of Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve saw Superman as a " friend " Put all that together and you have a superhero film that has stood the test of time. If Donner didn't treat Superman with respect...it would have failed...and it is possible others would not have made such successful films as the marvel films in phases one through three. Let's give Mr. Donner, Mr. Reeve, Ms. Kidder their flowers already. Thank you for this video analysis!

Christopher reeves is quite simply the most perfect casting in the whole history of cinema. not superhero movies, ALL movies. He was just perfection, I was in love with his charm when I was a kid and really felt like the quintessential form of the caring yet firm man. The eyes, the smile, the gestures, the walking. He was perfection. Sadly this world cannot stand perfection, and what he had to suffer was such a tragedy. Weirdly enough he had great following in italy, he appeared in multiple tv shows after the incident and our news covered his life very closely. even my parents, who generally hate famous people, were touched deeply by the incident and remember everything very well. reeves transcended cinema. he made superman what it is today. he made superhero movies possible because everyone fell in love with him and accepted sups as an icon. Nothing of what we have today would exists if not for that man's smile.

Read Superman: Rebirth by Peter Tomasi, then read Superman: American Alien, All Star Superman and Superman: Birthright if you want the good sides of Superman. No specific order. The first two movies are good too (when you look past his weird silver ageish type powers), but you get more better sides of Superman in the comics I mentioned. One of my problems with the old Superman movies were his powers. Other than that, the movies are good, those wacky silver age powers are just a bit too much for me. They're in All Star Superman too, but I gove that story the same pass as the 1978 Superman movie.

I think you did a great job showing what made Superman 1978 so special and endearing til today. While contemporary superhero films try to be super serious and gritty the 1978 movie has innocence, charm and an unabashed sense of joy and wonder. In an era defined by disillusionment after Watergate and Vietnam Superman the Movie was full of hope and belief in goodness with characters we could fall in love with ourselves.
