To be on the safe side, your friend should wear a mask when tearing out old carpeting and the old tiles could have some asbestos. You don't want to breathe this in. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!
If there is a Habitat for Humanity close by it would be good to get supplies from there. They have building supplies, lumbing everything for a house for affordable prices. Because its extra stuff from different projects or what people donate.
Don’t let anyone deter you from following your dreams! I also don’t want to be in debt. I’d rather live debt free by reusing old items, fixing broken things, learning new skills to repair things! You got this! ❤
Make sure your home is well insulated so you’re warm n the winter and keep cooler in the summer when your air conditioning is running. Best wishes for a smooth renovation.
Miss Ki, firstly, congratulations on becoming a homeowner! I have actually become a homeowner for the first time and I can tell you, that first month you DON'T have to pay rent -- aka someone else's damn mortgage -- is so sweet! Okay, I would like to make a suggestion as someone who, like you, is new to the "fixer upper" game. Please do yourself a favor and hire a professional to come and do a mobile home inspection of your new mobile home, top to bottom, including electrics, plumbing, structure, everything. Yes, there really are home inspectors who do mobile homes (I did a Google search), but you can also hire a contractor to inspect the home and come up with detailed estimates of what needs to be done, especially since you plan on hiring someone to handle the electrics, anyway--you can then hire them for the electrics, and you'll have a plan for your DIY of the rest. Please, please, please consider doing this. Yes, it's an expense (I paid about $2K for both a home inspection and a separate electrical inspection on my house) but in the end, you will be smarter and safer for it! Zo, please invest in some serious work gloves--tetanus is deep and it's real. My poor husband was wearing gloves like yours when prying some old wood paneling off the kitchen wall, and he got a stray nail under his fingernail--we spent about 3 hours in Urgent Care, including a tetanus shot in his behind! Also, we had black mold (the scary, deadly kind) and had pros come in to remove it. Basically, I know how exciting it is, and you're really dreaming of appliances, paint colors, and all that good stuff. But you need to put your time and money into making sure you are safe living in the RV first, so hang in there.🏘🏘🪻👷🏼♀👷🏼♀
all this! i’m a first time homeowner too, congrats to both of yall 🎉 the mold is reaaaal!! mask up with any of that moisture if it’s found in the mobile home Ki. but the process of diying is so worth it
My husband and I started out in mobile home almost just like this 42 years ago, we rented it. I will tell you that it was some of the happiest times of our lives, we called her Betsy the beauty. She was small but we were young and very much in love and she was our first home together. I will enjoy following along as you take this journey, I hope you make as many memories as we did. I also want to tell you that I just love your beautiful smile and thanks for taking me back to our Besty the beauty.
Love your vintage beauty! I would suggest doing a roof over. You put framework on the roof, add the insulation and the add a new roof. Give you the insulation without taking any head room from inside your trailer. You also need to insulate the floors and walls. That era trailer did not have good insulation. We have such good thin insulation now with high R values. Looking forward to you helping this beauty shine again.
Really cool vintage mobile home! So nice to see you taking on this little gem. We are finishing up our own vintage 1957 Liberty mobile home project. It was a huge project and I have only really started documenting the end stages on my channel. Still have the bathroom to finish yet so look forward to showing our progress with that. We have done everything ourselves and try to source as cheap as possible. I look forward to watching your journey! Betsy
DIFfferent…..older videos they remodeled a double wide mobile home……really good DYI I learned how to replace mobile home windows from Doug and Ashley..aka Eevee Look for stuff on market place as well… I am her for the journey…….just swing the camera around slow…..lol
Hey, I’m excited to watch you remodel this GEM. I lived in this very same year and pacemaker model when I was 1-3 years old, then my parents bought a brand new 1974 Squire and had it set up I. The empty lot next door. (Made the move easy for them. 😂) I lived in that trailer until I was 22 years old and moved states away for work. When I was six, and my mom went back to work, my babysitter lived next door in the pacemaker. I have fond memories of her, still have the raggety Anne doll she made me still, I’m 53 now. People crap all over mobile homes, they are awesome. Not sure how hot and humid your summers are but look into a rubber roof with a gabled tin install. Really helps with heating and cooling and sounds amazing in the rain (the rubber mutes the tin a bit so it’s not like nails loud.) we did that to ours and my grandma’s mobile home she got used from FEMA in 1977 after a flood washed away her house. She lived in it until last October when she passed away, now other members of my family moved in and remodeled and it looks great. If you take care of them, they last forever. I’m looking forward to see what you do with yours. Recommend fireproof insulation. If an electrical fire breaks out, it can save the whole home. And personally I’d name your beautiful find "Bella Donna’ it just means beautiful lady. For both the house and the owner, double entendre ftw.
Being a single woman, you may want to consider a stackable unit for the W/D. If you put your W/D in the bedroom, then your bedroom is multi-tasking. If at all possible, make your bedroom an oasis where you can come down at night and relax. Let your second bedroom do double-duty with the W/D, desk space, laundry hamper, etc.
You probably need to pretty much take that down to the studs. There could be black mold. Pull some of the interior walls off and check. I am excited to watch your journey here 🤍 Not having to pay rent anymore will be awesome. Don’t get impatient, this could take awhile.
RU-vid comes in very handy for this reason I myself had to fix my dryer as I couldn't afford to get it done professionally or buy a new one and managed to fix it with good ol RU-vid
Hi Ki! Congratulations and I'm excited to follow your journey restoring your new home. I did the same thing ten years ago while finishing raising four kids in an older 29' Jayco. Building skills and becoming debt free is a fantastic decision and you will learn a lot!
I’m so excited for you!It will be lots of work, but oh so worth it. I agree with your thinking…everything is getting so. Expensive…your vert smart to buy a fixer upper and pay cash to repair it as you go…wishing you the best🤗
there is another channel the handy landlord that deals with mobile homes. I think he owns a park him and his wife are very lovely people as well. I think you might get some good tips from looking at his channel and I think the same thing that him and his wife are the type of people if you contacted them, they might offer you some tips or advice?
Ooooh thank you. This will definitely come in handy (had to add the pun 😂) when working on it. I appreciate that because it’s needed during these beginning stages
also, there’s one called the Bastaricca family and another channel diyfferent. They are the nicest ppl. I have seen them to repairs or buy parts that were a little less money because they thought outside of the box and actually it ended up being superior. I know the ones in Florida the best we’re going to like these stores where you got things marked down a lot I don’t know where your location is and I know that the other family family they’re also in Florida. I think they’re in northern Florida though, the Husband would get like a part that was not necessarily intended for a mobile home, but he’s got so much experience in remodeling them that he would find something better and had a better price that was not traditionally designed for a mobile home. I’m probably not making sense. I think you would have to watch themto get an idea of what I’m trying to describe
I'm proud of you for following your own way. You'll be amazed how quick your learning curve will be in carpentry. Insulate well my love, don't want you cold in winter. FYI, home Depot has a retro Galanz fridge that comes in baby blue or Red.
Glad I found your channel I used To live In one like this looking to see your plans for your new home I still live in a older mobile home but It's paid for Be proud congrats...
I lived in a 1969 12x64 3 bed, 1.5 bath mobile home for years. The weird things I remember were the lack of electrical outlets, so since you’re redoing the electric you may want to add some. Also, the interior doors were small, so be mindful of getting large items through small spaces. But your home is cute, and I’m sure it has good bones. Cosmetic stuff can be done a bit at a time. Those floor tiles may have asbestos, so be careful. ❤
I've always thought the same exact things you said here! The older vintage trailers and homes even are so quaint and cute looking. I love them. The houses being bult around me are what I call cookie cutter houses, those houses you build and they all look the same as the next door neighbor, even rural their building them and in drab gray and white and black. Theres a house I drive by all the time, and its so old and looks right out of 1950. so cute. I'm excited for your journey young lady, you are wise beyond your years~
Those Spartan Carousels are so beautiful😍. I love the kitchen counter the most and wanted one that was a fixer upper but most were already restored and expensive. I can't wait to get this one back in shape
I'm really excited for you. This looks like a lot of fun. *The only thing I'm concerned about, is "asbestos." * When redoing the ceilings and stuff, you may want to get that checked. I don't know if mobile homes contained that stuff, but older homes may have that, and I think you may want to get that checked just in case, because you do not want that crap in your lungs. Please be careful ❤ 🙏
Just found your channel and am excited to be allowed the privilege of joining you on this adventure. Thank you. You're doing what many are also considering doing.
Subscribed to watch your progress. This is an amazing find! I love anything vintage. Live in a house built in 1949 with almost all the original features, even the pink bathroom tile 😂 I can't wait to see what you do with your place! What a gem! Good luck on your journey! 🙏🙏🙏♥️
I really want to keep following this journey. Because it’s inspiring. I’m about to purchase a tiny home. I live in an apartment. I’ve been there for many years. I’ve always wanted to purchase a home. But I feel like now it’s not even worth all of the money. And plus I do not want a mortgage. I do not want to owe any one. I never thought about going to Facebook marketplace. That is a great idea. Congratulations on your home. It may cost let’s say for example 30,000 to get everything done. You still may have came out real good with spending. Because now the new mobile homes are 100,000 to 200,000 dollars. I wish you so much success on this journey.
When I was young , we bought a fixer upper. We did a lot of work. It was worth it! We had old tar type paper with thin linoleum over it! A lot of people want turn key homes now. I really am impressed with you
I hope you didn't throw away the glass panels even if they are broken, they are most likely you storm windows that actually go on the inside of the windows. These old trailers have screens that go on in the spring & then once winter starts you remove the screens & put the storm windows in. Even if the glass is broken save the frames a local glass shop can easily replace the broken glass.
I absolutely love it. It's so cool and fun! And you are gonna be living in a unique home. Something that no one else has and also hard to find. It's amazing. 😊
While you’re at it, trust me, make it a smart home. You can make sure to keep it looking vintage. You will never regret having W/D, apartment-sized DW, big kitchen sink one bowl, sink cover for added counter space. Plenty of electrical outlets. Insulation. Wool insulation. Foundation of mobile home - underneath with good insulation and sound proofing. Living in cold country, be sure to use enough insulation that you aren’t cold/winter or hot/summer. Do it right the first time and you will have no regrets. No cutting corners. It’s your home.
Love your energy and decision to “own your own”. It is a beautiful thing to not only be in your own space but to truly own it. As a woman of a “certain age”, keep God first and research and make plans before committing to anything. There is nothing wrong with thrifting and buying used items of quality. Good deal on the car. Make sure you check everything out before jumping. You are well on your way to success. God bless and keep positive energy around you.
Girl, you don't have to explain anything to anyone why you bought an older trailer. It's your budget. Your home there is no one paying your bills but you. I think what you're doing is smart, and you will have money in your pocket and owe no one anything. Best of luck to you. I'm sure you will make it a beautiful home.
I would guess an apartment rent of maybe 1500 a month which I know rents are high . That is $18,000 a year you are putting in someones pocket . I love every little detail of the inside and outside . It may take you a little elbow grease , time and money to get it right . In the end you will be ahead of the game .
I’m so excited to watch you renovate your new home. I’m 70 years old and as a child our Family ( Mom, Dad, Brother and us Two Sisters) lived in this exact trailer! ❤
Fixed up my share of old houses, 1st advice; take your time and take it 1 step (room) at a time, otherwise you’ll get overwhelmed and discouraged, good luck.
you go girl! I can totally relate to what you are doing. I am working on an old farm house so as not to rent anymore. I can't wait to see what you do with the home.
Gurl yeesss!!!! I am here for ALL that you are doing. Imma bout to go on FB Marketplace and find me a home. I'm inspired. Keep it up. I'm watching..and following.
Also you aren't kidding about these mortgage rates and housing costs. It's why me and my hubs are staing in our tiny home with our cheap mortgage, and out 3% interest. WE are making it ours. lol.
becareful removing the underflooing if you need to the beautiful checkered pattern because since this is from such a old home, those tiles may be asbestos. if possible you may just want to leave them and put flooing on top. Or just make sure that it's not before you disturb them. As this was the case unitl a bit before 1980 and was completely all banned in 1989. Same with your roof so just look into it. want to make sure you and yours are safe when doing renos. It could also be in the insulation in the walls as well May need a tyvec suit and a respirator mask when handling because it's the particles that get on your clothes and everythign that make you sick. be safe and I can't wait to watch the journey.
Absolutely asbestos, I just dealt with the same. Be careful and get yourself a good respirator mask. The space is adorable. Can’t wait to see what you do with it.
Find yourself an old boat graveyard, Lots of really high-quality material can be found in salvage from them. The walls that are water, damaged and soft could be replaced with salvage teak from an old boat. Lots of other goodies as well size to fit your mobile. Really love your vintage diggs can’t wait to watch you bring her back to life.😊
Ki, love your vintage mobile home and love your thinking of recycling the "old house" and make it look amazing with your own effort and work and no debts. I recommend to build a carport for your home. The carport will keep the heat out of your roof during the summer and the cold snow and rain too. If you build the carport wide then you can park your car under it and not get wet or snow and still have a nice place to have an outside living area. In your master bed room a queen side bed is fantastic but is going to take so much space, why not a nice trundle day bed. Small enough for you and you have more space making the room look bigger but if you need to share the bed then pull up the trundle and you will have a bigger bed for two.
Hey Ki, I LOVE your pick for your home! Love Vintage. I was wondering if you were going to insulate the walls of the trailer? I hear Rock Wool is expensive, but best. Insulate the floors and ceiling too.
It looks better already! I agree with another comment, the kitchen cabinets are probably built better than what you can buy now! The black and white tile was pretty cool back in the day!!
You go girl I bought a lot 25 years ago paid for it first and then I bought a repo double wide trailer and paid it off in about 10 years and now I able to say everything is mines no rent no mortgage just Clem living and I also remolded the home and I am truly blessed. So to see a young women who had the same thoughts that I had in this day it does my heart good. Keep up the good work and let god keep blessing you
H! I Just found you at midnight I couldn't sleep now I have to follow you Love your energy if anyone can do this with a little help from your friends it would be you!
