BTW, this is a Kickstarter game. Kickstarter failures are always so prominent in the public eye while the many successes are overlooked, so it’s important to deliberately point this out.

Why is it important to deliberately point that out? I don’t get why that matters at all. Unless you are one of the people who made a pledge, and then waited for years hoping your investment wasn’t for nothing, it does not matter how the development process was funded. I know it seems like a long and grueling journey to you and other backers, (especially those that pledged like hundreds or thousands of dollars) but it really doesn’t make the end result any more impressive. The fact that the team developed a fun and enjoyable experience overall is great , means they are talented. But they would deserve the exact same praise if they had funded the whole thing on their own, or with a bank loan. Sounds to me a like another instance of those who are frequent backers on Kickstarter getting this inflated sense of accomplishment since “yep, been there ever since the verrry beginning 😎". To your point that most games flop hard on Kickstarter... thats just like when people seem to give praise just for games launching on a complete, functioning game, as advertised. Which should always be expected.

I believe there is a difference between pulling off a great game/product on kickstater than funding the whole thing yourself like other companies or indie studios... The difference is that on Kickstater they are being trusted with other people's money and faith, and they have the responsability to deliver Many on kickstarter deceive the packers for the cash, others legit want to be honest but either misused the money or underestimated the project So the devs proved they can pull off a success with a limited amount of money, and gained faith from backers and audiences that they can be trusted with money. Also, its 100% understandable for backers who were there from the beginning to feel proud because backing is a gamble, and most often than not, kickstarters tend to fail, plus, there'd be no game if these people put their faith in them, i personally recently heard of the game, but i would've loved backing this and have my name in this great game

I backed this game’s Kickstarter project four years ago and gosh dang it, I am SO glad I did!! This is most likely going to be added to my list of all-time favorite indie games :D

Bought it on PS5 yesterday (after seeing this review). I enjoy it (5 hours in). Especially the music. The story is also very intriguing to me (memories). And I like the artstyle quite a bit too. But not so much, that I would want a lot more games in that manner. I do have some eye fatigue / visibility issues with it. The same goes for the gameplay. It's certainly a beautiful, well-made, and unique indie game - but for me, it doesn't quite have the same "awe factor" and replayability-value, compared to many of my all-time favorites. And it's also a very forgiving game. You have to react quickly - but you don't feel particularly accomplished or rewarded here (in comparison to Salt & Sanctuary for example). But I do enjoy the game - the memory fragments are however the parts I look most forward to. ^^

100% agree. I do sometimes wish the narrative-style reviews of yore, which came alongside the hard-copy scripts. Those reviews were truly magical. Though I appreciate they must also have taken an age to write, and time is finite, so I understand why they're no longer done. Still, and regardless of that: the best reviewer on RU-vid.

"Please Don't Skip This" - is probably my favorite video series on all of youtube. It's basically a reading list / curriculum for a real-time and evolving course on the development of video games as an artistic/ludic medium. And even beyond that, new videos in the series always give me that same feeling of giddy excitement for what new awesome video game I'll be spending my money on next, that I had decades ago as a kid, standing at the magazine rack of my local electronics store, reading hurriedly about what new marvels awaited me in next week's video game aisle.

I just played half of the game and I have contradictory thoughts. The visuals are AMAZING. Unfortunately the game falls short on every other area, for me anyway. The dialogues felt long and often unnecessary. Controls aren't very precise. Combat is often a grind - easy, unchallenging and repetitive. Music was great on RU-vid but during the game it's an endless loop that destroys any sense of cinematic feel. The world is a disconnected array of beautiful rooms that have nothing to do with each other and doesn't create a universe. The game isn't bad, far from it. But visuals are doing the heavy lifting.

Oneiric comes from the Greek word ονειρικό = o-ni-reko which means dreamy/dreamlike. I was surprised when I saw this word being used in the game. Just goes to show how much love they’ve put in to it.

There is a lot to like about Narita Boy but for me personally here is so much frustrating parts in its gameplay, i absolutely do not enjoy combat, it for some reason doesn't feel right, also setting up character movement on analog stick and not D-pad in 2d platformer got me a way longer time to adjust than id like to

Played this during the indie game festival on steam and was thoroughly impressed (together with boomerang x, loop hero, genesis noir). i loved how unique, detailed and coherent the digital world was while at the same time being lighthearted and beautiful both in its visual and sound design. I'm glad that it caught your attention and I can't wait to play it myself!

I saw the trailer on the PlayStation RU-vid channel maybe a month ago now, and it interested me right away. Enough for me to put it on my list of games to watch out for. Your review solidified it tho...I have to play this game for myself.

I am really getting into these indie games man. The lighting and colors are gorgeous, the music pumps you up, the lore and writing is surprisingly interesting. Gameplay is a bit stiff, but the variety with your combat helps a lot. Currently cannot put this game down.

Sold. Also i think these kind of games reviews are good examples of what makes you the best reviewer out there. You speak eloquently from the heart and at the end of the review we have a good idea about how you 'felt' about it. You allow one to empathise with you. Also see Gris and Nier Automata. Thanks you. I didn't backed the kickstarter back then, however, I've been keeping an eye on this one for some time. I've been jamming the OST since yesterday. I'll be getting 20 copies for me and my friends when it get's released today. This is a gem of a game. The devs did an excellent job, and can't wait for their future projects. Exciting day!

It's the feeling of playing Another World the first time all over again and being blown away! I wish the music was more cyberpunk synthwave though than old nintendo game style.
