I'd be interested to see the difference if the cameras were hidden and people didn't know it was for a video. I bet a lot more people would be judgmental of them for not paying for stuff themselves and would refuse hospitality for that reason.

Lovely concept. I did this by myself in 2013 and called it Traveling on Kindness. I just kept up a blog about my experiences to make sure it wasn’t influenced by the “camera effect” and one of my rules was to never ask for money, only accept money offered to me. I ended up in over 30 states over 10 weeks and even went to Hawaii from all the money people kept giving me. It was wild!

Coming from Europe where hitchhiking is super common - I tried to hitchhike from LA to Tijuana - what an experience. People where either super open to the idea or super scared to take in stranger - I ve had 1 guy creep the heck outta me - talking about satan and how he has taken ahold of him and how he makes him do strange stuff. Got out that car by the next traffic light. On another ride I was picked up by a woman that offered me to stay at her house have dinner with her family and then she will drive me to the Mexican border the next day …great times - 🎉

Right!? On New Years Day it was so warm out for where I live, and so after a night of hanging with a friend, I went outside to enjoy the warmth of 45 F and foggy, and asked a random person if they wanted to get some breakfast with me, my treat. He said sure. On the walk there, we passed a young guy and I had said, "hey...." and right away he says, "NO!" without even letting me finish my sentence. I was just asking if a restaurant was open down the street. When he heard the question his tone changed and he answered. I think he freaked out b/c there were a lot of panhandling going on as well as a park where homeless people stay, so I do kinda get it b/c I get people asking me all the time for money that I don't have to give. I imagine it also had to do with the person I was taking to breakfast was an older black fella.

Ok I’m 6 and a half minutes in and I can’t get control of my emotions. The level of kindness already is softening my heart. I think telling them about your mission to travel across America only by using the kindness of strangers is key, if you are hitchhiker, or homeless (as I was), you could potentially phrase it that way (while remaining honest) that you are also relying on the kindness of strangers for transportation or food in your current situation.

I got on a binge of watching videos about 9/11 recently (RU-vid recommendation rabbit hole type of stuff) and it got me thinking about the American spirit I grew up believing in - that people in this country could come together to help each other in times of need and regardless of what our backgrounds were. When I got older, I had lost faith in our country that we weren't as connected as I had thought because the media brought out only stories of hate, discrimination, political conflict, etc. Although crimes and the bad stuff are going to happen, of course, it's just good to see more content that proves that Americans are still what I had grown up thinking we were - United.

I have been wanting to do stuff like this since I was a kid to be honest. Traveling like that is the best way to go. I love your guys' videos and I can't wait to see the rest of the series. :)

I did the same thing here in Australia about 30 years ago. I decided to hitch from my home in Cairns to Brisbane with no money just relying on kindness of strangers. I had the best trip with people offering a lift and paying for meals and inviting me into there homes , really renews your faith in humanity.

As a traveler, this kindness is what ive seen time and time again, different countries. Poor, rich, all colors. Glad travel channels show this reality. Especially couch surfing during the early 2000s

@@thebananaman419 Women are at much much higher risk of having bad things happen to them, how many creepy women want to abduct and rape or kill a man...Men don't really have to worry about that although with that being said the chances of anything bad happening is not that high and many women do solo travel but much better if she had a friend or partner to travel with of course.

Sorry but I cannot respect this. Taking $20 from people who need it more than you guys.. you should be just giving the $ back once they offer it, pay out of pocket but consider it donated.. this should not have costed these strangers
