Definitely true. UA's inability to keep up with Mac Silicon, or even just macOS updates is why I've abandoned my Apollo Twin MkII. At the end of the day, UA is all about selling plugins. But the hype doesn't actually live up to the reality, as they are falling further and further behind in their software.
@FernandoDCDuarte
@FernandoDCDuarte 2 года назад
On the plus side, the latest UA software, drivers and Luna software are now M1 native with Monterrey support, if I'm not mistsken
@eyesonly4451
@eyesonly4451 2 года назад
@@FernandoDCDuarte Yes and no on macOS 11.x compatibility (including Monterey and Apple Silicon). The current UA software requires a custom kernel extension (kexts) in order to function. New versions of macOS see custom kexts as a security vulnerability. That's why UA has the user disable this at installation, thus breaking some of macOS's security. Developers that need kernel functionality should now be using MDM instead of the older kexts. So yes, it will work on the M1, but at the cost of less system security.

@donmilland7606 Год назад
First rule of thumb, it is not necessary to upgrade the OSX except for the occasional security patch - unless you want to create headaches for yourself. I not address the nightmares behind Mac silicons. Yes there is overhype but I disagree with falling further behind.

Great honesty 😁 I surprised more musicians/producer don’t say the same thing. I have a UA Apollo Twin X in my home studio and considering another interface for mobile & iPad. The UA Volt series looked like a cool option, but the tech specs are inferior to the Audient id4. But, even the notion of having 2 interfaces is kinda crazy. I sound be able to use the id4 for everything.

I'd have said if you want cross platform to go with USB, not Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt also requires a driver, which is why it wasn't seen. Many if not all USB interfaces are class compliant, meaning no driver needed, the OS will recognize it without problem. I'm not a UA fanboy or anything, but just offering my take. MOTU is also a very solid choice in general.

I have the Apollo solo I love it I have had no problems I have a HP laptop and haven't had any problems with it and I love the fact I can record thru plugins so I don't have to worry about outboard gear I can go in with compression I can go in with a mic pre like the Avalon or the Neve 1073 all of that stuff is great and the sound is outstanding plus it came with $1300 worth of UAD plugins and now they have Sparks plugins so I can use them with any interface and if you own the hardware you don't have to buy the spark plugins the ones you own comes free and you can purchase a dongle key and put them on another computer with any interface and use them along with your other plugins..so yes I love it..❤❤❤ 👍👍👍

I own an Apollo Solo usb3 for Windows and an iD4 Audient for mac/win and i combine them ,also the plugins. I do not know if UAD have thought like me, to own 2 audio interfaces just for one thing, but if you're stuck in the os,you need 2 for expandability. Normal and logical would have been to use a single interface,but it seems that normality means something else when it comes to making money. I respect both companies and I'm content with how much it offers me. I'm also waiting at least for LUNA on windows. That's will be fair! Greetings Joshua!

Dude, I did essentially same thing. Sold my Apollo Twin Duo X for an iD14. I also run Windows, and the Apollo was a crackling, distorted disaster. It's an extremely common and well known issue on the UAD forums. There are dozens of threads on precisely the windows comparability issue. UAD has been saying they are aware of the issue, and are working on a solution... But they have been saying that for 5+ years, and they claim that giving updates on solving the issue is a 'privacy issue'. I think they mean IP issue, potentially - but even then, sounds like a cop out to me. How is patching a technology and updating a community about progress on said patch an IP or privacy issue? It's commonplace in any industry to admit problems and give updates about progress. So, to further your grievances with the UAD back and forth / sometimes works sometimes doesn't, I sold my Apollo for the exact same reasons. I love my Audient. It sounds incredible.

I would just like to start working on serious plug ins, and these chambers and studio rooms that UAD is selling, is there alternative to it? Which bubdle would you recomend that I use/learn if im not having an apollo. Long story short, what is great alternative to UAD plug ins? Thank you.

Another one, for the iD14mkII: 2 in's BUT 4out's Doesn't look like much, but you get the chance to run external gear for instance, like a compressor or equalizer, not to mention different speaker and/or headphone amplifiers. Plus, the built in headphone outputs can have their own mix, so actually 6 physical outs/mixes, in a small footprint, bus powered interface.

I have used the id14 (first version) since the day it came out .apart from a little cosmetic fading it has been rock solid in daily uses across multiple OS. @@ctrlaltcreate3827 yea I hear that. At the same time with no computer everything just kinda works. If it dosen't you'll pretty much always be able to find out the little thing you have set wrong through the manual or an email to the manufacturer. Computers I've spent I dunno how many hours on getting nothing done just constant problems, without one mostly just getting used to not using a computer interface to kinda systematically create something kinda melodic from a dead (without the human) robotic device. Gives it to me in separate track recordings/ one main mix track on an SD card.

I had a short honeymoon with UA and I really liked having DSP technology but I had problems with their USB 3.0 devices not playing nice with other usb hardware. Over the past couple of years, it has become the thing to attack UAD and its DSP protocols. The biggest gripe concerns those expensive plugins and the interfaces' price (because each comes with the basic plugins. (It's overlooked that you can run those in your DAW or not at all. I have SSL, Softube, and misc plugins. The UAD plugins are only exclusive to the Console App.). Btw I use the Console to route signals in and out of my computer. I've notice the price of UAD plugins are gradually coming down. It works for me! I have an Apollo Quad with 4 units of external hardware. I just bought an used Solo from GC for $249 for another Mac.

Can’t say for sure but my guess on why the laptop couldn’t power the UA without being plugged in is likely in how the power management settings are on the laptop. They generally limit draw when they’re unplugged but you should be able to get them to run full power to everything and just drain the battery faster. Could also be in the device manager for individual port management if the TB has a power limited option.

And just like you said it had a few teething problems. i finally got it working after spending £80 extra on cables etc. UA. should include the cable especially for the pc version as not all cables work, even if they meet the spec required. On the plus side, I can say that there support was very quick and helpful. and they sent me links to find the specific requirements for the cables. i probably wouldn't of struggled so much if they added these links to the setup page of there website. anyways getting back to your post. i hesitated in between buying a audient interface as i bought a audient Nero last year, and i found the quality excellent. But i bought the solo so i could get the free heritage bundle to add to my twin plugins. i absolutely respect your point of view and will look out for more honest reviews from you. i understand and agree exactly with what your saying in this video and i think its great content. If your main focus is music I’d take a look at the Rode NT1. Tried and true and I’ve owned a lot of them. No cloud lifter needed for that mic and for the price it sounds great. You can pick them up as a kit with shock mount and pop filter for under $300 usd.

I've not had any experience with the Volts but in all honesty I think the Volt is a cash grab from UA. I can't imagine them using the same preamps and converters for half the price. I'd go with the tried and true ID4 MKii Plus you get the extra headphone out. :)

Ok.. So I watched all video.. and the most important question: Where the sound is fuller, wider, more bassy with kick? On UAD or on Audient? OUTPUT sound quality matters and is the reason of buying audio interface in 80%. I know that uad sound can be clean (a bit compressed), but I need good drum kick for my tech productions. M-audio Profire has better kick than my apollo twin usb. So what is your opinion about Audient regarding bass and kick and in general panorama and thickness of sound?
@qwe1231
@qwe1231 7 месяцев назад
Lack of dual headphone jacks "the biggest oversight in our universe" lol. Audient's desigb is poor - you have to push the interface away from you on desk to accommodate even one headphone jack, and usually it ends up sitting at a 45-degree angle. By contrast, not only does the SSL2+ come with two headphone jacks, but it also dedicated volume controls for each... and the jacks are in the back, out of the way.

Hey Joshua, I am looking to upgrade from my Scarlett 2i2 (2nd Gen) and think I have it narrowed down to two different audio interfaces. I've noticed that no matter what I do mixing wise, when I compare my mixes to the big musicians' music on Spotify/Apple Music, the volume level and overall sound quality is night and day. I have a 2020 Macbook Pro, use the most updated version of Logic Pro X, and really only need my audio interface to record my own vocals and guitar (I use a midi keyboard that runs straight into the laptop for all other virtual instruments) in my bedroom studio. My price range is $500 or less. With that being said, should I get the UAD Apollo Solo or the Audient ID4 mkii? If you have other options that may better suit my setup/use, please feel free to let me know! Thank you!
@joshuabutlermusic
@joshuabutlermusic 2 года назад
Your interface isn't going to effect the volume of your mixes on spotify. As far as mixing, you will notice a slight difference if you upgrade to the Apollo or the ID4. The converters and preamps are quite a bit better. It's really hard to pick an interface with that price range. You have so many good options for around $500. I just purchased the antelope audio Zen Q and that thing is amazing. The Zen Go by antelope audio is under $500 and I honestly highly recommend it. It has the same preamps and converters as the bigger priced interfaces from Antelope but much cheaper. I LOVE the sound.

I actually just went ahead and purchased the Audient iD22 instead of the id4 mkii as I am wishing to build a small vocal stack upon it. I also already have a few Waves plugins and I’ve seen people comparing the id22 online to even the Apollo Twin. For the price of $500, I couldn’t resist. Can’t wait to use it! I think u went into the good ol' trap thinking better gear will make ur songs sound better! Sure, u might get 10% better sound, but in reality the reason behind ur problem is 100% about ur mixing and mastering capabilities! And if u are comparing ur bedroom mixes to big musicians' songs that have been produced with millions of dollars, then... u are reaching the stars by trying to climb a ladder. Protip: To make very good results, u don't need any 500$ gear, any decent budget gear is enough. But what u DO need is a great performance on record AND great mixing skills! If u got those two, u have a chance at competing with the best.

Great post, I won't buy into the UAD ecosystem and it looks like many other people are concluding the same thing. The new Volt was exposed as very ordinary within hours of release (110dBU dynamic range puts in the same camp as Behringer/Stenberg/Presonus entry level) a gimmicky cash grab for the lower end market using their badge as a selling point. My studio is based around an iD44 and an ASP 800 very, very happy indeed.

Hi Joshua. Thanks for this video. I bought a Audient iD22. I tracked some stuff but seems like the high frequencies does not come through too nice the way I want it to sound. Especially on the cymbals. Is it something to do with the sound of the Audient? To me it sounds almost like trying to play high frequencies through a woofer. It's not nice a clear even though I tried to EQ it to sound better. I have a Rode NT2A mic that I used without an additional pre-amp that I recorded vocals with. The vocals has the same kind of effect. The highs does not sound so smooth.Is it normal with this Audient interface?
@joshuabutlermusic
@joshuabutlermusic 2 года назад
I never had an issue with the high frequencies coming thru. A lot of factors play in to it tho. What's your mixing situation? What speakers are you using? Also if your music listening software isn't the same as your daw. It could have eq already on it. A lot of variables. It's impossible to know for sure without knowing your whole set up.

Ok thanks for your feedback. I sue Studio One 5 as my DAW. I have Yamaha S5 monitors. I used a Rode NT2A mic for vocals. But I hear what you say. Suppose I will play around with it a bit and see where I end up. I got me a Shure SM57 mic now and will trial it on there and see how it goes.

To be honest, things sound ok now. Not sure what the real issue was. But my iD22 has been sent for repairs like 3 times already in 2 years time. Just came back from repairs and the pcboard had to be replaced. Just normal use. I bought a used Roland Quadcapture before this interface and am still using it without any issues whatsoever. So it's hard to say what you need to do. I am using UAD plugins for the last year and if I had the money then would definately go for an Appollo interface as you get free plugins not to mention lots of UAD plugins are regularly on sale lately and can be used natively. But I am not mobile so my needs and your needs might differ. I did a song using UAD plugins and one using Waves and the clarity I get with UAD is why I love using them. They are proven to be closest to the hardware. But I also like some Slate plugins as well. If you want to go the Audient route I'd say go for the iD44 as it has better preamps. The Apollo also has great preamps but perhaps a bit more expensive. My advice would be to do as much research possible on what you interested in and then decide. Good luck!
@wesleyhendricks153
@wesleyhendricks153 9 месяцев назад
Oh just to add...the iD22 is said to be the most problematic model. So if I were you I would avoid going for the iD22. Rather go for the iD14, iD24 or the iD44. iD44 would obviously have the best preamps.
