On Long Island the hierarchy in " volunteer " fire departments are riding around 24/7/365 in late model SUV's . They are seen outside malls , restaurants , bars and out of the area . Many are used as commuter vehicles , hundreds of miles a week . FREE gas , insurance and deprecation ! There are also " fire districts " with the same perks . Only as employees , their base pay is over $100 K , plus benefits ! The public has NO idea what is going on !

No idea how miserable those jobs are. No idea. Amd getting healthy people to do them is like impossoble. They have way better options if they know the balance of healthy, reasonable, and yet proper per protocol. You literaly jave to provide a dynamic where its not so bad eventhough i have better options, its fits what works for me for now, and hopefully for now is more stable and reliable people concept. This is a very reasonable decision in some spaces.

Why is everything so out of control

I drove GOV vehicles for 18 years in the Navy. You had to drive your POV to the work location and then pick up the GOV for your daily work. When it was time to go home you had to return the GOV vehicle to the work location and pick up your POV to go home. Here in the Houston area is a joke with police vehicles. You see Police vehicles parked at their homes every day for officers who work sometimes 2 jurisdictions away from their home. The rest of the population has to pay for gas and told roads to go to work everyday. We as tax payers have to pay for their gas, more frequent maintenance and faster depreciation on this vehicles. There’s zero accountability for misused of state property. We had to justify domicile of duty for a vehicle for each day we needed to take the vehicle home. If you had a place to be that would required to pass that place for more than 30 miles to pickup the GOV vehicle and then drive back to the location you already were. Other than that, get your POV like everyone else.
