Great video! Thank you for doing this review! It was interesting to see how air dry clays perform on the wheel. I have worked with air dry clays for quite some time but for handbuilding only. I found StoneX being easy to work with but very brittle after drying. Activa works well for handbuilding and DAS suitable for small projects only. My favorite air dry clay is Laguna Mexo self-hardening clay. It works very well for large projects, easy to work with, and strong after drying. Would be interesting to see how it performs on the wheel. Maybe you can include it in your next review.

Hello, have you tried cold clay on the wheel? The one that can be baked in the oven? I found online for example the porcelain I would like to try on my new mini wheel, I am trying to figure it out what is best option since I do have a kiln near that charge 4 pounds for 1kg of fired pieces , but I don't know how could I deal with miniatures pieces 😅 so it would be great finding a way that I can do it at home and still end up with a long lasting piece, that doesn't break easily.
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 2 года назад
Good question Cris. I wouldn't recommend cold clay for the wheel here is a post that will help explain the differences potterycrafters.com/can-air-dry-clay-be-used-on-a-pottery-wheel/ Unfortunately you can't get the strength without a kiln. But you can make some cool things, paint them and apply a sealant. Enjoy your new wheel and the art of crafting clay 😍

Good to know about these brands for air clay. Because these clays are not really waterproof, does that mean they can not be applied into the Bisguet fire and later the glaze kiln process?
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 10 месяцев назад
That is a very good and important question. You are right air dry clay can not be used in the kiln or glaze fired. All you can do with this clay is paint it and use a sealer. Air dry clay is used if you don't have access to a kiln and for decorative purposes only. 😊

I love your videos! I think there is something wrong with my air dry clay. It is very damp and it is just about impossible to knead. The clay sticks to everything and I find it impossible to wedge as it just sticks to my hands. It is like pastry that needs a little more flour! When you take your clay out of its packet you seem to get very little on your hands, my hands are covered and it is so difficult to centre too. Any advice would be gratefully received
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 2 года назад
Thank you Lynda 😊 I don't know what brand you are using. It really shouldn't be like that. The three brands that I have used were not like that at all. I would suggest letting it dry out a bit and keeping a close eye on it so it doesn't dry out too much. Then try wedging it. otherwise I would suggest getting the Amaco Stonex. It really works well on the wheel. Here is the link for Stonex if you want to check it out. geni.us/0mLDVtf

What is air dry clay compared to clay? Confusing.... 🤔

Very good question Kim. 😊 Air dry clay does not go in the kiln. It is not waterproof or food safe. It is mainly for people that don't have a kiln but would still like to mold things with clay, like decorative pieces. You can then paint them and seal them with a sealant to make them waterproof.

That is great. I still have the pot I made with stonex clay. I think it is durable for air dry clay. Just make sure you clean your wheel real well if you use kiln fired pottery clay.
