This may have been suggested already, but way back in the 80s my friend and I were deep in a national forest riding when my friend discovered that his oil plug had come out and was lost. There was a Forest Service lookout a few miles up the road, so we rode on my bike to see what we could find there. The lookout was manned and the person there had one quart of oil in his truck which he gave us. We went back to my friend's bike. Now we had some oil but no plug. So I found a dead hardwood branch and hacked off about a 2"-3" piece. It took me about 20 minutes to whittle it down with a small taper at one end. We used a pair of plyers in our tool kit to grab the wide end and turn it into the crankcase until we could not turn it anymore. My friend rode his bike (carefully, low RPM) all the way home. We stopped several times to check the plug. After the engine got hot again, we were able to tighten the wood plug a bit more. Other than that, it did not leak a drop of oil.

Had a cheap fuel line completely split while I was on the motorway, miles from am exit. Found a McDonald's straw on the side of the road. Put it inside the fuel line to bridge the 2 sections, jammed up the gaps with napkin, wrapped the remaining napkin around the whole mess and then fastened the whole thing together with some tape I had in my bag. Got me to class and then all the way back home at the end of the day (on back roads). The napkin provided a protective barrier for the tape adhesive from the fuel. Flawless

Back when I was a college student (in South Africa) my dad and rebuilt a Kawasaki Z500 that was bought diassembled in crates. A wire was pinched in the process and for the longest time I had the fuse blown infrequently. One day on a 200 mile trip from college back home, the fuse blew again and I was literally in the middle of nowhere. I walked up the road and found a discarded empty sigarette pack and used the foil inside to use as a fuse. It worked and brought me all the way home! I did find the offending wire eventually and taped it up nicely and never had the problem with the fuse after that.

In July I was riding back to NJ from NC on my 1976 Honda GL1000 when my throttle cable broke. I disconnected the broken end (at the handlebar end) and used my leatherman to grip the end of the cable. I was able to ride a few miles to the next town where I found and Autozone. They didn’t have a universal replacement cable. A local guy stopped by and went to his house to bring a throttle cable from a lawn mower. Worked like a charm. Got me the next 300 miles home. I enjoy your videos. John

I'm a builder in the UK. During the 1980s I was driving my Escort XR3 when the throttle cable broke. To get home, I ran a nylon bricklaying line from the carb, around the engine bay and through the drivers window. I don't know if it was legal or not to drive like that, but it worked

Back when I was 17 (am 52 now), the throttle cable snapped on a Kawasaki AR125 I had, 10 miles from home, I just ramped up the Idle adjustment to mid revs, and suffered the high reving when I had to stop for brief moments - roundabouts, and when I had to stop at lights i just killed the engine and readied the kick starter. Juggling the gears and using the brakes helped with speed control... BUT... It got me home! 👍 😎🇬🇧

Greetings from Ireland. I was living in Arizona back in the 90's. I had a 1977 Ford F250. The alternator belt broke, luckily there was enough left to go around the crank pully to the water pump leaving out the alternator. I cut the belt to the length I needed and burned a couple of holes to stich through then stitched it together with string. It got me 20 miles to town and back (almost) finally broke a half mile from home which I made before it overheated. I was in my mid 20's at the time.

My brother had his throttle cable fallen off on the highway but he managed to continue to drive with 120km/h (75mph) only by adjusting the idle settings on his Yamaha XJR1200. No need for a stop for just such little things. There also only were 1-2 inches water on the road (it was raining heavily)

Now every time that you go riding you have to make a checklist. Barbed wire, check. Electrical tape, check. Aluminum foil, check. Boot lace, check. Multi tool, check. Never leave home without it.

Mechanical wire, aka baling wire will work as a temporary,or even long term chain link as proven by 1000s upon 1000s of farmers all across America over the past 70 years or longer... Its also been used to hold tie rod ends together on the Rubicon trail,as exhaust hangers,as replacement hose clamps(but only when twisted just right,and doubled),as ground wires,as a multitude of saving someonesass tool,or expendable..

In the 80's I broke a clutch cable on my Goldwing during a cross country road trip. It was a Sunday in north Texas so everything was closed. I cut the clutch cable down, disconnected my rear mechanical brake, ran my clutch cable over the front helmet hook and tied the cable to the brake lever so I could use the foot brake as a clutch. Worked great. I was planning to fix it the next day at the next bike shop I found but was making miles so I just rode it all the way to Indiana that way. It was interesting having to relearn to ride my bike after I did fix it though. I had a throttle cable break another time while riding to work. I ended up pulling the broke end out of my throttle and just used a small pair of vice grips to get a hold on the broke end so I could pull it and managed to ride the last few miles to work with it. I had buddy take me to a bike shop at lunch and I got a new cable.

If you have a Victory motorcycle and your clutch cable breaks, you can use a pair of Vise Grips as a "Suicide Clutch" lever to get you home. I drove 250 miles that way until I could get home and replace the cable.

And thats why you always should have some wire, because you can do every fix you just did with it...and even more: for example if you have an old leaking rubber fuel line that slips off the carburator all the time, you can put some wire around it and twist it real tight to clamp it down. Also handy if you locked your self outside your house and need to get in, if you have a tilted window you can use wire to make 2 loops at the end of the wire, spaced apart slightly, you put it through the open gap of the window and get it over the handle on the inside, then you have to close the window and pull the handle to the side to open the window. I dont know how a typical window in america looks like so i dont know if it is practical in the US but here in germany i used this method a couple of times when i was a kid and i locked myself outside our house😅 DISCLAIMER: ONLY USE THIS AT HOME

My favorite hack was using spent brass from a 22 shell in place of the old school glass fuses. Or on a truck sing a pair of pantyhose to replace a v belt out in the woods at 1130 needing to get my high school sweetheart home before midnight. They were off anyway...may as well use them

One day many years ago, I was riding along on my 350Jawa, and the throttle cable twist-grip nipple broke off. I thought about it for a few minutes, and decided the best way to get home, was to loosen one of the handlebar bolts, and clamp it down onto the end of the broken throttle cable. To accelerate, all I had to do was to pull on the outer cable, and that worked a treat.

My friends call me crazy for having a piece of rope/lace in my toolkit. Now i have proof that it can be very usefull! Thanks!

An easy trick for a burnt fuse and if you do not have a spare is to use an old, wire and strip individual strands of copper wire, and tie them to both terminal of the fuse use anywhere between 4-8 strands

This is great! Reminds me of the time my '88 BMW throttle cable broke 30 miles from home. I literally did the same thing, used my shoestring. I ran it from the throttle body, and through my drivers window. It was a bit of a learning curve since it was a 5 speed. LOL I made it home no problem. Good times! Great content, Craig.

I had a fuse blow on my XV1100 and was in the middle of nowhere I broke the plastic off of it and bent the blown piece together so it was touching again and worked like a charm

Absolutely loved this view video. To be honest. This was one of my all time favorites. Real life and manufacture specs don’t really coincide with each other when you’re out in the field or wilds far from any parts or conventional tools. I currently live in Deep Bush Alaska where most of the time your far from anything. All here comes in on float planes. And you are always the mechanic. Parts can be months out or at best days. You have to make things work most of the time here or do without, till parts arrive and hope in the mean time you didn’t make things worse in the process. What for this video was a novel situation and is more or less daily life here. Thanks for sharing your experience. Great fun. Till the next time have a wonderful day.

Man I have no idea how I have not come across your channel until now. I have never ridden or worked on a bike in my life, but I am a mechanic and I freaking love this. With the chemistry between you and the camera man along with the general delivery of the commentary; you could have been weaving baskets and I would have been glued to the screen. I actually had my chain break on my ZX14 last year. It sheared one of the chain pins and I didnt have a spare masterlink handy. I got a mate to pick it up on a trailer and took it to his home. I was able to remove the broken pin and replace it with a M5(?) bolt and nylock nut. On that, I was able to ride 30kms home. And thats a LOT of power to put through a small mild steel bolt. Now I carry a pack of bolts with me and need to get myself a masterlink for the tool kit.

Almost forgot ... keep a small Visegrip plier in your tool bag. Great for emergency broken clutch and throttle cable levers

I'm exceedingly worried about how dangerous this one small stretch of Pennsylvania road is. Perhaps it would be wise to contact someone about addressing some of these dangers, but i'm unsure what exactly could be done since many seem like acts of god.

Gem clips work well for blade type blown fuse replacements,and they're good for like 50 amps or thereabouts(way more than your oem harness wiring can withstand,or supply), but don't touch em while the key is on..

Had to do the boot lace thing once with my old VW bug, when the throttle cable broke on a Friday afternoon in rush hour traffic. Worked like a champ!

He had an old Ford Ranger,one of the original ones. We ended up getting stuck in a mud hole and when we got pulled out,the muffler ended up getting ripped half way off. I had to use my shoe laces to tie it up so we didn’t get pulled over when we were going home the next morning. Fun times! 🤣

Your fuse reminded me of a chart we had in our shop that gaged 5 amp fuses in chewing wrappers all the way up to 50 amp railroad spikes. It was a funny chart

Tip#2 Make sure that a bull isn't on the other side of fence you borrow the barbed wire from because the only grounding would be by him grounding you into the dirt! Our bull was so wild when we rescued him that he would rip down the fence if it shocked him so we literally had to turn off the power to it to keep him inside it which blew our minds. I'm the only person that can be somewhat safely around him and I caught him using the fencing/post to scratch his sides so whenever it zapped him his inner Jackie Chan emerged! I kid you not this bull purposely tore down over 200 feet of fencing and post and still stayed in the pasture so he was telling us something we just had figure it out! Loved the vid man!

I used the foil trick once, but it was in an old Jeep that had the glass fuses,, so I just wrapped it around the blown fuse and put it back in to get to the parts store. So far I've been lucky with the bikes and the worst we've had on the road was a broken mirror (Who needs those, right? I swear they're designed to be useless on a bike anyway.) Wonder how well bailing wire would hold up on the chain fix? Great video! 👍

I wonder if barbed wire or some other kind of metal mechanics wire twisted together with pliers would fare better as a master link than zip ties or a shoelace.

You and the other bearded one have the best sense of humor. Great presenters and instructors. The foil fuse trick works on boat outboard trim fuses when you can’t bring it up or down, too…faster than calling for help.

i like the way you stacked all the repairs. hilarious. the entire toolkit to remove the seat and tank had me in stitches from laughing 🤣

For me the same accelerator problem happened. It was raining heavily and got a foot or two of water on the roads. the accelerator was working fine, but after some time, it was acting weird and when ever I give throttle, the bike was shutting off. I thought some water was in carburettor and was making this happen (it was true I cleansed the carburettor and it is working fine). In my bike I had choke, which is used to rev up the bike to get it started in the morning. I put the choke on and the bike started to rev up to full throttle(idk how). I used ignition switch to cut the engine off and was riding home of 10 kms like that. without that presence of mind at that time where I was drenched by rain, i could have not got home before it was too late on the clock. Also when I cut the ignition at higher revs, I could just turn it on at the right time, when the engine was driven by the wheels, So just like that I turned the ignition switch off, and at the right movement turned it on, the bike started and kept the revs.

Thinking about it, the boot lace master link solution actually sounds feasible as an emergency fix to at least get you home. The elasticity of the boot lace gives it enough give to be able to stretch and then retract how it needs to as it goes over the sprockets. The barbed wire had me thinking that you were going to ground out in multiple places on the bike, not gonna lie and the foil from the candy wrapper was a good one because my dad actually had to use that trick in his '74 Ford F100 when he was younger. Really cool solutions!

I had to use a piece of copper wire on my chain. My dad‘s 360 Honda. I was doing burnouts and broke the chain and had to borrow a piece of wire from a guy that lived up on the Sandune. It got me home. Great stuff Craig.

As for broken chain, coula nails, insert, bed over the ends as much as poss, and go easy on the throttle... It'll do! Also, tyre puncture , I inserted a thick screw, gaffa taped the tyre and wheel to keep the thick screw in (like the zip tie trick) pumped up tyre and did a gentle ride back with that rear tyre.. Got me home! 👍 😎🇬🇧

BTW, if you have a wire that's too thin for the amount of current, you can double, or triple it up or more. Assuming you have enough wire and enough space to hook them up. (also a short section of too thin wire is better than a long section, think of it like a fuse.)

Love this video! Never did any roadside repairs on my bike but I used a plastic pin (from pegboard) to hold a windshield wiper together. It held for about 30 minutes in steady rain. I also cut a canvas bag into strips to tie the plastic underbody protector (on my car) together after it split and was making irritating dragging noises when driving.

This is the best video so far! Hilarious all the way through. OH boy we got a lot going on here! lmao Ive used weed whip line on the clutch of my yz 125. Out on the trail my cable frayed and snapped. I was able to take off a nut and bolt and pinch the 2 together. pulled the end through the clutch lever and tied a knot. got me 7-10 miles home offroad

Redneck repair for 4x4, I always keep an empty tomato paste can and gear clamp for most trucks. If you damaged your rear drive shaft, with a little effort cause its tight replace the yolk with said can clamp it in. Now you have fwd and can drive. I may have drove like that for a few weeks till I could get a replacement.

Had the throttle cable issue happen once on a group ride to a friend. I swapped the pull cable with his push cable, worked like a charm. By the way, the small packs of gum still use aluminum wrappers, and unlike a key, it'll burn up before the wiring does. My favorite though is a friend who taught me to modify a spark plug by drilling the center out along with an old air hose to use the engine compression to inflate tires after plugging the flat. That ziptie trick is a great traction aid on dirt roads after rain.

How to drastically drop the value of a triumph in 20 mins. 😂😂 This was great. I highly recommend the oldschool option of an air hose with 2 ends, one for Schrader valves and the other for the spark plug.

My worst ever "get me home" bodge was swapping the A and B throttle cables over after the A cable snapped, effectively it reversed the throttle, close to open, open to close. While it worked it was a terrible idea as all my muscle memory was wrong and I nearly wheelied into a slowing down car as I instinctively closed the throttle (ie opened it wide!) It's something I'd do again if stuck in the absolute middle of nowhere with no phone signal or chance of help but other than that just a really bad idea!

I've done the fuse fix with cars and trucks many times when I was young. I was a smoker in those days and used the foil lined inner wrapper on a pack of cigarettes. The easiest way to do it is wrap the legs of the blown fuse and push the fuse back in, I've also used a short piece of light gauge wire stripped the ends back and fold each end over the fuse legs and push it back in.

One of my mates old man pulled the end of a cable and made a new lead end with a piece of stick, pocket knife, spoon and a couple fishing sinkers. Used the leather punch to bore out 2 holes in the stick, melted the lead on the spoon and then poured it into the wooden mold. Craziest in the bush repair I've heard of.

Was riding my Honda 1974 550Four when the throttle cable snapped right at the very end. Solution: 1. Unthread throttle cable brass elbow and remove 2. Thread the remainder of the cable up through the throttle housing 3. Use the pliers in the Honda tool kit and wrap the cable around the loosened nut/bolt that holds the pliers together and tighten 4. Hold the pliers against the throttle grip and twist just like a normal grip. Got me home and was only a little uncomfortable holding the pliers against the grip - but easily doable.

I took a soda can opening tab and ground the top edge down on the concrete sidewalk in the shape of a spade fuse and smashed the ends flat and used it for a fuse a few years back on a lawn mower and I bet that it would work on my Road King!

When I came to this country in 1973 I toured the western US. Somewhere south of Reno my clutch cable broke. Long story short I cut off a piece of fenceing, ran it down the shething, rapped it around the clutch arm and lever and made it to Vegas.

As a teenager grand paw told me to always carry 3 things in the glove box. Chewing gum to patch holes and make a fuse. Women's stockings for improvised filters and belts. A bra to tie up exhaust or a broken carb spring. Most importantly your girl friend won't ask if you have been drinking or bother asking about the panties in the back seat!
